Method for backing up connection data?

I am moving to a new workstation. I need a way to back up my
connection data, because I manage multiple sites using Contribute
and it's a pain to reestablish the dialing directory. Contribute
does not appear to have an easy "export connections directory"
function. Is there a file I can copy?

A few other notes on backup and backup material. The previous article on DVD backup not withstanding, not all writable DVD's are equal. A very good article on this subject can be found here:
http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media/
Part of my other day job is IT administration at a small semiconductor company. We, like most other companies, do ALL of our backup to tape. Our tapes are not MiniDV but DLT's. We store all of our tapes off site in a environmentally controlled storage facility. I suspect you like me cannot afford something like this for our video work but at a minimum this does mean you should not stuff your tapes in a box and stick them in the attic.
Another thing to note that backup means you should, at minimum, have 2 copies of your critical files on two different pieces of hardware. If you keep all of your project files on your working system disk in your Mac and a copy of those files on an external drive you are pretty safe in your backup. If you ONLY keep one copy on that external drive, you are playing with fire. Especially when it comes to hard drive. Hard drive failure is the numero uno failure mechanism in computers, followed by power supplies. It is not a question of if a drive is going to fail, simply when.
For me, I run a RAID 5 1.2TB linux server on my home network. I keep my working files on my MacPro and backup to the server. I'm paranoid square so in addition to that, I back up my RAID to two 500GB portable external drives on a periodic basis. For me, hard drives and media is dirt cheap as opposed to trying to replace important data that is lost or in many cases, irreplaceable.

  • Methods for backing up/cloning Bootcamp partition from inside OSX

    The key here is from inside OS X, not from inside Windows (XP).
    The only reason in the world I have to run Windows is because a Mac version of my accounting system doesn't exist. Well, there is also the fact that some companies still develop portions of their partner websites around IE instead of around open standards cough*CISCO*cough.
    Anyway, I have a bootcamp partition and the data on it is very important (accounting system!). I run it once, maybe twice a month and it's already slow enough as Kaspersky AV runs on every bootup so I don't want to add anything to the Windows bootup. I'm looking for a method of backing up (incremental capable) or cloning (incremental capable) my Bootcamp partition from inside OS X in conjunction with the other backups I do - well, now I use Time Machine so "the other backups I do" is moot, until I backup my Time Machine partition too (been bitten by the "backups not being there when you need them for some really random, unexpected reason" bug too before).
    It seems that most of the cloning tools I've tried can't clone or even backup FAT partitions. Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or previous experiences they wouldn't mind sharing?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hmm, functional but not exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for the info though -
    - Is there a tool around that can do incremental backups instead of full backups every time it's run? WinClone 1.6b doesn't seem to be able to do incremental backups.
    - Is there a tool around that fits the above requirement, but can be scheduled (or even automator'd)? Automation is a good thing The more maintenance tasks we (users) have to do manually, the more there is to forget to do.

  • Methods for Backing Up Address Book

    I'm researching two methods of backing up my Address Book information.
    1.) Choosing "Back up Address Book" from the File menu in the Address Book application. This creates a .abbu file with the date attached for you to save in any location you specify.
    2.) Copying the entire "Address Book" folder from ~Library/Application Support/. This will include the files: (ABPerson.skIndex, ABPerson.skIndexInverted, AddressBook.data, AddressBook.data.beforesave, AddressBook.data.previous, Images)
    My question: Is there a difference in these two methods? If I restore from method #1 will my results be different then restoring from method #2.
    Why I'm asking: I'm using Retrospect to back up all my data to an external drive periodically. By using Retrospect, I'd have to use method #2 since it's an automated task.
    Thanks in Advance,

  • Using TC for back up and data storage...partition?

    I'm not sure I know enough to word this question properly so my apologies in advance.
    I picked up a time capsule today and I want to make sure I set it up the right way. Besides using it for back-ups, I'd like to use it for data storage of things that no longer fit on my laptop. (Now a MacBook Air with a smaller drive than I'm used to.)
    I'd like to put my iPhoto library, iTunes and various other things that I don't have to have with me all the time on it.
    Should I partition the drive? Can I partition the drive? For data and backup sections?
    I also have a question re: two people backing up to one TC. If one is backing up all the time and one is in town only occasionally, how is space distributed if partitioning isn't possible? If the TC capsule backes up till it's full and then drops off the oldest backup, what does it do when it;s full and the occasionally backed up machine is put into the network?
    Many thanks for any help. I'm looking forward to setting this up and would like to avoid doing it wrong!

    The drive cannot be partitioned. You can create folders as you wish to suit your need for things other than backups.
    As noted earlier, when the occasionally connected machine is connected for backup, it will delete the oldest backup for that machine to make room when needed.

  • Want to reinstall OS X -- recommendation for back up appllication data?

    Hi,
    I want to reinstall OS X on my iMac. But I need to backup some Apple application data first so I can restore it later.
    Specifically, all the email in Mail.app, all the songs/albumart/otherdata for iTunes, and the data in Address Book.
    Can someone point me in the right direction for how to back up then restore this data? If there's a commerical app that will handle this easily for me, that might be good too (but most backup apps I've seen are intended for coping an entire disk, I don't think that's what I'm looking for).
    Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks,

  • What is the best method for backing up photos in IPhoto?

    I have over 10,000 photos in IPhoto and am looking for the best method for doing a backup (or an archive?).  I'm now using ICloud and it appears it's just photo streaming and does not have storage capability. External hard drive, copying to a DVD, other suggestions?

    Most Simple Back Up
    Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
    Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    My Routine
    My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
    It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
    I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
    My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
    Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • Best method for collecting low frequency data

    Hello everyone,
    I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to collect relatively low frequency data (about 1 Hz). I know there are a few different ways to do so in labview such as the DAQ assistant or making DAQ mx and making your own virtual channel. Also there are an abundence of different settings to choose from. I'm using an NI 9215 DAQ card and am collecting voltages. I would be interested to here any opinions on a method for doing so and maybe the settings that they would use.
    The reason I'm asking is because I'm just using the DAQ assistant but I'm really not sure if that's what I want to be using. I feel like there is a better way.
    Thank you all!

    winterfresh11 wrote:
    Is this different from triggering? Because this particular DAQ card can't be triggered.
    There is a big difference between triggering and sample clock.  The trigger tells the DAQ to start acquiring data.  The sample clock tells the DAQ when to take a sample.  You trigger once per acquisition.  The sample clock just keeps on going until the acquisition is complete (either aborted or desired number of samples is acquired).

  • Best method for backing up macbook air?

    Please tell me what would be the best method to back up my macbook air?

    Yes, this i know, Since I have nearly 100 HD laying around, when I clone my system, its bootable, and the second HD becomes the defacto recovery
    at the very worst, you can reload the OS online.       But yes, youre correct, but Superduper is FREE, and CCC surely isnt.
    as a "clone it all" option, Superduper is great for HD upgrading and emergency backup for laptop HD.  Since laptops HD are prone to failure (not SSD as in the AIR), keeping a cloned backup is a great idea.
    But yes, your right, ......I consider a second cloned HD a "recovery HD", ......but not in the sense you imply.......
    An ERROR that both superduper and CCC make in a CLONE, however, is they write the BOOT FILES in a diff. location, so if you install the replacement HD after a crash, it will (not 1st time which is always slow) cause slightly slower startup from poweron.......in which case you have to reinstall the OS on the CLONE...........that IS if you care that much about a few extra seconds boot time on your replacement cloned HD.
    But LION and MOUNTAIN LION systems *also* have "Network Recovery", which can download and install without a recovery volume.

  • Problem choose method for save and retrive data

    Hi
    I want to conver sql database to berkeley db.my sql database has over that 40 tables and each table has diffrent fields (like varchar,int,...)and some tables have over that 30 fields .I want to use method that berkeleydbcorec pdf explain in chapter 3(Using C Structures with DB):
    what is the limitation for use first method for store information?
    I think only limitation is waste database.
    what are the advantages of use (marshalling the data)?
    if I use marshalling the data for store records does speed for fetch information reduce or not?
    is it good use marsharling or first method for store information?
    please help me.
    regards,
    saaed

    Hi,
    Since nobody else has posted anything I thought I would mention a couple of things:
    Most applications that need a database need a way to work with records and fields. Berkeley DB does not have a schema so it is up to the application to format the data. Some databases through their DML make it easy to the application to look at fields but they are doing work for you behind the scenes.
    Some dbms's if they support variable length fields store some information on the page to delimit fields. At run time there is some overhead in doing that as the dbmx needs to find the location on the page for the next field and so forth. So although the application may not have to write the code to obtain fields from records there still is the overhead in the database to do so.
    As you noted in Berkeley DB, you do the marshalling and unmarshalling of data. Since you know your data best, you can optimize it as you see fit.
    Perhaps you should try this on one table first and see what the performance is.
    I hope this helps.

    Hi
    Does your client is using punch in and punch out data. If then then we can store the P10 and P20 data in SAP directly with the help of the integration with 3rd party systems.
    If not then just prepare a customized prghramme with the help of ABAP guys to uplad the data in IT 2002 against the absence types.
    For this you need to do the Absences customization in SAP R/3

  • What is the Oracle supported method for backing up OCFS2?

    Hi
    My customer has been trying to backup Oracle Cluster File System (ver 2) with netbackup 6.5, but not via RMAN.
    They want to know if this method of backing OCFS up is suppported?
    But I think the supported method has to use a netbackup Oracle agent and RMAN
    Can anybody confirm this please?
    Regards
    jethro_p

    The recommended method is thru RMAN only. Directly backing up OCFS thru netbackup is not a reliable backup.
    We faced an critical oracle error & the database went down. We are not able to bring the database with the direct backup thru veritas. Then we restored the database only thru rman backup.

  • Easy vpn or site-to-site vpn for back up connection?

    Hi,
    All of my remote sites are connected to HQ via MPLS circuits. I would like to create back link for those remote sites using 871 routers with DSL connection and terminate ipsec vpn tunnels at the outside interface of ASA5540 located at HQ.
    The 871 routers will be configured HSRP standby mode. It becomes active and forward traffic when the main router of the remote site losses connection to HQ.
    Questions:
    1. Has anyone had similar requirements and use easy vpn as a solution? will site-to-site work better for this scenario?
    2. How to make ASA5540 handle the routes properly when it sees the same subnets located on both Inside interface and the other end of the tunnel which is terminated at the outside interface?
    Static routes are configured on the ASA.
    3. I also try to avoid user entering username and password for interactive authentication in easy vpn.
    Thanks so much in advance.
    PH

    yes you can site-to-site VPN as a backup.
    If the interface going to the backup connection is an interface different than the outside interface, and if the regular connection going down means that the outside interface will go down, then you only need an additional default route, but with a higher metric than your regular route.
    But if both connections go out the same interface, or if the outside interface will not go down when the primary Internet connection goes down, then you'll need to take a different approach. ASA 7.2 code introduced a feature called "Standby ISP Support", which allows the firewall to keep an active track on an Internet connection, and if that connection
    fails, switch to a different connection.

    Hi I am trying to create a method in another class to call another method that checks for userid in DB? What is the best way to set this up? I.e. calling method?

    private boolean setuserExist(String username) {

    The better question is I guess,
    How do I use this code below to call the 2nd block of code or method?
    private boolean setuserExist(String username) {
    else return false;
    public String getserExist() {
    return userexist;

    public boolean userExist(String username){
    boolean exist = false;
    System.out.println("in DB: username is " + username);
    try{
    Connection conn = dbc.getConnection();
    Statement statement = conn.createStatement();
    String query = "SELECT User.UserID " +
    "FROM User " +
    "WHERE User.UserID = '" + username + "'";
    ResultSet resultSet = statement.executeQuery(query);
    System.out.println("1.1");
    ArrayList result = new ArrayList();
    while(resultSet.next()){
    ArrayList item = new ArrayList();
    item.add(resultSet.getString("UserID"));
    result.add(item);
    System.out.println("DB Count: " + result.size());
