Messages recognizing iPhone recipients?

Question

When attempting to send SMS via Messages from my computer to a known iPhone used, Messages is only recognizing certain contacts even when "iPhone" is the designated type of device in my Address Book.  Nor when I manually enter the phone # (+1 [1234567890] no spaces, no parentheses, etc…] I know to be an iPhone.
It will only allow me use Messages to the person's email, which in turn creates multiple conversations between my iPhone and MBA/iMac [use both same result]. 
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

HI,
To be clear.
SMS is an AIM thing in the iChat side of Messages
The Buddy's telephone number as added as If it is an AIM Buddy to a Buddy List that Logs into AIM (AIM, @mac.com @Me.com and others)
Your computer has to be set up as if it is in the United States and the Phone has to be in the United States and on a carrier that acceps AIM's SMS forwarding.
iMessages
As a rule the Message Beta with a Contact chosen from the Contacts list (Address Book) will use iMessages.
You should be able to use the Name in the "To" spot at the top of the Message Chat window to Select the Phone Number of a Buddy.
