  • Metalink Doc ID 359145.1 (TIMESTAMP and TSTZ & TSLTZ)

    Hello All,
I read Metalink Doc. ID 359145.1 (Daylight Savings changes on the Oracle databases) which talks about 2 types of patches, which are as follows.
    Oracle JVM Patch
If Oracle JVM is not installed in the database, there is no need to apply this patch but question is what if we want to install JVM at a later time.
    Time zone file patch.
My question is if we don't have any columns in the database of type TSTZ or TSLTZ but have some of type TIMESTAMP, is there any need to apply the patch.
    Thanks for the response,
    Regards,
    BB.

Why not just run the utltzuv2.sql as suggested by the metalink doc to be sure. If this is a production database I won't not take chances.
And the doc also mentioned, some 10g data dictionary tables may use timezone awareness data type.

  • Is it okay to post stuff out of metalink doc id on forums ???

    hello all,
I was wondering if we can post part of metalink doc on the forums ??? As someone told me when i post part of the metalink doc saying i should not post metalink doc...and should only give out the metalink doc ID....altought i did give the doc id and posted part of the info ....is it okay to do that or not ?? i wanted to ask you guys ? please advise..

Under UK copyright law there is a "fair dealing" section which allows copying of material to certain extents depending on the type of media i.e. Books, Journals, Music Scores etc. and depending on the purpose of copying. For things that aren't explicitly covered in the copyright and patents act, it can be generally deduced from what is covered. So for copying stuff e.g. from metalink it may come under the books/written works details which allows for 1 chapeter or 5% of the whole (whichever is the greater), for research or study purposes. Saying that however, each case would have to be legally reviewed.
More importantly, Oracle's material comes under US law, so that's what would have to be looked at and referred to.
I can understand Oracle not wanting metalink support info publicly published as it is information that is pertinent to paying support customers. Making it public could lead to loss of revenue for Oracle.

  • Need script profiler.sql (available on Metalink, Doc Id: 243755)

    Hi All,
I need a document available at metalink named script profiler.sql (Doc Id: 243755). I don't have access to metalink. Please, someone do me a favour. Paste the content here in forum or email me the doc ([email protected]).

    Hi Mr Sybrand,
I know u r so helping in this forum but I think u go harsh sometimes. I hope u read my reply before u replied. I wasn't asking something for FREE while I didn't know that it can't be obtained for free.
I agreed on that it is NOT allowed to get info from metalink without the proper license.
Oh, I didn't know this. At least someone look into it and tell what is it all about and how the same could be achieved, if possible. Thanks.I guess the first reply told me this fact.

Inside the V2 folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the restored folder. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest.

  • Oracle 10g Using 99% of 7GB RAM on Solaris10

    Hi All,
I am working on three database instances each installed on a single solaris server. Now, the server had 3GB of RAM and all the dbs were up and running fine. However, 95% of RAM was getting utilized so we went for RAM upgradation frm 3 to 7GB. To my utter amazment the Ora10g user is still shown to be using 99% of current memory. Ideally I should be having atleast 30% of the current memory free.
Please advice how can i reduce this excess RAM usage by Ora10g user.
This is a shared server env for all the three dbs.

I tihnk you're counting the memory wrong.
If, for example, from top, you see a process is using, let's say 700M. Now, let's assume that the SGA is 500m. That 700m being reported includes the 500m shared memory segment.
So, if you have 10 processes, each reporting 700m, that's 7000m, but, in reality, they're only using 200m*10+500m = 2500m. The shared memory segment(s) should only be counted once.
In Solaris, to see how much memory is allocated/mapped where for a given process, try the pmap command.
pmap -x <pid of process>This will show how the memory for that process breaks out, including what portion is the shared memory segment.
As to why you're getting errors when trying to allocate additional memory, well, it could be that you're really out of memory, or it could be that you're being artificially limited, by some O/S parameter, SHMMAX, etc.
Finally, see MetaLink Doc IDs 115753.1 and 1008866.6 for more information.

  • Why SQL Plans age so quickly & 1?

I have an application running against a 10g database (10.2.0.1.0 on SPARC Solaris 10), and am trying to investigate one particular SQL statement with poor performance. I know the SQL statement (an UPDATE) - I just want to get the execution plan used when it is executed by the application. By looking in V$SQL I can see that the SQL statement appears, and I can see that the EXECUTIONS count goes up over time. I also see which CHILD of that SQL it is. However, when I try to get the execution plan by calling DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR I get the message that:
NOTE: cannot fetch plan for SQL_ID: aaaaaaaaaaaa, CHILD_NUMBER: 1
          Please verify value of SQL_ID and CHILD_NUMBER;
It could also be that the plan is no longer in cursor cache (check v$sql_plan)Checking V$SQL_PLAN there is indeed nothing for that SQL_ID and CHILD_NUMBER.
My main question is, why is the SQL execution plan being removed or reused or whatever from the library cache in the shared pool so quickly, when it has only just been executed in the last minute or so? What can I do to keep the execution plan in the shared pool long enough that I can grab it and see what it was?
The SQL statement is an UPDATE and uses bind variables throughout. The SQL_ID is the same in all cases, indicating that it is indeed the same SQL statement each time. I do not think that query rewriting is taking place - cursor_sharing is EXACT. So I do believe that the SQL does really contain the bind variables.
Sometimes when I query V$SQL a little later on the previous CHILD has disappeared and a new CHILD has appeared, for the same SQL UPDATE on the same SQL_ID.
I know I could trace the session to get all SQL statements, but getting the execution plan using DBMS_XPLAN seems the most direct and logical way to go about it. I'd also like to understand why this whole behaviour is occurring.
I also have some follow on questions:
What use is the shared pool if it ages out such SQL execution plans so quickly? The next execution is going to have to re-parse and optimize it all over again. Okay maybe not re-parse depending on things, but certainly re-optimize. Won't it? I guess this could happen if the shared pool was too small, but the SGA is 2.5 GB (sga_target), and the shared pool shows free memory - currently 41 MB of a shared pool of 450 MB (from V$SGASTAT, and 1.9 GB for buffer cache). How do I prove if it is the shared pool size or something else? Unfortunately Oracle now has so many other things in the shared pool, apart from the library cache (again, see V$SGASTAT for the individual allocations), that more and more is used within it by other things.
Why am I seeing multiple children (CHILD_NUMBER) of the same SQL statement? I know of some reasons why this can occur e.g. different schemas and tables, but I am pretty sure that this is all the same SQL statement on the same table in the same schema. But to be honest, Yes, we do have multiple schemas in the same database, so it could be related to this. But I am pretty sure that no one else is running the same application at the same time. So all of these UPDATEs should be due to my session. Are the multiple children related to the re-optimization of the SQL because of the execution plan being removed? My concern is that these new CHILDREN suddenly appear after the application has been running for a while, and are clearly due to the same application and same session issuing the same SQL again, some time later on.
The whole point of the library cache of SQL statements is to reuse execution plans. This both avoids the effort of producing another execution plan, and ensures that all executions use the same execution plan. But the appearance of these different children surely mean that they have been parsed and optimized separately, and that they could be using a different execution plan. Which may mean that the execution plans are radically different, and something I want to avoid. I want one good execution plan to be reliably used every time this SQL is executed.
    Many Thanks,
    John

    John Brady wrote:
Thanks for the pointers to the articles. I don't think that is what I am experiencing - differences in size of bind variable character strings between executions - but I have not tried to prove it conclusively.
When I checked v$sql_shared_cursor the difference was flagged as being 'Y' for 'Translation Mismatch'. In the Reference manual under V$SQL_SHARED_CURSOR, this column is described as:
    Base objects do not match
I don't know what this means, and there is no further description in the Reference manual.John,
you've mentioned that you have multiple schemas in your database. This finding suggests that the same statement had been parsed by a different schema and therefore could not be shared.
As I said, my main question was about why the execution plan was aged out so quickly? I wondered if there was any SQL I could run that could tell me why e.g. measure rate of new SQL being added to the library cache. Or show the position of the execution plan in a Least Recently Used list?I guess the first information to consult would be the V$LIBRARY_CACHE_MEMORY and V$LIBRARYCACHE views which can tell you basic statistics about your library cache. The LRU information is exposed via the X$KSMLRU SYS view. You can find e.g. on Metalink more informations how to use these views.
A couple of helpful Metalink Doc IDs:
    396940.1
    146599.1
    62143.1
    1012049.6
    232443.1
    444560.1
Some of them might already be outdated but help in the general understanding regarding the library cache.
Checking the corresponding STATSPACK/AWR sections "SQL ordered by Parse Calls"/"SQL ordered by Sharable Memory"/"SQL ordered by Version Count" might also reveal some additional information.

As far as I unterstand I have to be registered to be able to access "metalink" web pages e.g. on

If I want to register for metalink I have to enter a "Support Identifier" which can be derived from the "contract".
Contract means I have to buy something. Is this correct?
How about students which only want to learn Oracle technology? Is there a way to get a free Support Identifier WITHOUT

PeterProduct documentation is found at tahiti.oracle.com. It is free and open to the public.
Product downloads are found at http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/index.html. Free to the public, but be sure to read - and heed - the license agreements.
As mentioned, MetaLink is the portal to additional resources, available only to those with paid support. There's no such thing as a "reduced metalink doc". There is no "one" metalink doc. Metalink is a repository of many documents, white papers, etc. It also provides a gateway to downloading patches. Access to patches is part of what one pays for when one buys a support contract.
