Messed up HD I think

Today my computer just decided that the HD would make wierd clicking sounds. It froze up twice today (restarted once fine), would take 15 seconds to change programs, so I restarted it a second time and then sat on the start up screen forever. The log on box never appeared. Turned it off and back on, now the start up screen won't turn on. I think my hard drive is screwed. Could it be anything else? At least it isn't a big deal to replace a HD.
If I do replace the HD, which one do you suggest? I would buy from Newegg or a site like that.

I also think your PowerBook's hard drive has failed and it is time to start looking for a replacement. The only other thing I might contemplate doing with your existing drive is to run Data Rescue, if you need to try and recover any data.
As for a replacement drive... overall I think most of the drives available today are pretty good (perhaps with the exception of Toshiba drives). However my personal preferences are for Seagate and Hitachi.
Whilst I have nothing against the Western Digital that Matt has suggested, the fastest speed is 5400RPM - which was the reason why I did not consider one when I upgraded my own PB's drive. If you need a faster, 7200RPM, drive then you will have to consider another manufacturer. I currently have a 7200RPM 100GB Hitachi Travelstar in my PB and I'd say that the improvement in usability has been very significant. Not the cheapest drive around - but very fast.

Health step counter all messed up

Health still records my data points (although strangely--it has a data point for 6000+ steps this morning, which is wrong, as I just woke up, and it records all other data in tiny chunks, like 6 steps at a time), but it no longer shows a daily average or daily steps. It just has 0 for everything unless you go to the data screen.
It used to record my steps, still in the tiny increments, and display daily totals and averages and daily distances. After downloading iOS 8.0.1 and restoring to iOS 8.0.0 yesterday, it apparently no longer does the totals, and apparently is messed up if it thinks i walked 6447 steps this morning.
Any insight? I liked it keeping track of all my steps.

CS6 Encore launches but all options are greyed out

The headline says it all. I'm using CS6 on a MacBook Pro, OS 10.7. Previously Encore has worked well. After the most recent update, Encore will launch but all of the options are greyed out. I can't start a new project, etc. When I try to open a previous Encore project, I receive an error message that some needed software is missing. Any ideas to help me solve the problem? I suspect that same sort of issues that one gets when the activation is messed up. I think the resolution is deactivate and reactivate.
Are you missing any presets in Premiere? I would look at some of the issues in the Premiere forum to further diagnose the problem and look for the recommended fix.

HT1351 Is it possible to manage apps on a device from computer since iTunes was changed?

I am so lost since iTunes was redesigned! I like to manage my children's apps from the computer. We have multiple devices and I want different apps on each. I've lost this ability and I am floundering! We have too many apps to manage from individual devices. With my vision deficits, I find it easier to select and delete apps with the device connected and to move the apps to the page I want it on from a larger computer screen.
I used to be able to connect my device, sync it, and then go into a screen where I could manage the apps. No more! Why not? I get that the new design is all about the sale for Apple, but please don't take away functionality! Help!

After an hour of messing with this, I think I found my own answer.
The new iTunes automatically shrinks the left sidebar that has device information. It does not automatically tell us this. Control S returns the view to the familiar one.
For some reason,my device is not always appearing in the sidebar. This might be a problem with my USB port, again no idea why. I did see questions from other users experiencing the same problem. Once I did get the device to appear, I still did not have the ability to view the old screen that had a list of my loaded apps with a page by page view. The device info summary page was there, but the toolbar for the device was not visible.
I had to restore my iPod to its original settings and update before the old app screen and device toolbar returned.
I had been putting off the update because everytime I tried I got a message saying there were apps purchased on my iPod that needed to be uploaded or they would be lost with the update. I would agree to upload them but was never taken to a prompt to begin that process. Since I could not find a way to sync and the device specific settings were concealed I finally opted to update and lose the apps in order to solve the bigger problem. Hopefully, they are there somewhere.
Disappointed to see how many consumers are as lost as I am with the new iTunes appearance. Hope Apple is tracking these forum questions and thinking of us as clients and not just as wallets! Way too much emphasis on purchasing and not enough on user friendly accessibility in new iTunes. We're hooked, Apple. Try harder to keep us on the hook.

I am tired of the issues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sent the letter below to RIM and it auto bounced back to me with a multitiude of useless options to choose from.
Is there a person with logic and common sense that will veiw a letter to the company or is a dead end.
To whom it may concern:
I am writing to you today because of experience with a Blackberry Curve
8320 that I purchased through T-Mobile in 2008. That would have been
Blackberry #1.
I have since been issued 3 more. The problems have ranged from   trackball
failure, key pad failures, spontaneous text deletion, battery charging
failures, and a few things that I can not remember anymore.
T-Mobile keeps telling me that they will not give me a different model
unless I pay for it, that the curve is under warranty and it must be replaced
with the same model.
Perhaps I am just very unlucky and have received four of the few curve
failures, some how I'm not convinced of that. I do like the set up and
functions of the phone. It should and does provide all the features that I require
and a few nifty extras that I just like. I do feel that it is not doing it
reliably. The curve (or the 4 curves that I have had) are DUDS.
T-mobile keeps sending me refurbished ones,maybe that's the problem.
I am not a fussy person and now I am just a disgusted person.
T-Mobile told me that there is nothing they can do for me, the guidelines
comes from the manufacturer---that is you.
As I said before, I love the form and function of a Blackberry. They keep
sending me refurbished replacements of a phone that is no longer made. I am
end the end of the line as far as contacting anyone who can understand the
ridiculous nature of this situation. I paid for a phone 2 years ago and
have never had a phone that has worked reliably since.
I use it for work----no actually I don't anymore because I can't trust that
I will receive my data/calls reliably.
I will re-phrase, I would like to use it for work. I travel a lot----I need
my data, text and phone capabilities internationally. If my phone worked
right, I could leave my laptop at home. WOW, that would be nice.
Have you ever tried to use Skype? It is truly innovative and handy.
A business call on skype in a train station?---- I'll just say that was not
the most professional impression I ever made on a client. I could have
really used my phone for that one. BUT-------my track ball was messed up for
that major mess.
I keep saying to myself that I will wait till a new smart phone comes out
that really grabs me and I will just buy it and forget about this Blackberry
mess. Then I think that I did wait last time and I chose the Blackberry. I
don't know who's fault it is that this is happening. Is it T-Mobile and
their service or is RIM for manufacturing a handful of bad phones.
Well T-Mobile will not own any part of this problem and I am done with them
when my contract ends this month.
What do you have to say?
This has gone on for 2 years and I am truly tired and disgusted. I do not
expect anything to be done. That's just the way things are these days. One
dissatisfied customer is a not important.
I work in customer service for American Express and every now and then
someone can not be satisfied. I tell you---it is not due to lack of trying to
help them.   I have no evidence in my case that anyone has looked at this
situation logically and tried to help. For two years I have been told that
no matter how many curves fail on me,that I will continue to be given more
refurbished curves.(I am not one of those crazy, obsessed consumers--I
swear)---all of these phones have gone bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's all, I am tired hearing my own thoughts on this.
Please do not send a "BLAH,BLAH" form letter. I design the templates for
those at my job.It will just insult me.

However when I try to run February CU or December CU I get the error:

it's possible that I messed up because
I think I installed a SharePoint Server Service Pack 2 in a SharePoint Foundation Farm.
these are the files I ran:
1 - SP2 pt-br

3 - ran configuration wizard (had na error message the first time and success in the second try)

The expected version of the product was not found on the system
In the first step I think I should have installed
wsssp2010-kb2687464-fullfile-x64-pt-br
Now I try to runthis and I get:
The update is already installed on the system.
Hopefully this is a QA Environment but it would be a pain to start over.

Ipod Classic (160GB) not recognized by iTunes on Win7 64bit

when I connect the iPod classic to my PC (64 bit Win7), I receive a driver software installation error message. Apple Mobile Device USB Driver indicates FAILED. Device Manager shows the "Apple MObile Device USB Driver" within the USB controller section with a "yield" symbol,which of course indicates a driver problem. I have followed the online troubleshooting steps, including trying other USB ports and even re-installing iTunes. The same error message however appears. It was not that long ago that all was working just fine on this system. What next ?

Hey I'm not any way a representative of Apple or Microsoft but I'll see if I can help (and any advice I give may or may not work):
I think the problem with USB drivers is that they partially install then get messed up. Occasionally that leaves your USB drivers messed up but Windows thinking it's ok.
The way I'd go about this kind of problem is to uninstall the USB drivers as though they never existed using third party software such as USBDeview.

Using USBDeview, you may want to uninstall any drivers that are causing the issue. Make sure you uninstall the correct drivers that you recognise (from the description).

No CC Programs show in the list of defaults for file associations

I have CC 2014 Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom. None of these programs show as available for associating files such as .jpg. Even if I navigate to Photoshop.exe and select it, it does not associate.
up to a few days ago if I clicked on a .jpg it would open in Photoshop. Now it does not...
An adobe agent got access to my PC and could do nothing except direct me to ask Microsoft for a fix even though ONLY CC programs are affected!!

Check that your Windows Registry keys for Photoshop.exe shell commands edit and open are set correctly. Sometime they get messed up. I think uninstalling a prior release of Photoshop that the Adobe un-install process maybe doing the damage. I stopped uninstall old release of Photoshop years ago. I just delete their install trees on my disk to revover disk space and remove their uninstall entries in the registry.

Integrating barcode asset management and LR

I have discovered to my delight that you can integrate Lightroom and barcode based print asset management. This is a way to:
automate the printing of labels for images without any rekeying of information, and
automate the process of finding the image from which a print was made
Why do this? You may sell prints or just make them for your own pleasure. It is good practice to provide some labelling of prints so you (or the buyer) knows what they are looking at. It can be helpful to be able to quickly find the source image of a print. Of course you can just include the filename in the label and type it in to find the source image. But the labels produced look a bit messy with a sometimes arbitrary filename stuck in there. An option is to include a neat barcode on the label. You can then use your webcam to read the label and direclty insert the filename in the LR search field. Presto! Up pops the image from which the print was made.
Caveat: Apologies to Mac users, I have only worked this out on a PC. I'm sure there are substitutes for each of the things I've used.
What you need to do this [on a PC]:
Lightroom (LOL)
LR/Transporter (incredibly useful for many things)
Excel (optional but part of my workflow)
A way to print labels with barcodes. I use a cheap Brother label printer which comes with the P-Touch Editor software.
A webcam
Webcam barcode reader software. I use bcWebCam which is free
How I do it:
I'll sketch how I do it with the specific gear I have and then suggest how you may get by with other gear.
Simplest workflow:
Set up LR/Transporter to export a summary file from image exports that includes all the fields you may want on your label (including filename of course). Format for comma delimited a CSV file with a header line to define the exported fields. This is saved and reused as an export preset. Routlinely I can then select the images I am printing and export them to a dummy folder which I use for the purpose of transferring Image information.
I use my label printer software with a template that merges the CSV file data onto a label, with the filename printed as a QR barcode. I generally put one label directly on the print reverse and, if framed, another on the frame rear. With high quality art prints I only do the latter to avoid any possibility of problems of with the adhesive discolouring the paper obverse. Here's an example.
Having previously installed bcWebCam, if I need to find an image that needs a bit of a search (only likely if I've not worked on it recently), I load bcWebCam while LR is running, place my mouse cursor in the search field in the library view (having selected the root of my catalogue), and hold the print label in front of the web cam. Presto! bcWebCam inserts the filename in the search field and up pops the image in LR!
In reality, I use excel as an intermediary to read the LR/Transporter data and reformat some items. One reason is the GPS information exported by LR/Transporter has some weird characters in it and they need to be cleaned out. Characters with accents or umlauts also need some special treatment. Excel also lets me define how many of each label I want printed... The label printer software reads the excel file as a database and allows printing of the required number of labels.
If you are interested in this solution you are likely to have tens or hundreds of thousands of images in which case camera generated filenames will not be unique. I add a month and year in import and conversion to DNG into LR to ensure filenames are unique. There are a range of other work-arounds that may suit your workflow better. But remember, you need something that LR will find in a single search. It may be you create a unique identifier in a EXIF or IPTC field - this will work too... Some smart bunny may point out to me there is some foolproof automatic unique identifier for each image built into LR which can be accessed and exported but I am not aware of it. I guess image creation time (to the second) comes pretty close but I cannot see how to search on this from a search field entry...
Where you may need to find some workarounds:
If you are on a PC, the one thing that is not available on the net is the barcode label printer. In the past I used to print labels on multi-label sheets with a laser printer. It's not obvious to me how to translate the unique image identifier into a barcode for this approach but I'm sure there will be one out there. But I came to the conclusion that a dedicated "on demand" label printer would save a huge amount of messing around. I think the Brother model I use is about US$79 which doesn't exactly break any bank. And the continuous paper roll I use means labels end up about 2.5 cents a pop... What makes this or even the more capable models (with auto-cutters) such a great deal is the P-touch sofware which does do all the linking of database to label and info field to barcode. This is worth the price alone I reckon. There are other free and for-fee webcam barcode readers out there too; the one I've noted works for me...
This may sound pretty complex to set up. But the reality is, once export, database and print templates are in place, it's all automatic.

The strange characters result from the fact that LR/Transporter outputs files with a UTF-8 encoding. You need to be able to read that so see them. Most applications can read UTF-8 nowadays.

Flattener Preview Highlight Settings Grayed Out

Had to re-install of my Adobe programs due to an overal computer issue.
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5 - Adobe Acrobat X - Adobe InDesign CS5.5
I have not had this issue before the reinstall. I have a Adobe InDesign file and did an export to PDF.
I chose Adobe PDF Preset - Smallest File Size, I used the default settings for Smallest File Size preset.
When I opened that file in Acrobat and went to Tools > Print Production > Flattener Preview
When the Flattener Preview window opens at the top it show preview settings. Under the "Highlight" section
the selections are grayed out. I am using items with tranparency within the PDF. Also I have successfully used this
option with this file before. Not sure what is causing the highlight options to be grayed out.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

After hours of messing with this I think I figured it out! Seems like a possible bug in the program. Turns out that even though pages throughout the PDF had trasparency, in this particular case, the first page in the PDF did not. So the "highlight" pull-down menu window is grayed out and it seems to be because the first page does not have transparency even though I had "all pages" checked.
So I went back into the PDF and selected a page that HAD transparency. Then when back into the flattener preview settings and clicked on "all pages" and went back to the "Highlight" menu and trasparency selections were there.
So seems like a weird bug in Acrobat that you have to have a page in the preview window that has transparency for it to work on all pages.

JTextArea Formatting Questions

How can I add a Scroll Bar to the JTextArea in the following code, I have tried adding it, as one can see below, however no matter what I seem to change, the scroll bar does not appear. If anyone could help me I'd grealtly appreciate it.

Date format is changing in presentation variable

Hello,
I have a problem with date stored in presentation variable.
I have simple prompt with calendar field (default date value is setted from repository or session variable to current date). Selected date is stored in PP_DATE presentation variable.
I have simple report with title to show the content of variable PP_DATE.
And now the problem.
When I navigate to dashboard page with this report I will get date from PP_DATE variable in some format (there is difference when I use repository or session variable). After I will push the start button I will get another date format from PP_DATE variable.

There is difference between session and repository variable. When I use repository variable I will get 'TIMESTAMP .......' from PP_DATE variable, which is the default initializer in repository variable manager. I tried to delete default initializer, but I is automatically added after saving changes.
When is the default value of prompt setted from session variable I will get another format of date from PP_DATE variable which refers to DATE_TIME_DISPLAY_FORMAT = "yyyy-mm-dd hh:mi:ss.mss" (from NQSConfig.ini). I have changed DATE_TIME_DISPLAY_FORMAT from standard value "yyyy/mm/dd hh:mi:ss" to "yyyy-mm-dd hh:mi:ss.mss" because I am reading some data from excel, where are dates stored in MSSQL format. But this is not the reason of my problem. I have the same problem also with standard DATE_TIME_DISPLAY_FORMAT.
The result of this strange behaviour is that I am getting errors when I am doing some calculations (for example TimeStampDiff) with PP_DATE variable. I am getting error when I am navigating to dashboard page. Everything is ok after I will push the start button.
Do you have some tips?

I want to use date prompt with default date value (from repository or session variable) and then use pp_date presentation variable from this prompt to filter my results.
I would like to use repos. or session variables, I dont want to write some select to fill default date value in each prompt.
I tried to change one date in initialization block from "trunc(sysdate, 'DD')" to "to_char(sysdate, 'YYYY-MM-DD')" because it is the same format as DATE_DISPLAY_FORMAT = "yyyy-mm-dd" in NQSConfig.ini
And now it seems to be working now.
I can use repository var. as default date value in my prompt and use date variable pp_date to filter my results. Report return result after navigation on it and after pushing Go button.
Can you confirm me that date format in initialization block must be the same as DATE_DISPLAY_FORMAT = "yyyy-mm-dd" in NQSConfig.ini?

JOptionPane handling problem

Hi all,
I'm imlementing a GUI using JPanel and paintComponent(Graphics g).
When i have to display some data on the screen i use JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(...) and the data are displayed.
The problem is that, when i close the Message Dialog, it doesn't completely disappear from the screen and so my screen is being messed up. I think it has to do with the graphic environment but i can't figure out what exactly is the problem.

Adobe Flash Player video not streaming correctly (since 10/14/11)

Hello!
I'm a full-time, daily user of Flash Player as I got rid of my TV and started depending on websites to watch live TV streaming, full episodes or videos. I've never had any issues with FP working properly until about midnight, FP video streaming is pausing/buffering every 2-3 seconds. I have already spent hours making sure my notebook (which is 3 weeks old) did not have any software updates, pc performance issues, and also ran full scans for any possible viruses through McAfee and Windows Defender which completed sucessfully. Additional maintenance including uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe FP 11, made sure all browser ad-ons were disabled, disabled automatic software to run at start-up, checked for any "failed" updates in history and fixed (1) failed update in Windows, deleted browsing history and cookies, uninstalled any unimportant software such as Bing, checked memory usage, troubleshoot issues in control panel and disabled display hardware acceleration in adoble FP settings per instructions read in online support. I do pay for IT Service through my ISP which was my last attempt to fix this issue, however, I was hoping to get any advise from you first because I did see that there is a note in your website that Adobe is performing maintenance updates at this time, and I'm hoping this might be the reason afterall. I appriciate your rapid responsse to any advise or help before I continue to diagnose any performance isses further with my IT. Thank you so much!!!!

Windows Defender is not an anti-virus program in the traditional sense, it simply sweeps the hard drive for a limited number of known malware and will not interfere with any other installed anti-virus software such as McAfee.
I seriously doubt that the anti-virus software has anything to do with these Flash Player problems at all, but regardless my advice would be to uninstall McAfee and download Microsoft Security Essentials direct from the Microsoft website - this is a full, free, anti-virus suite which also makes Windows Defender obsolete (it will probably remove Windows Defender for you automatically).
There seems to have been a lot of problems for a lot of people with Flash Player 11, if removing McAfee didn't solve your problem then I would advise uninstalling Flash Player 11 (there is a Flash Player uninstaller available on the Adobe website - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html) and going back to a previous Flash Player version to see if that cures your problem. I am in the process of doing the same thing myself as since updating to 11 my streaming video has been messed up, I can think of no other explanation than shoddy coding / testing in Flash Player 11.
