Metadata, such as captions, readable by other programs?
I need to organize a large number of historical photographs which have all been scanned. If I caption them with the information that I have for each, does that information remain in iphoto only, or if I send that photo to someone else does the info remain with the file? Can that information be read by other photo software? If not, is there some other software system which does that? For some of the photos, I have a .pdf document that goes along with a group of photos identifying buildings and people but I'd like something that is right with each photo, basically the equivalent of writing on the back of a photo. Sorry if this is an extremely basic question. I'm coming at this from a history background, not a photo background.
does that information remain in iphoto only
Paula, are you asking about Aperture or iPhoto? This is the Aperture Forum .
In Aperture you can export all those metadata tags, that are part of the IPICT standard export along with the image (write into the image file), and other Applications will be able to read it, see this article on IPICT Meta Data:
Photo Meta Data: http://www.iptc.org/IPTC4XMP/
If you export a version of your image, the IPICT will be included; if you export the original masters, you can specify so in the export dialogue. You can also write the meta data to an IPICT sidecar file, see the link above.
What you can specify with the IPICT data you see, if you set the selector in the Metadata Tab of the Inspector panel to "IPICT Core".

Line Breaks missing in captions from other programs...
I've spent the last few hours searching around, and I've been unable to find any solution to a weird thing I noticed.
I've recently purchased LR 3.4.1 and when I imported a handful of older pics that had had the captions set using Bridge, the line breaks were now gone.
I then went to Bridge and tested it, and sure enough, it can read line breaks from LR, but the opposite doesn't seem to be true. As part of my work, I get a bunch of photos that other photogs have shot and added captions to via Bridge, but I can't seem to find any check box or setting on how to get LR to read the line breaks.
Any one have any advice on how to get LR to read line breaks from other programs? I'd hate to have to go through and re-caption each and every single photo, especially when adding the older ones into LR to use it as a DAM.
Thanks! This is a long-standing, annoying bug in Windows LR that has been acknowledged by Adobe:
http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/newline_bug_in_caption_text
Please go to the feedback site and vote for that issue to get fixed.
It is just a display problem in LR -- the line breaks in the metadata are preserved, and if you enter line breaks in the metadata, they are preserved too. -
What's the difference and purpose of Keywording and metadata such as title and caption etc?
What's the difference and purpose of Keywording and metadata such as title and caption, crator, sublocation , label etc? Where & how is the information used? Where does it appear?
Keywording is primarily for your own use for finding photos fast.
Title, Caption, etc are also for your own use but can be used by your clients or your stock company if you do not <Minimize Embedded Metadata> on export. Keywords are also included on export but are hardly of any use to others - unless you follow a standard for keywording.
You have the option of selecting title, caption, etc to appear in a Slide Show, on Print, or on a webpage created with LR.
If you go to the LR Help menu and type "title", or "caption" in the search box you will find plenty of advice for this.

How do you reset the dlsmusic device or make it visible in order for other programs such as Sibelius or Finale be able to use it?
I figured out that if you remove the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file and restart, that restores the keyboard.
Second question: Is there any way to make F4 (without holding fn) bring up Dashboard on Lion that doesn't require FunctionFlip? If it matters, I have a Time Machine backup of the symbolichotkeys.plist file from when I had the older keyboard. -
iPhoto constantly keeps dropping out. Other programs do at times but iPhoto drops out constantly. Does anyone know what causes this?
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Metadata not populating captions
I'd really appreciate some help with this problem... I want to set up a page of thumbnails and then display a selection of information from the metadata as a caption below each one. This has worked well in the past, but now only the info re the lens used (and any text I add in the captions text boxes) shows. I've tried re-inserting the images ensuring I'm using the 'place' command, re-linked the image, triple checked that the metadata is there (as it shows in photoshop, Bridge and in the image info itself) - but still nothing.
What's really wierd is that if i open a previous document (that worked), delete the captions and then re-generate static or live captions, it's all fine....but when I do the same thing using the same image with the same metadata and properly linked in my NEW document, it just won't do it! Though the caption set-up is the same etc. The only thing I can think of is that my new Iddesign document is 'faulty' in some way, or the programme itself is having a bad day??
I just can't work out what I'm missing, so any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.Well I have good news and strange news. The good news is that when I linked the image file you posted to the file you posted, I was able to make your live captions work perfectly. I could also generate static captions and they worked as well. This suggested to me that you don't have a problem with your InDesign file per se or necessarily your image files. I opened your photo in Photoshop and Bridge (both CS5.5 versions) and was able to see the metadata that you wanted to include in your live captions in both programs the same as you were.
So, what's the problem then and why does it work for me and not you? I am running CS5.5 on a Mac. It may simply be the difference between CS5.5 and CS5. However, this is where things get strange. I thought I'd see if I could re-create your results. When I opened your photo in Photoshop and re-saved it as a JPG and/or a TIF I found that the EXIF metadata was removed (correction - not "removed" from the JPG or TIF file, but removed from view in InDesign) and the live and static captions no longer functioned. All other types of metadata (or so I assume, admittedly I didn't test absolutely everything) seemed to be intact. So, as you noted, your problem does seem to lie with the EXIF metadata. Just to be sure it wasn't a strange glitch with your photo, I pulled up a few of my own photos downloaded and untouched from my camera. Completely untouched images came through into InDesign with EXIF metadata intact and coming into the live/static captions correctly. Images manipulated in any way, including saved straight from the Camera Raw dialog as JPG or TIF formats lost their EXIF metadata.
A couple of potential solutions/thoughts...and perhaps someone else can build on this. There are some scripts out there and/or plugins that people have created to deal with the EXIF metadata issue. Looking around a bit, this one by Phil Harvey seems to be pretty popular, though I'm afraid I can't personally vouch for it: http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/index.html This isn't the only tool out there though, so if it's not the one for you, keep looking.
The fact that your photo worked for me in CS5.5 makes me think that there is a possibility that your photo was saved in a way that didn't remove the EXIF metadata and/or the metadata was still readable by CS5.5. If this is a feature you will be taking advantage of a lot it might be worth updating InDesign to a newer version, but keeping your photo processing method the same until you know that Adobe has worked out this problem.
And the low-tech, but most annoying process would be to manually copy and paste the metadata you want to show up in your live captions into "stand in" unused categories in another section of your metadata. For instance take the "ISO Speed" and put it in the "Description" category. If you used the same lens, film speed, camera, etc. for a batch of photos you could build a metadata template that could fill in most of the data for you. Really not the optimal solution, but better than not having it work at all. I'll let you know if I run across something better! -
I have not downloaded anything recently. I cannot think of anything out of the ordinary that I have done recently on my computer, either.
Every time I open Safari, it either crashes or freezes. Other programs, such as photobooth, iphoto, and firefox have also frozen. The only ways I can get them to go away, even after force quit, is by holding down the power key.
I'm hoping it's nothing serious, as I have a lot of big projects I need my computer for right now.. but can you possibly help me diagnose this??
I am trying to find the report from the last crash to attach to this, but I cannot locate it.. and Safari is frozen, so I cannot currently get a new one.
Please help!Thank you for replying! I really really appreciate it!

Print at "contact" sheet with metadata as the caption?
I need to produce catalog sheets of photo libraries that contain the metadata as a caption, i.e. this might be in the form of, say, 4 photos per page, but each having the associated metadata in some way attached to the photo. I haven't found a way to do that in PS5 directly so I'm wondering if there might be a plug in for something like that. Even a separate proofing, contact, or similar software that would achieve the same purpose would work. Anyone know of such a thing?

How open images from other programs & convert to tiff?
I am new to digital photography. I usually take 2 to 3 MB images with my Canon Rebel XT and use iPhoto as my basic program to organize images, create albums, and do very basic editing. I'm running on a G4 Powerbook with OS10.3. I expect to upgrade to iPhoto6 soon. I also use Canon's Image Browser (because it does a better job of compression for emailing that my present iPhoto) and an abbreviated version of ArcSoft PhotoStudio which came bundled with my Canon and has editing tools similar to Adobe Photoshop Elements.
So far I usually use iPhoto's "Preferences/Open in Other" command when I want to open one or more selected images in one of the other programs. I have not found any easy way to locate an image while working in ImageBrowser or PhotoStudio, because iPhoto assigns folder numbers by date, so I'd have to know in which of many numbered folders to look. Placing images into iPhoto albums does not help because while the album names appear in these program's tree view they appear unable to link to them. Canon refuses to answer questions relating to iPhoto and referred me to ArcSoft for any questions about PhotoStudio. ArcSoft says they provide no support for programs bundled with hardware. Typical. What I'd like to know is:
1. Is there any easy way to locate iPhoto images while I'm in one of these other programs?
2. Is there any way to copy an entire album from iPhoto to one of these other programs?
3. I've attended two different digital photo classes in which instructors felt it desirable to convert jpegs to tiffs. One felt it was necessary to reduce the loss of pixels during editing, and the other does it for any image he plans to print, claiming it improves print quality. They recommended getting a special conversion program. Based on responses here to the topic: "Want to save jpeg file as tiff before making edits to photos", others feel that for most amateurs like me this is a minor issue, especially with iPhoto. Testing this I have found, as Kevin Wolfe1 says Feb 12, that compression of a jpeg appears to occur primarily on the first edit and does not sognificantly degrade the image. The programs I mention above appear able to save an edited jpeg as a tiff if desired, but I've noticed also that iPhoto's Export command includes the option to export a jpeg (to desktop or another folder) as a tiff. When I tried this, it did create a file identified as .tif, and I can drag that file back into the iPhoto Library where it remains named as a .tif, and according to iPhoto, this file contains about 5 times the MBs the original jpeg had. What I'm curious to know is, is that a true tiff file or is iPhoto kidding me?
Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)Typical. What I'd like to know is:
1. Is there any easy way to locate iPhoto images
while I'm in one of these other programs?
In iPhoto 06 you have the option to NOT move imported image file in to the iPhoto library. So they images stay in the place where you put them. With this option the iPhoto library only contains "pointers".
2. Is there any way to copy an entire album from
iPhoto to one of these other programs?
Can't you open an album, select all the images then then use "export"
3. I've attended two different digital photo classes
in which instructors felt it desirable to convert
jpegs to tiffs.
If you are worried about this then you should be shooting RAW format. In your case the camera is doing the JPG conversion and the "damage" is unrecoverable.
iPhoto 6 and Tigeer (10.4.x) has a little bit better supportfor raw format images i yu are worried about something that makes such a small difference then you should be woried about the stuf that makes a large difference first.
You might want to concider this workflow:
1) use Canon software to download files from camera
2) use Canon software to convert to TIFF
3) Import TIFF to iPhoto (using option to NOT consolidate library
4) specify arcedit, PS or Gimp as your external editor
Others might want to lt iPhoto do the import and raw conversion but you said you wanted thr photos to be stored outside of iPhoto's library system you you can find them with out having to do an export. -
Opening pictures in iPhoto from other programs
I'm wanting to use pictures from my iPhoto library in other programs-- i.e. Photoshop Elements or to upload to a website. When working from Photoshop Elements, when I go to File>Open>Pictures>iPhotoLibrary I get an error message. The only way I seem to be able to USE any of my photos stored in iPhoto is if I copy them to my "pictures" folder in the Finder and then use them. Of course, this means I am using double the space on my hard drive. There must be an easier way. What am I doing wrong?
So if I use Photoshop as an external editor, the Save function is only saving a copy? Does the copy go back into the original event this way?
When you set Photoshop (or an Image Editor) as an external and then go to edit the pic here's what happens:
1. iPhoto makes a copy of the file and sends the copy to Photoshop
2. Make your edits
3. Save.
4. The Edited version is returned to iPhoto and saved in the Modified Folder.
5. A new thumbnail is made and replaces the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window
Thereafter if you want to get to the Original you have several options:
a: Photos -> Revert to Original - this destroys the modified version
b: Export using the File -> Export command, set the *Kind: Original*
c. Any other form of export yields the edited version.
In Windows if one chooses save when editing in Photoshop, the original is overwritten,
This is true in Photoshop on the Mac too, the difference is you're using iPhoto, and it's +iPhoto making the copy+. Hence the 'Save As' to preserve your original is unnecessary.
which i can't seem to access in Finder browse mode or from iPhoto
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

Jpegs look 'darker' in PSE8 than they do in other programs.
I have started to have problems with Photoshop Elements 8. It used to display jpegs exactly the same as when viewed in other programs, such as Preview and Canon DPP. Then the other day I opened a jpeg in PS8 and it looked a lot darker than I remember, so I opened it in Preview to find that it was OK. Switching back to PSE8 and it was definitely much darker, so I tried DPP as well, again the jpeg looked fine in DPP.
In the end I reinstalled PSE8 and all returned to normal then today when I launched PSE8 it froze on me and I had to do a Force Quit. So I then rebooted launched PSE8 opened a jpeg and its darker than it should be? Opening the same file in Preview, DPP, iPhoto, Image Browser and bizarrely Adobe Bridge CS4 and the jpeg looks correct. It is only PSE8 which is wrong?
I have trashed all the preferences I can find for PSE8 but that did not help.
I suppose I could reinstall PSE8 again but seems a bit of a palaver to have to do this every time.
Any thoughts out there?
MacBook Pro 2.66GHz, 4 GB ram, 10.6.2
PhilI use Adobe RGB for my image settings and I use a Spyder 2 to calibrate my display.
All was perfectly OK in that no matter which program I viewed the jpegs in be it Digital Photo Professional, Preview or PSE they always looked the same. Even when I printed them out the printed result was as far as I was concerned the same.
Then something happened and jpegs started looking darker in PSE, but looked the same as they always did in Preview, DPP and even Adobe CS4 Bridge, it was only PSE that they looked underexposed.
I cured the problem by reinstalling PSE but then it went again, I have reinstalled it again and so far things are OK.
I am sure the problem lies in PSE and something goes awry with the program. As all the other programs continue to display the images as I expect them to look and they print out as I expect as well.

How to check where a table is used in other programes
Hi all,
I am facing one problem... there is a z-table created long back and still being used to store data.
There may be some transactions to fill / update this table. Those programs are not coming in where-used list.
As per the requirement, i already have one transaction to fetch data from this table... but this program is also not coming in the where-used list. So it means there might be some other programs also which are using this table.
So please help me in finding such programs.
Thanks,
SujeetGr8,
There you hit...
"DYNAMIC SELECTS".
Didnt come to my mind at all -
Let me start by saying I have been using FCP X for a year now and really love it. We produce a half hour weekly TV series so I put it through its paces on a weekly bases.
I was horrified to return from the holidays to find out that an automatic update yielded a whole new file system. By packaging all of the Final Cut Event and Project folders into a single library file you can no longer access the original media from other programs such as Photoshop and After Effects without making two copies of all of the media. This really cuts into the pipeline. In the past we were able to recreate new show opens and transitions quickly from within After Effects by linking to the original media in the event folders to use them as source files in compositions. The same was true of grabbing frames from Original movies for use in Photoshop for promotional materials. With the use of the Libraries, ALL OF THE LINKS ARE BROKEN. Yes I know you can right click on a library and still view the files, yes they are still there, but you can't do that from within another program.
This Library system doesn't make any sense. Its a step back from the old system. It was much easier, quicker, and efficient to move large event libraries and projects off and on the system and backup using Finder. Now you have to open up Final Cut to do everything and its a lot slower.
I want to appeal to any Apple developers who monitor this to return to the old system of file management.Media does not have to be stored inside the library. Use the Consolidate library or event to move it to an external location.

Fix for iTunes and Stuttering Audio Upon Opening Other Programs
This was answered for me in another mega thread, so I thought I would create it's own topic in hopes of helping as many people as possible.
This is a fix for those that have the problem of iTunes 7 working fine alone, but when opening another program such as a game, etc., iTunes 7 begins to stutter and crackle. This fix assumes that otherwise, the program works correctly (gapless, and other issues are not a problem, no blue screens of death, etc.)
First off my machine:
Dell XPS 3.4 ghz Pentium Dual Core
2 Gig RAM
Creative SB X-Fi audio card, latest drivers installed
Observed problem:
Running iTunes 7, audio sounded fine, but opening another program such as UT2004 (first person shooter game) caused iTunes 7 to stutter and crackle.
This was not an issue in iTunes 6.05. I had to upgrade as I just purchased the new Nano.
As an aside, I have another sound card on my computer, an older Layla Echo 24 professional soundcard, drivers are about 3 years old. When selecting this card, this problem does not occur.
The Fix:
Close iTunes 7
Upgrade your sound card drivers (just to eliminate that as an issue)
Upgrade to latest Microsoft direct X version:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A -9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en
Start
Run
Type: dxdiag
Click "sound 1" or similarly named tab
Slide bar to "basic acceleration" (mine was at full, and basic is two clicks to the left)
Exit
Restart iTunes 7, and startup music
Open game, or other program
Your music in iTunes 7 should now be stutter/crackle free
This may not work for everybody, but it worked for me so I thought I would pass this along.
Good luck!
(resisting urge to type some snarky remark to Apple that somehow their programmers are indeed as human as Microsoft programmers)...oops...sorry about that.
Dell XPS Windows XP Creative SB X-FI Audio Card
Dell XPS Windows XPi was hopeful, but it didn't work. well teh one thing that i had to do diff was the dx updating, WGA doesn't like to work on my system for some unkown reason (yes it was bought at a store) so i found a way around their WGA check for it (i think) the one i got was labeled as dxwebupdate for august 2006. it updated just fine and it looks like it should be the same one as the newest update release microsoft sent out
my system is a home built one and haven't had probs with itunes with any other version, until this one. i'm tempted to just go back to the newest version 6 i have, cause this is rediculous. i can't do anything without it sputtering away at me. i tryed uninstalling it and removing every trace of its exsistance off of the system (including registry) and that didn't work i made sure all numbers were set to the correct values for my sound blaster audigy gamer, i was using some non oem drivers, but switched over just to make sure witht eh newest ones creative had, and it made zero diff.
i'm wondering if it is an issue it is having with sound blaster cards...
well anyways if anyone else has any ideas i would like to hear them
