Messages (Yosemite) not receiving pictures

After upgrading to Yosemite, I lost the ability to see pictures previously sent by me (from either MacBook Pro or iPhone), or pictures sent to me. This applies to both general non-imessage texts and imessages alike. Instead of images or movies, something like, "IMG_1846" will shown, or video window unable to play a movie. I can still send pictures and video from my mac, and as long as I keep the Messages turned on it will be viewable. However, if I open Messages at a later time these videos and pictures will be no longer viewable and will displayed instead as "IMG_xxxx" or the broken video frame I described.
Upon clicking "details" at the top right of the Messages app, instead of a gallery of pictures and videos I see the generic photo previews that show a page and the file format written on that page (the same as if you download something partial, and it is unreadable but still has the formatting suffix).
I can still view everything perfectly on my iPhone, and have experienced no problems on that side of things.
I have tried simply logging out and logging in again, but that's done nothing. It should be noted that I did join in the beta test for Yosemite, but I don't remember having problems with this until the official release was made. Messages also worked perfectly on Mavericks for me.

Hi,
I would run through some fairly standard maintenance as the first steps.
First of all Open the Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities and set it to the First Aid tab.
Select the Hard Drive and then Repair Permissions.
This uses a database on the Mac  which itself is updated when you update app or the OS.
When you have done this Restart the computer  (which in itself can be helpful)
Next restart the Computer holding down the CMD+ALT+P+R keys until you hear three Start Up "Bongs" then allow it to finish the restart.
This is the PRAM/NVRAM reset.
It clears some caches you can't get at by other means.
Next try a Safe Boot OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
If it works there then restart normally to end the Safe Boot.

  • IMessage on mac does not receive pictures

My iMessage on my mac book pro (Os X 10.9.2) does not receive pictures sent to me. It will receive screen shots, but not actual pictures taken by the phone or image files saved to the phone. I have tried the PRAM restart with no luck. Ideas??

    Hi,
    Odd stuff first.
In the Contacts App > Card menu > Show My Card - is this your Info ?
Can you compare the Names that do show in Messages with those that do not in the Contacts App ?
For instance do the ones using Country Codes as part of the telephone Number Show up but ones that only use the local number (no Country code) do not ?
If this s the case check the System Preferences > Date and Time including the Time Zone as everything is time stamped.
Next go to the Messages app > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages Account > Details Button (you will be asked to sign in again).
Does this list the "right" Country or region (it is this that will add the county code to plain numbers and allow your Apple ID (or others) to work properly.
In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab does it list DNS servers that are not on your LAN ?
Quite often it lists the router (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x and occasionally 172.16.x.x through to 172.32.255.255) rather than external DNS servers.
It "should" show the ones the router lists in a greyed out form.
If not, copy the DNS servers across (from the router) or use Public ones.
If that does not  work use th Finder > Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key and select the Library that appears.
    Navigate to Preferences.
Find com.apple.iMessages.bag.plist and drag it to the Trash then Restart Messages.
This will force the app to reconnect to the iMessages Servers (and as there is a group of them you may well end up with a new server)

  • Instant messages are not received

Instant messages can't be received to contacts that are online. The status for these contacts is changing until the message is not received (offline-online although the contact is always online). When the contact writes your smth, the message is delivered. It happens on the latest skype version and on the beta version too. I also tried to remove the skype and clean up the register and install the beta version only after that.

Lync is aware of active conversations. This is how it works:
You are signed in to three different endpoints (let's say A,B & C)
someone sends you an IM, you'll get a notification on each endpoint
You decide to answer on endpoint B
Each consecutive IM between those 2 endpoints will only be send to endpoint B.
Only when someone in the conversation closes the IM (or it timed out) and the other party sends a new IM, a new popup toast is shown on all devices.
In point 4 it's very normal that Lync only sends to endpoint B since it know's you're active there. I would consider it annoying if a conversation I already had is also opened on a different endpoint. You would close it anyway....  If you want to continue
the conversation, you go to Outlook conversation history (in your Exchange mailbox) and continue the conversation from there so the other party gets contextual information.
Once the conversation is closed or timed out (point 5), Lync is not sure on which device you are so it send a new toast to every signed in endpoint. It could be that you changed PC or switched to mobile in between.
That's how it works and this behavior cannot be changed. I actually think it works fantastic.

My Lync 2013 deployment doesn't work like that. If I'm signed in on three devices (my work PC, my phone, and my home PC), I never know which of the 3 a new IM will come in on. It seems to randomly choose it.

  • IPad not receiving pictures

My iPad is not receiving pictures it shows the blue iMessage bubble with a question mark. Help!

Try turning off iMessage, Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for phone to restart (no data will be lost).
Wait a few minutes after the phone restarts and turn iMessage back on.

  • Windows users do not receive pictures sent with Aperture via Mail

Sometimes my buddies windows users reply to my e-mail saying that they have not received the attached picture(s).
It looks like their anti-virus software is cutting them off.
This happens when I send the picture directly from Aperture using Mail.
I've tried several times and I ended up exporting the pictures on the desktop and attaching them to the message.
    Like this it works.
In the e-mail export preset I use Email small-JPEG.
Is there anything else I should do ?
    Thanks
    Dual 2 Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

I can verify that this does seem to be an Aperture problem; I have run a number of tests. If I "output" to eMail from Aperture there are two known problems: The progress of the send is not shown in the Mail window, as it should be, to let you know, visually, when something is in transit and when it gets to the other end it is treated as "malformed" by my colleagues' P.C.s. If I export the image to the desktop and drag and drop it in exactly the same configuration it arrives without a problem.

  • Mail 2.1.3 with Comcast ISP - delayed email messages AND not receiving them

Having recent issues with Mail 2.1.3 and Comcast as my ISP. I was not receiving messages and receiving others delayed. Sending is fine, unless I get "timed out", where I have to input all of my Comcast account passwords one at a time. I've talked to Comcast and my bank (the issue is that I'm not receiving all of my bill notifications from the bank via e-mail). The bank said they sent the email. Comcast said there aren't any problems on my account, and their webmail (via a browser) shows I received the email, but it never showed up in Mail - where I check for it. (Comcast's webmail via the browser doesn't work well, because I can only view one account at a time. With Mail, I can view all email accounts at the same time.) I've tried restarting the Airport Base Station, the Comcast modem, and the iBook. So, any ideas for a fix, or is it finally time to cave in and buy a newer computer? Thanks for the help!

    Hi Carron,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it try these & reboot...

  • Some incoming messages are not received in outlook

    Using Iphone 4.
Most of the time I receive messages from a POP account on the IPhone and on my Outlook2010 client. Once in a while I receive one or more on the IPhone and they never show up in Outlook.
This is DNSExist Squirrel mail server. The messages are not removed from the server account after they are received by the iPhone. Outlook is setup to remove the messages 1 day after they are received and appears to be doing so.
These messages come from different senders.
The Settings.Mail.Account.Advanced.DeleteFromServer setting is set to "Never".
Some of the messages appear to be flagged as received by IPhone in a way that make Outlook treat them like they have already been received.
I will post on DNSExist also

I believe that the messages sill show up eventually.
While I've no experience using Outlook with POP3, I have experience with Outlook 2011 on Mac and 2010 on Windows with Microsoft Exchange. Both OS X and Windows Outlook appear to have a bug whereby they defer display of new messages for a seemingly random amount of time (even if you tell it to "Send/Receive Messages" by clicking on the item in the ribbon or from the menu). The messages are on the server, and, if you monitor the messages in the activity bar at the bottom of the Outlook window, it seems to see the messages and transfer them, but they simply don't show up in the application.
Some messages appear immediately, others don't. We've not been able to determine precisely what differentiates those that do and those that don't. Some messages don't appear in Outlook for hours after they post on the server.
This is widely observed throughout the company, and home users report similar behavior (again, I can't tell if they are using POP3 or not).
We've reported the bug to Microsoft.
Your iPhone is doing the right thing. I know of no current fix or work-around for the bug in Microsoft Outlook.

  • Switched to Android but iPhone text messages are not received

PLEASE HELP! I sold my 3GS on 3 network and switched to a Galaxy S3 on Orange. I have ported my number across. Before I sold my iphone I did a factory restore. My problem is that when iphone users send me a text message, I do not receive it. Their phones still think I am on iMessage. I need to know how to disable my iMessage account even though I have no access to an iphone. I have removed the device from my apple support profile and also from icloud.com. I have absolutely no idea how to solve this and I'm pretty disappointed with Apple that by doing a factory reset, didn't remove my number from the imessage account. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    benhill00,
Please look over Apple's Mail Setup, Troubleshooting etc.. link. I suspect a setting has just gotten "confused" or become corrupt somehow. Frequently all you need to do is go into the Mail's Account settings and re-input the settings.

  • Not receiving picture messages

    Hello,
Sorry if its a stupid question but after reading a few other topics online I've become quite confused. What happened is, I sent my girlfriend pictures to her @vtext.com address and she said she didn't receive them. Did they go to her online picture portfolio or something? Or did it just not send at all because @vtext is only for text messages?  Is she still able to get them even if they were sent to her @vtext.com ?

The [email protected] is only for text messages. There is a different address for picture messages. I don't recall myself what that address is, but I do know that it was posted on this community before.
