Meta tag question(s)

I am curious about a meta tag I came across:
<meta name="description" content=" ">
<meta name="keywords" content=" ">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="31 days">
<meta name="robots" content="all">
<meta name="url" content="
http://www.cariholdorf4homes.com">
<meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="true">
Is this necessary and/or beneficial to a website?
How does this work?
Will this work on all websites?
How soon does an search engine identify new meta tags if a
website is active?
If I create a somewhat unique meta tag (keyword or
description) for e.g. 'Revere's Electric Gates', will this get
placed near the top of search engines?
How can I increase the odds of getting near the top of a
search?

> <meta name="description" content=" ">
Use the description meta tag for marketing purposes. It's
usually (not
always, but very often) the snippet that is shown below the
page title in
search results. It doesn't affect WHERE in the SERPS your
site appears, but
it can affect whether a person is motivated to click through
to your site.
> <meta name="keywords" content=" ">
Pretty worthless. Don't bother.
> <meta name="revisit-after" content="31 days">
Worthless.
> <meta name="robots" content="all">
"Robots all" is the default behavior. No need for this one.
You only need to
use the robots tag to specify non-default behavior, e.g., no
index or no
follow.
> <meta name="url" content="
http://www.cariholdorf4homes.com">
Non standard, not in any specs anywhere, therefore worthless.
> <meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing"
content="true">
This was worth using in the past when MS was trying to use
its proprietary
SmartTags technology to hijack visitors. I don't know that
there's any need
for it currently, although I long ago put it it in my own
default template,
so it's probably in every site I create.
One more to consider:
<meta http-equiv="imagetoolbar" content="no">
I use this one to keep Windows from popping up that annoying
and distracting
image toolbar whenever the mouse is hovering over an image on
the page.

  • Easy / Dumb Question re: Meta Tags

    Where do I put in the keywords that I want the search engines
    to pick up?
    &lt;meta http-equiv=&quot;Content-Type&quot;
    content=&quot;text/html; charset=utf-8&quot; /&gt;
    Is it where &quot;Content Type&quot; is?
    Thanks

    What Micha is trying to tell you is that the keyword meta tag
    is useless.
    Your keywords should go into the content on the page, and
    when it is used in
    semantically meaningful ways, it will be picked up by the
    search engines.
    For example, on a page about dog food, you would want to make
    sure that you
    have something like -
    <h1>Dog food for all canine breeds</h1>
    at the top of your page's content. This page will then be
    scored for "dog",
    "food", "canine" and "breeds". See? The quality of that score
    will also
    depend on other things, like the contents of the
    <title> tag, the names of
    the files that are linked from the page, and the density of
    these keywords
    in the paragraphs that constitute the content of the page.

  • Best Practice for Placing meta tags in HEAD of document

    Good afternoon,
    We are utilizing Oracle UCM's ability to dynamically generate pages based on page templates, region templates, and contributor data files that contributors may edit and publish. We have a specific need to include meta tags in the head section of each page that are custom to the data present in each contributor data file. Including the meta tags in the region template that pertains to a section of our website does not work, as it does not include a <head> section. Alternatively, I can not place the meta tags in the page template, as the data in each meta tag is specific to the metadata surrounding each contributor data file.
    My question is this: Is there a best practice, or Oracle-supported method of accomplishing this task? I have to believe there is some way to accomplish this, as the need for meta tags for social media sites and search engines is very common.
    Thank you very much for your time,
    Josh

    Thanks for the reply, Jiri.
    I believe that the answer is 'yes' to both of your questions above. I do have a question about the formatting of the meta tag itself, as my main question is how do I extract the needed information from a particular CDF so that it is displayed in the <head> section located in the page template.
    I have a Region Definition for the content section of my page with a 'Title' field, which a contributor can fill in, save, and create a Contributor Data File with their own specified title. Let's also say that my page template, which formats the entire page, looks like this (rough):
    <html>
      <head>
      <title>Web page</title>
      </head>
      <body>
      <!-- placeholder for header section -->
      <!-- placeholder for content section -->
      <!-- placeholder for footer section -->
      </body>
    </html>
    What would my <meta> tag look like for the following:
      <meta property="og:title" content="Title of the content section"/>
    Let's name our templates/definitions:
    Page Template: PT_META
    Region Template: RT_META
    Region Definition: RD_META
    Contributor Data File: CDF_META
    In other words, how do I extract the information included in the Contributor Data File (as well as its metadata) for use in the Page Template? Is there some sort of Idoc Script call that can be used?
    Thank you so much,
    Josh

  • HTML5 Meta Tag issue

    I have a site that is built using Project 7's Affinity Page Builder in HTML5 with a meta tag that seems to cause problems with the W3C Validator.
    The meta tag is this:
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=Edge">
    The Website is here:
    http://www.bobbybailbonds.net/
    Client liked the Affinity theme, Al Sparber earned his pay. But what's with the meta tag? I understand this causes Internet Exploder to not freak out when dealing with this kind of responsive layout. And I also came across a description of this as a bug in the W3C group: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html-admin/2013Mar/0009.html
    First question: Is there an alternative that will specifically work with Microsoft's browsers?
    Second question: Is this something that will be a known fix that is upcoming?
    Third: What happens when this is left out? What do the Microsoft browsers do?
    -Mark

    Oh, Nancy!
    I don't do Windows.
    (You did ask for this, you know)
    If you read the article, there is a php solution in the header of each page. I, personally, do like the universal solution—use it once, all pages on that web server are done.
    I had one client on an IIS server and pulled him off it. I uploaded a whole bunch of .PNG files and there were a few .PDFs that my client wanted linked. The server didn't know what the .PNG files were and didn't know what the .PDFs were, either, so it refused to serve them. Hosting provider was so slow with tech support that I pulled the site (and put it on Linux/Apache) before he got back to me. Apparently, you have to tell Windows that these are OK files to host.
    Sheesh!

  • Are the META tags in a pdf file visible by search engines?

    I have several hundred newsletters in pdf format on a website.
    I am in the process of entering META tag information (title,description,keywords) through the Properties panel of each pdf file. Is this information that will be visible by search engines in a WordPress site?
    I ask, because every post in WordPress has a place to enter keyword tags. The problem I'm having in WordPress is that every post shows the tag information rather than making it invisible. If the properties information in the pdf file does the same thing, I won't bother with entering it again in WordPress.
    Thanks to anyone who might have insight into this question.
    Many thanks!

    It is a high order probability that your SQL's report generator is creating the PDF, not Acrobat (which by design and EULA cannot be used in as/with server).
    That the report generator outputs to an old-old version of PDF bears this out.
    Wiki articles on PDF are very nice for those high level intro summaries.
    To know / understand PDF you purchase and study the ISO Standard for PDF (ISO 32000-1:2008).
    Rather than "PDF validation" you may want to consider addressing the appearent root cause of the problem(s).
    You can change the email2fax application to one that can deal with older PDF versions.
    You can change the report generator to one that can output to the ISO Standard.
    (Perhaps the in-use application can be configured to output to the current version of PDF (i.e., the ISO Standard).
    Be well...

  • Edit Microsoft Sharepoint Meta Tags of PDF File inside Adobe Acrobat

    Hi,
    we are using in our company Microsoft Sharepoint for Document Management. In this System we have several Document Libraries where we upload our PDF Files.
    In Microsoft Office 2007 it is possible to change the Meta Data of a Office File directly inside e.g. Word. This is very handy for the user, cause he is able to read or change his document and make changes to the meta tags at the same time.
    Now my question:
    Is it possible (perhaps with an 3rd Party AddIn) to show a "Panel" inside Adobe Acrobat which shows these Sharepoint Meta Tags and makes it possible to change these?
    regards
    Yavuz

  • Using Web Widgets in iWeb to Create meta tags???

    I am using iWeb '08 version 2.0.3
    There is a feature in iWeb 08 to add HTML snippets (when you click on the button at the bottom "Web Widgets".
    I have added some Meta tags on each of my pages, for example (my keywords & descriptions have different content, this is an example):
    <META NAME="Description" CONTENT="this is my description">
    <META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="these are my keywords">
    <title>this is my title</title>
    <meta name="robots" content="index,follow">
    <meta name="GOOGLEBOT" content="INDEX, FOLLOW">
    I published to a folder, then pushed the code out to my site. When I view the source code, I do not see any of these tags on any of my pages (I put this on all of my pages).
    My question is why is this not showing up? I can certainly add this content via dreamweaver, but that would be a pain as every time I update my site, I would have to publish to a folder and then, in dreamweaver, put the code out there again on each page. What a pain in the a*@!
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Because whatever you add to HTML Snippet is actually added to another page called widget#_markup.html .
    iWeb then link this widget#_markup page to the main page with a iframe, this is the same reason why google analytics javascript and statcounter javascript don't track correctly when add in HTML Snippet.
    You better off using some scriptable applications or AppleScript to do post editing.

  • Meta tag info

    Is there a way to organize files by their meta tag, like for example itunes files. I have list of videos that I want in a particular order but if I don't have a 1 2 3 4 at the start of the file then they are ordered alphabetically, which I don't particularly want.

    This isn't an itunes question, it's a file folder question and possibly an automator question. I was hoping someone might know a automator action that might get what I want. But I wasn't sure if that would be the answer. Itunes was just a reference to what I want to accomplish outside of itunes in finder.

  • Changing default META TAG

    Hi,
    is there any solution for changing the default meta tag charset? In my case it's <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=utf8"> but I need
    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html;charset=windows-1250">. I can't simply add this meta tag to HTML header, because APEX automatically insert it's own meta tag for character set.
    thanx for your advices
    Robert

    Another issue, which i've solved on my own.
    It's not the question of character set in html meta tag. The solution for this issue was easy. You have to import data with NLS_LANG system variable set to correct language. In my case it was EE8MSWIN1250. After such import, all data are displayed correctly within IE.
    ;o)

  • Help on meta tag and pagr description

    how / where to write meta tag and page descriptions on
    dreamwaver 8
    i'm currently can't find where to write down my key words and
    descriptions on the meta tag and page description place on
    dreamwave . please advise step by step as i'm a beginner
    thanks in advance
    you can e-mail me at : [email protected]

    The code you show *already* has a keywords and description
    META tag in
    place. So - what is your question? You would either modify
    the currently
    existing ones or replace them with new ones. And the keywords
    meta is
    pretty useless as has already been suggested.

  • Title, meta tags for seo, where to put in code..?

    Hi guys
    Im trying to optimise my first ever site and Im doing it in dreamweaver. Ive figured out the title and meta tags are html and was just wondering whereabouts in my html code should I put them...?
    Are they before the body tag..? Are they before my first div tag in the code..?
    Are they in a specific div tag, e.g header div=title tag,  meta tag = main content div....?
    Any help would be great
    Cheers :-)

    I wasnt recommending he use meta-keywords, I was just answering his question. However, my employer has a huge static site with thousands of products and he is always listed in the top 5, if not number one in google searches. His site is all text with one image on each product page with an alt tag. He doesnt have ANY back links whatsoever, but uses page text content, meta-keywords, and meta-descriptions extensively. He doesnt even use heading tags. His site layout is with tables, and he uses deprecated html such as <font> and <center> tags on every page. Of course we have discussed the problems his site is going to encounter eventually with regards to his layout and use of the deprecated tags.
    I'm not saying search engines use meta-keywords, but I have to say what ever he's done has worked very well.
    My point is, I read and read about what search engines use and dont use to rank and index pages, yet I see contradictions everyday to both sides.

  • Can a website's viewport meta tag be over-ridden in Firefox?

    I'm hoping there's an add-on to override viewport meta tags. I checked about:config and didn't see anything relevant.
    A website I use, tumblr, does no browser version checking, and mis-uses the viewport setting to apply a value of "960" to every device. Since my laptop's browser window is 1230 actual pixels, the tumblr webpage is stretched out, which makes images look terrible.
    Their viewport tag minus the lesser/greater symbols:
    meta name="viewport" content="width=960" id="viewport"
    I'd like to override their viewport tag completely, as if it did not exist, or substitute one with <i>content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1”</i> so I'll have a 1-to-1 pixel ratio.
    Not much hope of getting tumblr to stop treating all devices the same; their code to get the language version from browsers for font settings has been broken for years. I have reported the viewport problem to tumblr support, however.
    I'm using Firefox 25.0.1 for Windows (Vista).

    I'm sorry that no one replied to your question.
    If you're looking for a Firefox add-on, you can search through addons.mozilla.org or ask a question on the Mozilla Add-ons forum, which is here:

  • META TAGS? How do I change meta tags while designing my website in iweb?

    META TAGS? How do I change meta tags while designing my website in iweb?

    I've designed a new website using iWeb. (I'm a beginner and have never done this before.) I published it to MobileMe. The site is for a volunteer organization, which requires that all pictures and images have text tags. (For this purpose, I assume that's the same as Meta tags.) A rep at the local Apple store clued me into iWebSEO Tool ("SEO"). I used it successfully got all my pictures and images tagged, altho it was hard and took a few hours. This was two months ago. I checked my site earlier this week and all the tags have disappeared. I went back to SEO and all my original work was still there. So I hit re-apply and then saved and republished my site. Still no tags. I have several questions. Is this a regular problem with SEO? Do I have to do all the tags over again? Is there any easier solution? Is Apple going to improve iWeb so this is not a problem in the future? I'll appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

  • How to add creater/author meta tag - DC.creator?

    I've never heard of "metadata" before yesterday - I'm still kinda new to web-design. But I added a description + key words so far, and want to add my name as the "creator".
    1st question - Will I have to add "meta data" to each individual page? Or does it apply to the entire site?
    2nd question - This site: http://webdesign.about.com/od/dreamweaverhowtos/ig/Meta-Tags-in-Dreamweaver/Part-6--Add-Yo ur-Own-Meta-Tags.htm
    said I can add an author by going to insert > html > head tags > meta, then using DC.creator as the name, then my name for the value. But there's nowhere to type DC.creator, unless that goes under value, and my name goes under "content."
    Anyway, this is what I ended up with - is this correct?
    <meta name="DC.creator" content="my name" value="my name" />
    thanks all!

    thanks - but that's the same link i posted. lol
    I was wondering where to type what - Does DC.creator go into the "value" box, and my name into the "content" box?
    It gives me : <meta name="DC.creator" content="my name" />
    I changed it to : <meta name="DC.creator" content="my name" value="my name" />

  • How do I add multiple scripts from search engines to my meta tag properties?

    I currently have copied the goolge script for website varification and analytics, etc and pasted it into my meta tag properties dialog box. There is no problem as far as Google varifying the page. However, I would like to copy Bing's search engine script into my meta tag in addition to Googles script. How do I go about doing this? Do I hit the return on my keyboard under the ending of Googles script, then paste in the Bing script?
    The the last part of the Google script ending in this:
    </script>
    (paste new script from Bing here?)
    Will this cancel out each other and cause problems?
    Can someone walk me through this process, because Bing's search engine will not varify my site through two of the three other methods.
    Ben

    Adding a script after the closure of previous script is the way to go i.e. right after the </script> tag.
    So it should look something like below:
    <script>
    Google's script
    </script>
    <script>
    Bing's script
    </script>
    Cannot comment on one interfering with the other since it really depends on what exact code is there in the scripts. Google and Bing help resources will be able to help more with this.
    Thanks,
    Vikas
