Messages on iMac

Hi there,
I've joined the family a week ago..
I'm very excited....!
using "Messages" I've encountered 2 problem:
when I enter a contact name in the "To" field it recognized all my contacts, but on my messages on the left panel there are only numbers and not names.
my contacts are shared via iCloud, and for some reason it changes automatically their name and add a last name, it some how figures it out from mail or something else. this problem isn't directly connected to "Messages" but it's annoying.

Yes. As I said, I receive all messages both before and after the picture message, but not the picture message or any text sent with the picture. Again, this is only on the iMac. The iPhone gets everything.

I have just downloaded OSX Mavericks and am having a lot of problems with my iCloud account. I get a message "this iMac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with (and then it quoted my e-mail address) Does anybody know what the problem could be??

As mentioned above I have just downloaded OSX Maverick to my iMac. I am now having a lot of problems with iCloud. I get the message that "This iMac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with, and then it goes on to quote my e-mail address. It then says to open iCloud preferences to fix this problem.
I do this and no matter what I seem to do this message continues to return.
Can anybody explain how to resolve this problem (please bear in mind that I am noy very computer literate).

Messages on iMac doesn't show attached images. OK on iPhone.

When someone sends me an iMessage with a picture attached, I get nothing on my iMac. No picture and no text. Any messages before or after the missing message are okay. Quitting and relaunching doesn't help. Rebooting the computer doesn't help.
I can sit my iPhone next tot he iMac and watch the messages come in at the same time. When someone sends a picture, the iMac just sits there with no activity while the iPhone receives everything.
Anyone else having this issue? Is it possible this is a feature and not a bug?

Messages on iMac dont seem to be communicating with iMessanger on other devices

I just upgraded from SL to Mountain Lion and am trying to figure out how messenger works. I set it up with my apple ID and have it set to both my phone number and my email address, but the message on my imac are not showing up on my iphone. Followed the help instructions to make sure it was set up correctly but the two don't seem to be in sync?

Problem solved. Somehow when I updated my iphone to iOS6, my iMessenger got turned off. I havent touched those settings at all. Anyways, switched back on and working fine now.

Messages from iMac Not Received by Recipient?

I just installed Mavericks and tried out the Messages app. It took a few minutes, but when I send a messages from the iMac it shows up on my iPhone and iPad as I would expect it to. But it is not being received by the recipient. I've looked at both system and message preferences and don't see anything that would fix the problem.
When my wife sends me a message it shows up on my iPhone, iPad, and iMac. But I've sent messages to her and a friend, and neither have received them.
Any ideas? Thank you very much.

Never mind. I guess Mavericks just needed some time to warm up. Working now.

Emoticons with messages on iMac

I just started having a problem on my imac with 10.8 Mountain Lion.
When using Messages i was getting emoticons in message i received or ones i sent.
Now I am not getting them, only get the character resprecenion of them.
If I type a message and then sellect an emoticon in the text the emoticon show in the input field but when I sent the message in the message pane it show as a character ie: :-)
When someone sends me a message in the message pane it shows as a charater also. I can not find anywhere that I could have turned it off.
Anyone with any ideas.

Problem solved. Somehow when I updated my iphone to iOS6, my iMessenger got turned off. I havent touched those settings at all. Anyways, switched back on and working fine now.

Turn off messages from imac

I just downloaded the OS Mavericks onto my iMac. Now all of my imessages on my iphone are also showing up on my iMac. i do not want this. My son may accidently see adult conversations. How do I turn this off on my imac?

As Frank Says you can disable the iPhone Number in the iMessages settings on the Mac.
You can remove the Apple ID from the iPhone.
If you want a deeper reset than that so that the iPhone Number does not even show on the Mac's iMessages settings you can do this:-
Access ~/Library/Preferences.
Find the com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist file.
Drag it to the Trash then restart Messages.
You will have to re-add the Apple ID.
At this point if you have not removed the Apple ID on the iPhone (or other device) then you will have to Refuse/Dismiss the pop ups that tell you what the iPhone is using.
You will receive periodic prompts on this from now on unless you remove the Apple ID from the iPhone.
If you want totally private messages on the iPhone you will need to use it with Number only.

Time Machine Backup error message with iMac.sparsebundle (error 109).

I get an error that the backup disk image "/volumes, <my name> Time Caps/<my name> iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error 109). How do I correct this? Thanks.

"no camera found" message on iMac

With Canon SX500 IS attached to my iMac, I then power up th ecamera and open Canon's "Camera WIndow" software, and immediately receive a prompt saying "no camera found." Any help appreciated.

It would help us to know which iMac model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.
This will help in providing you with the proper and/or correct solutions.

Power off message in iMac

It has happened twice that a black screen shows saying to power off the iMac by pressing and holding the power button. I happens right after I log in.
What could this be? Anyone has had this problem? Other than that, the iMac is working properly, is fairly new.

Something on your kit is causing a kernel panic. It could be caused by software that you installed or even a peripheral that you have attached.

Actually you can if you have tethering on your phone. I tether via bluetooth with my macbook air all the time. It will only pair if you have tethering turned on and if your carrier supports it. Otherwise it will not pair.

Can I import old iMessages into the Messages App on an iMac?

Howdy all:
I've been using iMessages on my iPhone for a long while now, but only recently set it up on my iMac.
I'm wondering if there is any way to get all my old iMessage threads to show up in the Messages App on the iMac.
Right now, I am only seeing the threads that I've intereacted with since setting up Messages on iMac, and they only go back as far as when I set it up.

Hi,
The "sync" between and iPhone (or other iOS device) and a Mac only works from the time both devices have the same details.
Effectively this is the time that the iPhone has the Apple ID added to it's settings and the pop ups that appear on the Mac about the iPhone's details are accepted.
The Sync is then "Display on all devices" only.
There is no catch up on existing threads on either device on the other.
If you delete an iMessages or a conversation on one device the other is unaffected.

Using IMAC mail am unable to send messages. I can log directly into internet provider webmail and send no problem.

Am able to send and receiev emails user Internet provider webmail, but am unable to send messages using IMAC Mail.

have you verfies that all the mail settings are just like the mail providers guide ?

Facebook and messages

Anyone having facebook friends no longer showing up as names but now numbers in Messages on iMac? It is happening on all 3 of my macs. When I sign onto messages, and my facebook account is included in that, the FB online friends list shows up for 30 seconds and then changes everyname into a long multi digit. I have no idea why, it started this past week. Any help?

It appears to be a Facebook issue.
A person who uses Facebook can enable the "Chat" options that then allows the Facebook Jabber Server to allow their email to be used as their Jabber ID.
You can set up Messages with any Jabber account and add Facebook Buddies to it.
several other threads address this issue.
You should only see the Jabber ID.
If you add the Jabber ID to someone's Address Card in Contacts app or Address Book in other OS version then their "Real Name" should show in the Buddy List.
However it seems the Facebook servers are showing some sort of number as the ID and this is not recognised by the Messages app (or it's link to the Address Card) and you lose any form of useful identification.
It would appear that this number is something to do with the Buddy's Facebook account and may be a breach of Privacy as this number id not part of the public data normally on view.
