Metadata At Import

Is there a way to see the metadata at the point of import.
The way that I file my photos is governed by date and I want to be able to see the date the picture was taken before I import so that I can direct the photo to the right file on my HDD.
Any ideas anyone?

You might consider two changes to your workflow.
First, it is almost always easier to use Aperture to organize your Images than it is to do it prior to to using Aperture or at import. You might find that it saves you time to simply import into a Project as a holding bin, and then distribute the Images (and batch assign metadata) with everything in Aperture.
Second, Aperture has built into it date sorting at both the Image and the Project level. You can always and immediately find and group Images by date. You mention, though, filing on your HDD -- I assume you are creating a Finder folder tree of your Masters. Why? Also: Aperture's "Relocate Masters" command will create Finder folders by date for you. You can create your own Finder folder names using the Folder Naming Preset dialog at "Aperture→Presets→Folder Naming".
If you are unsure of the difference between an Image, a Version, and a Master, this concise guide I wrote may help clarify things. (This is not well-explained in the Aperture literature.)

Adding metadata at import --why is this much easier to do in LR?

Adding metadata at import time is a pain. The presets have helped a bit but Aperture still needs improvement. I have four areas of trouble:
1. In order to fill out a metadata preset I have to create a new temporary image version or risk changing the metadata for an existing master, fill out the fields, save the preset, delete the temporary version. I can't create a new metadata preset at the moment of import I have to do the steps above in advance of importing.
2. If i want to have a metadata view that has the 12 fields I use on import but only have 4 fields filled out in advance I can't do that without first selecting the preset then selecting the view with the blank fields.
3. In the import panel the image Information block, Files Location/filename block and Time Adjustment block take up so much room that on my MBP-15 the metadata block is nearly off the bottom of the screen.
4. Whatever metadata I use must apply to all images. There is no way to have different metadata for different images at the time of import. This requires me to open the project to add image specific metadata after import or run the import more than once for different images.
If anyone has workflow solutions or workarounds for theses bottlenecks please let me know. Here is hoping that v2 will improve on these points.

Sorry if I gave offense. I wasn't trying to start a flame war about Aperture vs. LR or whatever-that's not enlightening. I expect that for many years to come Aperture will be my primary digital imaging workspace.
I am still tinkering with Lightroom and will do so until my demo version expires in 25 more days. I think that Aperture is a dramatically better program than Lightroom. I think that over the next couple of years the gap will widen even further and the advantages of Apple's sound engineering decisions will really start to show up in v2 v3 and beyond.
Still when I work in the current version of Lightroom I find myself processing images more quickly and spend less time fiddling around with the program's UI than while working in Aperture. I have noticed other posts commenting on the same thing.
If there are other users who like me love Aperture but find their work going faster in Lightroom doesn't it make sense for us to have a discussion with each other to find out...why?

Metadata export/import to other BI tools?

Hi ,
I am using SQL DM 3.0.0.665. I need your thoughs on following.
As we build our logical/physical models in SQL data Modeler, we create our metadata for our attributes/columns.
After creating our physical model, other BI and reporting tools acquire access to the physical tables. Each tool has a process of creating their reporting layer and able to bring the tables/columns into reporting layer. It shows the column names as it is. It is not business friendly.
Do we have a mechanism to export attribute business names as meta data of DB tables?
If we define the meta data as part of physical model using modeling tools such as Oracle SQL Developer or ERWIN, will we able to import those into BI tools as report elements meta data?
Where can I find details?
How do we do that?

Hi,
there is no problem if you are building reports on top of our reporting repository - table DMRS_MAPPINGS holds information for pairs - (entity- table), (attribute-column)...., and you can take implementation and business name.
Exchange to BI tools - you need to know how particular BI tool can recognize and link implementation and business names and then you can use transformation script in order to provide required information. There are examples on this forum how to deal with files and database connection using transformation script.

Lightroom removes the camera metadata on import.

Lightroom removes the camera metadata on import. It started I think when I turned on the option for finding locations through GPS data. I have since turned it off but it still wipes camera data on import. Please help.

So I don't know what happen but my photos were being put into an auto-upload folder when synced before I sorted them out. Occasionally I would start editing the photos here. At some point during that process Lightroom had asked me about auto looking up location data off the gps data. So now under metadata right where I found the camera, lens and all that information I was to find empty gps data listed. I tried removing and re adding that folder and resyncing the metadata but nothing worked. I turned off the gps setting which I thought was causing the problem but it didnt fix it. So I reloaded the photos onto my pc and put them in the proper folders and loaded them into lightroom that way. Bingo! Camera data! I dont know what really happened but I think when I changed that setting permanently caused a problem with my auto-upload folder. I will try again to load photos into Lightroom via the auto-upload folder and see if it is missing data. I will respond when I have tried that. Thanks for all the responses.

IDOC not visible in IR but metadata successfully imported

Hi,
I have this wiered issue.
I want to import IDOC WPUSKR01 (cashier productivity) from BI.
But when I connect to BI system from IR to import Idoc structure, this IDOC is not visible.
But I can manually import the metadata from BI in idx2.
Now how to import this in IR?
I have imported other Idocs (like WPUBON) before and did the scenario successfully for BI.

Hi,
In BI Tcode we82 I have manually added the entries for WPUKSR01. Now Idoc is visible when importing in IR.
I have checked all the segments in we31, they are all released.
But it gives error:
Error: IDoc type WPUKSR01 contains errors (unable to read segments)
Then, I checked in R/3, there also WPUKSR01 was not there in we82. I manually added there and I was successfully able to import it in IR.
But the same thing is failing in BI. I have SAPALL permissions in all the systems.
Can I use Idoc imported from R/3 in scenario for BI?

Best practice metadata export/import for WebCenter portal

I'm using JDeveloper to build the WebCenter portal. When I let's say register a portlet producer along with my portal, the information about it is stored in the metadata. In case I want to move my portal from the integrated WLS which JDeveloper provides to another WebLogic server with WebCenter installation - steps which I need to do are:
1) Export the metadata from JDeveloper
2) Import metadata to my target Weblogic server
3) deploy the application
Am I missing something?
To export/import metadata from JDeveloper to another Weblogic (equipped with WebCenter) server I should use the WLST script, right?

How can I include metadata when importing libraries?

I've exported my 100 GB of photos to an external hard drive. Now I would like to split my photos into five libraries and import them including their metadata (modifications and tags, mostly) to my new libraries. Is that possible?

I actually copied the library with all its content to an external drive of 1 TB. My plan was next to delete all photos on my iMac and then copy photos by year into separate libraries. However, I was recommened to try software that allows me to organise several libraries.

Applying metadata when importing

I want to add metadata from my template to photos when I import them; however, the Metadata menu only appears on the AutoImport dialog.
Help references the "Import photos dialog box", but it does not appear on "Import photos from disk."
Is Help incorrect or am I missing something?

Has anyone seen incorrect date metadata on import?

I'm importing HDV video and have tried it with both a Canon XH A1 and Vixia HV40. I'm seeing the date offset by exactly one day—what appears as 11/20/2010 1:30 PM on the camera gets imported as 11/19/2010 1:30 PM in FCP X.
I've confirmed that the date settings and timezone are correct on both cameras and my computer as Pacific Daylight Time. Playback on the cameras confirm the date as 11/20. And changing the date settings on the computer just confirms the correct time zone offset; i.e., setting the camera to Eastern Time brings the footage in as 11/19/2010 4:30 PM. So the date is still wrong, but at least I know the metadata correctly thinks it's in the Pacific time zone.
I can't say for certain that this is a new problem. Honestly, I've never looked at this closely before, but FCP X's ease of grouping clips and the smart collections make this metadata much more useful for me. Has anyone else seen this kind of date issue, or does anyone have a possible explanation/solution?

I just imported several HDV tapes from my Sony FX1 and I am seeing the "Content Created" date 5 hours earlier than the time reported on the tape. This camera does not have a time zone menu setting. Instead it has a "world time" setting that, of course, I never set and is currently at 0. So I did an experiment where I set my world time to -5 and reset the clock to the current time. Then I recaptured a short bit of footage. I still see the same 5 hour offset. Next I recorded some video with the adjusted clock and captured that. I still have the same 5 hour offset.
A standard definition DV tape recorded in October 2005 shows "content created" 1 hour later than the date on the tape. I should note this was captured on a Canon Optura Pi SD camcorder. Go figure. I would love any suggestions on how to get the time on the tape to match the time in FCP X. I don't see that it is very useful to capture much more footage till I figure this out...
Checking Final Cut 7 it does not appear that you can even display the content created date.

Error writing metadata when Importing Lr 2.7 catalog in Lr 3 final

According to Martin Evening in his Lightroom 2 book p. 178, "If you see the icon shown in Figure 4.74 [the !], click to open the dialog box where you can either choose Import Setting from Disk if you think the external settings are right, or choose Overwrite Settings if you think the Lightroom catalog settings are the most up to date."
If you did not edit these images in another program like Camera Raw some unknown event caused Lightroom to indicate that the files were edited in another program. In this case you probably do not want to include this edit. It will probably work out if you choose Overwrite Settings which will keep the settings that you have in the LR database, disregard the changes from outside LR, and remove the !.
If you edited these images in another program and you want to keep those changes, choose Import Settings from Disk to bring the external settings into the LR database.
If you want to write the LR settings to the DNG files go to Metadata > Save Metadata to File or (Ctrl-S). I strongly recommend saving LR settings to the file. Others disagree. In the Catalog Settings under Metadata, check Automatically Write Changes to XMP, if you prefer this to be done automatically.
Whatever you do, be sure to backup your LR database, at least two or three times, and be sure that all of you images are backed up.
Follow the above procedures by doing a few files at a time, and check that you are getting what you want before doing them all.

How to add metadata on import

I can not for the life of me figure out how to add keywords on importing images. I have scoured the net looking for answers and cant find anything. I see the "Add Metadata from", but there is nothing underneath it where you can add information. The tutorial video from Apple shows fields underneath where you can add information, but I cant figure out how to get that to show up. This is driving me craaaazzzyy!! Any help sure would be appreciated!

I'm having the same issue as the image in the previous post. Anyone else have this too or a fix?
I am running 10.5.4 and the most recent version of Aperture w/ all updates
I have read thru the suggestions and deleted the plist files with no fix.
I also re-installed and the issue remains. The machine I am installing it on was just recently formatted and re-installed.
This is very confusing, looking forward to any help or suggestions.

Metadata during import not visable on small screen

There were a few other topics for this bug bit Apple has closed them so I could not commend.
On the import screen you have metadata on the right and I noticed on my 13" MacBook and 15" MacBook pro I can't see all the info nor scroll to it as there is no scroll bar.
This issue dates back to version 1 and is still there in 2.1
Does anyone know a workaround without having to buy a larger screen?

It's a really simple, the info simply does not fit on a 13" or 15" laptop screen. I posted here to find out if anyone had found a workaround for the problem.

Confused Metadata after import from catalogue

I have two catalogues on this machine. I just imported one into the other in order to merge them. The images in each catalogue have never been in the other.
After the import, most, but not I think all, imported images have an icon either saying either:
The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?
or

My confusion is because I can't see how either of these statements can be true for most of the photos, which have either lived in one or the other LR catalogue all their lives. Unless by "another application" it is just referring to another instance of LR in the past?
I also don't understand whether "overwrite settings ... with those from the catalog" means using the metadata in the current catalogue, which came from the old catalogue (and which I therefore want), or whether it means overwrite the images embedded metadata with the (blank) metadata in the new catalogue after importing.
Assuming Metadata really means literally that, and not Keywords or presence in Collections etc, then it's no biggy, as I don't use Metadata very much. But still, can someone guide me through the safest option for the 6000 imported photos?

After reading your post, I did some reading, and now I get how to us LR's Paint tool!
With only your jpeg selected in the Library module, go to grid mode displaying the other images you want to copy the keywords to. Select the Paint tool in the tool strip, and If you don't see it, select Metadata>Enable painting.
On the right-hand panel, there is a Keywording text box with a comma-delimited list of keywords in the selected jpeg. Use your pointer to select all the list, then copy.
Make sure the paint tool is set for Keywords, then click in the dim little text box next to the Paint: Keywords selection labels. It should turn white: copy the list into that text box.
Now, click on each picture in the grid you want the list applied to and it happens! A message comes up. The spray paint icon changes to an eraser, so if you want to remove the keywords from an image, just click it.
Pretty cool tool!

Lightroom is changing metadata on imported photos

I imported a batch of RAW images into Lightoom 4.4 and see that a number of the images are displaying the icon warning that metadata has been changed in Lightroom although the affected images have only just been imported into the catalog and I have not made any changes to them. 130 images out of a batch of 300 are being affected.
I have selected the affected images and re-read the metadata using Metadata / Read Metadata from File, but within a couple of minutes of being re-read, the metadata changed icon has reappeared.
My initial thoughts were that I had changed one of the preferences and something was being automatically applied, but if that was the case then I would have expected it to be applied to all 300 images in the batch which were taken on the same day on a single camera. I've created a smart collection to identify images with metadata changed in Lightroom and find that they appear to be randomly spread through the catalog affecting both RAW images and jpegs from 3 different cameras.
In order to exclude any changes to Lightoom preferences I may have made, I installed Lightroom 4.1 on another PC and created a new catalog using the default settings. I then imported the same batch of 300 RAW images and confirmed that the same ones displayed the warning icon that metadata was changed in Lightroom .
Can anyone explain what might be causing this?
The PCs are Windows 7 Professional, Lightroom 4.4 (Lightroom 4.1 on the test PC), RAW files are from Nikon D90 and D7100 cameras.

yes - all of my RAW files have .xmp files associated with them as they contain the metadata and keywords I have entered via Bridge/ACR.
Lightroom imports these details but shouldn't then be making any additional changes which need to be written back to the xmp files. This is where the problem has surfaced as Lightroom has made unknown changes to some of the photos and wants to write them back to the xmp files - see my comments below about point 6.
Point 5.
By installing a trial copy of Lightroom 5.3 on a different PC and creating a new catalog I avoided carrying forward any incorrect preferences etc I may have previously used - all photos in this new catalog have been freshly imported for testing. The fact that Lightroom displays the "metadata has changed" icon to the same photos as my original Lightroom 4.4 installation after importing them demonstrates that an unidentified Lightroom process is making changes to some (but NOT ALL) of the imported photos.
The problem is identifying WHAT Lightroom has changed and the implications of these changes.
Point 6.
"auto write to xmp" - This is not selected in my catalog settings as I want to be in control of when Lightroom updates the xmp files. At present I am still learning Lightroom so I don't want to accidentally write any changes back to the xmp files until I am completely sure of the consequences, hence my main work still takes place in ACR.

My current workflow choice is to continue using xmp sidecar files as per the following statement at

- but I have to be confident that any Lightroom changes to the xmp files are as a result of my planned actions.

All of the default Develop Settings are deselected in my preferences/presets and I don't have any import presets - the develop settings and metadata are set to "none".
Do you have any suggestions on how to identify what changes Lightroom has made to the photos where it has set the "metadata has changed" icon?

A way to clear album metadata on import?

When I put a CD (Rubber Soul) into my CD drive, iTunes gave the me the option of two different albums, both of which looked the same. I chose the second one because the second choice of the other Beatles albums' I imported had the second choice being the correct one. As soon as it started importing, I saw that it was using Chinese metadata. I went into my library and deleted the files, but every time I put the CD in the drive, it keeps tries to import the Chinese version. Do you know a way to clear that so I can choose the first album choice instead of the Chinese one?

Insert the CD and select it then iTunes menu Advanced -> Get CD track names.
You don;t need to reRIP the CD to change the song names in iTunes.
Select the songs in iTunes and iTunes menu Advanced -> Get CD track names.
