There is a difference between language packs that affect the Firefox user interface and spell check dictionaries.
At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.
*Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
*Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can look here for dictionaries:

  • Use different language and Spell check

Hello, just got an iPad to supplement my two Android phones, and like it so far...
Except for one thing that drives me nuts...
The spell check. I live in Scandinavia, but like to use English as my interface language. This causes major problems, when I write something in Danish.
Is there any way to have English as the interface language, but use another language for spell checking?
Also, is there a way to use two different languages in spellcheck? Its really annoying to have English words pop up as suggestions when I write something in a different language and vice versa...

From a user perspective this is wrong UX and lacks total support for multi-national companies, especially when the (national) keyboard layout differs from the (foreign) keyboard layout that is being forced to use if one wants the spell check to be performed in the foreign languge.
Let's take the following example.  My language settings are set to English because I want my interface in English. The used keyboard layout is Flemish (=Dutch) (AZERTY).  When writing emails the spell check is performed in Dutch since iOS uses the keyboard related language.  This is fine as long as I write emails to people in Belgium which do read and speak Dutch.  However when I want to write English emails (and hence would like English spell check) I am forced to switch my keyboard to English (UK).  This is not really OK as switching the keyboard messes up the layout I am used to work with (English -> QWERTY).
Essentially, the selected keyboard (and keyboard layout for that matter) shouldn't have any impact on the used language for the spelling check.  To be honest I can't remember of any application/OS used so far that applies this logic.
I really do hope that this gets fixed in some way (e.g. by adding the option to select the spelling check language) in a future update of iOS.

  • InDesign's Spell Check causes recall of student newspaper at Brigham Young University

This is hysterical. And a great lesson to be learned.
    http://tinyurl.com/cd27ep

I agree. It's entirely up to the user to proof read any document going to press/print. Seriously, InDesign does not have predicative typing, predictive sentencing or predictive story, features that come installed like the new imac wheel does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuVbrm_GqhM
Sure it has a spell checker that doesn't have all the words in the dictionary in there. It can highlight mispelt words and it can offer up suggestions. But it's the end user that has to read the article, highlight the error, select the right word and check that the sentence reads correctly before proceeding.
If anything this is just bad publicity for the University and shows how well they teach their young padawans. I've no sympathy for them.
Reminds me of a time a colleague used OCR when scanning a document and put the text straight into the layout. It got as far as press before someone noticed that the words were all messed up.
You have to take responsibility for your own actions and blaming someone or something else for your own mistakes is just unprofessional.
How people here used the spell checker on the forum when replying to this?

  • How to edit the selectable languages for spell checking?

    Hallo Mozzila Community
After using Firefox nightly 23 on Chakra Linux via bundle and I think it messed up my settings of the spell checker via Firefox sync.
The Problem pop up on openSUSE and Chakra Linux but not In Kubuntu 12.04(it has separate language packs).
I want to have German and English GB and maybe Bosnian or Croatian spell checker but I can not select it via right click -languages.
Now I have on both Chakra Linux and openSUSE 12.3 Firefox 20 by default maybe 30 languages installed but I can not select the language I want.
For example on Chakra Linux Firefox 20 I have only German variants selectable,German Luxenbourg,German Belgium ... and so and I can not select other language via add-on or about:config spellchecker.dictionary; it stay alwas on a German variant so I need to edit the right click language selector to bring it to work.
2.Example on openSUSE can not select German and En_GB but I can select a bunch of other languages I do not need in the right click languages selctor.
Both are Firefox 20 with openSUSE KDE modifications and have all available spell dictionary installed.
So how can I edit the list of selectable languages on the right click-languages?

  • How to stop spell check

Whenever I type a letter, it automatically type out a word that I don't want in that specific area. For example, I would press "A" and it would automatically spell "Apples" when I actually want "A-1". BTW, I'm typing within a grid with images and it tends to mess the alignment of the images. I need to know how I can stop that from occurring. Thanks in advance.

Open Pages Preferences > Auto correction > deselect Automatically use spell checker suggestion
    Thats it!

  • Dreamweaver CS6 crashing on spell check of whole document, Windows 8.1

After using Dreamweaver CS6 happily for quite a while, it is now crashing regularly when I try to spell check more than a very short section.
I recently updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and was prompted to update Dreamweaver afterwards, which I did.
The Windows log file shows that it is MSVCR100.dll that is the faulting module.

I used the command prompt window to check for file validity, sfc /scannow but it did not find any problems at all.
    What can I do now??

That seems to have worked. But I did not find files with the names you suggested.
I did find an article while searching for DW Cache that gave paths for a lot of different versions of Windows and of Dreamweaver, http://www.dmxzone.com/go/16740/clearing-dreamweaver-s-cache/
Using that I was able to select WinfileCache and delete it. On restarting Dreamweaver CS6, spell check seems to be working,
Thanks so much for the suggestion.
Now if I can just remember it the next time something messes up! :-)

  • Spell checker reinstall

How to reinstall spell checker dictionaries?
In some reasons one of language disappeard (polish), and I have no idea how to bring it back?

    clintfromwarsaw wrote:
    But, unfortunately, nothing changed.
Does this mean that you put the pl_PL .dic and .aff files in your Home/Library/Spelling, and when you go, for example, to TextEdit > Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar, in the dictionary menu you do not find at the bottom Polski (Library)?
Also try putting copies in System/Library/Spelling.
If your computer is your work, you should indeed never run any OS X upgrade, no matter how minor it may seem, without having a bootable clone of your currently working system ready to go back to if the upgrade messes up something you must have.  It is incredibly cheap to do this.

  • 2010 Publishing Site - Disable automatic spell check

We have a 2010 publishing site.. and evertime you publsih a page it does an automatic spell check. Can this be disabled?
I found how to disable spell check on lists but I need to stop the auto check on page publish.
    Thanks!
    sayitfast

    I also experienced this issue.
So i tried uncommenting the registerSpellingHandler() line in the Spellcheck.js files like suggested by sayitfast. This worked for me in my dev environment. But i didn't like messing around with the default SharePoint files under the 15 hive in the prod
    environment.
So i searched a bit more and found a decent solution for this. You can disable the spell check for certain fields by setting the "excludeContentFromSpellCheck" attribute to "true" on text area and input controls that you dont want to be spell checked. I
did this on all my page layouts. Now i dont get false positives anymore.
The solution i found was this one: http://blog.cube4.com.au/?p=1016
This worked for SharePoint 2013. I dont know if this would work for SharePoint 2010 also.

  • I can't use word because a box keeps popping up saying that it can't find the spell check files?

I open Word and there is a pop-up message saying that word cannot start the spelling checker because the files may be missing and to make sure that the spell checker files are installed or use the Microsoft installer to install spell checker. I have never had this problem with Word before and spell check has always been fine. What should I do?

Since word is made by Microsoft you should post your question on their own forums for their Mac software as Apple Communities only provide support for Apple products:

  • Pages 08 Spell Checker Not Working

When I started using Pages 08, I turned on the Spelling --> Check Spelling As You Type. One day it stopped to work, in fact I do not know whether it is working or not since the red lines that highlighted incorrectly-spelled text no longer appeared. I tried turning the feature on and off several times, and fiddled with Text Inspector, but have foind no solution to this. Please advise, anyone. Thanks.

Repairing Permissions did not do anything for me. I have tried various and other sundry things as found in other messages about this major issue w/ Pages, but to no avail. Spell check works fine in other apps, TextEdit for example.

  • Pages 08 spell checker not working after pasting in a windows document.

I am working Pages 08. I pasted a Windows document ( Microsoft word I am assuming ? ) that I saved from another email account(not safari, school based) into my Pages document. Now the spell checker will not work in the Pages document only, Works fine everywhere else. Even if I paste the Pages text into a new document the checker will not work in the document. Any suggestions /

I figured it out. The language was set to none in the inspector

  • Pages 08 - Spell check as you type has stopped working

    Hi,
My Pages 08, which is ticked to 'check spelling whilst typing' is no longer checking spelling as I type.
It was working fine yesterday, but has stopped today.
Moreover, it's not even spell checking when I ask it to do it manually.
    Can anyone help?
    Regards,
    Mont3

I didn't install the British English language on my machines so I can't check the behavior of Pages when this language is the first one.
Here is the brute force way describer for the Blank template used in WP mode.
It would be the same for others.
    ctrl click the Pages.app icon
    show package's contents
    open Contents
    open Resources
    open Templates
    open Blank
    ctrl click Blank.template
    duplicate index-iso.xml.gz or index-trad.xml.gz in a safe area (folder named Pages-Blank-template ).
    double click index-iso.xml.gz or index-trad.xml.gz
You will get index-iso.xml or index-trad.xml
Open it with TextEdit or TextWrangler for instance.
    Search for
    <sf:language><sf:null/></sf:language>
    Replace all occurences by
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="en_GB"/></sf:language>
    save index-iso.xml or index-trad.xml
for English, the replacement string would be:
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="en"/></sf:language>
    for French it would be:
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="fr"/></sf:language>
    for Spanish it would be:
    <sf:language><sf:string sfa:string="sp"/></sf:language>
The next time you will use this template, it will default to British English everywhere.

  • How can I get Apple to pay attention to improving spell check and grammar?

I love this company and the products they develop.   I am embarrassed at the number of Apple products that I have at this point.  However, I have to say that the spelling and grammar check on Mac Mail is awful.  I am a terrible speller, and am constantly forced to go to Google to find the correct spelling of a word that seems to totally confuse Apple spell check.  But here is the thing, you often need only have one letter missing or incorrect for Mac's spell check to show no results.
For example: cannibalize.   Try spelling it with one "n" and the spell check will show NO results.  Use two N's correctly, but replace the "i" with an "a" and again it is completely useless.  Obviously, this is ridiculous.  What good is a spell check that get's confused if you are one letter off of the correct spelling?  There are thousands of these examples, and sadly, I seem to find them all.
Moreover, when it does have suggestions, they are in a ridiculous order as well.   If it suggest 5 or six words, it generally seems to suggest extremely long tail (rare) words first, and the have the most commonly used words listed last (or again, not at all).
Grammar is similarly awful.   It is the ONE area as far as I am concerned that is clearly better on Windows and Google Apps, and yet seems so basic these days.  It's been around for 20 years for goodness sake.
I bring this up in the hopes that a truly motivated developer will fix core functionality.   In the meantime any tips for me (besides snarky advice about learning to spell).

I totally agree with you, I as well, cannot compose any complex messages in Mail, however I'm am stuck using a browser extension like "Gramercy" to assist me! Maybe after many replies Apple will address the issue
