Messed up my Quick Look Folder
Hi,
I was trying to install "Folder Viewer" (by XDD) on my system after upgrading to Snow Leopard, and I think I messed up or deleted much of the contents within System/Library/Quick Look. All I'm seeing now within ..\Quick Look is "Folder.glgenerator" (the Folder Viewer app) and "iWork.glgenerator". I thought there was more stuff inside ..\Quick Look prior to my attempt to add Folder Viewer.
I tried to search the Snow Leopard install DVD hoping I could just copy over a new Quick Look folder, but I can't seem to find it on the DVD, even after viewing the package contents.
I didn't back up prior to attempting to install Folder Viewer because I didn't think a simple drag and drop was such a big deal. I guess I was wrong.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

You should NEVER mess with anything in /System by hand. 3rd party quicklook plugins should be installed in /library/quicklook not /system/library/quicklook.

yes, you were. as i said, making any changes to anything in /system is a big deal and should never be done by hand.
you can install the missing content of system/library/quicklook from the snow leopard install DVD using Pacifist. use Pacifist's search window to quickly find it.

Quick Look copies attachments to Mail Downloads folder!
Holy maloly, I just discovered why my MacBook Pro was slowly losing disk space! Every time I use Quick Look to check an attachment in Mail, a copy of the attachment is placed in the Mail Downloads folder of my user Library. My writing work entails quickly looking at lots of very large attachments and e-mailing estimates to clients. Quick Look has been a great time saver for this. Nice being able to stay in Mail and not have to open Word to examine the job. But I don't need all these additional copies taking up space on my hard drive. As far as I know, Mail is the only program that does this.
Is there any way of telling Quick Look to NOT make copies of Mail attachments?
Thanks!Hi,
Attachments to messages are actually stored in the mailbox along with the message text. It is when an attachment must be opened with another application, such as a Word document with Word, that the attachment is also placed in the Mail Downloads folder. There it can be used and edited by the application used to open it, and from there can be returned as edited to the sender or to others.
There is no reason files must permanently stay, but if you edit or otherwise alter files that have been attached, then you must elect some place to keep them for your own use.
You will note that in the Mail Preferences/General there is also a selection regarding when to remove files from Downloads folder if not edited. Any file that is not edited need not remain in the Downloads folder since it already exists in the mailbox with the message it came attached to.
Image files, since they can be opened directly in the Mail window, by Mail, do not go into the Downloads folder, but if any were opened from the message, with say, Photoshop, then that image file would also be sent to the Downloads, temporarily.

Quicklook does not work with WMV files and quick look no longer maintains resized views when viewing from a folder using the up/down arrows. Any fixes?

Quick Look of Plain Text Got Messed Up
Hi,
As a web designer, I often work with text files and I use Quick Look a lot to view my files quickly without opening any application.
Normally all plain text files such as .txt .html .css .php .srt etc. are shown in a monospace typeface in front of a white background. Other formatted text files such as .rtf are shown in the font as formatted (duh).
Recently the Quick Look of my plain text file are shown in a Serif typeface on a yellowish background. This is annoying since I really like to have my plain text files shown in "plain text". The formatted text files are shown correctly, however.
I have a suspicion that this is cause by Writer Pro app because I installed it recently. And the font and background in Quick Look seems just like those in Writer Pro.
I've checked in /System/Library/QuickLook and nothing is suspicious and the modified time of the folder is long time ago before the issue occured. The /Library/QuickLook is fine as well, only iBooksAuthor.qlgenerator and iWork.qlgenerator are there.
Question:
How to set this back to default?
How to tweak the style of Quick Look if it is tweakable?
Thanks for your time and attention.I was not able to find any "report a problem" on the order status page.
I did wander about the Apple website and I finally found a form where I could report a problem with a print product. Apple could not have done a better job hiding the ability to report that something didn't go correctly.
I filled out the form and submitted it. Apple simply spat back some gibberish about security and encryption and suggested I upgrade to a newer browser. I'm using Internet Explorer 11, for crying out loud. I tried to back out to recover what I had written but it was lost.
Apple is really slipping now. This is three unpleasent experiences in a row - a bad order, awful chat support (from two different people - although I'm not convinced they were real people), and now a difficult to navigate and, in the end, buggy website for reporting problems. This is not good enough. I spent $345 on three books and am so far not very satisfied. -
Quick Look doesn't work properly
I can get folders to show in Quick Look by highlighting them and pressing the space bar or eye icon but then...a new window with a large icon of the folder appears and the only controls at the bottom are to open in full screen or close the window.
Have looked in Preferences and trashed the Quick Look daemon file but no change.
I've not tried to use Quick Look before (been running Leopard for a couple of months now) and am trying it now as a result of reading an item about it in the Mac Tips column so I don't know if it's a new problem or if it has always been dysfunctional.
Any suggestions for solving this would be gratefully received as, on reading what it can do, it looks like a very useful tool.
Thanks
GordonQuick Look doesn't work that way, unfortunately, there is a third party solution available that produces the behaviour you want. The basic functionality of Quick Look is to enable fast access to files and not folders...

Pages/Numbers 4.3 documents won't show Quick Look in Finder anymore?
After being dissatisfied with the features and presentation of Pages and Numbers 5.0, I removed both apps from my Mac Mini—running Mavericks—and went back to using Pages/Numbers 4.3. However, I noticed that Finder no longer provided a Quick Look of either type of document (it just shows the generic Pages/Numbers 4.3 icon instead of content), even though they will open without a problem in the 4.3 apps. A few days later, I decided to downgrade to Mountain Lion—due to Mavericks performance issues—figuring it would fix the Quick Look issue, but it still persists. All other documents—images, video, PDFS, etc. Quick Look just fine.
Any suggestions on how to get back Quick Look for my Pages/Numbers documents? It sounds like they are not Pages '09 files, they are files you have saved in Pages 5.2.
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed 110 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

How can I return to the Snow Leopard version of Quick Look?
Lion does not allow playing more than one movie clip in succession, using Quick Look. In Snow (and earlier), you can select a bunch of clips, hit the spacebar, and they each play in alpha/numeric order without clicking the arrow button to play the next one. So, if your movie project is 10 clips in a folder, you highlight each and hit Space (play), you've got to click the forward arrow per clip. That's 10 times. You can't see your project as a whole. How can you get that function back? It's the same deal when quick-looking photos.
I prefer this method because it does not put what you view into the Recent Items. The only way to return is to remove Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard.

Quick Look sometimes doesn't switch to next image.
Hello, I have 10.6.4 snow leopard.
I have some folders with hundreds of images and one with a few thousand.
When I show a client a slideshow of the images in a folder it's fine. However, if I switch to the Quick Look (the "eye" icon) and use my arrow keys to manually click through images sometimes the larger image preview (QL) doesn't update to the next image.
I've had this problem for some time (even OS X Leopard) but I was able to just click backward one image, then forward... and it'd update. Now, however, I can get several images behind in that preview even if I leave it for several minutes to see if it's just lagging.
In reading other threads about QL I should note that although I've had this problem for a while it's been worse since: I restored my Macbook Pro from Time Machine after my logic board was replaced and since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard. The TM Restore was several months ago, the SL Upgrade was beginning of this month. The images in the folders are all JPG, less than screen resolution/size (eg. less than 1280x1024 or so). These same folders cycle through images just fine in the random screensaver mode, for what it's worth but that's not ideal for client presentation.
Thanks for your time.I remembered that there had been a slight bug in the Leopard Quicklook, so that if you went to full-screen QL, then used Command-Tab to switch to another program, then Command-Tab back to Finder, you would be back in QL Full Screen, but you could now navigate with the arrow keys. At first I thought this had been fixed, and started mucking about with other key combos and accidently got it going again. Took awhile to figure out exactly what I had done, but it works like this:
1. Select your file, hit spacebar and click the full screen arrows
2. Command-tab to some other program
3. Mouse click the toolbar or sidebar of the open folder with your file in it
4. You can now navigate with the arrow keys
Although I don't really see how this is better or easier than opening the folder, hitting Command-A, then bringing up QL....

In the absence of readable guidance from Cupertino I’m still riding bareback on Mavericks, having been rash enough to install it a couple of days ago. And I apologise if any of the following thoughts has already appeared in this website.
1) For some occult reason Quick Look no longer allows me to string QuickTime movie files together for continuous play. A vandal seems to have been at work.
2) Mavericks’ infamous refusal to recognise the (extended) diNovo Keyboard Mac® Edition’s venerable F1 and F2 keyboard tricks for lowering and raising the brightness of the screen has led me to ferret out a trick that does work with the diNovo in Mavericks: fn F14 and fn F15. That trick requires only one hand. Grudging tick, VG.
3) Mavericks’ infamous refusal to recognise a simple double-left-click of the mouse as a way to open a folder in a new finder window has persuaded me to try to get into the habit of using single-right-click and then choosing the first of the options that appear in the little list, “Open in New Window”. That trick requires only one hand, and doesn’t involve the keyboard at all. All I need do is remember not to try the time-honored double-left-click method, which of course still works on my trusty PowerBook with OS 10.5.8.
4) And I now understand why the boys and girls in Cupertino abolished the fully colored file-names or folder-names in the finder: They believed that we wanted to be able to assign more than one tag (formerly known as labels) to certain files or folders with the help of those tiny circular blobs and that we wanted to struggle to distinguish the blobs of one color from the blobs of another color.Ah. In the case of Quick Look my trouble is more complicated than I describe in my earlier post. I now see that my trouble with QL in relation to QuickTime in Mavericks is that in my main user-account QL happily opens a QT file that I created in that account, and strings together two or more QT files for continuous playing, but that in a second user-account (whose original purpose was to let me test things when I struck a glitch when using my main account) QL refuses to play pretty well any QT file that I created in that second account, and of course refuses to string together pretty well any group of QT files.
And I find that in Mavericks when I do manage to get QL to play a QT file whose aspect-ratio I’ve already corrected permanenty in QL the ratio is (usually? I haven’t determined that yet) wrong when playing the file in QL. That problem doesn’t exist in my PowerBook with OS 10.5.8. My PB works perfectly in all matters to do with compatibility between QT and QL.
I wish I hadn’t caught Mavericks, doctor. Is there a cure? -
Quick Look Helper (32bit) quit unexpectedly
I have a MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4, and I've been getting multiple error reports about Quick Look Helper (32bit) quitting unexpectedly. It seems completely random, there's nothing I can so it happens. Even though I click "Ok", the error report immediately appears once again. I have searched about it and I couldn't find anything to solve my problem. Here is the error report:

Thank you very much for your help!Mr. Toad,
In fact, the issue with Java is NOT a load of hype. You are best advised to disable it if you do not have an urgent requirement to use it. There are legitimate exploits in the wild, and recent patches to Java have not resolved all of the security concerns. Best to wait...
As for your Quicklook issue, I suspect you have (or had) some 32-bit Quicklook Plugins in your plugins folder
(/Users/"your user name"/Library/QuickLook/)
If you go there and select a plugin and choose "Get Info" from the file menu, you will see in the "General" section near the top of the window "Kind" followed by "Quick Look Generator (32-bit)" if the plugin is actually 32-bit.
In my case, I had some animated GIF files in a folder and an old 32-bit animated GIF quicklook plugin. Once I deleted the plugin, the problem went away.

Default Monitor Setting for Quick Look
I have a MacBook connected to my 56" television, but I do not use mirroring because the resolution is not correct on the TV when I do that. Everything seems to default to the TV, which has the menu, except for Quick Look. It always pops up on the MacBook monitor no matter what I do. If I move the window to the TV, then it will stay there as long as I don't select another file. Anyone had this sort of problem and found a fix? Maybe a defaults command in terminal?
Check out the templates (xml files) in C:\Lighthammer\Illuminator\Templates\Defaults.
However, it is recommended NOT to change the defaults for a number of reasons.
What is recommended however is to create a "DefaultTheme" under c:\Lighthammer\Illuminator\Templates\<YourCompany>\DefaultTheme. In this folder create a standard look iGrid, iChart, etc. Mark them all as read-only on the file system when you are done tweaking them. Then, when you create a new iGrid, iChart, etc, instead of doing a "New" display template in the Template Editor, click "Load". Load a template from the Default Theme and "Save As" to where you want it. -
Did I infect my Mac mini with Fetch Quick Look?
I had a suspicious file that I didn't want to download so I did a Quick Look with Fetch.
I thought it just displayed it in memory. I now learned that Fetch downloads the file. I'm kicking myself for not checking first.
The file is a PHP Backdoor trojan that was on a Linux server. I bought my Mac Mini last week after I had a virus on my PC. It's running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.4
Where would this file be located if it was downloaded? It's not in the download folder.
I ran Dr Web Light and did a full scan. 157 files were skipped because the were locked. OS files I expect.
Is there another virus software program that I should run like Sophos?
Your help and insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!I'm getting back with some more info. Fetch did get back to me.
There is a file called 'Fetch Cache' in ~/Library/Caches/Cleanup st Startup/com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch
I did delete the Fetch Cache file in in ~/Library/Caches/com.fetchsoftworks.Fetch
I had already rebooted so there was nothing in Cleanup at Startup. When I rebooted I had a problem booting, unplugged and then rebooted without a problem. Could something install during that phase from Library Caches or would OS X prevent this?
Is a Linux trojan likely to infect a Mac?
Thanks again -
Can't customize Finder toolbar, and where's Quick Look?
Hi, all. I'm (of course) hoping for some easy answers here. I recently got a refurb iMac 24"--a beautiful thing, like new. (Used Migration Assistant to bring over old iMac docs and settings.) Since using this new iMac and Leopard, I have yet to see the Quick Look "eye" icon anywhere. Highlighting a doc and hitting spacebar brings up Quick Look (yay!), but there's no option for Quick Look in my Finder menu: no "eye" icon. And under Finder's View menu, most of the options are grayed-out: I can't select "as Icons," "as List," "as Columns," "as Cover Flow"; or "Show Path Bar" or "Hide Status Bar"; or "Hide Toolbar" or "Customize Toolbar." What's up with this?
I did an archive and install this morning to see whether it would give me fresh access to Leopard, but no change. (Hoping not to have to erase and install, since I have Time Machine and Time Capsule playing well together and don't want to mess with their relationship...)
Any insight anyone?
Thanks in advance! If you Ctl+CLick on an empty area of a Finder window tool bar, do you get the Customize Toolbar option? Is the Quick Look icon there to add? If you remove and then re-add the grayed-out icons, do they become active?

Missing Cove Flow & Quick Look from Finder once they went "up in smoke"
I installed Leopard today on my iMac and will messing around managed to loose both my Cover Flow and Quick Look icons in the Finder and can't find where they are on my computer (have looked everywhere including Applications). Anyone know how to retrieve them once they go "Up In Smoke"
ThanksI'm posting this image only so we are speaking about the same thing and are clear. If you drag the icon set back to the toolbar the items will not update? If so, please send Feedback to Apple about this problem.

"quick Look Helper (32bit)" java se6 runtime
hi everyone, i have just upgraded to Mountain Lion, everything is working as it was before, EXCEPT when i visit the Apple Store i keep getting this window pop up, i dont understand what it is all about, but so far i have always declined to Install it, because i can still do exactly what i wanted to do, which was download, uncompress and install an App
so why do i keep getting this pop up ?, is it harmfull ?, i understand that JAVA is dodgy and should be avoided !!!.
timMr. Toad,
In fact, the issue with Java is NOT a load of hype. You are best advised to disable it if you do not have an urgent requirement to use it. There are legitimate exploits in the wild, and recent patches to Java have not resolved all of the security concerns. Best to wait...
