Messed up thumbnail icons in FCP bin

Hi,
This problems has been dogging me for ages.  Any ideas what make any footage I have ingested from the p2 camera in 1440x1080 as Prores 422 looks all screwed up.  (Similar to what you see if you import an image that CMYK & not RGB) I dont have this problem with any other footage. It make it impossible to browse through the clips using the browser icon view.  Have tried deleting the thumbnail cache & reset the prefs..  Clips play fine in the timeline & the source window though.
Using a new macbookpro 17 incn with lastest Lion but had the same deal on my previous laptop running Leopard.  Bowser icons also show up fine on my Macpro desktop system!
Any suggestions appreciated.  See pic attached.
Ta,
Steve.

Hi X,
Sorry for late response I have been away.  Did a log & transfer of a clip using Native & the icon view is fine! Just seems to be the case with using Prores 422.   This wont solve my issue though as I have lots of other footage from different sources that is mainly Prores 422, which means I have to render a P2 native clip every time I drop it in the timline, which would be a pain.
I will do some more searching on the web, someone else must have this happen.
Cheers,
Steve

  • FCP crashes every 10 min = browser thumbnail icon is cause or effect

I have been using FCP on a MacPro with 8gb of ram and a 2tb video raid. For the last several months, the program has been crashing VERY often (every 15 min). The crashing always occurs when I open a browser bin with video icons. As FCP brings up the thumbnails, it will get through a couple of dozen, then I get the spinning beach ball and then a crash. This has happened in bins with a dozen clips and bins with hundreds of clips. I usually can open several bins before this happens, but it ALWAYS happens.
    I have tried the following:
    reset PRAM
    repaired permissions
    trashed FCP prefs
    trashed thumbnail cache
    trashed FCP user data
changed thumbnail cache from raid to system drive, and back
tried adjusting thumbnail disk and ram cache settings
I was thinking maybe it was bad ram, but it seems to check out ok. I also have a AJA Kona3 card on the same system, but the problem seems to persist with or without the card installed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I do not have this problem if I switch to list view in the browser, but it is kind of hard to work that way when you are looking for a specific clip.

I found the AppleVADriver mentioned in the crash log. I then found out on discussions that the VAdriver is also causing problems with DVD player crashes and other QT related programs. I found a thread for DVDplayer where the guy had done the replacement of the driver from a clean version and it worked for him. So I crossed my fingers and did it on my system. After I did it, and re-ran permissions, there were a lot of VAdriver permissions that were updated to the newly installed version. The troubles with the VAdriver apparently go back about six months ago to an incremental 10.5 update.
So, after six months with FCP crashing dozens of times a day (not kidding), I have now been editing non-stop for two days on several projects with thousands of clips, and ZERO crashes.

  • Thumbnail view crashing FCP -- Kona3 the problem?

For larger projects, running bins in thumbnail view crashes FCP.
Most of the time, I'm editing 6 to 8 min. stories for a news magazine format show. We shoot on Sony XDCAM, so usually 2 or 3 disks per project (roughly 44 mins of HD viddy per disk, with anywhere from 20 to 120 individual clips on the disk).
However, for our documentaries (either 26 mins or 56mins) we shoot between 30 to 45 disks full of content. When importing the disks into FCP7, we use a bin per disc, translating into an average of 80 clips per bin. Whenever a project is this big, I can only open 3 or so bins in thumbnail view. After that, the system crashes. Even if I only keep one bin open at a time, by that fourth bin, the system crashes.
We are using a KONA3 card configuration.
    Anyone else seen this?

    PROBLEM IDENTIFIED (NOT SOLVED):
I've had this problem with thumbnail images crashing FCP after opening bins for over a year now and when going back using footage from old projects it happens more frequently. I can open 2-4 bins before it will crash FCP completely.
    TROUBLESHOOTING IN THE PAST:
    - Dumped Prefs
    - Re-installed FCP
    - Formatted & Re-installed EVERYTHING (OSX included)
    - Increased thumbnail cache size
    - Created new projects & bins, etc.
    CONCLUSION:
None of the above troubleshooting strategies worked. Increasing the thumbnail cache size may appear to work a little but problem persists with little improvement.
    HOW I IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM:
Only recently have I been working with other formats aside from XDCAM. I've recently incorporated more ProRes files into my most recent project of T2i footage from the Canon DSLR camera. If I open a bin and display thumbnails of the ProRes video clips everything works without a problem. Loading thumbnail bins with the raw .mp4 files also works fine. Only loading XDCAM files will cause FCP to crash. The problem has nothing to do with the Kona card. If you read the posts carefully here and elsewhere you will see the common denominator is the XDCAM encoded video files being displayed as thumbnail icons.
I am using XDCAM EX files at 1080p 30fps. To further isolate this problem as something having to do with the XDCAM files, another user posted on another thread:
*"I am having similar issues with two separate projects. The only commonality between them is XDCam.*
*To possibly isolate it I reinstalled FCP on one system, and installed latest Blackmagic driver on the the same. Both systems are up to date visa vi OS, FCP, and QT.*
*Both still crash with the same regularity as described here."*
Apple, this problem has persisted for more than two years and is a major problem. Just search the forums including this one. Any further upgrades of Final Cut Studio or OS X are worthless until this problem is fixed. A brand new body and interior won't fix a car with a broken engine. Please help!! Please solve this issue with the XDCAM footage in FCP!
If anyone has any solutions or work arounds please notify me. I need it!

  • Generic Icon vs. Thumbnail Icon

What would cause a photo (jpeg file) to show up in Finder with an icon that is a thumbnail of the actual photo vs. a generic icon? The two cases seem to lead to different behavior in a plug-in that I use (Mail Attachments Iconizer) in Mail. When attached to an email, the files with thumbnail icons open up in the body of the email whereas the files with generic icons do not (which is the desired behavior)?
    Thanks.

That doesn't appear to be the case. Show Icon Preview is unchecked. Furthermore, other jpeg files in the same folder have generic icons.
I should add that the files with thumbnail view as icons were edited in Photoshop in OS 10.4 (my second drive boots into 10.4 to allow me to use an older version of Photoshop). This folder is on a partition of my 10.5 drive. I am viewing the folder in 10.5 That could be why these files show up differently, but I don't understand why it should be so.

  • Using the file icon instead of the Thumbnail icon

is it possible to use the file icon instead of the thumbnail icon on the desktop? If so, how?

  • Export 1 clip to FCP bin

Is it possible to import a clip from the Cinema Tools database into FCP bin? It seems that FCP wants only to import a CT log, not directly from the CT database, so in order to bring in one clip into FCP (a clip which was already in the CT database) I had to manually edit a log so that it only showed the one clip and then use the FCP CT import log feature, which made a second copy of the clip in the CT db log, which seems kind of redundant and wasteful. Why can't I just bring in one clip (CT to FCP) without these complications?

[Roundtripping is so not on my feature list...]
Out of FCPX, simply Share > Export Movie as ProRes, any "flavor" (even Proxy should have adequate bandwidth for excellent results.) [Don't confuse proxy media in FCPX with ProRes 422 Proxy which is a full resolution format that has a bandwidth of approximately 45Mbps for 1080/30p video. Proxy media in FCPX is ProRes 422 but 1/4 resolution (i.e., 1080 video is downconverted to 960x540.)]
You can drop the video into Motion (set your project to accommodate the length of the clip, or all the clips you need), do your thing, then Share > Export out of Motion and bring the video back into FCPX.
The way I figure it, the difference between the "new way" for Motion 5 and the old roundtripping is maybe one extra rendering.
With Motion 5, you don't need the video from FCPX. You design your effect and as soon as you save it, it's available in FCPX. There is a placeholder provided (with the exception of generator templates, for which they are simply not necessary.) If you need a "reference", you can export a still and load it into the placeholder while you design, then delete it when your finished.
The way Motion 5 and FCPX work together is so much better and more efficient than the old way of FCPStudio roundtripping.

  • Konqueror and svg file thumbnail icons [SOLVED]

I was telled that konqueror can make a thumbnail icon of the svg files just as it does with other file formats (jpg, png, ...) but it doesn't seem to be working in my box.
Did anyone had the same problem before?
    Does anyone has any idea?
    Thanks

not the most elegant one, but it worked now.
I tried kde 3.4.2 from testing and got the same result, so i used abs to build kdebase-3.4.2 from source and patched kioslave/thumbnails/picturecreator.cpp from :
    ThumbCreator *new_creator()
    to
    KDE_EXPORT ThumbCreator *new_creator()
rebuild the picturethumbnail.so library and replace the system one with the fresh one and now previewing svg images in konqueror works as it should.
Since i have no idea about kde or kde development, I'm just a new KDE user, so i don't know if this was a bug just in my box, in the arch KDE package or in KDE. I'd appreciate any info from another user or developer.

  • No thumbnail/icons for personal pictures in the finder..

So, I bought an iMac recently and I'm really liking it - but one irritating issue. On my personal pictures (not default pictures like the iChat icons in the same folder, pictures I've saved onto there) in the Pictures folder in the Finder, the pictures aren't a thumbnail/icon - they're just a white sheet of paper and to view them I have to double click on them. The finder is in icon view and show icon preview is checked. I have found a way to solve it - by changing the file extension to .jpg, but I don't really want to do this every time. Is this only doing this because by default I saved these pictures as preview documents? Do I need to save them as "All Files" (the only other option under Save As)?
By the way, is there a setting to not make file extensions visible (like in Windows), I like my files straight and to the point, not all that .jpg and .gif stuff. I read there is a setting to hide extensions for individual files, but is there not a master setting that just hides them altogether?

  • QuickTime Thumbnail Icon Previews?

Is there any way to get automatic thumbnail icon previews for QuickTime files in Windows? You get them automatically for MPEG, AVI and WMV files, but not for QuickTime files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, I've just answered my own question!
    A bit long-winded...
Start to play the mp4 in Quicktime.
Pause at a suitably artistic moment in the action.
Shift-cmd-4 to take a selection of the screen and grab it as a file (I have my system set so it grabs it as a jpg.)
    Open that jpg in Preview.
Select some of the image and cmd-C to copy it
Cmd-I to open the 'info' on the file in question.
Highlight the icon in the top left corner.
Cmd-V to 'overwrite' that with the image you have just put on your clipboard.
It works! But like I said, it does seem a VERY circuitous route.
Also seems to highlight the fact that you can use any size of jpg image as an icon. Is this something new in Leopard?
Anyway, I'm sure there's a clever person out there who knows how to do this 'properly'...?

  • Yosemite thumbnail icons missing

Since upgrading to Yosemite in my early-2013 MBP 13" Retina, most of the identifying icons on my desktop thumbnails (the row of open desktops arranged at the top of the screen when three-finger sweeping up on the touchpad) are missing, even for Apple apps like Calendar, Contacts, iBooks, and sometimes Safari. The only icon regularly appearing is for Mail. Very annoying to have to click each thumbnail to maximize to see what's in each desktop! The only identifier shown is Desktop 1, Desktop 2, etc, and that appears only when mousing over the thumbnails -- not very helpful. I don't see any options within any of the non-identified apps to turn on thumbnail icons. Icons appear normal in the dock, though

  • Thumbnail icons

I need help with thumbnail icons. I want to take those generic thumbnail icons that you get when you grab a .jpg or .gif image from a web page and turn it into a thumbnail icon of the actual image.
Does anyone know of an application that can do this kind of a task? Internet Explorer 5.2 can save a thumb nail icon of the actual image but the application itself runs so slow and cumbersome now that it has become almost useless on my Powerbook or MacBook Pro.
So essentially, I want to convert those generic thumbnail icons I get in Safari or Firefox into more detailed thumbnail icons that I can get from IE 5.2. Any suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The custom thumbnails are stored in what is called the Resource Fork of a file, and Resource Forks are a Mac peculiarity and are stripped off when files are transmitted over the Internet. The Finder will create thumbs "on the fly" if you tell it to do so in both Icon view and Column view, but these are not actually part of the file. There are a number of ways to create thumbnails. You can create either an Applescript or an Automator action that will do it. There is the Contextual Menu item that Mike mentioned, visit the web site and see if they have a Universal version. One of the nicest free programs for browsing images will also create custom thumbs, VitaminSee, but don't know if it is Universal. GraphicConverter will also do it, there is a Universal version, but it is NOT free, but it is a very powerful program and is pretty cheap. If you don't have a good image editing program I would highly recommend it.

  • Picture to thumbnail icon

For many years I've been using two apps to convert pictures into thumbnail icons for my desktop - Pic2Icon and Thumbnail Pro. Now I've switched to Leopard and they no longer work. They make an icon, but the drop shadow function and other functions don't work so the icons are just flat and not as nice.
Do you know of any software for Mac that can take a JPEG or PNG file and make a thumbnail icon with a drop shadow?
    Thanks for your time,
    Scott

    Hi jsd2,
Thanks for that suggestion of CocoThumbX. I downloaded it and it did create a thumbnail picture, however when viewing it in 'Columns' view, the large area of 'border' around the image (in the form of a black film strip) means the image is scaled down so much that it is difficult to see what it is and I generally still have to click on it to force Preview to open in the next column to allow me to see which clip it is. I know I could use 'Icons' view, but I'm also converting some files to MPEG4 using iSquint, and when the 'Add' window opens in iSquint to allow me to select the file/s I want to convert I have the problem of the tiny images not being quite big enough for me to decipher what they are. The original thumbnail pictures (when it decides it will display a thumbnail picture!) are only marginally bigger but it is still better.
I've tried to get rid of the black border in the CocoThumbX thumbnails in the hope that the image can then fill the entire allocated space, but cannot find a way. Do you know if it can be removed, or possibly of another utility that has no border?
I would appreciate your further advice, thanks.
    Cheers,
    Lehla

  • Synced bookmarks to new computer but thumbnail icons didn't come along.

I synced my bookmarks to a new computer but the little identifying thumbnail icons didn't come along. So now there is just a generic empty box next to each until I click on the bookmark, at which point it refreshes with the proper icon. Is there a way to get them all to refresh without having to visit each site? Thanks much.

Try using this addon [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/faviconreloader/ here]. It refreshes favicons (The little identifying thumbnail icons) by using your bookmarks.

    Hi All,
I would appreciate if anyone can help me to figure out why my Layer Thumbnail Icon is different from 2 various psd files. Attached are the screen shot. Ist sreen shot layer thumbnail has represented icon to the adjustment whereas the 2nd screen shot doesnt have the icon. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Masters.
You guys are right. The specific graphical icon is determined by its image size and canvas size. Thanks for all the effort and time spent.

In the videos on the website I have seen a thumbnail icon next to the bookmarks icon for viewing all your open web pages. Mine is missing.Any idea why or how do I put one on?

Safari now uses tabs in iOS 5 so that icon is no longer in Safari. You have to tap on the + sign on the right side of the toolbar to create a new tab. You can open a new web site in that tab. You navigate from open page to open page by tapping on the tabs.
To close a tab - tap on the X in the left side of the tab.
