Metadata On Mac's

Hi Apple Users. I feel like I'm behind enemy lines... but I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
I'm an I.S Tech at a company in New York, and have recently been delegated to be the "Mac Guy," even though I come from a totally Windows background. My company does a lot of dvd authoring and graphic design, all done on macs. We store these video files on removable media.
I have figured out the way for the PC's and Macs to talk over our Server 2003 network (see each other, share files...). We are using a disk cataloging software that can see the Mac drives and document the files that are on them. However, my problem lies in the fact that a) I cannot find the tools to edit the metadata of any file on a mac, and b) When windows looks at this metadata, it cannot see things like comments, author and other important fields like that.
Does anyone have any suggestions that would help me out?
Thanks guys! (FYI, I could be falling in love with OSX...)

The problem is not getting the data, as they are all media files. The problem is getting the data about the data... the metadata about the files.
I've looked at software as my last option, but still have yet to find any software that will do what I want- edit the meta data in a Macintosh based file, then have the meta data survive when I transfer the file from the Macintosh to a PC.
Thanks!

  • Original photo files and metadata - PSE10 mac

I just copied some .jpg files that were previously imported into a PSE8 organizer on my pc to my mac.  Previously, the photos within the organizer were tagged in PSE8 on the pc.
I imported the .jpg files onto my mac for use within PSE10.  Upon import, a dialogue box asked if I would like to import keyword tags as well as the files.
Are keyword tags "written" into the original files?  Are there hidden files or is the metadata witten into the original file?  I always was under the impression that PSE was non destructive to the original .jpg files?
    Thanks in advance

Theoretically the tags only exist in the catalog, not in the files, unless you do something to cause it to be added to the files. As it happens, one of the activities that causes them to get written to the files is sending a file to the editor.

  • Improved Metadata Handling?

    The 1.1 PDF states:
    Improved Metadata Handling
Mac OS X v10.4.6 includes support for EXIF metadata when exporting TIFF files with Aperture. You can view the EXIF information in exported TIFF files using other image editing applications, such as Adobe Photoshop.
OK, when I use Open with External Editor, I see the EXIF data in Photoshop (namely the IPTC) but when I instead use the Export command to a TIFF, no data. Bug?

Like William Lloyd posted earlier, I am not able to replicate this problem, at least on my PowerMac G5. Tried exporting the same image, loaded with IPTC data, in 16-bit and 8-bit TIF and PSD. Got the same results in all exports -- all the IPTC data showed up in Bridge Metadata panel and Photoshop Info window for all four images. Shoot only Canon Raw.
Wonder if there is a source data to output data bug specific to a camera make/model? Perhaps if the posters who are having this problem can state the source image type (camera make/model/file type) we can see if there is a pattern.

  • How important is a dedicated metadata controller?

    Hello,
I'm currently setting up a computational cluster consisting of 16 XServes (eventually 32) and 5 Mac Pros, each of which need to simultaneously write to a single volume on a shared 10TB Promise VTrak RAID. My motivation for using XSan is data integrity and redundancy (which is critical) and not speed (which is nice, but not necessary).
For this type of setup, how important is it to have a dedicated metadata controller? Ideally, I'd like to have one XServe as a dedicated controller for both XGrid and metadata, the Mac Pros as XGrid clients and agents, and the remaining XServes as XGrid agents. Everything I read says that there will be "decreased performance" if the metadata controller is used for functions other than XSan, but what exactly is this decreased performance? I can live with some latency in data access while the metadata controller is doing other things, provided all data gets written eventually. There will be no other traffic (mail, web, etc) on this network.
I know the first thought is that with so many machines, why not just use one as a dedicated metadata controller? Again, data access isn't the primary goal here; each machine performing computations takes about a day off my computation time so I want every available asset working towards that goal. Even if I have to wait five minutes to access the data, I'm still way ahead of the game using the other machine for computations.
In the event that using a dedicated metadata controller is vital to using XSan in this situation, are there other solutions which would perhaps better suit my needs?

The question really is 'how important is the reliability of your Xsan' and because its become a single shared resource everything depends on it, this is the same in post or data centre workflows.
The ideal situation is to have no other services pulling any clock cycles from the processor because it could coincide with xsan requiring resources. The tricky thing in xsan deployment is latency reduction, the controllers and switches don't look busy and they aren't but the smooth running of the system depends on that reduced latency and when you lose it your going to run into some strange and probably intermittent problems.
Ive cut corners in the past by running open directory and DNS on the backup controller but never on the primary. Really it depends how busy the whole system is going to get but dont expect Xsan to behave simply when the latency starts to go. Its a very robust file system but it wont slow down in a linear way like a busy web server it will slow then hiccup stop, start or fall over entirely, which is not good in a critical situation.
One solution Ive used in a similar situation is a smalltree 6 port ethernet card in an xserve with all ports bound together, make sure your switch can handle link aggregation but it creates a nice big pipe to a fileshare in a situation where xsan wont work. You can't edit video like this but you can remove the server bottleneck when you have several client computers requiring big file transfers.
Another route is iSCSI but its still early days in the Apple world, ATTO now make an iSCSI initiator for Macs but I can say Ive deployed it.

  • Image Attachments Won't Open in Windows

    Hello,
I'm having some frequently recurring problems sending images (usually JPEG) to Windows users.
For instance, I'll create in Mail an email with two image attachements and send them to a group that includes some Mac folks and some Windows users.
The Mac people have no trouble viewing the images. The Windows users usually write back and say "Try sending again. All I'm seeing is Red X's."
I keep the "Send Windows Frendly Attachments" box clicked. What more can I do?
    Thank you!

Hate to disagree with howwow, but the Windows Friendly option has nothing to do with the issue of apparent embedding, when that appears. When you use Rich Text, and when the fonts are mixed, and also include attachments, Mail changes the Rich Text to HTML and to SOME recipients the images will appear to be embedded, and will be problematic. It can also change the "status" of attachments enough that Mail will treat them a little differently. The most common sources of mixed fonts when using Rich Text is text included when forwarding or replying, and from a Signature.
Windows friendly functions to remove or alter the metadata that Macs save with image files, and with word documents, including the resource fork. These factors can confuse some Windows base mail clients, although probably NOT those that are kept up-to-date. We once saw the frequent use of an application named GrimRipper just to remove Resource Forks.
The reason the support articles say Windows Friendly may be bad when sending to some Mac users, is that very early operating systems on Macs needed the Resource Fork to know how to open certain files, and could not rely upon only the extension, as Windows does, and OSX can do.
Other metadata that can create problems with SOME Windows mail clients include a Mac style thumbnail. This problem could also be solved by saving a JPEG as Web Ready, or telling the photo application to use no Thumbnail or preview. The EXIF data from digital cameras falls into the category of metadata -- this being the source of date, time, camera settings, etc. that can learned from each photo downloaded from a digital camera -- if included in the format choses by your Mac, that could create a problem.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I am using xmlParser and xmlDom to extract information from xml document. My whole process works perfectly in the APPS schema on the Oracle e-Business Suite. The minute I move it to a custom schema (ie new User) I get this error.

  • Read-only access when saving metadata to file from Adobe Lightroom on a MAC OS to Windows shared drive

We have a group of 5 people editing and indexing photos to a shared drive on a windows server, everyone has its own catalog and working on different folders to avoid any locking conflicts.
The windows computers don't have any problems but the Mac's don't write the updated metadata to all files because they get the message "Photos have read-only access".
    The environment is the following:
    2x Macs workstations running:
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    - iMAC with MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    3x Windows Workstations:
    - Windows 7
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    Server:
    - Shared drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard
I have searched the internet, no one has this problem with this exact setup but I have tried all the solutions I found, namely:
    1. Connect to the network drive with cifs:// protocol
    2. Change the settings of the nsmb.conf for 'smb1_only' protocol
    3. Mount the drive manually by command line
    Nothing worked, any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issue and wonder if Lightroom 6 will resolve it.  I  tried AFP, SMB2, SMB3 and they all failed to save metadata randomly. When I use NFS from OS X then it works fine but it's a little slower than SMB and it's not as native as the mount via AFP or SMB, so it's harder to maintain.     My server is a FreeNAS 9.2 (FreeBSD) which is running Samba, Netatalk and native NFS.

  • Transferring photos/videos from Mac to PC...while preserving metadata

In short, I need to move my media collection (music, movies, photos, etc) off from my macbook pro and on to my windows server (Win 7) due to hard drive space limitations. I'm afraid that if/when I transfer all of my media over to the NTFS storage drive located on my Win7 machine, I'll lose all of the metadata attached to each picture/video, you know...all the dates, times, places, etc. Will this data actually be lost? Any recommendations aside from keeping it on an HFS+ drive? For what it's worth, much of it has been taken via iPhone. Additionally, I'm finding that I'm running in to more trouble actually transferring it. Is there a good application to do this? (CCC failed out, the manual copy/paste failed too.)

Barbara-- I just found an answer on a previous thread that seems to work-- dragging the jpgs on the mac from their folder onto the desktop, and then from there on to the thumb drive.  I still get the two forks, but the main one opens.  Question: (unless you know a better way to go that doesn't create this)-- is there any reason not to delete the data fork?  It seems to open fine when it is deleted.

  • CS6 Mac- How to disable metadata from showing in web gallery???

Does anyone have a way to stop metadata from displaying in my web gallery main image display? I am trying to create a simple html web gallery of some images from within Bridge output module. Thumbnails look ok, but when I click on one and get the large image, at the bottom of the page it is displaying all sorts of info that I don't want showing!
There does not seem to be any way of turning this off.
    I am on a mac 10.9.5, Bridge CS6
    Your help appreciated.
    Jonathan

    Hi Philip,
Thanks so much for you reply.
I think part of my problem is that I was working from Nikon RAW files and converting those to a web gallery. It's been a while since I made a gallery in Bridge, but as I recall now I used to shoot RAW + JPG and use the jpg images for output to web gallery.
I just did this your way and it worked fine. I never used the Export menu before. Does it automatically default to JPG? I don't see any options to do tiff, PSD etc. Obviously jpg is what I need for web, but wondered if output file kind could be changed in export somewhere. I suppose this is what Actions are for. Adobe could make this simpler by having a check-box in the Web output that gives the option of including metadata or not.
Anyway thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. Been hitting my head against the wall about this.

  • Shortcut-Bug in Bridge CS6 for Mac / Bridge cant' copy and paste metadata

The cmd-keys / shortcuts doesn't work in the file info panel btw. in the xmp / iptc fields (e.g. cmd+c, cmd+v, ...) of Adobe Bridge CS6 (Mac OS 10.6.8 and 10.7.3). You are not able to cut and paste info from one box to another like previous versions.
This bug only appears in the file info window (opened via alt+i) in Bridge CS6 - if you edit information or metadata in the file info panel in Photoshop CS6, the shortcuts or copy and paste from one field to another works.
The shortcuts also work under Windows (tested under Vista).
I noticed this minor bug already one in the Photoshop CS6 Beta more than one months ago. I hoped that this was corrected in the official test version, but unfortunately it is not. Although it is a minor bug, it is IMHO a basic function and would be very helpful in my daily work. Bridge CS6 and ACR 7 are very good and meet my expect ions or needs - it is too bad, that such a small thing is making working with the application a little bit annoying.
It would be nice, if you could forward this to Adobe engineers that they can fix it.
    Thanks so much!

Thanks! If there is a workaround or simple solution, I would be very glad if you could inform me.
