Metadata Autofill Annoyances

I've been running Aperture for 5 days, and while I've been able to live with some of version 1's quirks, the Metadata tool for adding keywords is starting to really drive me nuts.
Basically, there does not seem to be a way to turn off the "autofill" when you start typing a keyword you want to add to your photo descriptors; for example, I'm trying to add the name Gen as a descriptor, but the software automatically fills in "General". I've also encountered a bug with numbering, if I try to add "2002" in the keywords, the first digit keeps disappearing.
Now I'm realling looking forward to the 1.1 patch, or whatever gets issued to fix some of these issues. Can anybody recommend some tweak or manual application file edit to lessen the pain of this thing? There has to be a way to turn off this "predictive typing" crap...

You could use the Keyword HUD instead of the Metadata Inspector. Hit Shift-H, add the keyword "Gen" (it won't autocomplete anything there), then drag and drop that keyword onto your images.

  • Batch Change Metadata - IPTC creator fields limited by AutoFill list

I am having an issue trying to update the IPTC creator information (my name, email address, telephone number) on a number of DNG raw files shot on a Nikon D300 and referenced in my Aperture 3.0.2 library.
The issue is that, despite emptying the metadata "AutoFill List", I cannot enter arbitrary information in the IPTC fields...Aperture keeps inserting my name and contact details as they appear in the Apple Address Book on my computer.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
    thanks in advance
    Raf

I can confirm that, on my iMac at least, the IPTC creator fields are locked to the same values as my own entry in my Apple Address Book (marked as "My Card").

  • Editing Autofill List for Custom Metadata Fields

I have 13,000+ photographs cataloged in Aperture 2.1 In an effort to better manage these photographs, I have added custom metadata for my own use. The fields let me know whether I have printed for my portfolio, watermarked, added to my web site, status of release, etc. All of this data is manually entered and at times my fingers don't always hit the correct keys on the keyboard so I end up with autofill data that is incorrect. I have been unable to find a way to edit the autofill data for custom metadata fields. Selecting 'Edit Autofill List' does not give me access to my custom field autofill information. Am I missing something? Is this an oversight on my part or on the part of the application?

Unfortunately I'm not using presets to do this. I don't think presets will help me with this, but it could be just that I don't understand presets that well. I use presets for entering Metadata from a shoot as I 'import' the raw files into Aperture. Maybe I'm trying to do something that Aperture was never intended to do, yet I need to have as few locations where I track
As an example, as I print a photograph for my portfolio I mark one of the custom fields labelled 'Printed' as 'Yes'. Later I can locate those 4 or 5 star photographs that haven't been printed and decide if I want to print them. I use the same type of arrangement for my website with an 'Added to web' indicator as 'Yes'. I may also mark that 'Printed' field as 'N/A'. The reason follows. For watermarking photographs before adding them to my site via iWeb, I export and the photographs and then reimport the watermarked photographs into a separate project but since these photographs are at a lower resolution, have a different color profile and are jpegs, I never print them for my portfolio so I mark them 'N/A' in the 'Printed' field. Well my fingers do slip on the keys and before I realize it the nifty autofill now requires that I type not just the 'N' to get an 'N/A', but I must type it all, because one time I typed 'N and a space' or some such and that is what autofills. It even happens with 'Yes'. I suppose the real answer is to be more careful as I type, but that is not my reality.
So, all I'm looking for is a way to have access to the autofill list that is created for my custom metadata fields so that I can delete the erroneous autofill entry. I've thought about deleting the field entirely and recreating it, but that would remove all those indicators or flags that I have already entered for my photographs.
Alternatively I could find an IPTC field that I am not using and find a way to use it, (because those fields have autofill lists that can be edited). However my record keeping would be exported with the photograph. Some of the information that I collect is private and should not be included in the metadata while other information should be; that is why I've settled on custom metadata fields.
I hope there is a simple answer to this that I'm overlooking.
If someone else has another way of tracking this same information that is better than the custom metadata fields, I would like to hear about it. However, it would mean reworking all my photographs that Aperture currently manages.

  • Metadata Caption autofil

    Hi,
I accidently typed a capital in the caption field where there shouldn't be one. Now I'm unable to correct that mistake. Every time I re-enter the caption, without the capital, LR automatically changes the small letter to the earlier entered version with capital.
I went to File > Catalog Settings > Metadata and checked out 'Offer suggestions from recently entered values'. That doesn't make any difference. Can anyone help me to solve this? Thanks.

LR 1.3.1 for Mac on a MacBook Pro (intel)

I'm sorry to start beating this horse once again (but it ain't dead yet!) I just encountered the buggy behavior mentioned earlier in regard to editing captions (LR 1.4.1, Mac, OS 10.4.11). I tried the recommended deselection of options in File/catalog settings... , however I still cannot successfully edit the capitalization (case) of certain words in my metadata Caption entries. I can add or delete letters altogether, but cannot change from lower-case to upper (or vice versa). When I do that, the case of the edited letter immediately reverts to the original entry.
It seems that my problem occurs whenever the Caption entry is a word that I had originally entered by copy/pasting from the image keyword list. IOW, it seems that there's no problem when I edit the case of letters occurring in words that were not pasted over from the set of keywords. This is unexpected to say the least, as I assumed that "text" is just "text"; however LR evidently thinks otherwise in this situation.

  • LR4 Problem Saving Metadata

Ever since I upgraded to LR4 I have noticed a problem with metadata. I have created a Smart Collection  with the rule "Metadata status is Has Been Changed" to show me all of the images that I have updated metadata but not written the changes to disk. I am seeing the number of images in this collection gradually increase ... but not because I am working on images!
If I go to the collection, do a "Select All" and then do a "Save Metadata to Files", sure enough the disk goes crazy and the images are removed from the collection. BUT ... if I just sit back and watch ... after a few seconds of inactivity the smart collection gradually fills up again ... with the same Images I just saved!!!
Like I mentioned, it seems like this list is getting gradually longer and longer. A few months ago I had about 20 images that were behaving like this, but now I have over 250!
Anyone seeing the same thing? Or have any suggestions as to the cause?
I'm running LR4.1 on an iMac running Mac OS X Lion (10.7.4).

Lr4.3/Win7 pro 64bit-file format dng without write to xmp automatically
This returning group of 'metadata changed' issue has repeated itself in past version and currently.
I select the returnees and use the menu command  'Update dng preview and save metadata'  That appears to do the trick for no reappearance occurs.
Since I'm 'catching up' on past images that were not processed I assumed this issue could be connected to 'building the previews'.
Its an annoyance if there are many images that had a metadata change resulting from a simple thing such as keyword edit or move. I learned to do 'save metadata' often rather than watch most of a large group return into view.
Just repeating the save didn't always work but the 'update previews and save' does complete the action.

  • How can a star based slideshow be split into two using metadata?

I created a slideshow based on a five star sort. It is too long so I want to split it into two, one for Australia and the other for Polynesia.. Images are  are titled under Australia and Polynesia in the metadata. how can I use the metadata headings to creat separate slideshows? Thanks.

    Hey, thank you for responding.
Perhaps I didn't explain myself correctly. Let me try and walk you though the whole thing.
When I first synced my video, with the better audio we recored separately, left and right are both on A1. When I merge the video with the new audio, and put it back into the timeline, left and right now take up both A1 and A2. This would be totally fine, but my annoyance is simply with the fact that when editing, I have to select them separately… to do anything.
So for instance, at the moment I'm editing a dialogue scene, so of course there are times when I want to have audio from one clip, cross over into another's. Such as when a character's dialogue is heard a few seconds before we see them on screen. I can accomplish this effect with the slide too, or just the selection tool (With "linked selection" off of course), but either way, I have to select and move both audio clips separately, or I have to "shift click" to select them both. It just seems like an extra step I shouldn't have to take ever time I want to change the length of the audio in my timeline.
As I said, I am very new to Premiere Pro, I recently made the switch from Final Cut 7, and when I merged audio and video in that editor, it kept left and right audio linked together.  If for some reason you needed to work with left and right separately, you could hit a button to make that happen.
I realize it's a minor complaint, but after editing for an hour last night with this thorn in my side, I thought there must be a solution.

  • Bridge cant' copy and paste metadata

I have found a minor bug (most likely overlooked till now) in PS CS6 Beta.   when you open a folder of images in the new version of bridge and you got to the metadata.   You are not ablt to cut and paste info from one box to another like previous versions.  tell me, this will be fixed please.

P.S.  One more annoyance I have found is that your program will not allow me to place the App icons where I want on my dock bar (Mac OS 10.6.8)   I lke them to sit about 2/3rds across on the bar, but they keep putting themselves back to about a 1/3rd of the way across.     It's very annoying. I'd like to know if there is a way to stop this happening....

I disagree Richard.      I was on CS4. It became corrupted. I couldn't find my discs and I could see that CS6 beta was already out, so I didn't want to buy CS5, knowing that 6 is coming out.  Now that is why I'm on CS6 Beta.    When  I was on CS4  my app icons would stay exactly where ever I put them.   It is definitely not the case with these new Bridge and PS CS6 icons.    3 times now, I've placed them 2/3rds along the dock and 3 times now it's repositioned them to about 1/3rd of the way along.   I've never seen any app's icons do this ever and I have not changed operating systems recently.   If you're interested in looking into it.  I have a Mac Pro  2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon   running Mac OS 10.6.8 (snow leopard)   I'm just offering you guys these observations in the spirit of cooperation.     Maybe there is a hidden functionality on the doxk that this new version has activated...

    Not seen the screensaver issue.
Personally I think this update was a patch to fix the DVI flickering issues that rendered the device unusable for many people - other annoyances can be fixed later but we better keep reminding them:

  • Tar utility and metadata, OS 10.4.6

I find that 'tar' (version 1.14) on OS 10.4.6 (PPC) now includes OSX metadata files (named "._filename") when creating a tar archive. Undoubtedly beneficial in the Mac environment, but leads to some minor annoyance when unpacking such archives on non-Mac platforms (e.g., Linux) because such metadata files are normally invisible on Linux unless the '-a' option of 'ls' is used, and they remain in place when the "parent" file is rm'd (leading to creeping cruft).
Is there an option to 'tar' to disable archiving '._' files? Can anyone tell me in which version support for metadata was introduced? (Seems I recall that earlier OS X releases did not support this feature at all.)
TIA for any comments and suggestions...

    Hi Dale,
It's great to hear from you!! It's been a while but I can't forget the best. Didn't you write a driver for SCSI tape drives?
I mostly want to say hey but feel like I should contribute something. Did you know that Apple's (OK, BSD's) "find" command is smart enough to delete files itself. The following command will do the same as your last:
    find . -name "._*" -delete
    Steve,
I tend to agree with you. I put tarballs on the web and I don't want to depend on the poor suc... er, nice folks who download the stuff to clean up. GNU's tar compiles on Mac OS X and of course it's easy to install it with Fink. I renamed the executable to gtar and use that when I don't want resources forks in the tarball. Oh, if you have any spaces in your filenames you'll have to make a real mess of the following awk command but otherwise the following command will remove the resource forks from your existing tarballs:
    tar -tvf <tarball_name>.tar | awk '/\/\._/{print $NF}' | xargs tar -f <tarball_name>.tar --delete

  • MetaData for a new Class

    Hi
I am a new comer to the JDO and KODO world.
My question is about the MetaData. So far, it seems to me that the only way
to create MetaData for a class is by coding it manually. I haven't found any
utility for that mentioned in Kodo documentation.
Is that really so? It is pretty surprising if it there is no automated tool
    to create a generic metadata.
If this is indeed a manual process, I would like to know the experience of
people in this group; is this just a minor annoyance or significant work.
    Thanks

Thanks for the pointer; this is very useful. Will surely use it when we move
    to actual development.

If you are not mapping to an existing schema then the metadata is

  • IPTC Metadata Editor with Spellcheck and more

Bridge and Lightroom could benefit from a robust metadata editor. Quality IPTC data is almost as important as the images themselves. Afterall that's how we and our clients will find our valuable images.
    Desired Features:
Spellcheck of at least Description and Keyword fields
Thesaurus would be great for creating Keyword sets
More flexible keyword sets to allow more nesting and organizing of similar keywords
Autofill searching of previously used keywords
    Desired Functionality:
Must be fast and dependable. Currently Bridge is pretty slow, writing one keyword at a time. This seems to cause Bridge to hang up on itself and spit out corrupt files or not apply metadata to random files among a large selection.
Perhaps it would be better to have the enter all metadata additions and changes at once to all selected files and hit update, append or replace. FotoStation has had a useful interface in which the user can opt to replace and/or append and/or leave alone various metadata fields all at once.
Currently it is difficult to resolve a large selection of files that all should have the same keyword(s) but some already have it. We are forced to first remove the keywords(s) by pressing the minus sign, wait for that to happen and then reenter the keyword(s). This can be painfully slow for a large batch of files. I've often resorted to manually writing a metadata template in Wordpad an appending the template. It needs to be easier than that.

The IPTC metadata needs a large amount of work across all the Adobe product line.
    Desired Functions:
(1)The identical fields/names and consistent characteristics across all products that generate end-user files; for example, Audition (audio), Acrobat (PDF), Photoshop (image), video products and so on. Audition 1.5 still carries the RIFF metadata but no IPTC format data. Acrobat 7.0.7 Pro does have some IPTC like data fields but has a major data integrity problem with the Description field data. In Photoshop CS2, I can utilize CR/LF via "Enter" to make the presentation more readable as separate paragraphs or new line items. In the Acrobat "Description" field I can follow the same procedure and all looks good upon entry. I do a Save and then bring up the IPTC Description data (same file) and all the data after the first CR (Enter) is lost! Never received any error or warning message.
    (2) I think this pertains mostly to generation of PDF files. Currently, when I generate a PDF document having the same location/file-name that I designate for the "new" file, I appropriately get the warning about the "same name". In addition, give me the option to have the metadata in the "old" file copied to the "new" file.
    (3) Publish (at least in the Help function) all the idiosyncracies for each field (e.g., can I not do CR/LF functions?) and the maximum number of characters possible in each field. Please don't reference me to some standard for the information....tell me what the product line supports! In addition, generate warning messages if I do something outside the field support at the time I am entering data in the field. When possible include such information alongside the field window. One example of this is the note below the keyword window about the comma seperator. The problem with this particular comment is that is states "the comma MAY be used as a separator". Don't tell me what MAY be used...tell me what CAN be used (e.g., spaces, semi-colon, etc.).
    (4) Major update required in the Help function for metadata. Right now it is very poor and not of much use.

  • Metadata Auto fill edit

I have created some "custom" metadata sets using some user created fields. However I have previously made a spelling error (in a long entry!) and although I seem to have deleted all incorrectly spelt metadata from my images I really would like to delete the incorrect spelling from the autofill library, wherever that is.
I have searched the edit IPTC autofill from the meta data drop down menu and cannot find it - only the "non custom" fields are listed.
    Any help greatly appretiated!
    Steven

Ok, half way there. I downloaded an app called Pref Setter to edit the preferences by deleting the array strings that I no longer needed.
Also you can adjust the hierarchy of the auto completion data. I found that helpful with the copyright field since they all start off the same.
Need to still find a way to have the data automatically entered from a default setting, with out having to start typing.

  • IPhoto9 messes up metadata/exif

I have a couple of annoyances with iPhoto9 and I would like either to fix them or to know if these problems are fixed in iPhoto11.
    - I set it to not copy the photos to the iPhoto library.
    - I import the photos from folders, with automatic split into events off. Thus it creates on event per folder.
    My problems are
    1. Wrong metadata, random behavior.  For example, I have a folder with pics and videos taken in 2009, one subfolder for each month.  Thus iPhoto9 creates one event per month. Problem is some events have the correct date, some have a 1903 date.  After some investigation, I figured out that the culprit are some of the AVIs. I suspect that because the corresponding JPEG thumbnails have a 1903 date.
Now, all the pictures and videos in that folder came from the same camera.  All JPEGs have the correct exif. Not sure how to check the exif of AVIs, "show movie inspector" doesn't show it.  The weird thing is only some of the AVIs that are screwed up.
    2. It randomly decides that some pictures need to be modified, but I did not tell it to modify anything. I just created a new library, and imported the pictures. I see some random JPEGs in the iPhoto Library/Modified folder. They look the same as the original JPEGs, except smaller or bigger.  Most pictures are not modified.
    3. It also modifies ALL pictures taken by iPhone 3GS and 4.  Originals 3GS pics are about 1.7M each, iPhone4 about 2.5M. The modified ones are 1.9M.
Now, 1 seems like a AVI, not an iPhoto problem. Can I set the date on a AVI?  I seem to be able to do it if I import the AVI in iMovie11, but I would like a simpler solution.  2 and 3 however seem to be an iPhoto9 problem.  Anyway to fix them?
    Thanks in advance

Typically this is very simple - your camera has an autorotate feature and you do not understand what that does - it sets a flag telling the viewer to rotate the photo - iPhoto does that and this creates a modified version
    3. It also modifies ALL pictures taken by iPhone 3GS and 4.  Originals 3GS pics are about 1.7M each, iPhone4 about 2.5M. The modified ones are 1.9M.
Again I have not seen this - nor am I likely to since I do not go into my iPhoto library - doing so is uncessary and dangerous

  • Map Module annoyances

I've been using the Map Module quite a bit to add GPS co-ords to old pictures taken before I began tracking my locations via GPS--so I have no tracklogs to use, otherwise I'd just use Jeffrey's plug-in.  In my use of the Map Module I've come across a few annoyances and wonder if any other users have experienced any of them and/or knows of a 'fix'.
My typical work flow is to select a few--up to a few hundred--photos using a filter in the Library module or at times a smart collection.  I then activate the Map Module and select multiple images taken at the same location and drag those images to the map to geo-encode them.  The geo-encoding goes well and most of the 'Time and Place' fields are set with the text being light grey.  The text for the GPS value is set to full brightness.
    The 'annoyances':
    1.  For the 'Time and Place' metadata to become 'active' each item (City, State/Province, etc.) label must be clicked on and the current greyed location selected by clicking on the proper value in the pop-up that appears when the label is clicked.  The problem is that if I have more than a few images selected--so I can set the 'Time and Place' information for all of them at once--after entering the first item, say for example City, all of the entries will go blank for a few seconds and then re-appear with City now non-grey and active.  Sometimes the other entries remain greyed out and sometimes they totally disappear and I have to remember the spelling, etc., of the blank item and manually type it in for the pop-up does not always contain the entry that disappeared.  Sometimes this 'flashing' of the metadata fields happens more than once per entry. Major annoyance.
    2.  When manually entering an entry because it became blank when setting a different field the metadata entries will blank out while I am typing and the characters I am typing are then interpreted as command characters for LR proper, not as entries in the text box I'm trying to type into.  This is not acceptable behavior.  Sometimes the sequence of letters when interpreted as commands to LR can really muck things up.
In 1&2 it is as if the program is writing the changed data to the catalog for every image.  While this write operation is taking place the data in the right panel is blanked and the focus changed from an item in the right panel to the main LR window.
One other observation, since LR 4.0 was released with the Map Module I've had a few dozen crashes.  Every single one of them has happened while working in the Map Module.  I've never had LR 4.x crash at any other time.
It is my belief that the Map Module is poorly written and in need of major bug fixes.
My system is a mid-2010 27" i7 iMac @ 2.93 GHz and 16 GB DRAM.  I have over 600 GB remaining on my system drive.  My raw cache files reside on an external drive connected via FW800 which has over 1.5TB free.  I am using Lion (OS X 10.7.3) and the system was installed fresh, not an update from Snow Leopard.
    Ideas anyone?

    jim01403 wrote:
I'm currently doing something similar, and I too noticed the weird behaviour when trying to 'commit' the location entries in the Map module. They way I now do it (with all photographs in the filmstrip) is click on one of the placemarks on the map, this will automatically select all the images with that same location. Jump to Library (all the selected photographs stay selected, although they may not all appear in the grid....but 'most' selected will), use the metadata panel to 'commit' (or amend) the location data for the most selected image, then sync metadata (location data only). This updates all the selected images with the same location. Return to Map and pick another placemark and repeat.
Thanks for the input.  This usually 'works' but sometimes doesn't.  When it doesn't the flash occurs even in the Library module.  However, it is much better than trying to do it in the Map Module with all images selected.
Note that the Map Module also has a 'Sync Metadata' button so it isn't necessary to return to the Library Module.  Selecting a single image from the group, commit it, then click on the icon to select all images followed by clicking on the Sync Metadata button.
It is still an anoyance and makes the software seem to be somewhat less than a 'Professional' level application.  I hope Adobe can find and fix these kinds of issues, but I won't hold my breath as I'm sure they have more pressing issues to solve.

  • Aperture ignores edits to Autofill - sticky copyright date

Last year, I used Aperture 3 to add a 2010 copyright notice to my images. This field autofilled when the import window was opened, which was nice - I didn't have to type in the copyright every time. I've been trying to change the copyright to 2011, of course. No matter what I do, it always autofills with the 2010 copyright. I now have to edit the date for every import, which is especially annoying because Aperture crashes EVERY fifth shot or so when I shoot tethered (I continue to harangue Apple about this-grrrr) so I'm constantly importing.
I tried using Edit Autofill List, and did successfully remove the 2010 copyright text from there, or so I thought, but Aperture still autofills with 2010. I smell a trip to the preference trash heap in my future...is there a way to trash only some preferences? I don't want to lose my precious keyword groups and button presets, which took a long time to set up. Any thoughts?

    Solved!
For the benefit of any other confused souls out there, the Import window's field called Copyright Notice is NOT autofilling, which makes complete sense now that I think about it. This field populates from whatever you type into the field called "Copyright" in the metadata presets you set up specifically for import, as Kirby pointed out. My mistake was forgetting that these import presets act differently from the custom metadata views you can set up for your Metadata inspector (panel on the left), which do Autofill. The import presets input "hard" information that you type in to suit your needs. Typing in the correct copyright into the Metadata Presets/Edit/IPTC Status/Copyright field solved my problem. Yea!
So the Edit Autofill List function does allow you to edit the IPTC copyright field among many others, but it will have no effect on import metadata. Editing Autofill entries could be helpful if you have an imported photo with no copyright and you want to type one in. Aperture will autofill for you, but if you have copyrights from more than one year, it might autofill the wrong one. So Aperture lets you remove any autofill data you don't want. Now I understand!
One little mistake Apple could correct is that the copyright field names are inconsistent. The import panel's IPTC field name is "Copyright Notice" - the pesky one that kept showing me last year's copyright. When you edit or make new Import metadata presets, they call this same field "Copyright" - the editing of which solved my problem. Which isn't a big deal, but in trying to correct my problem with Edit Autofill List, the IPTC field is called "Copyright Notice," same name as my problem field. Same inconsistency with metadata custom views, as well. The way I learned it, distinct field name means distinct field. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. Confusing, no?
Thanks to Kirby for solving my problem - I send you a virtual chocolate chip cookie. Make that a dozen if you can solve my tethered crashing problem
