Metadata and edit with external app

Learning Aperture and have just done the trial. Considering purchasing but there is one thing that I find frustrating:
I use an external raw converter for my raw files. In Aperture I have the raw and the corresponding tiff from the raw converter for cataloging. I add then metadata to the files in Aperture for organizing. When I choose edit in external editor - TIFF - the metadata is not transferred and reverts back to what it was before being imported into Aperture. This does not happen if I use PSD as the preferred file format in the preference dialog. So I started using PSD as the file format for editing, but if I want to export masters with metadata, Aperture can't do it with the PSD files and gives an error message. What gives?

Aperture - Edit with External Editor - Photoshop

I recently made my first attempt via Aperture to "Edit with External Editor" and in my case I have the preferences set to export to Photoshop CS4 Extended. The External Editor File Format (in preferences) selected is TIFF and as advised by Apple's Help menu this is set at 16-bit. The External Editor Color Spaces is set to Adobe-RGB (1998).
I selected an image with some barrel distortion, hit the export button, and Aperture sent the new master to Photoshop. I did my fixing and saved. This automatically sends the updated file to Aperture. This is very handy and practical but I was shocked to see the size of the new and fixed file. The original file was a JPEG at 4MB and the new fixed file was a colossal 200+ MB file. I ended up throwing away the new file - too large.
I am just wondering if this is normal? This is my first time using the Edit with External Editor in Aperture and I am also quite clueless about using Photoshop efficiently and properly. Could I have done something differently and received the new and fixed file at a smaller size?

This is normal.
TIFF files get rather large and the 200 MB sounds about right. If I send a 1.63 MB JPEG at the same settings in PS CS5, I get a 134 MB TIFF after applying the Lens Correction filter and saving.
If I send the same file as a TIFF 8-bit in Adobe-RGB (1998), I get back a 54.73 MB file.
You could therefore send as an 8-bit TIFF to reduce the size. Additionally, the PSD format tends to return a slightly smaller file size (51.xx MB in the case here).
A JPEG file is actually only an 8-bit file, so it isn't really necessary to go to 16-bit, but many users like to protect against further degradation of the JPEG when editing externally (especially from posterization where smooth gradients - such as a sky - start to break down into visible steps in the color transition).
I personally send as TIFF 8-bit in the sRGB color space and if the image shows degradation, then I might change to the TIFF 16-bit (or simply not use that image).

now i need integrate obiee with external app(web application).
one user have 2 roles. one is teacher, others is school admin.
when he login in external app, the first screen show teacher and school amdin. he click teacher login in this system.
after user login in . system set the role into session.
then he want to see obiee dashboard in external app side.
in obiee side, i need do some resources control for this role.
but i how to get this role? i can get the two roles from LDAP server. but i need confirm user login in external app use which role?
i no idea for this .please help me.

Hi,
Sounds like your OBIEE apps needs to be able to get the role from the session (I assume database session), which means OBIEE needs to be able to get the same session from the external app. Does the external app set a cookie or something that would identify the session? If so use that cookie in OBIEE to get the session? More than likely need more details of the architecture of you external application!

Edit with external editor command in iPhoto

I know there is a way to set IPhoto so you can use both iPhoto and PS Elements editors to edit photos. I have seen the "*Edit with external editor*" command within the Edit header within iPhoto but can't figure out how to do this. I found the below and tried it but it doesn't allow me to set two editors within Preferences. What am I doing wrong?

FIRST set external editor to PSE
THEN change the selection back (NOT TWO selections - just this one) edit in main window leaving PSE as the external editor
once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".

Set PSE as the external editor THEN select edit in main window as the default without changing PSE being the external editor - One selection - EDIT IN MAIL WINDOW
NOW double clicking will edit in iPhoto -- Right clicking (or control clicking) will give you a contextual menu allowing you to choose PSE as the editor

Edit with External Editor not working?

In my iPhoto advanced preferences I checked the box to edit with external editor. When I ctrl click a RAW picture it doesn't open my Adobe Elements? Anybody know why?

My HVR-A1U was able to capture just fine. The only issue I had is that it has mroe frequently than FCP 7 ever did find Timecode breaks and split my clip apart. I never had breaks before, so while it is possible I had them on this latest tape, I think X is just more picky. I mean heck, it found three in a one minute timeframe. My A1U worked with X without me needing to adjsut any settings form how I had it setup for 7.

Finding photos and editing with Photoshop

to locate a photo in iPhoto library I use Spotlight to search for it - why doesn't iPhoto show in the info window the path to the selected photo? Is there a quick way to locate a particular photo in iPhoto library?

You set up PS to be the external editor in iPhoto's preferences.
Once you set up PS there, you can control click on an image in the library and choose any of the editing options: edit, edit in window, edit in full screen, edit with PS.
If you edit with PS make sure to "save" the image with the same file name and flattened. Do not "save as" unless you want to save a layered file with a different name to a location other than the iPhoto Library.

AIR app communnicating with External App

I would like to make my AIR app communicate with another
application that's running on the desktop. What are the best ways
to do this?
Ideally I'm looking to call functions inside the AIR app from
a separate program, and vice versa. This is in fact possible using
the ExternalInterface capability, however, this is only available
when the separate application is an ActiveX container (such as the
browser), and thus contains the FlashPlayer ActiveX control within
it. But what if your AS3 application doesn't just run inside the
FlashPlayer but requires the AIR runtime instead? There doesn't
seem to be any way that an external app. can talk to an AIR app the
way it can call functions on the FlashPlayer.
My reasons for needing this are that while AS3 is great,
especially for creating an interactive interface, there are still
some low-level things which must be coded in another language.
Any thoughts that anyone has on this topic would be greatly
appreciated.

In theory, you can do what you want, but it is an indirect
way of achieving it, and there are some performance/functional
issues.
You can make a windows application that is an ActiveX control
container, and put the FlashPlayer control inside it. Handle the
"FlashCall" event in your windows program (this is fired when your
swf calls a custom external function), and then you can use it to
load and call whatever .dll function you want.
In practice, from what I've observed, there are some
limitations. The graphics performance of the FlashPlayer suffers
when embedded this way in a Windows app. Also, if you want to call
into the flashplayer sometimes the function calls fail. Having said
this, my experience is limited to AS2 implementations; maybe things
have improved with AS3.
Anyway, hope this helps. Would be interested to hear your
observations if you should try this route.

Can't export images edited with external editor

Images edited within iPhoto '11 export to the desktop without a problem but images that have been edited with an external editor (Photoshop CS4) will not export. The following dialog come up:
Exporting...
Unable to create /Users/<name>/Desktop/
Cancel
Don't know if this has any bearing but the problem is on my wife's iMac, not my MacPro.
Any clues to the source of the problem will be appreciated.

Thanks TD for your input. While I could not get the rebuild to work (it would show 97% done then hang up), it helped me isolate the problem. I ended up deleting all the images that were edited by PS CS4 then tried to do the rebuild again. Still no luck. I then opened the file sans the edited PS images and it worked.
I then edited one of the images using PS CS4 as the external editor and that worked. I then exported the image to the desktop and that also worked. The only think I can think of is that the original edits were done in iPhoto 9.0 and I have since updated it to 9.1. Whatever - it works and the only loss were some edits on a dozen or so family candid shots.
Your help in getting me headed is most appreciated.

Editing with External Editors

Heya folks, a quick query as i suspect ive probably missed something, i have Pixelmator installed as a cheaper image editor with much of the functionality of Photoshop, and i want to use it as my external editor. How do i go about doing that? I go to Images > Edit With> but the option for external editor is greyed out.
Any ideas?

To set an external editor in Aperture:
1 Choose Aperture > Preferences, or press Command-Comma (,), then click Export.
2 Click the Choose button below the External Image Editor field, navigate to an
application in the Select Application dialog, then click Select.
The application’s name appears in the External Image Editor field.
3 Choose the appropriate 16-bit file format (TIFF or PSD) from the External Editor File
Format pop-up menu.
This is the file format Aperture uses when opening files in external editors.

Garageband, snap to grid and editing with precision

I'm *this* close to buying an iPad mini. The main reason is that I run a podcast and like the idea of editing it during my daily commute. I usually create the podcast with Garageband on my Mac, so was thinking Garageband on iPad would be the obvious app.
BUT when I tested it out today on a store iPad I could not figure out a way to turn of "snap to grid" when editing audio, which means that it's impossible to make precise edits to speech - you can't just cut and join wherever you like, only at 1/16-beat (or whatever) intervals.
I'm hoping that someone here who uses their iPad for audio editing will either tell me that 1.) I'm wrong, and you can in fact turn of the grid-snapping and edit audio with precision, or 2.) there's a different app for iPad that can edit audio with precision, ideally a multitrack editor. Double bonus points if the finished multitrack can be fine-tuned on a Mac later.
Anyone?

I wasn't able to find clean up by right clicking, but on the finder menu in view, clean up is present and it works. Problem fixed.

Problem trying to update to iPhone OS 3.1.3 and issues with paid apps

I bought my iPhone 3GS when my old dumbphone died and have thouroughly enjoyed the experience. I've been having a couple of minor issues which I've been wondering about of late:
1) I know the 3.1.3 update came out some time ago, but I sync my iPhone and it won't ever update. I tried to manually do it (i.e. pressing the button that says "Check for update" in iTunes->iPhone but it just says "3.1.2 is current". At first I thought it was something to do with the apps because around the time the update came out an error message appeared when I synced that said something about the apps not being able to be installed. I was perplexed because my iPhone had all its apps working, so I thought maybe that's why it won't update and clicked on "More Information". I followed the instructions to save all the apps in my computer, then deauthorize and reauthorize my computer and sync my iPhone. This solved the error message issue, but it still won't update. So, is it something with where I live (Puerto Rico)? I want the update, but I just can't get it.
2) Whenever I try to buy an app whether it's thru the app store on the iPhone or on iTunes, I can't because apparently it won't let me use my debit card. It's a Visa debit card and I have used it for all my internet purchases over the last year and it's always worked. I contacted a support person at Apple but all they could tell me was that the bank was for some reason not allowing them to access the funds, and that I should just buy a gift card and use that. Anybody else have this kind of problem?

The link that you've shared talks about a different scenario.
In my case, I want to pass the portal user id when the user clicks on the Help Link present in the header area.
I am trying to pass it along with the Help Link Url property of a masthead iview but it is not getting passed to the target Url.
I would like to know if it is possible to pass the Portal User Id in this way or not.
Though if we create a appintegrator iview and pass the user id <User.UserID> along with the target Url, it reaches there.
