Messages remain marked as unread

When I open emails they are often not picked up as being read.  The record stands at 20 minutes with an email open before it is considered as read.  Closing an email does not help. Closing and re-opening an email does not help.
Any help appreciated.

I don't use BT Yahoo! webmail much but know that spellcheck works in the older Classic Mail, having declined to upgrade because of various problems that have been reported. More here: Recover Classic Mail.
I would be surprised if the latest version lacks spellcheck; best thing to do is wait for some more informed advice here. If all else fails, you could try reverting to the Classic version or, better still, download an email client such as Thunderbird.

  • Some read mail items remain marked as unread

Some read mail items remain marked as unread (even after I've read them).
I have to manually mark them as read.
This doesn't happen to all mail items, just some.
    How can I fix this?

A few discoveries I made this morning.
One is that disabling GPGMail seems to solve the problem, or at least significantly reduce its occurrence.
Another is that with GPGMail enabled, it seems to depend on how quickly one opens an email. I can't say for sure that this is a hard and fast rule, but messages staying unread seems to be more of a problem if you've just entered the folder or just been viewing another message and suddenly change to an unread one. It's as though GPGMail causes Mail to need some time to think things through.
A third is that if you have multiple mail accounts, a workaround to reset the unread count exists. If a mail folder in Account One is having problems, you can switch to a folder in Account Two, possibly wait an interval of time (not sure what that interval would be), then switch back to your original Account One folder. That seems to force a refresh of the unread count, without needing a folder rebuild (with consequent loss of expanded threads, etc).
However, for the time being, I've just disabled GPGMail. I can re-enable it as needed, by the looks of it, and it's not as though I've really needed to use it yet.
I could wish, though, that Apple offered proper GPG support, or at least that they made enough of their API available that third parties could do a proper job instead of an ugly and somewhat broken hack. (I've also seen complaints that Apple like to change their API without telling anyone, just to keep third-party developers on their toes =P.) I suppose another problem is lack of available time. Which I also suffer from, so I don't think a "real solution" is forthcoming from this quarter, at least.

  • A message is marked as unread - so why doesn't the Inbox count show it?

There is a message marked as unread (the little blue ball) in an IMAP account's inbox.
So why doesn't the Inbox show a (1) next to it to indicate there are unread messages?
    doug

    Thanks for your replies, people.
I actually just created this IMAP account about a week ago.
Yesterday I deleted a separate, POP3 account and recreated it as IMAP. At that time everything got re-indexed (at least the activity window was going on forever about rebuilding and reindexing this and that).
Rebuilding from the Mail menu doesn't help.
I might try removing and re-adding the IMAP account or the entire re-index later if I find this behavior annoys me too much. Will that lose my replied-to indicators?
So anyway, what I am seeing is not normal? If you go to a message and mark it "unread" does your Inbox for that account go up by 1?
    Thanks,
    doug

  • Ovi Messages remains stuck as unread

    Ovi 3.1.1.90
My SMS messages in Ovi remains stuck as unread, cannot mark them read even after clicking dozen of times.
Started with 1, and accumulating over the past 2-3 months, now I have 9 unread messages. The ones that remains unread are random.
    <VENT>  Stupid Nokia software.
    Any fix?

Same here, I'm up to 16 now. Nokia must know about this as there have been other threads. They obviously don't care. How hard can it be just to fix annoying bugs like this?

  • New messages being marked as unread (before I've read them!)

Starting this morning some of my new, unread messages are being marked as unread by Mail.app.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem, for the last few days. I don't know if it's Mail for Snow Leopard, Mail for iOS 4, mail for iOS 3.2, or Gmail that's the problem. I'll turn things off at some of my devices and try to narrow it down, then report back.

  • Gmail (imap) messages not marked as read

Hi - I've had this problem for a while. My gmail messages show up in my Apple Mail inbox, and when I read them they are marked read in that inbox.
However there is also a folder for Gmail on the Apple mail sidebar, and in the All Mail folder under gmail the message remains marked as unread.
It bugs me to have have that big red number of 'unread' messages in my sidebar – any way to get rid of it?
    Txs.

    @gizmo78,
Select your inbox, then select Mailbox>Rebuild
    ---if that doesn't work---
    Quit Apple Mail
move this folder to the desktop:
    [yourharddrive]/Users/[yourhomefolder]/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reopen Apple Mail
You should get a "importing mail" message, which is normal. It's just recreating the mail index.

  • Mail messages are constantly marked as "Unread"

On certain mail messages, I cannot get the message to remain as "Marked Read"  - the message continues to come to my Mac as "New".  I have tried deleting message, manually marking it as Read.  Nothing seems to work.  Please share any advice.

This stopped happening as mysteriously as it started for me. The only change made on my end is that I added some seemingly unrelated filter Rules - around the same time (i can't be entirely certain if it stopped before or after the Rule changes) the proble with sent messages being marked as unread stopped. I doubt that the Rules actually had a direct effect, though perhaps it altered the structure of memory enough to stop the bug from occurring (something which I've seen many times in my 40 years of programming).

  • Sent messages are being marked as "unread"

Ever since installing OS X 10.8.3, both my iMac and MBP have been leaving sent messages marked as "unread".  Not all outgoing messages are being left in this unread state, but most are.  Any ideas on why this might be happening and how to fix it?  Is anybody else having the problem?  A search of the forums shows some old material that might be related, but I don't see anything that has any answers.
    TIA for you help.

  • Using Applescript to track Mail "Mark as Unread"

    Hi,
I'm new to actionscript, I've never written anything using it. I'm a web developer, so I know JS, PHP and languages like that, but Applescript seems quite different to me.
Anyways, I would like to know if it is possible to have a script in the background with an event handler that will trigger additional actions when a message is marked as unread?
Pretty much, I want some code (that I will work out later) to be executed when a user marks a message as unread in Mail. ("Message"->"Mark"->"As Unread" OR ⇧⌘U)
    Thanks

    I'm new to actionscript
    You mean AppleScript, right?
I would like to know if it is possible to have a script in the background with an event handler that will trigger additional actions when a message is marked as unread?
Not directly. The ideal way of doing this would be for Mail.app to have some kind of option to attach AppleScripts to events within the application. It's entirely possible to do within the OS, but few applications take advantage of it - that includes Mail.app, so there's no way to have Mail.app call your script directly.
The closest you could get would be a background script that silently polled Mail.app for the status of all messages and somehow detect when a message went from Read to Unread. This could be unwieldy, especially if there are many, many messages in the mailbox - you pretty much have to keep track of every read message and scan for any unread messages that are in the previous read messages list. This option doesn't work if you want to perform some real-time action such as interact with the user since there would always be some delay between the user action (marking the message unread) and the script noticing it.

  • Nokia Messaging keeps marking the whole Gmail fold...

Every time a new message is received in my Gmail folder on E55 (v. 022.009.C00.01), all old messages are marked as UNREAD, although they have already been READ. This is very annoying and seems I have no way to solve it by myself (I've already deleted the account, reinstalled, changed parameters, and so on).
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Any support by Nokia? I'm a bit concerned about their lack of responsiveness... Moreover, despite stickers on phone box, Nokia Messaging seems to be very far from being stable.

  • Messages automatically marked as read in yahoo and unread in Mail

I typically use yahoo.com to view/read my yahoo mail, but I would like the option of viewing in Mail as well. However, when I launch my Mail account, all messages remain "unread" (whether I've read them or not in yahoo.com). And when I go to my yahoo.com account after opening Mail, all messages (whether I've read them or not in Mail) are automatically marked as "read". This is extremely frustrating as I would like both Mail and yahoo.com to reflect read and unread emails appropriately.
I do not have this problem when I use the Mail app on my iPhone.
    Please help! Thank you!

UPDATE: In addition to all mail being marked as "unread" in yahoo.com, most messages older than a few days old are also deleted. They still appear in Mail, but I need to read them in yahoo.com as well. In addition, Mail does not contain the folders from yahoo.com, so all messages appear in Mail as one big "unread" mess in my inbox. Again, these issues are not a problem with the iPhone app. Thank you!

  • New iphone, synced with Outlook, but messages remain 'unread'.

I just moved to a new iphone 3gs and even though I didn't' change anything on my computer my iphone email remains marked 'unread' with the little blue dot and notification numbers.
I see people have this problem a lot, but previously when I opened outlook and just downloaded email the blue dots would disappear on the iphone. I could almost see it happen live if I updated the iphone email. I didn't even have to read the email on my computer, it just automatically recognized it was downloaded by outlook and therefore removed the blue dot and notification.
I should note that in my outlook settings I have never had it set to remove email from server right away (I have always left my email on the server for a week to get email on the road and as a backup for HD failure).
So for whatever reason when I set up the new iphone email (had to do it manually) this time it does not know I've downloaded the email to Outlook and does not automatically take the blue dot away. I'm not sure how it did it before but I would like to have it working again.
    Any thoughts?

My iPhone email works with my Gmail account.
Since going to OS 3.0, I've found that the unread indicator on the mail icon is wrong if I delete new messages without reading them first.
I now seem to be stuck with 1 inbox mail unread despite all my inbox mails being read (and there's only 7 of them, not easy to miss).

  • Messages being marked unread during search

When I do a search of all subfolders of email, often summary files are rebuilt during the search. When that happens, some messages (not all, seems random) are marked "unread" here and there throughout the hierarchical structure of my subfolders.
This does not happen in all folders, so the behavior is erratic, but happens every time a search results in summary file rebuild. How do I report this bug?

    You can report bugs here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/index.cgi?
I assume the search subfolders emails that are marked as 'unread' were originally marked as 'read' and not emails you had missed, so unread already - bold?

  • Messages not marked read if last unread message

I sort incoming mail into various folders
I use the "Move to next unread" button to go through messages
I configured mail to be marked read immediately upon display
This works perfectly till I reach the last unread message in any folder - clicking the "move to next unread" button will move me to the next folder with an unread message, BUT, the last unread message in the just exited folder is left marked unread
I've tried compacting my folders, deleting my .msf files, and, the 'repair folder' option in the properties pages of the folders, but nothing has worked
Can any one suggest something else to try?

re: Does it do this if you use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move to next in the list; the last one?
''The down arrow key only moves the focus to the following folder, and does not land on or display a message in that folder ''
If the focus is on the Folder in the Folder Pane , then the arrows will move up and down the Folder Pane list.
If the focus in on a selected email in the list of emails you can use the up and down arrows to move up and down the list. As you select an email, it is displayed in the Message Pane below and marked as read. I use this method alot as it is quicker than moving the mouse over any buttons.
I'm trying to work out if this is something related only to the 'Next unread button' or whether something else is conflicting. I presume if you click on the email it is marked as read..
So please tell me if the use of arrows to select emails, still causes the issue.
Test if the Sort Order effects the marking of the last unread email.
Please select the following Sort Order and tell me if the 'Next unread' button works with a different Sort by order.
View > Sort by > Date - Descending - unthreaded
Do you use the 'Quick Filter Bar' to 'Show only unread messages' - icon looks likea pair of sunglasses?
If no. could you please test.
Select the 'Show only unread messages' - then use the 'Move to the Next unread mesage' button.
Does it still fail to mark the last email as read?
What version of Thunderbird are you using?
    What OS ?
Confirm Pop or imap mail account?
Please test whether their are any addons causing a conflict:
    In Thunderbird
'Help > 'REstart with Addons disabled'
then use the Next unread button method to see if it works ok.
If it works ok then an addon is causing an issue.

  • E75 email: messages marked as unread

    Hi,
Yesterday I had to reset my Nokia E75. Now it's up and running again. However, after I re-installed my hotmail e-mail I have a problem:
    - 30 (old) e-mails are loaded and marked as unread
    - when I receive an e-mail and I read the e-mail on my laptop, the message stays 'unread' on my E75
    - the other way around, the same problem exists. If I check an e-mail on my phone, the e-mail stays unread. So if I check my e-mail on my laptop, it looks like my e-mail is still unread.
Anybody any clue how to change this?
Futher, I tried to change the synchronisation hours and synchronisation interval. But each time I change this, it won't stay. If I take another look 2 minutes later, the old settings are back.
    Thanks for your help!

Not sure what you mean. But I deleted my entire mailbox and tried to re-install. For some reason it seems to work now.
    Thanks for your reply anyway.
