Messages Screen Sharing Ends with a "Hanging" Desktop Screen

Since the OS X 10.8.1 update, Messages screen sharing – that used to work well in my environment – everytime ends up with a hanging desktop screen. That means: The screen of the desktop, where Messages screen sharing took place, freezes. I have to swipe to another desktop in order to successfully quit Messages via the dock context menu. After that, its desktop screen is responsive again.
This happens independant of who ends the screen sharing session.
It used to work seemlessly before OS X 10.8.1. So I think there is an issue with this update, Messages and the screens (desktops) management.

Hi,
As Screen Sharing does tend to involve a change from the Shared Screen at one resolution changing to your screen at possibly another (which for some produces the White Screen In Sharing) I thought it might pay to look at the method when wanting to go back to your own screen during a Screen Sharing Chat
I would still report it here
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html
Obviously you have to use some of the free text area to state your OS version and Messages version at it will not appears in any of the drop downs.

  • Screen Sharing ends up in a black screen

    This morning I enabled Screen Sharing on the computer I use at home. I'm trying to connect from work and, for some reason, after I enter the username and password I get a window with a black screen, then nothing happens.
    My brother says that at home the computer says that I'm connected, but I just can't seem to see anything from here.
    Both computers are running Leopard, and to connect I use the program Screen Sharing within +System > Core Services+.

    The black screen rather than an error message confirms that a connection has been established. The screen remaining black for a length of time probably means that the connection is very slo-o-o-o-w. Wait longer and the remote screen will appear, BUT if you have to wait that long you are likely to find that anything you try to do on the remote machine will take such a long time that the whole endeavour is pretty futile.
    You need to find some way of improving the connection.

  • Screen Sharing issues with ML and SL  with dual displays??

    Don't know if this is a ML issue or was present in Lion (which I never upgraded to)
    Setup...
    Old setup was 2010ish MBP and only 2006 iMac.  Both with SL 10.6.8 and both have two monitors...no issues.
    Upgraded to ML on the MBP on release.  Realtively painless process.  I tried screen sharing today and I get odd responses with the MBP to the iMac.  Just so everyone knows, screen 1 is the main iMac screen and screen 2 is the additional monitor.  When showing both screens I could see all screen realestate.  However, when I changed to only display screen 1 I started having issues.  I couldn't get the entire screen to fit within the window nor scroll to show areas not displayed.  Sometimes switching between fit in window and no fit, I would get a blank screen.  Screen 2 only displayed and all is fine.  I noticed on screen 1 that there was a little black bar or open space on the bottom of the window that was exactly the same size that was missing from the top.  No ability to fit or scroll would allow the black space to move so that the menu bar on the top of the main monitor would display.
    After doing a bit of searching with no luck and scratching my head, I took a look at the Arrangement screen in the display settings.  Wouldn't you know it that the main screen (having a smaller resolution than screen 2) was aligned so that the top of each display was even with each other leaving a small space on the bottom of screen 1 compared to screen 2.  When I moved screen 1 in the arrangement screen to a more drastic alignment to verify this was the problem...screen sharing crashed when going from both screens to only display screen 1.  Tried screen sharing again going from two displays to one, crashed again.
    It appears there is some sort of bug or maybe ML and SL screen sharing doesn't like each other when the remote computer has two monitors.
    Submitting bug report to Apple but was curious if anyone else has seen this or knows a work around.
    Mike

    I have a similar configuration (Lion 2011 MBP and SL 2009 iMac w/ second display). After installing the recent Remote Desktop update things went awry when trying to share the iMac SL displays with the MPB Lion.
    The displays on the iMac are the same resolution, however the second display physically sits a bit lower than the iMac display, so I had adjusted the arrangement to compensate the different heights. The second display is located physically to the left of the iMac display, but that shouldn't have any effect as far as I'm concerned. Screen sharing had worked in this config until the recent Remote Desktop update (on Lion).
    I thought about what you mentioned about the display screen arrangement, so I decided to just test it for myself, arranging both displays side-by-side on the displays arrangement control panel. Surprisingly, it worked!
    I do consider the Remote Desktop update to be the culprit and there must be some bug associated with that. I'm getting ready to submit a bug report, so hopefully we'll see a fix soon.

  • Can a touch screen be replaced with a non-touch screen? Still struggling to Find the answer

    Can a touch screen be replaced with a non-touch screen?  Still struggling to Find the answer.
    My son has a 3 month old laptop with a touchscreen.  Unfortunately he cracked the screen.    The actual picture is fine, but the screen cover is cracked.    After much searching we found the replacement cost…..all in is some $500.  I am trying to find out if the screen can be replaced with a non touch screen.  This will save him $250.   I cannot seem to get the answer from HP, despite having been a client for many years.
    He ordered the HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition customizable Notebook PC. The product number is XC102AV.
    It also shows a product number ww146av .  The connector is on the bottom left of the screen.
    I am pretty sure that the part number, per the manual, is 631019-001
    I had been getting helpful replies from “Erico”, but have not heard back on this issue.

    Hi,
    I am still waiting for an answer as well. I haven't forgotten you. Since it is just after the holiday period perhaps an answer will come reasonably soon.

  • Screen sharing is not working at login screen

    Hi:
    I need a little help.  I have a headless Mac (System A) that I just upgraded to Mountain Lion (not Mountain Lion Server) from Snow Leopard Server.
    From another Mac (System B) running Mountain Lion I was previously able to use Screen Sharing to remotely acess System A's login screen.  Now, after upgrading from SL Server to ML I can only use Screen Sharing to remotely control System A from System B AFTER I have already logged into System A using a direct attached keyboard and screen.  In other words, I lost the ability to access the login screen on Sys A.
    Anyone have any ideas here???

    I was having the same issue. In my case, I had copied /System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app to the /Applications folder, some time ago. I did this so I could more easily launch Screen Sharing via Spotlight.  Because of this, when I launched Screen Sharing, I was executing the 'old' Screen Sharing app. I re-copied the 'new' app to /Applications, and all is well! Hope this helps!

  • Screen Sharing / vnc with OS X 10.5.6 fails

    I can not get the Screen Sharing that comes with OS X 10.5.6 to work with any vnc client. The server is my laptop, an MBP 2.4 GHz Intel running OS X 10.5.6.
    *I enable Screen Sharing by doing the following:*
    1) +System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing+ is checked
    2) +System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing > Computer Settings > Anyone may request permission to control screen+ is checked
    3) +System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing > Computer Settings > VNC viewers may control screen with password+ is checked and I've entered a password
    4) I also have Remote Login enabled for SSH access, but no other services are enabled.
    *I see two different behaviors depending on one of two clients that I try using:*
    1) +Chicken of the VNC v2.0b4+ running on same machine- Always says "Connection Terminated / Authentication Failed" without ever asking for a password. Logs the following in system.log (dates, hostnames and pids removed):
    Chicken of the VNC: Server reports Version RFB 003.889
    Chicken of the VNC: Bogus RFB Protocol Version Number from AppleRemoteDesktop, switching to protocol 003.007
    I believe that the information in system.log is OK, and is just warning me that Chicken of the VNC is working around Apple's strange protocol version.
    2) +TightVNC 1.3.9 on Windows XP sp2+- Says "Security type requested", then asks for a password. I enter it, click OK and tightvnc simply waits endlessly.
    *Other Notes:*
    1) I have tried configuring and starting the server using kickstart from the command line as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370 (+sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all+)
    2) I have tried unchecking +VNC viewers may control screen with password+, but in this case Chicken of the VNC says "Please configure Apple Remote Desktop to allow VNC Viewers to control the screen. Unknown authType 30,31,32" and TightVNC says "Server did not offer supported security type!"
    3) If I disable the Screen Sharing feature that comes out of the box with OS X, I CAN install and successfully run the OSXVnc server available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/osxvnc/. In this case, both Chicken of the VNC and TightVNC are able to connect.
    *So Apple's Screen Sharing does not work. Does anyone know what the problem is? Are there any log files I can look at, or is there another way I can debug this? I'm not impressed. :)*

    Thanks for the suggestion. It was possible that one of these files had become corrupted, so I tried moving each of these files to another directory but unfortunately I'm still seeing the same behavior.
    Here's what happens with each of these files individually after they're moved:
    1) When I set the VNC password in the system prefs, com.apple.VNCSettings.txt gets re-created (with the same contents as the original unless I change the password, so that just looks like a hash of the password).
    2) com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist also gets recreated when I change the system prefs. If I use "sudo plutil -convert xml1 com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist" I get the following:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>ARD_AllLocalUsers</key>
    <true/>
    <key>ARD_AllLocalUsersPrivs</key>
    <integer>2</integer>
    <key>ScreenSharingReqPermEnabled</key>
    <true/>
    <key>VNCLegacyConnectionsEnabled</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    3) For me, com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist does not exist.
    4) Interestingly, com.apple.ARDAgent.plist does not get created until I run "sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -restart -agent -privs -all". Its XML contents are as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>AdminConnectInfoList</key>
    <dict/>
    <key>AgentLogLevel</key>
    <integer>3</integer>
    <key>ServerConnectInfoList</key>
    <dict/>
    <key>Version</key>
    <real>3</real>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Looking at this, I tried setting ScreenSharingReqPermEnabled to false, but that didn't help. Then I increased AgentLogLevel to 100 and got a lot of output in system.log (12:28:45 is when I restart the server and 12:29:34 is when I try to connect):

    I will try to watch fs_usage more closely to see what else gets modified and accessed, but I'm increasingly suspicious that there's simply a bug which is showing up under whatever specific conditions I have on my machine. Perhaps the included log info will trigger an idea for someone.

  • Screen sharing not working after Remote Desktop 3.2 install

    OK, I think I screwed it up.
    I'm moving to a new iMac running Mountain Lion, and I need to use Remote Desktop.  I own Remote Desktop 3.2 on DVD, so I installed from disk and launched the app.  My plan was to download the latest update to 3.6.x, but I figured I would launch it to enter my license key and then quit and download the update.
    I was given an error that newer components were already installed and clicked the Quit button.  Ugh.  Next I went to Apple's download site and downloaded the newest update but when I ran that installer it told me it could not install on my drive.
    My grand plan has now left me with no Remote Desktop, and the built-in Screen Sharing core service beach balls when I try to connect to a remote client.
    Is there a way to save me from myself?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,
    You could try removing all the installed components manually and then try again (install, don't open but update right away).
    According to the installer the files are located in:
    /Applications/Remote Desktop.app (that one was hard to find )
    /Library/Application Support/Apple/Remote Desktop/
    /Library/Preferences/com.Apple.ARDAgent.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.Apple.RemoteDesktop.plist
    /Library/Receipts/
    /Library/Widgets/RemoteDesktop.wdgt
    (not sure if the following files tie into other parts of the OS so removing them may cause issues)
    /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement
    /usr/bin/share/man/man1
    perhaps a permission repair after all parts have been deleted and a restart before trying again.

  • Screen Sharing issue with VNC from Mac to PC - Black Screen

    I have a Mac mini at my place of work. From it, using the built-in VNC capabilities in Leopard, I am able to successfully VNC to any Windows-based PC. I have a Mac Pro at home that tomorrow I am taking to my office. From my home I VPN into my office and want to VNC to my computers from the Mac Pro sitting at home. VPN connects just fine and when I attempt to VNC, I get a response from the computer at work and am prompted for the password and then I get connected. The problem is that the VNC screen is black. I can see that I am connected to the right computer because it's name is at the top, but there is basically no display. Tomorrow the Mac Pro will leave my home to be placed in my office. However, I am going to get an iMac for my home and need this functionality. I anticipate that I will have a similar problem with the iMac and would like to get it fixed now. Any thoughts on why I am seeing this? BTW...VNC works fine using Chicken of the VNC on my old iMac G3 running Panther over the VPN.
    Thanx...Jon

    I have the exact same problem! I can connect using RealVNC viewer, but, on Leopard's in-built Screen Sharing app, I can authenticate, and see the computer name on top, but, there is simply no display! I have opened all ports on my router, and completely doing away with the Leopard firewall also doesn't seem to help!
    Any leads yet?

  • Screen Sharing problem with dual monitors in 10.6

    When I'm using Screen Sharing from my Macbook to my iMac with dual displays (10.6.1 on both machines) It works fine when I initially connect, but when I switch to Display 1, it shows me Display 1, but though my cursor moves, I can't click on anything. It won't let me go back to viewing both displays either, and changing from Adaptive to Full Quality or vice-versa makes no difference, as does Scaling. This happens whether I'm on my local network or using Back-to-my-Mac. It was working fine under Leopard, but has been exhibiting this behavior since the 10.6 upgrade.
    Mark

    This is a very irritating bug. One thing that has worked for me a couple of times (I think a couple of times it also didn't work) is to turn on mirroring. Screen sharing then only shows one monitor, since they are both the same. I'm not sure if the monitors have to have the same resolution for this to work, mine do. The nice thing about this is that before quitting the screen sharing app you can just turn mirroring off again and it will go back to normal. It's easiest to do this by enabling the 'show displays in menu bar' in your displays preferences.

  • Audio through Screen Sharing.app but not Remote Desktop?

    Can anyone enlighten me as to why audio from a remote Mountain Lion machine can be heard through the Screen Sharing.app but not Apple Remote Desktop? Do they use different protocols?

    Your ssh command should look something like:
    ssh -L 22590:localhost:5900 remove.mac.system.address
    Then you connect using
    Finder -> Go -> Connect to server -> vnc://localhost:22590
    Have you been doing anything close to that?

  • IChat screen sharing problem with AIM

    Hi,
    I have two laptops - one is a MacBook and the other is a PowerBook. Both are running Leopard. At first, when I had tried using the screen sharing feature of iChat, it had worked flawlessly on both the Bonjour network as well as the AIM network.
    Now, for some reason, I cannot get screen sharing to work using the AIM network. I am able to conduct text chats, audio chats and video chats, but no screen sharing over AIM. Screen sharing over the Bonjour network continues to work without a problem.
    Any advice?

    For some reason ichat does not work when internet sharing is on.
    Therefore that might be the problem with your screen sharing since you seem to not be able to get it to work (audio is part of the feature and if you have recently relocated you might not realize that internet sharing is on).

  • HP TouchSmart IQ504 trys to access but ends with the Recovery Manager Screen and freezes or locks.

    Hi Everyone,
    When turning on the HP TouchSmart IQ504, it freezes or locks at the Recovery Manager Screen.  There have been some good suggestions to help with this issue, but so far, none have solved the problem.  Control + Alt + Deleter has been tried several times.  I did install some anti-virus programs before the computer failed to respond.  Have tapped the F8 key and have tried every solution it offers...nothing happens to get the TouchSmart IQ504 going again..  Have also used the esc key, F9, F10 & F11.  Nothing with any of those solves the issue.  Don't know for certain the operating system, but think it is Windows Vista.  And I can't check it now to know what operating system is installed.  Can anyone out there help.  Would appreciate that very much.
    Kindest regards,
    from Skowghee

    Hello skowghee,
    I understand that you are not able to boot into windows.
    Turn off the computer.
    As you power it back on tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.
    Run the startup test.
    This will test all the hardware in the system and detect any problems.
    Let me know how everything goes.

  • Screen will froze with a pixelated grey screen

    Does anybody know if the below error I'm getting is a software issue or a Hardware failure.  My MBP freezes with a pixalated screen and after restarting, which includes another pixalated boot screen with a grey square on the Apple Logo, the MBP go back to normal screen resolution, with the below kernel panic message:

    Start here: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/troubleshooting/
    You will probably arrive at the point in which you must restore the iPhone. If you do here is the procedure. Follow it exactly:
    Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release only the Sleep/Wake button.
    Continue pressing and holding the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    Note: If you see the "low battery" screen, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
    Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears (iTunes icon and USB connector) release the Home button.
    If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the "recovery mode" alert ("iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode").
    Use iTunes to restore the device.
    If you do not see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Select the device in iTunes and choose "restore from backup".

  • My Mac Os X screen has started with lines across the screen, then it got worst more than half of the screen is not responding right. Please help.

    Please reply as soon as you can.

    You can run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. It may point out a hardware failure but to be honest I think you need to take the machine in for some professional diagnostics. It's possible the graphics card is failing.
