Metadata&Smart playlist/playlist folders freezing malfunction

This problem started pretty soon after I updated to the latest version of Itunes (11.1)
So, I'm going to try to word this in a way that isn't confusing... but the problem is with smart playlists in playlist folders that are then within another playlist folder. Or I guess it's simpler to say... playlists within playlist subfolders.
For example
Folder: Classical
Subfolder: Mozart
Playlist 1 - concertos
Playlist 2 - symphonies
etc
So, what is happening is that if you try to edit any song's metadata in a smart playlist within a subfolder of a folder, itunes freezes immediately.
If I move the smart playlist out of the subfolder and into the main folder, I am able to edit metadata without any freezing or other problems.
This really doesn't make sense to me... any help out there?

I don't have the bandwidth for iCloud integration for AppleTV, but since my local smart playlists were getting it wrong, I kind of freaked out. I fixed it, though, by moving my iTunes Library.itl from my last working clone of ML to the iTunes folder on my Mavericks installation.
I had updated only a few items since it stopped working correctly, and I had nothing to lose, as AppleTV without properly ordered playlists is basically a sleek hokey puck. I don't know why I break down and finally post the issue here after days of hand-wringing and tears of blood only to then try the one thing I hadn't thought to try before.
If anyone else is having trouble with the smart playlists not ordering properly on Apple TV, maybe this will help. Try replacing the ITL and XML files.

  • Organized iPod playlists into folders in iTunes, but not showing up when iPod is disconnected. Please help!

I organized my iPod touch playlists into folders in iTunes on my computer (while my iPod was connected to my computer) but when I disconnect and go to use the iPod separately, the playlists that I organized do not show up in the folders they were put into. They're still all jumbled up, rather than in the playlist folders. The folders show up on my iPod, but some are empty and some have a few but not all of the correct playlists in them. How can I fix this?

PLease note that you cannot organise ipod playlists or folders while it is NOT connected to iTunes, as you simply can't see them.
    Yes you can.
If I'm not mistaken, this thread was started prior to the release of iTunes 11. iTunes 11 does "hide" Playlists and Playlist Folders, until you turn the Sidebar back on, using CTRL+S. Also, the top menu bar is useful, and that can be turned on with CTRL+B. However, that aside, nothing has changed regarding Playlists, You can (and have always been able to) create, alter and manage Playlists without having an iPod connected to iTunes. You then allow a Sync to synchronise those Playlists to the iPod.
    So use CTRL+B and CTRL+S and make sure you have the top menu and the sidebar showing, like so;
Notice the Playlist Folder, that I've named "Test Folder". Inside it is a Smart Playlist ("Rating 1 star") and two regular Playlists ("Dummy list, do not use" & "Test list"). To create new ones of any of these items, click on the + symbol at the bottom of the iTunes Window (I've ringed it). You then see this:
So that sorts out creating and managing them in your iTunes Library.

It looks like ipod doesn't have a folder function which is unhelpful and user unfriendly.
That's not correct. At least, not as far as the Playlist Folders we have been discussing.
    Once the Playlists are Synced to the iPod, looking in the Playlists section on my iPod Touch, shows this;
Notice the "Playlist Folder" (named Test Folder) on the list. Delving into that shows the three Playlists that we saw in iTunes. Notice the name of the Playlist Folder at the top, and the three Playlists in it, listed below (in alphabetical order):
One thing that may be of further use to you; while arranging my iPod to get the screenshots, I found that it took two attempts to get the Playlists fully Synced with my iPod (I use "Sync selected playlists" with it). So if your first Sync doesn't put everything onto your iPod, try a second Sync.

  • Can I create a smart podcast playlist for my iPod?

I'm trying to find a way to create a smart podcast playlist that will work on my iPod. I'm able to do this in iTunes, but when I sync my iPod, the playlists don't transfer. Right now I've got two playlists in a new folder, and I can't even find the folder under my playlists tab in my iPod.
I've seen some pretty lengthy work-arounds that require you to create a separate playlist for each podcast, and then combining all of those playlists together into a new playlist. But it can't be that complicated, can it?

Thank, that took care of it. I guess I just assumed that I'd be able to organize podcasts in the folders under the Playlist tab. It's weird that it won't let us do that.

  • Playlists with folders - doesn't work

    Brandnew iPod 30 GB, 5.5
Do have playlists with folders on iTunes 7.0.2. Folders don't appear on the iPod. Only the files in the folders. So i get a long long list of playlists on the iPod. Instead of a list with several folders in it for better overview.
    Any hints? Thank you.

    But why?
You could do it in the past.
Software bug? Will there be a fix in the future?

  • ITunes problems in Lion: Can't drag playlists to folders or to burn lists.

  • I have my playlists in folders in itunes and suddenly I can't open the folders anymore?

I organise all my playlists into folders on itunes on my laptop (windows) and today I can't open or close any of the folders to acces the playlists!!!!! Can anyone help?

Since in iPhoto folders do not hold photos but hold other folders or albums there is a good chance of confusion here - are you speaking of albums or events?
In general you select photos  by clicking on one and depressing the command key and clicking on additional photos --  or probably easier selecting oen photo and creating an album and then dragging additional photos to that album - once you have what you want to send collected open the album and select all and e-mail them

  • Cannot add playlists to folders in iphone 5 / itunes for mac

Does anyone know why one cannot add playlists to folders in iphone 5. When I drag a playlist to a folder on my "Devices" on my iMac in itunes 10 it does not show up on my phone after it syncs. I should note that I currently have 3 folders with playlists which show up on my iphone but I believe these were generated when I first Automatically Synced Music before I switched to Manually Manage Music

Also can this be done for photos?

  • Is there a way to export Itunes library including playlists into folders?

Hey, i have quite a large library with over 100 playlists some playlists themselves in playlist folders
Is it possible to export all playlists (Including playlist folders) into folders and for them to keep there structure?
    For example
    Playlist folder
    "Best playlists"
         "Playlist1"
         "Playlist 2"
         "Playlist 3"
    "Other Playlists"
         "Playlist 1"
         "Playlist 2"
         Playlist 3"
So i would get a folder with "Best playlists" then 3 folders inside with "Playlist 1, 2, 3" etc.
Of course i want the music inside as well
Maybe there is a script that will do it?

  • ITunes (11 I think) in smart playlists and folders won't apply the "Last Played" search criteria in real time.  Please fix!!!

The major iTunes recent makeover, generally *****.
It's ugly to look at; it's grey and blue-grey and more grey.  god, how drab can you get.  You know how in the Finder we can assign colors to files, folders & applications.  It would be fantastic to be able to do that to playlists and the folders of playlists within iTunes.  Please add some color!  And/Or let us choose the color format for our personal copy of iTunes, like some browsers do.
But more importantly I have some rather sophisticated smart playlists; many of which source other (smart) playlists & folders of playlists in my collection.  With this current iTunes makeover (iTunes version 11 I think), they screwed something up.  None of my smart playlists will apply in real time the "Last Played" search criteria.  This is very annoying.  Please, please fix it.
And how about the ability to duplicate a playlist, to make new playlist.  Not to have two of the same playlists, but so the second one can then be edited to something similar to the first (as opposed to having to build a new similar sophisticated playlist from scratch).  This would save a lot of time in some cases.

  • Playlists in folders not in same order on iPod as in iTunes

I use iTunes version 11.01 on Mac system 10.6.8. I have iPod classic 2.0.4
I have created playlist folders which contain playlists in certain order. When I synch iPod, the order within playlist folder changes as follows:
Playlists names containing numbers which I want in numberical order such as "song 1" "song 2"....."song 10 "song 11" are resorted on iPod as
    "song 1" "song 11" "song 12" ......"song 19" "song 2" etc...
So if there is a number in the title it does not keep standard numberical order but first sorts by all numbers with first character as "1" and then does the same for "2". In other words it would count and sort sequence of playlist titles having name song x where x is 1 throught 25 as:
    1/10/11/12/13/14/15/17/18/19/2/20/21/22/23/24/25
How do I get it to leave the order in the logical order? Do I need to call them 01/02/03 etc...

Once you've created a Playlist folder within the iTunes Source list, you should be able to drag folders, playlists, or smart playlists within them without issue. Make sure that when you're dragging playlists into the folder, you're actually dropping the playlist onto the folder, and not the Smart Playlist.
Also, regarding your question about tagging artwork. I would suggest selecting all the tracks in the album, go to File > Get Info. This will allow you to edit the song details for the entire album at once. You'll notice that there's a box for Artwork, just drag in the artwork into that box and you should be good to go.
    Good luck.

  • Making playlists from folders...

Hello all. I have a hard drive full of many gigs of music. Its all arranged in folders by type of music and then by the name of the artist and then the name of the album of the artist. I need to find a way for automatically creating itunes playlists based on what the name of the folder that contains the music. I can't use the common method of arranging the music into smart playlists by genre, artist, etc, because most of my MP3 tag data is incomplete or missing. I could do this manually, one at a time, by dragging and dropping music into playlists that I create, but doing this for five hundred albums would take all day. Is there a way that playlists can be generated automatically for me? I can't be the first person to try and do this. Thanks in advance.

The easiest way I know of to create a playlist of music is to:
    1) create a new playlist folder in the left column
    2) select the library at the top of the list in the left column
    3) drag songs from the library into the new playlist folder
To make the process easier, after selecting the library you can sort by genre or artist name, or you can perform a search. This makes it easier to find the specific songs you want to add to your playlist.

  • Can't drag playlists into folders anymore.

I am using iTunes 10.4. Have approx. 25,850 songs organized into folders and sub-folders. I have organized this way for years. Today, I am unable to drag any playlist into any folder. What happened?

I use Wacom Intuos3 and have just had the same issue. All my playlists have disappeared and I can no longer drag and drop tunes. Also discovered it's a Wacom/Apple issue - but I have no idea why it has happened all of a sudden. Have posted a separate question.
Hope all works out for you soon - I thought playlists for 7,000+ tunes was a lot...

  • Converting Formats to Playlists or Folders

I talked to an Apple Support tech about converting files directly to a playlist or folder without going into the Ipod Library. They said I could. Unfortunely my 90 day complimentary Support had run out. So I'm summitting my question to the forum. I want to add my files into a playlist, convert them in the same playlist. I want to do this so I don't have to look thru 4000 files in my iTunes Library. I have an attachmement enclosed.  Thanks!

I'll be curious to see if someone replies with an easy method to do this. Because as you know, iTunes puts the converted files in the main Library.
You could search thru Doug's Applescripts for a solution
Or with an extra step on your part you could create a Smart Playlist. For the songs you want to convert, Get Info and add a comment like "convert to mp3.  Then create a Smart Playlist to look something like this.  Of course this is not as simple a solution as you're looking for, but might be a temporary solution.
