Messaging Server 5.0 setup program detects a previous server instance and fails, even though earlier versions were uninstalled

During the installation of Messaging Server 5.0, the setup program displays
a message stating that a previous Messaging Server instance has been detected.
The program then prompts me to upgrade the existing server instance or create
a new server instance.

If I choose the option "Create New," the setup program will create the
following directory:

msg-server-name-1

Because I don't want this directory to be created, I choose the other option,
"Upgrade." However, with this option, the setup program eventually displays
the following error message:

A serious problem occurred while installing the iPlanet Messaging Server
Messaging Configuration and Services. It reported the following problem:
The application command /usr/iplanet/server5/msg-alien-1/start-msg
could not be run.
Due to a serious problem the iPlanet Messaging Server installer is unable
to continue. Please examine the log file
/usr/iplanet/server5/setup/msg/iplanet-msg-install.log for more
information.
Checking the log file reveals the following entries:

NOTICE: Running Init Config.
NOTICE: Creating messaging file attributes.
NOTICE: Running Removing old sessions database.
NOTICE: Starting Messaging Configuration and Services.
ERROR:
TYPE: Application
LOCATION: UApplicationTools::RunApplicationUNIX
DETAILS: The application command
/usr/iplanet/server5/msg-alien-1/start-msg could not be run.
Is there a way to work around this problem with the setup program detecting
a previous installation?
Use the following steps to correct this problem:

I have followed the steps as stated in this article. But still, Messaging cannot be installed.Is there a "CLEAN" way to completely un-install iPlanet Messaging server?

I have changed the hostname in all the file (1) hostname ,(2)/etc/sysconfig/network file . i even checked my hostname and it shows hostname as "HOST1" so i am confused even though hostname is "HOST1" but in dev_ms the IP ADRESS is resolving to "host1.mycompanyname.com"
3. Also when i am trying to run "startsap" or "stopsap" from host1 where central service instance is installed. It gives me "command not found" although i see all the exe file in /usr/sap/SID/SYS/exe/run. why my command not running.
. I have added the sapmsSID 3900/tcp entries in both HOST1 and HOST3 services file.

Determining Message Server Host and Port information

Hi,
I am working on the NWDS creating a Java WD application and I was told which Netweaver system I should work on but I was not told the Message Server Host information neither the Port information. I ran transaction SM51 (right click->details)in the Netweaver system but the information it is not working. Even though I can telnet this server port if I go to the J2EE Engine window within the NWDS I do not see the green light. I just see "N/A". I also tried to deploy my application but I keep getting this message: "Cannot determine sdm host (is empty). Please configure your engine/sdm correctly".

in order to see Message Server Host information and Port information go to SAP J2EE Engine start page: e.g. http://system-name:57100/index.html (use administrator pws).
Then click on System Information, here on the top you can read the Message Server Host and Port.

"Success". There are no entries in the log to help explain what has happened.

Any failure to start Messaging Server via Administration should be analyzed by
starting the server with /etc/NscpMail.

The original exception was: wapsmod.ms.MsAttachFailed: Connect to message server (pdirmba1/3900) failed: MSENILAYER.

When trying to install an extra dialog instance to our BW environment in the second step when giving the profile parameter after reading the profiles it comes with the message:
An exception occurred while connecting to the message server instance MBA/DVEBMGS00 on host pdirmba1, port 3900. DIAGNOSIS: The original exception was: wapsmod.ms.MsAttachFailed: Connect to message server (pdirmba1/3900) failed: MSENILAYER.. SOLUTION: Make sure that the message server is started.
Message server is started as CI and second DI are already running.
HP-UX, Oralce11.
Did set the temp directory and SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME parameter into the environment of root.

Second Messaging Server instance

Hi,
I would like to install a second messaging server instance in exactly the same path of my first messaging server instance. Would they interfere each other in any way? For example, certain files got overwritten or something like that? Would they work together?

I am using Messaging Server 5.2.
I tried installing the second instance into the SAME path that my first instance resides in. I found the following behaviour:
-Whichever instance that is started first, it will work perfectly fine.
-The instance that is started last would have problem dequeing messages from any of the channel (tcp_local, ims-ms, etc)
-I found that the "job_controller" process of the instance that is started last keep "disappearing" somehow. Although I start it back by "imsimta start job_controller", it "disappears" again somehow once I tried to send a mail through this instance.
Does that mean we CAN'T install the two instances into the SAME path?
Or, is there any configuration changes to be made in order to have these two instances running perfectly fine in the SAME path?

Also, when I do a disk permission repair, it always repairs the same applications and files. Last night, I did a disk permission repair twice and both times it took a long time and did the exact same repair both times.

Disk Utility won't repair your home folder. Sounds like your home folder permissions are messed up tho. Try repairing them this way by using Lion Recovery.
1. Restart Lion, and before you hear the chime, hold down the Command and R keys.
2. You’ll be at the Repair Utilities screen. Click the Utilities item in the Menu Bar, then click Terminal.
3. In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
4. The password reset utility window launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the dropdown below it, select the user account where you’re having issues.
5. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes just a couple of minutes. When it’s done, exit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac.

I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to do.
Once you install commcli, you should be able to use the command-line tools. They work, but you have to have been consistant in giving answers to all the questions asked.
You also may not share the amadmin password with any other password. It must be unique.
There is no need to compile anything to get Messaging Server to work, or to provision it with commcli.

Messaging Server: mail and mailalternativeaddress attributes must be unique

Email addresses for a given User Directory must have unique mail
and mailalternativeaddress
attributes.

Messaging Server uses the following two attributes to search for email
addresses in the User Directory:

Each email address in the User Directory must have unique entries for these
two attributes. If a given email address appears twice in the User Directory,
the Messaging Server will display an error message and will not deliver the
email to either address. In the case where a user wants email that is
addressed to one email address to go to other email addresses as well (e.g., if
a user has multiple accounts), you would need to create a group for that user
and add the other email addresses to the group.

Additional Notes:

<LI>Administration Server 3.x and 4.x have various mechanisms for
reducing the likelihood of user error when creating email accounts.

<LI>Administrators of Directory Server 4.x servers should also be aware that
the mail and
mailalternativeaddress

The uid uniqueness plugin maintains uniqueness within attributes, but not across attributes.

What does “I overwrote the information in Accounts” mean? What exactly did you do? More info, please.
Deleting a mail account (which i not the same as overwritting the account information) causes all your mail stored in that account’s mailboxes to be removed from the computer as well, and you you were warned that this would happen by an alert similar to this for Mail 2.x (I don’t know what the exact wording is in Mac OS X 10.3):

Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.For IMAP-type accounts, this is not a problem because mail is stored on the server. If you deleted a POP account, however, your mail has certainly been wiped out from the computer, not just moved somewhere.
To prevent that from happening, you should have moved your mail to custom “On My Mac” mailboxes instead of leaving it in the account’s mailboxes. Actually, using the account’s Inbox and Sent mailboxes for archiving purposes is a bad idea regardless — see Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty.
If the POP account was configured to leave the messages on the server for some time, setting up the account again would cause any messages still on the server to be downloaded again, just like for IMAP accounts, but this would only work for received mail that has not yet been removed from the server.
If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup (which you should have made before doing something like that), you may try to salvage as many deleted mbox files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 2.x). Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

Instance Number : - just check the logon pad.. select your Ecc or R/3 system and click on chane item.... Usally it is 00.
Message server port : it is 3600 + instance no.
3600 + 00 = 3600

Message server ip is nothing but your server IP if it is stand alone and port is 3600.
if you want to check the info got to tcode SMMS>GOTO tab select PARAMETERS>display.it will show the info.
