Messed up desktop

OK, new MBP 15" - hooked up to external ViewSonic VX2235wm monitor via DVI.
Had Safari window open on the external monitor.
Was doing a copy of files from USB Flash drive to the HD.  All worked OK, but @ the end, the desktop got messed up.  Though the files were copied OK, the desktop scren was messed up with the images of the files being moved.  Picture attached showing the issue.  This messed up desktop was on the "internal" display of the MBP - external display was OK.

Command-J whilst the desktop is showing.
Pref's are there.

  • Messed Java Desktop Release 3

for some reason I can only get into CDE on my Solaris 10 x86 last update.
when I log into the JAva Desktop.. it just hangs without any error msg of any kind.
What I've done that might be due to:
    1. trying to set up IPFilter (think it should be working OK now)
2.to change my hostname from the unknown
    3. via smc (Solaris Management Console) played with assigning users rights/groups , as I hated it too much when I need to install something to log as root then finding out I have to re-install it for the regular user from his account... like the StarOffice-I've installed it as root, but as a regular used it still wants me to install it..
So what I've done - it seems that I have the same desktop in JD when I log in with a reg. user.. but now it JD does not start..
Oh,I've edited also /etc/passwd for the shells assigned /bin/bash and addded Super-User to my regular user..
At last I'm not 100% sure that no.3 is the problem as I'm not 100% whether I did restart after doing number 3. Basically I'm not sure if I did the reboot prior to no.1,2 or after I 've done all the 3 things....
So how can I get the JD working again?
    Any Ideas?
    Many Thanks in Advence!

Ok, I don't know which logs to look at.. tried in /var/log.. everythings seems to be OK,no errors , just one warnning which I'm 101% is irrelevant- in xorgl log about something keyboard related.
Now I've tried to log in again into JD and hit Alt+Ctrl+Del to see :
    stdprocess
    no such file.......
I've tried to start this from console-voila it's a process manager/monitor.. it works..
Any ideas what is messed up?
    Anyone?
    Many Thanks!

  • How to stop this wretched programme messing my desktop

I followed the instructions to what I thought was to upgrade
adobe reader. In addition, I also got this Acrobat.Com thing. I
didn't ask for it. I'm sure its a fine programme...BUT the folder
always opens up onto my desktop when I start the computer, thus
wrecking my carefully constructed artistic masterpiece of a
desktop, which you might find amusing but is important to me...
I've now spent a long time trying to get some sort of support to
get it fixed... another hour was spent trying to log on to this
forum. I was forced to surrender my postal address, which I really
don't want to do. It would be appreciated if you would remove this
from your records. The nickname "fed up" was already taken, "very
fed up" also taken (ADOBE..NOTE THIS). My OS is Windows XP. PLEASE
tell me how this problem can be fixed... and please don't fob me
off like I notice you have already done to others who have used
this forum to complain about this problem.

    Hello,
I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the
    Acrobat.com Air application.
If you don't want to use it, you can simply get rid of it by
going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Software and uninstalling
the Acrobat.com entry. This will neither remove Reader 9 nor will
it prevent you from using Acrobat.com through your web browser.
As for your personal information, you do, of course, have the
right to have that removed. Have a look at our private policy
through the link at the bottom. As stated there, you can simply
mail [email protected] and ask for your personal data to be
    removed.
This will, however, also delete your forum account, meaning
you won't be able to post in the forums any more.
I hope this answers your questions.
    Kind regards,
    Phil

  • Desktop Folders - how can I customize like before in 10.4?

I apologized if this has been asked already but I have searched high and low here.
Probably a simple question (setting somewhere) but I'm stumped! How can I "turn off" the alphabetical ordering of the files on my desktop; even more so, how can I just drag the files around and put things where I want.
    Thanks in advance all,

View > Show View Options. It's most likely set to Sort by: Name. You can chose sort by none, which will allow you to mess your Desktop up to your heart's desire

  • Custom OS X Lion Wallpaper not rendering correctly

Upgraded to Lion on Wednesday July 20th (Final Release)
I have tried rebooting to correct the serious rendering issue that my iMac 27" (Late 2009) had with this custom wallpaper after upgrading to lion yesterday. Before upgrading snow leopard had no issue with this desktop wallpaper. After I changed back to the standard milkyway image that lion comes with only the first space in mission control shows the change the other 8 desktop spaces still show the seriould messed up desktop. Clearly this is a bug in the lion final release but I do not want to register as a developer to submit a bug report.
The original image should look like this

    just as an aside,... {but not sure it helps}
    I just viewed your image above, then 'Right-Clicked' to get Contextual Menu and selected "Use Image as Desktop Picture', & it did so, instantly & beautifully... {Lion}
    just on the one Desktop though, but I think you can change that in Settings anyway {different Backgrounds for each Desktop}

  • Changing enabled background images based on jpeg EXIF data.

    Hello,
I have a huge mess of desktop backgrounds in a folder that I have been sorting through with exif keywords. I currently have it set up to cycle through every image, but it would be nice to enable or disable images in the slideshow based on their keywords.
Is there a way to do this with a batch file?
    Thanks!

  • How It Was Fixed (Possible Software Bug Not Hardware): Getting the iMac Screen/Menus Garbled and/or Yellow Circle Before Getting Into Finder Issues?

Hi. Possible fix done to my late- 2009 iMac's screen/graphics issue that may work God willing, hopefully for most [In my case it sometimes had that yellow circle that appears before it goes to the Finder but mostly it was a messed up desktop and menus (unreadable mostly) after months, prayers and weeks of fixing it; recommended to be read entirely first coz' it's a bit complicated (like a lot of subplots). If uncomfortable to try coz' it involved a GPU stress test, contact your authorized Apple service center for their advice]. I had an iMac (late 2009) screen garbling a few hours ago (was weeks ago when it resurfaced until it got worse that it's at every boot on Mavericks):
†        I booted to Snow Leopard USB external (my back-up OS) drive then run the first    person shooter at redeclipse.net. I set everything to max, including the display, resolution and graphics setting with fullscreen and v-sync on. I then refreshed it which brought it back to normal (I then tested it's stability with GPUTest 0.7 with Furmark for 15 minutes). * if the display options have been set to max before, bring it back to the default then refresh and then max it again Possibly any games that's has the graphic settings (or more advanced) of Red Eclipse could work (other free ones are Xonotic and Open Arena which are based on Quake 1 or 3s engine I believe).
Optional but not recommended (have warrantied if that's still available or have it repaired at authorized service centers):
If that doesn't work, review articles and videos on how to open an Intel iMac and get an iPhone/iPad/another way to get to the 'net ready for research (I opened mine very carefully on the right side with a cutter with blade extended far prying it carefully then I inserted a flat end, sturdy plastic used for mixing epoxy then removed the cutter carefully to let the plastic mixing tool do the prying) to see if the cable connected to the logicboard which is on top of, is connected (mine was detached but I'm not sure if the adjusting and tilting of the screen overtime for 2 & 1/2 years, detached it) then do † above again.
It could to be a software problem, a possible Apple ATI driver bug that takes overtime to surface (2 1/2 years it resurfaced because this started in my case after upgrading to Lion when Apple coded things mostly from the ground up. Snow Leopard didn't have this problem).
Thank you for your time. Have a great upcoming sunday mass/great upcoming weekend. I hope this helps.
God bless, Rev. 21:4, Matt. 16:18

Does an external display also act in a similar manner as the internal one?
Some earlier Intel-based iMacs had graphic processor card issues; not sure what
the symptoms of the majority of them were, but some had odd patterns, others
went black, and some would range from OK to totally unusable. Among others.
So there is a chance the graphic processor may be going out; or just the circuitry
that controls the backlight. An inverter may be weak or other circuit to the display
    could be wearing out.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If you have access to an Apple Store with Genius bar, they can perform some kinds
of diagnostic tests there even though the computer is out-of-warranty; that may be
of help to narrow down the cause of the symptoms you've noticed. They may not be
able to repair it, however, at an Apple Store; as it is rather old by today's standard.
An Apple Authorized Service Provider could do repairs and testing on older models
the Apple Store's Genius and other may not be set up to handle due to vintage.
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
There is a country locator page to help find either of the above in regions outside
of the US & Canada, not sure how the above links would work; and it appears my
bookmarks to the country locator page may not be accessible now to post here.
You may be able to get an idea about what kinds of parts support the display
function by name by looking into an iFixit.com repair guide for your iMac series.
Hopefully the parts supporting the display are the reason it is dimming down, as
a graphic processor failure likely would exhibit other behaviors than just dimming.
PS: I see you've added content to your thread after I'd started working on this
& the answer likely is a hardware repair; professional testing is worth the time
and you seem to have at least one other thread on the same topic....
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Nervous about shutting down again tonight! help?

the last 2 times I've shut down tonight, upon restart all my settings have been erased. (keychains messed up, desktop picture gone, etc...) Any thoughts on what i may try before shutting down again???
    thanks!
    MC

Even with a dead PRAM battery, this shouldn't be happening if the computer stayed connected to an active electrical outlet.
It sounds like you are shutting off the computer and then removing all power to it. If you are cutting power at a power center, power strip, or battery backup unit, your new PRAM battery is not gong to last very long. When the computer if off but still getting current to the power supply, the PS allows a trickle of current to bypass the switch to maintain contents of PRAM where your settings are stored. With the battery dead and the power cut off, you get the symptoms you have described.
I learned this the hard way, by cutting all power to a Mac at work by shutting down the battery backup unit after shutting down the Mac. The battery was dead in a few months, and I was fighting preference setting problems like you are now.
Leave it plugged in. "Going green" by pulling the power every night is not an appropriate action for this computer model.
EDIT: As you are in the US, you'll find the PRAM batteries cheapest when you order online. This place:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
is where I get mine. Radio Shack carries the same battery as part number 23-026 but it is easily 3 to 4 times as much there.

  • Laptop with external monitor

Not Premiere or video related ...
Does anyone know how to to solve the issue that I have when I connect an external PC Monitor to a laptop...it changes the screen resolution on my laptop (and messes up my desktop).
Connection is 15 pin to 15 pin (RGB?) connectors.
As soon as the connection is made to the external monitor..the laptop adjusts it self and gets horizontally stretched and of a lower screen rez.
On disconnection, it reverts ( often leaving a messed up desktop)
    A setting some where????

If you right click on the desktop, that is what you get?
    Correct.
    Options
    Extend these Displays
    Show Desktop only on One
    Show desktop Only on Two
I have managed to force Laptop display on to Two.
Works (kind of)  but I am now convinced that one needs monitors to both have the abilty to display identical resolutions.
BTW - my post # 9...bad idea!  Seems both Intel and the Nvidia drivers (devices)  are required to be enabled.
Strange because I have often seen Jim advise others to kill the onboard Graphics.

  • [SOLVED] Can't restore Gnome default settings

    Hi,
I just wanted to try out the new Gnome 2.20, however when I try to start it up, I get a very very very messed up Desktop. I can't do almost anything. No icons (well, only stupid generic file icons for everything), no menus, can't open files. I have tried to remove all the gnome related and gnome apps related hidden folders in my home directory (I also ended up deleting my whole .config folder, just to be sure), but for the love of me, it doesn't affect my current *configuration*. I have never had such an odd problem, I'm posting a screenshot.
Could anybody give me any hint since I am quite confused?
    Thanks a lot!

I just found out, reading this thread, that I need to reinstall libx11, but I have libx11-xcb installed, for some reason, which conflicts with it. If I try to uninstall it, it obviously brings down quite a few apps... But the main thing is that uninstalling libx11-xcb hangs:
    $ sudo pacman -Rcs libx11-xcb
    checking dependencies...
error: could not find xfce-utils in database -- skipping
error: could not find xfce-utils in database -- skipping

  • Another G5 problem

I have the last rev iSight g5 17" bought in December 2005 and no applecare (X_X).
From my posts on Mac Rumors and Mac Forums:
Okay, so two weeks ago I come in and my iMac is acting weird (iSight G5, rev c. 17" with standard RAM because Crucial hasn't arrived yet). By weird I mean the fonts are skewed, I cannot open programs and if they do open they all go white. Finder is messed up and won't load certain folders. I cannot open Preferences either. So, I reboot a few times and it still does this and when I would get to the login screen it would be all scrambled but I could login by typing my password and it would go back to the messed up desktop. I reinstall OS X (Tiger) and then update. Now, two weeks later I keep getting the White/Grey Screen of Death (You must Reboot your computeR) every so often (every two days) and the computer crashes a lot. Tonight I get back upstairs after about three point five hours of making bread and watching television and the screen is black and will not respond and the fans are running non-stop!
So, I re-boot and I would like to know *** is the problem? Do I need to get a new iMac or something? I was not even running anything when I left it but Firefox with four tabs and Zudeo (Azureus) with two torrents. This started happening (White/grey screen) a month after I first bought it (Jan 06'). Silly me, it was a gift and I could not afford AppleCare at the time so I never got it. X_X
What can I do? I bought this computer in December 05' and now it decides to mess up. Will the ram help? Is this a Kernel problem?
Good news is I'm waiting on my MB to ship out, but with the iMac problems I'm considering returning it and just going back to PC (ugh) and finding something to do with this iMac...
    Any ideas?

I don't beleive the extra ram will help out your current issues.
If it were my machine, I would first try resetting the SMC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 - read and follow instructions. I would also follow the link to resetting the PRAM: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
How full is your Hard Drive? You need to have at LEAST 10% free so your machine can operate properly. The Fan is a (one) sign the Mac cannot find the operating system...

  • Non-Admin User Account Desktop is all messed up..graphically...HELP!

This issue is difficult to explain, but here it goes...
I have 2 users (desktops) setup on Lion.  My primarydesktop is the Admin account and my wife has her own (for her iTunes, mail, etc.).  Until just recently, I could switch between users easilyand stuff worked properly.  However, lately I switch to my wife's useraccount and everything is jacked up.  The icons and dock are both big& blocky and whenever I click on an icon it disfigures thewallpaper.  Also, the wallpaper image is also messed up.
Itjust started doing this so not sure what happened or what I can do tofix it.  Is it possible to nuke her desktop/user acct and start freshwithout messing up mine?  Or do I have to do the entire machine andrestore from Time Machine?
    Totally perplexed by this one.
    Thanks!
    Bryan

There is only one solution: create a new Standard user account and set it as your auto login account, if you use that feature.
Using what you describe is mostly a false sense of security. Were someone to hack into the computer they could hack into the standard account, so you would not wish to keep any sensitive data in that account. Other things to consider:
Turn on your Firewall in Security & Privacy preference panel.
Use software to mask your online presence such as ProxyCap 2.03, MacProxy, Proxifier, or Hotspot Shield.
