Messages will open nothing appears(with wait cursor)

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, everytime i open Messages, it opens, and the top bar becomes Message settings but nothing appears and the wait cursor keeps turning forever so I have to force quit.
I have tried opening it from the applications folder and resetting keychain as i read in other threads but it still doesnt work.
I still get message notifications and the badge appears when i have a message. And the app and accounts are all working on my iphone.
I keep sending error report to apple every time i force quit but it seems not enough people have this issue...
Please help, it's bugging me so much.
Thank you.

Hi,
Sending the reports is a silent thing and it may in fact be several Updates before anything makes it way to an update.
I would check two things first.
1) Open the Font Book from the Applications folder.
Top left set it to All Fonts if it is not already
Then use the Edit Menu > Look for Enabled Duplicates.
Follow this by checking the Helvetica and Lucida Grande are active (Some App will not launch if Helvetica is Off and Lucida Grande is used to display Buddy lists when they have groups active  - you need the font before you open the app).
2) Open the Contacts App.
Use the Card Menu > Go to My Card
This should be your Card and show your details.
It should be marked with the Head and Shoulders icon.
If it is neither of these can you post the Log you are sending to Apple ?
If it is a Crash Log it may pay too be selective about how much you post.
We need to see the OS version number info at the top and the app info under that.
The info about the fault and the thread that crashed and those threads will help.
The Binary Images bit can be very long.
Limit this to the first 10 lines or so.
Messages and the Address Book  should be listed near the top as involved items that have just been used by the app's processes.

  • How do I send my pages attachment so that it will open for those with Microsoft word?

How do I send my pages attachment so that it will open for those with Microsoft Word?

    Hi Victoria,
Pages does not run on Windows.
Word cannot open a Pages file.
If you want someone without pages to be able to open your attachment, you will have to send it in a format openable on the recipient's computer.
If the recipient needs only to read the document, the most universal format is pdf. To send a pdf copy of your file, press command-P to open the Print dialogue, then click the PDF button and choose email PDF. This will open a new message in your default email client and attach the pdf file to that message.
If the recipient needs to be able to edit/change your document, and has MS Word, then either Save a copy as a Word file or go File > Export and choose Word as the file format for the export.
Be aware that MS Word does not support all features of Pages (and vice versa), and that formatting of the document may be affected by font substitution if you use fonts that are not available on the recipient's machine.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • File Filter with wait cursor/progress meter

    Hi all:
In my application I'm doing some file filtering that not only looks at file extention, but also parses the file for information. As a result this can take quite a while if there are a lot of files to filter. Does anyone know if it's possible to change to a wait cursor during the filtering process? Or better yet, attach a progress meter to the filtering process?

Correct, but Why, thank you, really ;-)
well, pass along a reference of the calling object to
the thread and have it provide a setBusy() and
setReady() method - that's what I did. I'd have the
    FileFiltering thread provide a method
getCompletionRate() or sg like that and so the caller
can handle the progress meter. This all happens from within Sun's BasicDirectoryModel. I can't seem to find anyway to touch the thread from outside of the BasicDirectoryModel, and I can't seem to find a way to change the BasicDirectoryModel to a custom model of my own (One that would in the simple case put a wait cursor at the beginning of the filter loop, and normal cursor at the end)

  • Safari will open a page with iBook G4 but not MacBook!

    Here's the address: http://tuner1.dc1.sonixtream.com/solon/media/tuner/SmallBrowserInfo.htm
Currently the page opens on a Windows CPU with IE, so the address is still valid. When I had an ibook G4 running the same OS and browser (Tiger and Safari) the page would open. But now that I have a MacBook it doesn't. A page opens saying "The page cannot be found". Could this have something to do with the move to Intel? I'm pretty sure that no adjustments have been done on account of the site itself. This is the only page I've noticed to do this.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Clicking on the link you provided sends me to "page not found". If I delete the address after .com, the next window says "Warning: this site is for authorized users only". I suggest contacting the site administrator or web developer. Perhaps you need an authorization link to set/activate the appropriate cookie in your browser.

  • Will opening a file with Sony Vegas make the SD card unreadable in FCP?

We record events on campus with a Panasonic AG-HMC40P. Our office uses Final Cut Pro to edit the files, however one of our staff used his copy of Sony Vegas to edit an event he recorded. Now the card is not readable through FCP. Did using another editing suite cause the problem?

Only if Sony Vegas "writes" to the card, which is a huge problem and shouldn't happen.

  • Will a new MotherBoard cure Blank Screen with blinking cursor?

Stuck with Blank Screen with blinking cursor; ESC key couldn’t bring up Startup Menu; OS is not loading
Product Name: HP G62 237 CA Notebook PC
    Short description of the problems:
--- Press ESC key couldn’t bring up Startup Menu when booting up
--- Blank screen with blinking cursor thereafter
--- Stuck here forever and OS is not loading
    DETAILED INFORMATION:
    Product Name and Operating System:

    O/S: Pre-loaded with Win 7 Home Prem
    Processor: Pent. Dual-Core CPU T4500 2.30GHz

    System BOARD ID: 1484
    Product #: WQ767UA#ABC
    Product Config ID: 049C110000202710000020000
    Problem History:
--- Used to have frequent BSOD (got fixed later because of faulty RAM that I suspected)
    --- Window couldn’t be loaded
--- Window Repair and HP Recovery were tried but not functioning
--- OEM Hard Drive was then removed & formatted few times by using other computer
--- Hard Drive was then tested by other computer; it can be installed Win XP & Win 7
--- So, Hard Drive was eliminated from the suspect list
--- Replaced with other good RAM from other computers & put back the OEM Hard Drive to my HP G62; everything worked fine, such as: able to reinstall Win 7; listening to music files; got Internet to download latest BIOS from HP support site; connected to my 42 inched TV as my monitor; and even smoothly updated the BIOS from v.17 to v.37!
--- Also, able to receive Window Updates from the Internet; and seemed that all problems were nicely solved
--- Once I believe my system got stabilized; I went back to test the 2 supposedly problematic RAM to see whether they were both faulty or not, then the whole thing has turned around! Completely screwed me up until this moment …
--- After put back the problematic RAM, Window couldn’t be loaded …
--- With a few error messages… such as,
    --- The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum;
--- After the next reboot… an unexpected screen message showed up:
Intel ® Cantiga PCI Accelerated SVGA BIOS

--- After that, OS was not loading …
--- Press ESC key couldn’t bring up the Startup Menu during boot up
--- Blank screen with blinking cursor thereafter and seems stuck here forever
    Procedures performed for troubleshooting:
Tried hard reset for more than 5 times (removed battery, AC adapter disconnected and then hold down the Power button for more than 60 secs) and tried reseating memory too; same result with Blank Screen with blinking cursor after each reboot.
Connected to an external monitor [Fn + F4/F5] to see whether there was any display, nothing has showed on the external monitor, it seemed that no connection established between the two.
Finally, took the long journey to follow the Service and Maintenance Guide of HP G62 to remove the CMOS battery for well over 15 minutes and put it back. But the result was again disappointed. Tried 4 times already. The latest error message is:
The CMOS checksum is invalid. The CMOS will be reset to the default configuration and will be rebooted. Please check your BIOS Setup options to see if they change.
    CMOS Reset (502)
    ENTER – Reboot the system
After this message, the same Blank Screen with blinking cursor came back. And pressing the ESC key couldn’t bring up Startup Menu when booting up …
Note: the fan is still running; the Power button is functioning but seems stuck here forever!
I’ve already carefully read this HP Support document titled “HP BIOS Application Selected is Corrupt or Missing”:
    http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01443485#N144
If really is the BIOS problems, then I will have the difficulties of updating a Window-based BIOS when I couldn’t even load Window!
(Note: Boot from USB has no point because right now I couldn’t change the boot sequence because the various “Startup Menu” options are not showing up!)
Secondly, I am still stuck with the Blank Screen with a blinking cursor after I passed the first screen of “Press the ESC key for Startup Menu” when re-booted again!
Thirdly, I have formatted my Hard Drive more than 3 times during the last few days for testing; I don’t have the OEM pre-loaded Win 7 with me anyone … and I don’t think I have the UEFI installed previously on my system. I did try hold down the Win Key + B with the most updated BIOS in the attached USB …, it came back with the same blank screen with a cursor blinking after reboot.
Note: the Blank Screen I’m experiencing right now is not completely black, in fact, there is background light from behind the screen and on each reboot, I can see the HP logo and the left corner message of: “Press ESC key for Startup Menu” … So, I suppose that my computer screen is not physically broken at least.
    Requests:
Please explain to me that what are the problem areas and the root causes if is possible?
What steps or other tests can be done to make it work again?
Do you think replacing the entire MotherBoard can cure the Blank Screen with blinking cursor?
[Warranty: expired! I am the original purchaser & the end-user of this HP G62; acquired 2 years ago directly from a trustworthy source: staples (in Canada). Would HP Support still willing to service it for an extra charge?]
Thanks in advance for any suggestion and idea!

  • How can I prevent Messages from opening?

    Hello,
I was a user of the Messages beta on Lion, and while it had its flaws, I was mostly happy with how it operated.  While it sometimes failed, it never bothered me unnecessarily.
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, though, I find that Messages will open every time I receive a new message from my wife.  I am not leaving the program open -- I quit after I send a message, and don't have an IM account set-up.  I only ever use it to send a message, then quit.
This is annoying because Messages sometimes hangs when I open my laptop up, trying to catch-up and collect a conversation that occured on, say, my phone.
I'd like to keep the app on my computer, but would like to keep it closed unless I prompt it to open.  I assumed there would be a preferences option for this, but if there is, I cannot find it.
Any thoughts on what I can do to prevent this behavior in the future?
    Best,
    John

Yes, I'm surprised too.  Makes me worry that this is either (a) really simple and we're overlooking it or (b) not yet possible to correct in new OS.
Anyone out there want to put our minds at ease?

  • Cannot open project file with write access...

I have seen that this problem has been reported before but have yet to find a solution.
I have my project file in an external hard drive.  When I plug the hard drive to another computer and want to save it I get this message:
"Cannot open project file with write access.  The file may be locked or you don't have permission to write to this location.  Select Save As..."
I don't want to Save As because other projects make reference to this file and also my Encore file will be messed up.
FYI both computers use Windows 7.
    Any solutions?

Right click on the folder in Question and select properties. Then select the security tab. Make sure you add everyone to the user list. You do that by selecting edit and then add. Type in everyone in the object section and hit ok. Then select the everyone user and checkmark the Full control. Hit Apply and it will adjust the permissions for the folder and subfolders and files.

  • Nothing appears on my screen after I log on, I know I need to delete files but how do I go about it if I can't click on anything bc there is nothing there :(

After loging in my screen is blank. Even the apps that automatically open don't open. nothing appear. I know i have a full memory but I can't delete anything help.

You have voiceover on. First try tapping the home button three times fast to turn it off.
If it is still on the gestures are different. You tap once to choose an item then double tap the item to activate it. Remember everything that was one tap is now tap then double tap. Start with the lock screen. Tap, then double tap your code. Swipe with two fingers to open, if the screen doesn't slide with two fingers try using three.
Tap then double tap each of the following. Settings> general> accessibility> voiceover > off.
    Good luck.
Edit. I'm not sure if you need two fingers to slide to unlock. Try with one finger. If that doesn't work try two.

The upgraded is only necessary for libraries created with iPhoto '07 or eearlier.  Just double click the library to open it in iPhoto, and let it upgrade, if it has been created by a newr version.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • For some reason with pages program the cursor will no longer appear when I bring up a blank document, so I cannot start any typing.  Anyone else have this problem?

With my ipages program for some reason now when I open a blank document no cursor appears so that I can start typing.  anyone else have this issu?

I gather you have Pages '09? Even though you haven't said so. You definitely don't have "ipages".
It sounds like you have opened a blank Layout template, which has nothing on the blank page for you to type into.
Either insert a Textbox or Shape, or create a new document using a Word Processing template, they are listed in the Sidebar.
