Messenger 2.04 and eDirectory

The Messenger install manual states that Messenger needs eDirectory, but does eDirectory have to be installed "on" the server with Messenger or does Messenger just need to be able to talk to eDirectory on the network?
thanks

  • Messenger 3.0 and updating vs. migrating

We are a small shop (70 users) and currently have Messenger 2.2 running on our GroupWise (GW 2014 sp1 running on virtualized OES 11 sp2) server. With the release ov Messenger 3.0 and the advent of the messenger mobile clients, we will probably want Messenger accessible from outside the corporate network.
I have a series of questions:
    1. Would it be better to migrate to a new server /VM?
    2. Will there be any port conflicts between webaccess and Messenger?
    3. What ports will need to be opened in the firewall for external mobile clients to access the messenger server?
    Thanks in advance!

I have just did an upgrade that the services were running in a clustered
solution. The install was not smart enough to pick that up. Had to copy the
config files from the nss volume to the /etc path that it wanted. Than the
agents did start and all was well. It seemed so much cleaner for the install
with 2.x and especially upgrades. Its not the end of the world if the conf
file needs to be local on the servers but not the ideal solution for
clustering when it comes time to make changes

  • IChat 5.0 and AIM messenger 6.9 and 7.0 (more about crashes)

I don't know what happened with iChat from Snow Leopard, but taking a look in this forum at least I feel I'm not the only one, and that Mac fail for real this time.
I tried to start an audio or video chat with some friends who use AIM messenger 6.9 and 7.0 -Windows XP and Vista users-, and that's what happen:
    With people using AIM 6.9.17.2:
    1. iChat quits unexpectedly during video chat (and changing the Bandwidth Limit to 500 kbps doesn't make any difference)
    2. iChat Audio and Video not working correctly (during the 30 seconds to 2 minutes it works people start seeing me into huge green pixels)
    With people using AIM 7.0.13.4:
    1. iChat doesn't allow to begin an audio or a video chat (appears a textbook saying that the other user decline the invitation, despite they in fact accept it)
iChat from Leopard always worked perfect, all my problems started after installing Snow Leopard. It's just like have changed from Windows XP to Windows Vista -sad, very sad. Any advise?

    Hi,
By Default the Windows Firewall since XP service Pack 2 has only allowed Microsoft apps to accept Internet Connections.
Any other app needs to be allowed as an Exception in the Firewall.
Turning the firewall Off does not seem to be the answer for some reason.
Open the Start Button > Control Panels Firewall (In XP they may want to use Classic View here)
    Open the Firewall.
In it's window across the top are three tabs.
The Middle one in XP is Exceptions.
    It opens a new window.
In this New window choose the Add Button.
Add AIM by navigating to Applications/Program Files to AIM and the AIM(#).exe
(AIM used to be just AIM.exe at AIM 5.9 or earlier. At AIM 6 it became AIM6.exe so that AIM 5.9 and AIM 6.x could be installed at the same time - I am presuming AIM 7 Is AIM7.exe)
If their Modem or router is using UPnP that back at the list of Apps they Should also choose UPnP as well as checking AIM has been added to the List.
I have not heard that Windows Vista is any different. (Not heard anything about Windows 7)
In their Modem or router if they are not allowing ports to be open using UPnP then they should list port 443, 5190 and 1024-5000 for AIM to Video chat.

    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and eDirectory

Hello, all! I am trying to set up a Mac to authenticate against eDirectory running atop a Netware 6.5. So far, I have been successful in binding the Mac to eDirectory, and I am able to browse the directory as well as read object attributes without problem. However, I am not able to authenticate against the server for login. I have verified that usernames and passwords are correct, and am able to authenticate against the directory on windows clients, but authentication still fails on the Mac. Running DSTrace, I consistently see the following error: " BIO ctrl called with unknown cmd 7 ". If anyone has any ideas, please help! Thanks.

Are you tracing with +LDAP, +AUTH and +NMAS on?
    > I have tried both authenticated bind and anonymous
bind with the same result: I am able to read objects and their
attributes in the directory, but unable to sign on as a user from the
    directory.
I'm not sure what you mean by that last phrase. Having bound to eDir via
LDAP, that's as logged on as LDAP gets. The DA in LDAP stands for
Directory Access, and that's all it gets you - access to the directory,
not the the server's other resources.
If you are trying to authenticate to eDir to get access to the file
system on NW you need to attach via CIFS or AFPTCP.

  • Why Can't Camera Work with Windows Messenger for Mac and give output video?

I can see from the other end, but my camera won't come on so they can't see me. I hear them and can type in Messenger, but I'd like to have 2-way video, not just receive.
My camera works as I use it in Photo Booth, so that's not the problem. I can't find a way to setup the video within Messenger. Don't know if it's problem with Messenger or Leopard.
Whatever it is, it's very annoying that I can't output video.
Anyone with similar problem or have the answer? I'd be forever grateful!
    junroe

Microsoft Messenger doesn't have video support on the Mac version. If you want crossplatform videochat, ask your friends to join AOL Instant Messenger. You can get video chat crossplatform between AOL Instant Messenger for PC & Apple's iChat which supports AOL Instant Messenger screen names. Skype is crossplatform too. An open source program called ophonex supports Microsoft Messenger's Netmeeting protocol for video chat as well. IRC is also crossplatform in videochat though its setup is a bit more complicated with the software known as Ircle for the Mac.

  • Using CSA to filter MSN Messenger file upload and download

How would i go about filtering out the file upload and download functionality in messenger ?
I've already disallowed the possibility of uploading or saving from Messenger by not allowing the program the read or write files. But when a PC without this policy on it uploads to a CSA protected host. The CSA will download the entire file but then refuse to save the file.
I'd rather disallow this functionality alltogether ? my guess are that i would hae to do some COM filtering ?
I'd be greatfull for any hints you might have.

  • Screen vibrates when booting up. It fluctuates very fast between Safari and Microsoft Messenger. Back and forth .... flicking away .... back and forth, very, very, quickly. And then when its completely finished booting, everything is OK.

I sign in and when Safari opens, whilst Microsoft Messenger is downloading, the monitor screen vibrates between Safari and Messenger at a very, very, fast pace. Back and forth, back and forth, alternating between the two. When the booting process is completed the computer is fine. Everything is OK. Anyone know what is causing this, and what to do about it?

YES .... but they have always been set to open at login. I must admit that if Messenger isn't set to open at login this doesn't happen. But even though Safari opens at login, the opening page in Safari doesn't open; I have to click on Safari again, (when I am reminded after the computer has booted-up), because the monitor screen is just blank! Then after a click on the Safari icon the screen fills up in a second. Gees, what have I unintentionally done?

  • 802.1x, Machine Authentication, Active Directory and eDirectory

Does anyone think this is feasible as a solution...
    Problem Definition.
    1) Machines all use the netware Client and authenticate to eDirectory initially, then to AD.
    2) I want to use ACS, not Free Radius.
    3) I don't want to use a 3rd party supplicant.
    Possible solution...
Does anyone think it might be possible to authenticate a machine using a certificate into AD before the user logs in using the netware client. My thinking being this... the user (or machine in this case) will have already been identified as trusted (through AD), will be connected to the network when the user submits their netware credentials. This would mean that netware could be left out of the 802.1x process completely and yet the user would still get a single sign on experience.

I did. Basically the scenrio I described in the original post worked.
The only caveat is that user auth still occurs through 802.1x once you submit the user credentials. There are regestry hacks which disable this if you solely want to use machine auth.
    hope this helps

  • DSfW and eDirectory Network Address attribute

    Hi,
In a DSfW environment, with Windows only clients, we lose the update of the attribute "network address". We need it to provide SSO with the proxy authorization.
Does anyone know if is possible to have the same behaviour than with the Novell Client? Any idea to have the windows client logon to DSfW updating the network attribute on eDirectory?
    Regards
    Jose Luis

I am pretty sure, that the SSO agent/application of the Fortinet is
able to use AD as a SSO source to the proxy. That can't be done in the
same way as against Edir, but it does work well.
I have a Sonicwall SSO based on the AD of DSfW and it works great.
Based on the complexity of my setup, where the connection to the
internet runs on a physical and logical network, which is completely
different and separated from the local network connections to the DSfW
and all other servers I am quite sure, that it would work in a less
complex setup just out of the box without big configuratrion hassles.

  • Technology for instant messenger, file sharing and picture sharing

As part of project(for studies), our team is working on software which had features of instanst messenger, p2p file sharing and picture sharing and support for storing profiles, offline messages. Although we had some idea abt how to proceed.....but we need to know which java technology would be best suited for various aspects for efficiency....
    1. GUI
    2. Networking
    3. Security (which class is suited for authentication)
    4. File Sharing(which files support is provided)
    5. Picture sharing(and formats and size supported)
anything missing we need to consider.............
and we r useing JDBC...or shud achicives be better option

    1. GUISwing
    2. NetworkingPlain sockets.
(Most efficient NIO, but that's probably a bit tought for you if you are new to java)
    3. Security (which class is suited for
    authentication)Write custom classes for that.
    4. File Sharing(which files support is provided)You either need to write code for that (use sockets) or look for a 3rd pary networking library.
    5. Picture sharing(and formats and size supported)Same as above. There's no difference in sharing an image and an mpr3 song.
anything missing we need to consider.............

  • Isilon NAS and eDirectory

    Hello,
I'm trying to get an Isilon NAS to authenticate via LDAP to eDirectory. It binding correctly with a user name and password and can look up users but won't allow those users to authenticate over CIFS. I think it might not be able to find the correct password attribute. All users have a Universal password policy assigned and the user that the Isilon binds as has rights to look up user passwords in that policy.
Any ideas? Or has someone done something like this before?
    Thanks
    James

    > I'm trying to get an Isilon NAS to authenticate via LDAP to eDirectory.

An eDirectory username and password? How does this happen if not via CIFS?
    > but won't allow those users to authenticate over CIFS. I think it might
Right... so this sentence and the previous sentence seem to be at odds.
Could you help me understand what is different about "binding correctly
with a username and password" and "won't allow those user to authenticate
    over CIFS"?
    > not be able to find the correct password attribute. All users have a
LDAP binds all work one of two ways unless they are really poorly-written:
    1. Direct LDAP bind; there is no looking-up the password.
    2. LDAP Compare: Sends an LDAP Compare request with the current password
by passing in an attribute for comparison ('userPassword') and the
password value itself (whatever that is) and then the LDAP server
(eDirectory) returns true or false. There isn't much flexibility here,
    really...
    > Universal password policy assigned and the user that the Isilon binds as
    > has rights to look up user passwords in that policy.
This is, if implemented, the scenario I was referring to when I said some
were "really poorly-written." Actually retrieving the password and
    comparing elsewhere is not the way this should ever be implemented;
there's no reason to implement it this way (see other options above) and
it's pretty unlikely that retrieving the password is not how the
application works since it wouldn't work with many LDAP vendors. In the
case of eDirectory it could work with UP, but only if the application uses
a special NMAS control to retrieve the password via LDAP, and that is also
    pretty unlikely.
    > Any ideas? Or has someone done something like this before?
Find out more about the differences in what works and what doesn't. Also,
you may want to do some tracing of LDAP using ndstrace. Enable all of the
tracing/screen options in iManager or ConsoleOne and then run ndstrace and
post the output that you see here, both of a successful and failed LDAP
test (pointing out which was which from the trace):
    ndstrace
    set dstrace=nodebug
    dstrace +time +tags +ldap
    dstrace file on
    set dstrace=*r
    #perform test here
    dstrace file off
    quit
The ndstrace.log file will have the output from your tests.
    Good luck.
