Messages "receive at" settings - what do they really mean?

Yesterday I was not able to send iMessages from Messages Beta anywhere. This morning when I woke up I could. I didn't change any settings though. What can I say? I guess there was a big time lag from installation until it worked right. Beta software.
But I have a question about the "receive at" settings on my iPhone and iPad.
Currently, messages sent from Messages Beta on my iMac arrive everywhere (iPhone, iPad and in Messages itself) in all these cases:
          (1) Sent to my iPhone number.
          (2) Sent to my Apple id main email address (in my personal domain).
          (3) Sent to my iCloud @me.com address.
          (4) Sent to my cell phone provider's @softbank.ne.jp address.
The latter three are set as verified addresses at my Apple id settings at the Apple site at https://appleid.apple.com.
However, addresses (3) and (4) above are not set in my Messages "receive at" settings. On my iPhone I just have (1) and (2) set. And on my iPad I just have (2) set. Yet iMessages sent to all 4 now arrive everywhere. I wonder what the purpose of the "receive at" settings are in that case?
Thanks,
doug

HI,
I am not sure that I follow exactly what you are saying.
Are you saying that an iMessage sent from Messages to your Phone's phone number also show up and is synced with the Apple ID, the iCloud ID  and the extra email  (on the phone ) ?
I have an Apple ID  (Dial-Up account email)
It has been linked to an iCloud @me.com name  (on the Apple ID site it is now listed as  a Verified email)
In Messages I used the iCloud ID as the "Signing in name" so this is what Messages sends from.
If I then iMessage my iPhone (number) my phone shows two conversations  (it is set to Receive At the Number and the iCloud ID  whilst Caller ID is set to the iCloud ID)
1) the Messages to Number chat
2) the iCould ID sync version of this.
If I iMessage the iCloud ID it only shows up like a synced chat on the Phone rather than a fuill conversation.
I do not get a Messages turning up on the Dial-Up email ID (it is in the phone for email) (my 2)
I do have the (3) iCloud ID but this is Messages Send name and the Phone's alternative Received At
I do have a (4) as at the Apple ID site I have a Google ID listed but I am not getting messages here either.
In System Preferences > Users and Groups (as it is now in Lion) I have my iCloud ID as my Apple ID set up
Similarly in Mail, Contacts and Calendars I have the iCloud ID set to my @me.com name (rather then the Apple ID that created it)
The Dial-up email Original Apple ID is actually Disabled here.
It would seem that the different names and IDs must be linked somewhere but it is likely to be something that looks small in the changes to Lion but has wider consequences than we first see.

  • Color Settings: What do they really do?

The Edit > Color Settings command has choices "No Color Management", "Optimize for Computer Screens", and "Optimize for Printing". The documentation states that the latter two choices select sRGB and AdobeRGB color spaces, respectively.
What's not so clear are the conditions under which this selected color space is imposed. I once imagined that it specifies the working color space that the Editor uses. But if that were true, then I would expect that the image, once brought into the Editor, would be converted to the selected color space. What actually happens is that the image remains in its original color space unless an explicit Image > Convert Color Profile command is issued. (This is evident in the image properties dialog or the print dialog.)
So my question is: What is the actual use that PSE5 makes of the color space that is selected by Edit > Color Settings? Is this just for dealing with source images that are untagged or that are tagged with a profile other than sRGB or AdobeRGB?
It seems to me that it might be desirable to convert sRGB images to AdobeRGB prior to editing them. Then color adjustments or other editing operations could take advantage of the wider gamut of AdobeRGB compared to sRGB. The adjusted results might then include colors that are out-of-gamut for sRGB and that can improve the appearance of the printed output. But perhaps I am mistaken about whether this is really useful in practice.
(The above discussion assumes that the images originate as JPEGs. I realize that the color space story is entirely different for images originating as camera RAWs.)

    Ed.....
The settings in Edit > Colour Settings have, in my opinion, misleading titles. You need to read carefully the small print that appears at the bottom of the Window which describes what each does.
    b No Colour Management......
this is the obvious one. Elements performs no colour management and so you'll see your images just as if you where using any other Non-Colour Managed program...for example IE7. It also means that new documents you create from scratch will have your Monitor Profile associated with them which is not very useful.
b Optimise for Screen and Optimise for Print......
these turn on Colour Management but neither has any effect if the image you are opening already has a profile associated with it. The embedded profile gets honoured and thats what your working space will be.
If your image does not have a profile associated with it then Elements assigns sRGB if you set the 'Screen' option or AdobeRGB if you set the 'Print' option. This may or may not be the right choice for the image, depending on how it was created.
If you create a New Document from scratch then each setting decides the choice of working space - 'Screen' > sRGB, 'Print' > AdobeRGB
In v4 there is also a 'Allow me to Choose' option which checks that the image has a profile and uses that but if not then allows you to choose sRGB or AdobeRGB.
Converting from sRGB to AdobeRGB has no real advantage since the sRGB colour space is smaller. If the image source doesn't have the colours then converting wont produce them. The reverse is different. The conversion process has to decide how to map colours on the edge of the AdobeRGB space into a smaller space and still keep the general perception of colours the same. Typically they are just thrown away in Elements but on full Photoshop you have more control over this process.
RAW images as you say are different but still effected by the Colour Settings. If you have the 'Screen' option set then once you process the RAW image the result is in the sRGB space. Likewise if you choose 'Print' then the image is in AdobeRGB.
RAW images are in a very much wider space than AdobeRGB so you're possibily throwing away more colours. However, keep in mind that your display is probably close to sRGB and your printer may be totally different in its capability of re-producing colours.

  • I'm a recently graduated film student and my macbook pro needs an upgrade... Will be using FCPX, Adobe CS6 etc. Which 15' macbook pro will be best suited for me? I'm most concerned about the processor speeds (what do they really mean in english?)

I need a new 15" MBP for film editing. The processor speed numbers are confusing.

The Tech Specs for the MBPr are here:http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/ and you can see both 15" models come with the i7 processor, one at 2.0 and the other at 2.3 GHz.  The processors are identical except for the clock speed, which directly indicates how many calculations a second they can perform.  If you are doing things like editing or rendering or ray tracing, heavy duty computational things, the faster the processor, the less time it takes to do the task.
But the 2.3 GHz machine has even more, twice the memory and twice the storage capacity.  With film work that will get to be important since you can load more directly into memory where it is readily accessible to the processor, and twice the storage so you do not have to move material to an external drive so soon.  Both of which will contribute to faster workload turn around for you.
For your needs, the faster machine with twice the memory and twice the SSD storage will be the thing you need.  And, keep in mind that the MBP cannot be upgraded after purchase like in the past.  So get all you will need now at the time of purchase.

  • EQ settings, what do they do???

    Hello all,
I just bought a B&W Zeppelin, and it is SO COOL! But I have a question. If you go into the EQ settings in iPod on your iPhone, you can choose bass boost, or treble boost, but not both at the same time, which I *completely don't understand*, so as a work around, there are about 20 EQ settings, with names like: rock, jazz, funk, etc. Is there one that will boost both treble and bass???? I cannot find any info on what these named settings actually do. Does anyone know? Does anyone have a Zeppelin, and could tell me what their favorite settings are?
    Thanks so much!

I do not buy music from iTunes as they don't offer Lostless Compression, as far as I know.
    No one offers loss-less compression.
    CDs are compressed too.
So what ever source you're getting your songs from is compressed.
Now you could argue forever what aac and wav compression limits are.
In the end I find that listening through a portable music device (like the iphone) has no real noticeable difference between "loss-less" CD extraction and high datarate aac; or itunes bought aac.
I find a good pair of studio headphones will let you hear the limits of the iphone or ipod as a device, rather then the audio format.
You'd be better off buying into a 10 bit extended CD player and disks if you really are worried about data-rates and audio quality.
But then you'll also need to get a great amp and speakers.
At which time you'll probably want to do research on Audio Equalizers, and complex equalization patterns. I believe there is a common set of equalization sets and Apple has included these in their idevices.
And as a poster above said, open itunes.
Open the equalizer window and choose the presets there.
You'll instantly see the effects the equalizer presets have on the different frequency ranges.
But in the end it's up to you personally if you can hear the difference between CDs and purchased aac files.

  • Sequencer Settings - what do they affect?

First time user here, I'm a little confused about the documentation about the Sequencer Settings (Control+0), the settings such as quality, codec, etc, what exactly do they affect (and by that I mean at what level).
Do they affect the way they are rendered as I am previewing my project or when I do the final render/export?
Does it affect quality and codec if I use FC to export or if I send to Compressor will it affect the way Compressor renders it? what if I use pass-through settings with compressor? Will the Sequencer Settings in FC affect that too? Basically I'm looking for the scope of how much of FC's Sequencer Settings affect.

It effects your performance and rendering in FCP. It effects your export functions and output to tape. It does not effect send to or share.

  • What does "74559.emlx" couldn't be copied to "Messages" because there isn't enough space, really mean?  How do I find out what is taking up so much space?

Help!!  I am trying to figure out what "74559.emlx" is.  I was delating a email message when this poped up!?  I higlighed the message and then hit the delete button.
I understand that my computer is full, so now I am trying to move this over to an external hard-drive, how do I know if it's been moved or just copied?  How can I see what is on the computer and how "big" it is?
Sorry for all the questions, ANY help is much appreciated!!!

"Other" is everything that isn't in one of the other categories. For instance, it includes all your user documents that are not movie, audio, or photo files.
Regardless of that, you need to use an external drive at least large enough to backup your entire user folder (the one with a House icon). Better is to get one at least as large as your built-in drive & use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to clone the whole built-in drive to it.

  • Luminosity/Color blend modes - what do they really do?

I know what the documentation says that they do, but it doesn't appear to be the truth. For example, if I take my image and overlay it with a 50% gray layer set to Luminosity mode, I would expect to see the hue and saturation of my image, with the luminosity of every pixel set to 50%, but that isn't what actually happens.
Have I misunderstood what these modes are supposed to do? Can anyone enlighten me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Aaron

    Aaron,
The weighting factors for R G and B were determined long ago via subjective responses in tests on thousands of people. there have since been other recommended weights. No set of weights is valid over the whole range of color values. In an imperfect world you compromise. Nowhere is it explicitly stated, but Photoshop has stuck with the older weights. You can verify that for yourself using the Info palette. Other applications may use other luminosity definitions. Also in Photoshop, Brightness is taken to be the highest of the R G and B color values. I think you were equating brightness and luminosity. They are decidedly different parameters. Nor is Luminosity the same as the L parameter in LAB (most often called "Lightness" but often "Luminance"). You won't find that LAB Lightness is preserved by the Luminosity blend and certainly not Brightness. Using the Info palette, you can also see that the Luminosity blend mode retains the hue and saturation of the base while adopting the luminosity of the blend color.

  • Static Context: What Does it REALLY mean?

    Friends,
I really having this trouble of grabbing the idea of static context vs non-static context.
Lets say I have a static method, is that mean that all items (variables and calls) inside it are assumed to be static as well?
    Thanks in advance.

Any statement or expression inside the static method is said to "occur in a static context". In such a method - like the traditional main() method - only static members and methods can be used.
(Statements and expressions occuring in lots of other places are also said to occur in a static context - see the JLS http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/third_edition/html/classes.html#296300 for details. In a loose sense what these contexts have in common is that they "belong" to the class as a whole, rather than to any specific instance: they relate to class wide things and operations.)

  • COPA Acronym - What does it really mean???

    Hello All,
I have a very simple question that has been often addressed to me for which I truly can't provide a bona-fide answer to. That question is "What does the acronym CO-PA actually stand for"?
I know the universally accepted response would be Profitability Analysis but what does the CO portion of the acronym really stand for? Is it Cost/Operability or Cost of Operations or what????
    Thanks!!

CO stands for Controlling and PA stands for Profitability Analyis. So the combination of CO-PA stands for Controlling-Profitability Analysis.
Profitability Analysis is one of the sub-modules, along with Cost Center Accounting (CCA) and others, that's part of the Controlling module in R3/ECC. Controlling is pretty much Managerial Accounting (as opposed to FI - Financials which is Financial Accounting).

Trouble is, the source is always there, so there is nothing that "ends", and on WiFi it should be nice and stable. • Mdworker deny file-read-data, what does it really mean?

I get numerous log posts like this:
    3/17/14 7:22:57.561 AM sandboxd[5688]: ([4412]) mdworker(4412) deny file-read-data /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Jack Shelton’s iMac/2014-03-17-042247/JackHD/System/Library/Fonts/TimesLTMM (import fstype:hfs fsflag:4809018 flags:48200000056 diag:0 uti:com.apple.font-suitcase plugin:/Library/Spotlight/Font.mdimporter - find suspect file using: sudo mdutil -t 235288)
    My questiions are:
What is being sandboxed, the mdworker or the file Times LTMM or the mdimporter?
Which one has the sudo command in it?
What does the -t flag/option mean?  Looking it up via man mdutil in the terminal, it does't exist.
I saw this type of post quite frequently in Mavericks so much so that I decided to start over from scratch.  I wiped the HD including the HD Recovery partition and installed OS X 10.6.8.  I am now in Mountain Lion and have reinstalled MS Office 2011 and loaded the main identity data from my recovered files.  I did not see any adverse log posts until I ran the first time machine backup.
I hope someone can clear the air for me with perhaps a way to fix it.

Thank you Baltwo.  It's a major relief to know that the sudo command is being used by an Apple app/process and not by a file that's not supposed to have it..  However a few more questions if you don't mind.
Is the font file the suspect file or is it this particular mdworker?
If the font file is the suspect file will a process or app that calls for it be allowed to use it?
Which process/app/file invoked the sandbox and deny file-read-data?
What is the role of the mdimporter?
These questions are part of my attempt to understand how a large part of the files on my computer and Time Machine become corrupted when I first installed Mavericks.  Mainly .plist (and other plain text files), .png, jpeg (and other picture types) and pkg info bundles would have thier icons and file Kind changed to Unix Executable files, spreadssheets and doc/docx would become genrandom (or something similar).  I became aware of this when my machine began freezing up.  I made several clean reinstalls and the problems would reoccur on plugging in the Time Machine.  I eventually recovered the files I wanted from the Time Machine but I had to use another iMac with an older OS X.  I repartitioned my machine and rebuilt it to Mountain Lion and i'm in the process of reloading with what I hope are non corrupted files. Although I still see log posts like "Locum[6230]: Connection with distnoted server was invalidated" every time I paste a folder or file.  I don't know what that means but it doesn't seem to cause any further reaction or posts.
My apologizes for bothering you with alll this and thanks for your insight.

I know it's alot of WARN messages, but they fall into two categories:
    1. Jar file not found
    2. Something does not implement any Service methods
The first one I'm confused as to why I'd get it because I installed JBoss and didn't alter ANYTHING, yet I get those messages. So it means that they didn't include some jars that it needs. Why? What does it mean?
The second one, I'm also wondering if it's just a useless warning, or is there something I need to do to make these things hook up?
