Messed up permissions - can no longer bootup

I will start by acknowledging that I got myself into this mess. After months of being annoyed that my user account permissions seemed to be off a little on my Mac, I changed my permissions from the root (using command+I, then adding my account to permissions and giving me read/write, then applying it to all enclosed items). After processing this for a while, things seemed normal.
Then I went to run a program, and got an error about permissions. I didn't write it down at the time. I tried Disk Utility, and got the same error. Nothing new would run. I then rebooted the computer, grabbing the install DVD and preparing to repair disk permissions from the booted DVD.
Then....all I could get was the gray screen with the logo and spinning cursor. The system would just periodically reboot. I tried booting from the DVD by holding down the "C" button as it booted, but it never booted from the DVD. I was able to boot into verbose mode, and single-user mode, so I have tried investigating what to do from there.
When watching verbose mode, it seemed to hang for a moment on the appleintelcpupowermanagement item. After sitting at that for about 30-45 seconds, it would quickly pass by and indicate a kill to all processes, and a reboot. I couldn't catch anything else that was happening.
Booting into single-user mode, I ran the usual fsck and mount, then proceeded to follow instructions on other forum posts for changing permissions on the root using chmod. I've also looked at the system.log, and the last entries are from about 2 hours ago (maybe right before I rebooted) and indicate dubious permissions on items in /Library, and /StartupItems failing a sanity check.
Long story short, it seems that I've hosed my permissions in /Library or /System, and I can't seem to get them straight again to get the system to boot up again. Are there any shortcuts to addressing permissions here, and/or fixing the fact that I changed permissions from root on down to include read/write permissions for a user account?
Thank you for any help you have.

By doing this you completely hosed your system. now you should do an archive and install
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710?viewlocale=en_US
In general, NEVER use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders and the startup drive. that includes your home folder, your desktop folder etc. only use it on folders you made yourself.

  • Messed up bootloader, can no longer boot computer with CD in drive

I'm trying to dual boot Arch Linux and Windows 8.1, on a Lenovo Y580 that already has Windows on it. I went through the whole installation mostly following the Beginner's Guide, picked the Syslinux bootloader and tried to set it to chainload Windows, everything seemed to go smoothly. When I restarted the computer, it just skipped straight to Windows. I figured I must have messed up the bootloader so I put the live CD back in to try to fix it, but now nothing will boot while a CD is in the drive. It hangs at the Lenovo splash screen; I can't get to the boot menu, I can't get to the BIOS, I can't do anything. When I take the CD out and restart it boots into Windows.
Presumably I messed up setting the boot flag, or something? I have absolutely no idea how to diagnose this problem, I don't even know how to investigate it because I can't boot anything besides Windows. Please let me know if you need more information, I wasn't really sure what details would be relevant to this issue.

What is odd is that the system reacts to a CD being in the device (i.e. it doesn't boot Windows while it does if there is no CD in the device). This is why I think that the boot order is probably fine. Nevertheless, I don't see why it wouldn't boot the Arch CD. I could imaging some potential reasons none of which is either likely or common or easy to resolve.
(So for now, the interesting questions about that would be:
    1. How did you get the Computer to boot from the Arch CD when you tried to install Arch? Did you just reboot with the CD in the drive or did you do anything specific with your Windows and/or BIOS first; if so, what?
    2. If you put another CD (say, your favorite audio CD) into the drive, does it still hang at the Lenovo splash screen? Normal behavior would be that it just boots Windows.
    3. Following henk's advise and checking the boot sequence in the BIOS, what exactly do you see, what is the exact boot sequence?)
burkaman wrote:Is there any other way to get to my stranded Arch installation
Sure. Just none that would be easier than from the Arch CD. You could for instance write the Arch ISO to a USB flash memory and boot from USB, like so: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/US … In_Windows
If your problems booting from CD persist, this might be worth a try. (However, you will still have to make sure that your boot order lists USB before the hard drive.)
burkaman wrote:maybe change the boot flags some other way?
    Sure. But it is
    (1) overwhelmingly unlikely that your problem with Arch has anything to do with boot flags and
    (2) without a deeper understanding of how partition tables are designed and how disk partitioning utilities work, you are much more likely to seriously damage your other (Windows) partition(s) than to fix your Arch Linux partition(s).
If you feel compelled to try nevertheless, have a look at wikipedia's list of disk partitioning software: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_d … g_software
One more thought on your Arch installation and its non-working bootloader: If you by any chance set the default boot option to Windows and the timeout to 0 the behavior you describe (booting Windows instead of showing the bootloader) would be the expected one. If not, the bootloader has not been installed to the harddisk since the bootsector is obviously still occupied by Windows' own bootloader. (Otherwise, there would be no way for Windows to boot.)

  • My iPhone was accidentally synced to my husband's iPhone.  It's a mess.  How can I "undo" this?

How might "unsync" my husband's iPhone from my iPhone.  They were accidentally synced together and it's a mess.  He can no longer access his business e-mail on his phone and our contacts have merged.  Help!

    Hi.
I synced my iPhone to my mums,
It was my iPhone first I got it as an early christmas present
But she found the iPhone 4s for 5pound more a month
And it has more minutes so she said she would get it me and
She has the iPhone 4 which I originally had.
At first I didn't know how to log out of my email so my mum
Got mine, and I added it on two my phone the iPhone 4s
I started losing my numbers and got my mums then she lost
hers and ever since then we've shared the contacts
Ive lost her contacts twice for her and I don't want to do it a
3rd time but I can't keep our phones synced together I feel
Asif I have no privacy on my own phone when I add a new
Contact she asks who it is and how I know them I'm only a
Teenager and I want my privacy, my mate facetimed me
Before and I don't want my stuff going through to my mum
Cause she did it via my email Im very cautious about who I
Give my number to so it don't get out I don't want everyone
With my number cause people prank call
So she don't have my number and in wary it goes to my mum
So I was wondering if there's a saver way to handle this
That will not delete our contacts?

It appears to be a bug with the current build. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next release.

  • I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13

After installing iTunes update 11.1, I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13. When I attempt to repair Disk Permissions, there appear dozens of items showing that "Permissions differ on "Applications/iTunes.app....", then it says that it has been repaired. However, when I do a second or third repair immediately afterwards, I see the same thing again.

  • Can no longer print after 5/2/13 Xerox software update...

After installing the recent Xerox software update that was released on May 2, 2013, we can no longer print to our Xerox machine.  Only those who have not installed the update can still print.  Anyone else having this problem?  Do we know if it is a known issue and a fix is in the works?

Hi, no Xrox printer here to try, bit on one of the updated ones, try this...
Mac OS X: About the Reset Printing System feature ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341?viewlocale=en_US
    10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8 instructions...
In System Preferences>Fax & Print, Right click or Control+click on the Printers list Sidebar, choose Reset Printing System.
if you hold option and click the "-" tab it resets the printing system.
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
Any devices that previously appeared in your Printer List and Fax List will need to be added again after resetting the printing system.
Resetting the printing system in Mac OS X 10.5.x+++
        1.    To use the Reset Printing System feature in Mac OS X 10.5.x, follow these steps:
        2.    Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
        3.    Choose Print & Fax from the View menu.
        4.    Control-click on list of printers on the left side of the window, then choose "Reset printing system" from the contextual menu. If you don't see a list of printers, Control-click on the text "Click + to add a printer or fax" and select "Reset printing system..."

One of the folders on my external hard drive has transformed into a unix executable file and I can no longer access my files. Is there any way to save the data?

Wow, have seen Files do that, but a whole Folder as I recall!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • I can no longer send e-mail from Mail version 3.6

I am able to receive e-mail but can no longer send mail. Any ideas. It is a PowerMac running OS 10.5.8 with Mail 3.6

    Hmmmm,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

  • ITunes + Vista = my computer can no longer see my DVDrw drive...

I just downloaded iTunes 7.6.2.9 onto my Dell Inspiron E1705 - and when I restart my computer, the computer can no longer see my Optical drive (DVDrw). I contacted Dell support, and they changed something in the regedit limits or something(I'm not a techy lol), and my optical drive was back.
But the next day when I opened iTunes I got a message that says:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
    So I reinstalled iTunes.
I restarted my computer, and it could no longer see my optical drive AGAIN. My DVDrw drive gets an error that says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." When I check for solutions it says "Could not load driver software."
I go back to Dell support and tell them my optical drive isn't working. They do the exact same thing to fix it (deleting some limit with regedit) and it works. I open iTunes, and I get the iTunes Warning (Setup Assistant Error).
I asked the Dell tech what the deal was, and he said iTunes isn't compatible at all with Vista.
But according to Mac's website it is...
    Anyone know what's going on?!?!

I am having the exact same behavior as xhollysue!
    It goes like this:
    1. Install ITunes, lose optical disk drives hardware (they don't even show up in Windows Explorer).
    2. Use RegEdit to disable Upper Filters at HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}, optical drive hardware re-appears.
    3. iTunes requires a re-install to permit CD burning, and your back to square one.
I got the above fix NOT from a Dell technician, but, instead, from a Microsoft technician, which cost me $70.
I would strongly urge Apple to research this issue and come up with a more reasonable workaround since (1) the iPhone is being adopted by many traditional MS users and the use of iTunes is an integral part of the iPhone technology architecture; (2) iPhone 3G is just now shipping and will bring even more into the Apple camp; and (3) iTunes is clearly a better media player.
Come on Apple. Let's get some enthusiam and take advantage of this opportunity!

following upgrade to osx 10.8.2 on my mac mini I can no longer connect to icloud, I wouldn't mind so much but I have come to rely on th eicloud services to manage my work and home services, has any1 else experienced this and has any1 any solutions as this is messed up all of my work relations?

Had the same problem this morning after updating to 10.8.2. Mail was finding my dot-mac account as always, but System Preferences popped up and said my iCloud password was incorrect. Did the "forgot password" reset, but still had the same problem. Then I went to icloud.com in Safari, logged in with the new password, it worked no problem. So I went back to the icloud preference pane, signed out of icloud, answered yes to all the warnings about data being deleted from my mac, blah blah blah, then re-signed in to icloud. Everything worked. I did have to set up my icloud account in Mail again, which now lists the account mailbox as "iCloud", and not "mac.com" as it did before. But so far, everything is working (fingers crossed.)

  • Time Capsule - can no longer access on MBP Leopard

For the past 6 or 7 weeks I can no longer access my Time Capsule from my MBP Leopard. However, I do not beleive this is a Time Capsule issue as I am still accessing (and backing up) successfully from a MBP running Snow Leopard. Note, the access and backup were running fine for over a year and suddenly just stopped working. I've done the basics like repair permissions, software update, checked everything. For soem reason, when I try to access, I can see the Time Capsule, I can connect until I get to Data then "mylaptop Sparse Bundle". When I choose that disk image backup - just continues for ever and ever with a dialog box that says "trying to connect" or something like that.
    Any ideas appreciated ...
    thanks

    lumiere wrote:
"the current volume could not be mounted". Also "The Current Time Machine backup disk can;t be found".
Has this Mac had any problems since the last successful backup? Such as hardware repairs, especially a new logic board? A full restore?
Is the +sparse bundle+ currently mounted? If so, eject it and try again.
If not, or if that doesn't help, try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 of Troubleshooting.
Interesting to note that the final backup (7 weeks ago) failed - it looked like hourly backups worked and the final one failed ("says in progress" ?)
Yes, that's the partial, failed backup. Since it's incomplete, it won't appear in the "Star Wars" display, etc. Once Time Machine gets started, it will "recover" it, and convert it into a normal backup, with a new date & Time.
After that long without a backup, Time Machine will have a lot of work to do (including recovering the partial backup), so connect via Ethernet if at all possible. It will still take a while, but be 2-3 times faster than WIFI.

  • Out of nowhere, I can no longer read files from my timecapsule...

As of this morning, my Time Capsule, with all of its backups and files (including my iTunes library) can no longer be read from.. It says I have insufficent permission to access the files?
The TC is hooked up to my Mini in the downstairs, and the computer is saying I have no permission to access the time capsule, even as the admin account. This is confusing as I have been using it for over a year now with no issues...
It says there is an unkown user on the TC with no access, and even the admin account cant change any settings!

Videosteve, have a look here. .
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20102373#20102373
So, when I'd finished, the permissions in get info looked just as your pic shows, as mine did when all this started.
I did a few test file saves & itunes cd imports & all is now normal.
I'm coying the original data back now, I'll update you once it's there.

  • Can no longer move or copy files between drives (not a newbie issue!)

Copying and moving files between internal and external devices, and external to external devices is no longer working.
*For the first time in my life, I get a "Circle with a Bar through it" when attempting to move or copy files.*
This doesn't happen between the two internal drives at all (though I'm worried it might start). It happens between two HFS+J devices as well as HFS+J and FAT32 devices. I can delete files, create folders, and in some instances where things are acting funny, copy to, but not from the device. A noticed side effect that is now happening is that I can no longer move drive icons (CDs, DVDs, HDs) to their upper-right hand corner position on the desktop, if they didn't start there. They don't drop there, just staying where they originally sat (under a list of desktop shortcuts and files). It does not matter if the drives are USB or Firewire, and this never happened previous to about a month ago.
I have done all the basic stuff -- verify/repair drives, reboot multiple times, mount & dismount, change connection ports, backed up-reformatted-and restored the smallest drive, fixed preferences (not at all relevant), Disk Warrior repair the devices, set all permissions to R/W, check all device related infos, researched on-line for a week... Nothing. I have even taken the devices to PCs, where they work perfectly, and as expected.
This issue is apparently either a corruption, or a bug induced by Software Update, in the part of the system that handles files and file structures, or possibly the _USB and Firewire_ interfaces.
I just need to know where all those relevant parts are in the system folders, so I can attempt to restore them from a backup previous to the last "Software Update," (to be sure. And to bring this one step closer to being solved).
A system restore really is not an option, as that would require nearly two weeks of re-tweaking everything from the system to every piece of software included (updating the system about 10 times via software update, reinstalling 90% of the actual software packages... and then updating those multiple times, looking-up all the serials that get killed, etc.)
I have to correct this fast, as we need to move the files from the work drives to the archive drives before we run out of room. So any help would be very appreciated... even if you only know where a few of the system components are located (it just might be one of those, causing the issue).
    ---TIA

    {The last link in this post is most relevant, except for your recent finding.}
The reference was to the User permissions, per each; as when these
become corrupted, the simple 'repair disk permissions' and other
basic duties do not find an error with them. That is because there is
nothing really wrong with them from that standpoint.
Another odd error can happen if one is resizing partitions in an Intel
based Mac, and also if one has or had a BootCamp partition and
wanted to reclaim space. But not always. Thankfully, the only time
I tried Windows on a Mac, the media install disc was corrupted so
it just didn't happen. That was Virtual PC and Windows on PPC.
Tiger brought with it the ability to non-destructively resize partitions.
However, it was not thought to be successful in non-Intel based Macs.
The discussion on that matter came up a few years ago, so someone
has undoubtably tried that in a PPC and reported findings online.
When file sharing between user-account created content runs amok,
then the system(s) will not allow the content to be moved or shared.
So, if any shared user-account created content (including drives
initialized or handled without permissions ignored, clones wrong,
etc) are not the problem, then how does one explain these wrong
ful action circles-with-lines, or action disallowed warning symbols?
There must be a simpler answer. Do you have cats which have
access to your computers in the off-hours? They do keyboard.
Some have been thought to have technical skills outside of the
usual coy and cute play-acting people think they are limited to.
I'm sticking to the cats theory for now; the time is 3:21AM here
and I only am up to get a drink and look outside at +5°F. calm.

We have two users that have been using Creative Cloud for almost a year. Recently, sometime in the last 4ish weeks, the users can no longer run Creative Cloud apps. (Yes, our subscription is paid.) Error simply says administrator access is required to install. The apps have already been installed. The users cannot run them unless they are in the local admin group.Using "Run as admin" does not work. It gives the same error.
I have opened a case with adobe support and was basically told to suck it up and put the users in the admin group. Actually, what was said was that it is "mandated that the users have administrative rights".
There are a couple of things wrong with this. It was working for both users until recently - a recent required creative cloud update. The users have never been local admins yet the apps were working (poorly, but working).
We are in an enterprise environment and users simply do not have administrative rights on the computers.
I have changed permissions on all adobe folders, granting users or authenticated users modify or full control rights, did the same in whatever Adobe registry HKLM keys I could find. Nothing has allowed the users to run the apps - unless they are put in the local admin group.
Someone has to have a fix for this. Adobe apps have proved to have far too many vunerabilities to even entertain the idea of elevating user rights. I can't imagine that enterprise environments are allowing this.
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Jeff,
Thank you for your response. The users in question are "standard" domain users. We do not reduce users permissions below the standard level.
The apps do not load with their current standard user permissions.
The thing that makes this odd, is that up until recently they did this issue with cloud apps. The only way I can make it work for them now is to put them in the local administrator group on their pc's - which is not going to happen.
This is what they now see. As I said before, this was not a problem up until recently they would see all their available apps. If I put them in the local admin group the apps are listed without having to install. Everything is there, just not accessible to the user.
