  • Windows Live Messenger Keeps Disconnecting!!!

Hi, I have a Linksys WRT54G v6, and I've noticed that everytime I'm either wired or wirelessly connected to the router,  WL Messenger tends to disconnect every so often and then reconnects again right after.   When I'm not connected to the router, and directly connected to my modem my messenger never gets disconnected.
Does anyone know how to fix this , because it gets really annoying!?!

To make sure the router works up to it's maximum potential or to avoid problems in the future it is suggested to download the latest firmware (operating software) into the router itself. This upgrade may help alleviate your messenger issue.
    To upgrade the firmware:
    1) download the firmware from www.linksys.com/downloads Look for your product model number from the list (e.g WRT54G v6)
    2) save the file on your desktop
    3) reconnect the modem-router-computer all to each other (via ethernet cable).
    4) click on start - run (type in cmd)
    5) on the DOS prompt type in ipconfig (take note of the default gateway number)
    6) open up Internet Explorer and type in the default gateway number (i.e. 192.168.1.1).
    7) username: leave it blank password: admin
    8) go to the Administration tab and go to Firmware Upgrade
    9) upgrade the firmware using the downloaded file (i.e browse and open the downloaded file then hit upgrade)
    10) after the upgrade, press the reset button for 30 seconds then turn off and turn on the router.

  • Using Linksys WRT54G as an AP

I recently moved into a new home with a roomate and our DSL box is 4 port wireless router. One desktop is hardlined into that, my laptop has no problems keeping a good connection to it wireless, but my PC in the back bedroom frequently drops connection... and I'm getting really tired of /release and /renew. I have a Linksys WRT54G v6 wireless router and was wondering if there is someway I can use this product to boost my signal to the DSL box. I'm kind of computer savvy but this is stumping me. I hardlined the DSL box into the Linksys from one lan port to the other (not the uplink) and it seemed to be working ok except for the PC that's hardlined into the DSL box. The other two wireless comps were working fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated... I really just want to boost the signal a little bit so I have a steady connection. Thanks in advance,

My PC is on the other side of the house as the router, the laptop in the middle room, and the router and other PC is in a room with the router. The channel on both routers is 11 because I've encountered problems with phones before. Its definitely a signal issue because I always connect with low signal strength and frequent drops. The Linksys has a stronger antenna than the DSL box does which is why I'm wanting to use it as an AP, even if I have to hardline it into the DSL box. Thanks for the reply.

  • WRT310n keeps disconnecting using PPoE

About 3 months ago I purchased a brand new Linksys wrt310n, set it all up and working find on DSL using PPoE. I upgraded the firmware to latest version more than a month ago, the router is being working fine all along. All of the sudden, one Sunday afternoon the router keeps on connecting to my ISP with the same PPoE settings I had there originally, then I get 2 type of issues, sometimes the router will come back and say it cannot get an IP Address, but most times it will try to authenticate using its PPoE settings, then it gets connected, stays connected for about 5 minutes and during those 5 minutes when I browse the web, the responses are very very very slow and pages don't display, eventually the connection disconnects and keeps retying, the PPoE settings keeps disconnecting. I called my ISP and their end works fine, when I connect a computer directly to the DSL modem and setup the same PPoE settings, the computer works fine and I can browse. Can someone please tell me what's going on with my router? Also if someone out there knows, what's the warranty on these devices? Remember this device is only 3 months old, I understand chances of breaking and all of that as technology is like that, but really how robust are these devices? Anyway back to my issue, can you help?

Make sure that the "Keep Alive" option is checked on the setup page of the router....Also,as you upgraded the router's firmware,I would suggest you to reset the router for 30-35 seconds, power cycle it and re-configure the router from scratch.

  • MacBook keep disconnecting from LinkSYS WAG325N WiFi Modem/Router

    Hello,
I've been using my MacBook for a really long time. Over 1.5 years I had no Wi-Fi connection problems until my US Robotics 9106 Modem stopped working. I bought a nice LinkSYS WAG325N Modem. From that moment on, my MacBook started to disconnect from LinkSYS's WiFi constantly. I used every wep/web2 etc. security protocols possible. Nothing worked.
With my US Robotics I used MAC Filtering which worked perfectly. I did the same settings to LinkSYS as you can guess that didn't help at all...
I did firmware update to my modem, it even got worse so I downgrade my modem to previous version.
I read almost every forum out there, no one has came up with a solution.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this problem, please do so, I need urgent help or else I need to take my modem back before 15th day of using it is over. And try to find some modem that my MacBook would like...
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Yes I tried with US Robotics, worked perfectly.
It worked at all caffe's wifi spots (I have no info about their modem/router)
Strange enough, I realised that, if I place my old wifi modem next to this one just connecting the power and turning the modem on, somehow macbook connects fine !? it is too weird, and nearly impossible to explain. but if I place these two modems together and connect with linksys, and the other is just on, no connection no nothing just its wifi is on, MacBook connects... but if I leave the room and go to the living room the problem occurs again.
And since all the other windows laptops connecting from living room has %85 signal power this modem is wonderful. But for a MacBook, it is nothing but pain.
If I get a chance, I'll ask a friend to bring his macbook here which is newer (core2duo) mine is core duo and see what happens.

  • Using Linksys WRT54G as a wired network extender with Time Capsule

I have been using the WRT54G as my primary home router with an Airport Express attached to it via Ethernet cable at the opposite end of the house to extend my network. I have recently purchased a Time Capsule, which I plan to make my primary router, and I would like to use the Linksys as the extender and free up the AE to take to my office for music streaming. Is this a doable solution, and is the Linksys difficult to set up for this purpose? The AE currently uses the same network name and password as the Linksys and is a seamless extension of my network. I'd like for the new configuration to be just as seamless.

    Welcome to the discussions, Hookshot!
I would like to use the Linksys as the extender
That is doable if you connect the Linksys to the Time Capsule using the ethernet cable and configure the Linksys in "bridge mode" to use the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network.
and is the Linksys difficult to set up for this purpose?
You might want to post on the Linksys forum for that question as we would not have that type of specific info on the Time Capsule forum.
and free up the AE to take to my office for music streaming
The Express would be configured to "join" a wireless network for this. The Express will pick up the strongest signal from either the Time Capsule or Linksys, depending on where they are located in relation to each other.
I'd like for the new configuration to be just as seamless.
It will be if you use the exact same wireless network name, security and password on the Time Capsule and Linksys devices.

  • Help! Extremely slow Internet speed using Linksys WRT54G router

I have an eMac running OS 10.3.9 and wired to a Linksys WRT54G router using ethernet cable. I have to use this router for my work PC. I'm also using WildBlue satellite internet. The problem is, I'm getting about 1.5 Mbps on my PC, but less than 33 Kbps on my eMac. It was running faster before using dial-up. I've called WildBlue and Linksys tech support, and they can't help. Can anyone help?
By the way, my son is using his iBook on the same router, only wireless, and he's happy with the speed he's getting compared to dial-up.
    Thanks,
    Eric

1400 kbps is a lot nicer than 33 kbps, isn't it? You can possiblly tweak it a little more --- I know I've seen a MTU of 1460 mentioned --- since you can also revert back to the 1400 MTU setting you found.
(Broadband Optimizer is in one sense a nice GUI to the terminal commnads you found and used.)
One more thing to be aware of, satellite internet is subject to longer latency times than cable or DSL, due to the unavoidable geometry of bouncing data packets off a satellite in orbit. That could be an issue if you ever want to play real-time online multiplayer adventure type games. It shouldn't be an issue for being able to grab OS updates in minutes instead of hours, through. Enjoy your broadband access!

  • Wired-Wireless newtork using Linksys wrt54g?

I've searched the discussions but haven't found the info I'm looking for. I'd could really use some help connecting my iMac (15" FP) to a Linksys wrt54g (v.5) router.
The ISP comes to the DSL modem, which is configured to PPPoE. The DSL modem is connected to the WRT54g which is then hard-wired to the iMac. In another part of the house I have a Nintendo Wii that I'd like to connect to one AE to establish an internet connection, and another AE to use with AirTunes.
Specifically, I need to know whether to set the DSL modem to Bridge mode (or leave it in Router mode, and then how to set up the 54g.
Once the router is set, then I think I use Airport Admin Utility to find each Airport Express.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to set up this AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a Remote Base Station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
The following articles should prove helpful in setting up a WDS between the Linksys WRT54G & the AX:

and another AE to use with AirTunes
...and this AX you will want to set up in "Client Mode".

  • Connection keeps disconnecting randomly on WRT54GS

I have a WRT54GS router using AT&T DSL. My computer (Vista 64-bit) has a Linksys WUSB600N wireless adapter.
Recently, I've been disconnecting randomly from my router. Once I've disconnected, I have to restart the computer because I can't see my router under the "connect to a network" option. I've just tried changing the channel from 6 to 1, but it still didn't work. I reinstalled my adapter's driver, but it still occurs.
My sister's laptop and iPod Touch have no problems with disconnecting. I don't know what else to try. It's hard to get any work done.

Have you downloaded the drivers for the wireless network adapter from the Linksys website and tried to update the drivers on your computer and then install the drivers on your computer and then try to connect to your wireless network.

  • How does LinkSys WRT54G v7 support RTSP streaming service?

    Hello,
I'm using LinkSys WRT54G v7 and I can see RTSP videos using VLC player from m.youtube.com. Strangely, I cannot play videos if other AP such as DLINK is used instead of LinkSys.
I analyzed the packets and found out that RTSP server(youtube) sends RTP packets to client's ports which are acquired at RTSP SETUP procedures. Then the packets from server cannot reach the client because UDP hole is not punched at the AP.
But, when I use LinkSys, the RTP packets can traverse the NAT.
Here goes my question. Does LinkSys provide the NAT traversal of the RTSP streaming service? Then, why can't I find any feature list about this from the LinkSys product information? Any explanation about this?
Thank you in advance for your help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. None of the NAT helpers in Linksys firmware are documented anywhere.
    2. Possibly, they have added a helper for RTP.
    3. It could also be that the VLC player forwards the port using UPnP.

  • Linksys WRT120N Keeps disconnecting

    Greetings everyone!
Well, my problem is that my Cisco Linksys WRT120N router keeps disconnecting, my family and me are all using the wireless connection. But sometimes the router just disconnect us all, its like its restarting, it only close down for like 5 - 10 secounds and then its back on. Sometimes it does it like every secound hour and sometimes it does it 3 times in 10 min. I usually play games on it and even tho I am the only one using it, it still disconnects.
We got 2 wireless cameras running on a secound router that is merged (Thats what the nerd that setted it up for us told me) with the primary existing router. I am not really that good at computer I just dont want to get disconnected all the time.
Have a really good weekend and take care!

    Hi there,
If this is true on both wired and wireless connection, isolate the concern by connecting your computer to the modem directly. Observe the connection while connected to the modem. If the connection is unstable behind the modem, you need to contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to fix the issue. If the connection is fine on the modem, reset and reconfigure the router. If the problem is present only on the wireless connection, you can reconfigure the wireless settings. Change the channel width to 20 MHz only and select channel 1, 6 or 11 to avoid wireless interference. Also make sure the router is on a higher and open location. By the way, it would help if the router’s firmware is up to date.

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".
