Method of testing external hard drive?

Forgive me if this was posted in the wrong category. I had a lapse of judgement last night and left my external hard drive plugged in while it was wedged under my pillow. About half an hour later I realized it was under there after I heard faint clicking noises coming from the drive. It quite warm, but not extremely hot to the touch (perhaps as hot as a sleeved cup of coffee).
I plan to use the files to back up important photos and documents for work, so I want to determine if purchasing a new hard drive is necessary. Can you please suggest the best way to thoroughly test the hard drive, to determine if I have incurred any damage? I am still able to mount the drive and access files, but I am hesitant to leave it plugged in for an extended period of time. Please excuse the ignorance and thanks for the support.
(Hard drive is a 500GB LaCie Petit)

SMART testing is not supported on external drives, so you don't have the option of testing the drive with SMART Utility. That would be the best thing to do if it were an internal drive. I don't know any comparably thorough way of testing an external drive. You may want to check with LaCie tech support and ask whether they have any suggestions.
If you don't get any more promising advice from LaCie, and if the drive doesn't seem to be acting up at all now, and if you're only going to be using it for backup data, I think you can just go ahead and do so. If it were going to be a primary storage drive for everyday, all-day use, I wouldn't suggest this, but I don't think a backup drive needs to be quite that dependable. If you aren't comfortable with this assessment, replace the drive as your first-line backup and relegate it to use as a secondary backup. Where important data is concerned, it never hurts to have multiple backups.

what is the best method for using a iphoto with an external hard drive for greater capacity?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Using the same external hard drive to host a Time Machine partition + a test recovery partition: no longer possible?

In 10.7, I used to have one external hard drive with two partitions:
    1) a Time Machine partition that I used to back up my internal hard drive;
    2) another partition that I used once a month as a target partition to test the restoration of my Time Machine backup (because having a backup is a good first step, but regularly making sure it could be usable for a full recovery in case of a failure of my internal hard drive is important as well).
After upgrading to 10.9, my first backup restoration test failed with the error message "An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk." I found the following discussion:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4370294
which suggests that I need to make sure my external hard drive is formated using GUID and/or that I need to install 10.7 on the target drive. I checked in the Disk Utility, and indeed my external hard drive is formatted using Apple Partition Map rather than GUID.
I also found the following KB article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5911
which suggests that, to be able to install 10.9 on the external hard drive, I need to configure it to have only one partition.
Can anyone confirm that it is no longer possible to perform a backup recovery test on the same external hard drive as the one hosting the Time Machine partition? Do I now need a second external hard drive if I want to perform such a restoration test?
Thanks in advance for your insights.

Answering my own question: I managed to perform the restoration test on a second external hard drive. The trick was to make sure it was partitioned using GUID. I didn't even have to first install OS 10.9 on the second partition (I had an old restoration of 10.7 on there).

  • Backup methods and external hard drive questions

I usually copy files and photos to DVDs but wonder if that's enough and the most efficient method to back up.  So I purchased a Seagate 1TB external hard drive.  Here are my questions:
    - What is the best way to copy all my data to this hard drive?
    - Is it necessary to copy everything?
    - Is it possible to partition the external hard drive?
    - Is it possible to use this hard drive to copy data from more than one computer, for instance, my powerbook and a PC laptop?  If so, how?
Any information on this would be so appreciated!

You can partition the drive if you need to, but that will depend upon why you would need to partition the drive.
Personally, I would clone your startup volume to the external drive. You can do this with any of the referenced software as well as by using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can then incrementally update the clone using a backup utility.
It would be possible to backup more than one computer in which case you would need to partition the drive. Backing up a Windows machine, however, would require partitioning the drive using MBR and formatting it FAT32 (MSDOS).
For clarification do you really have a PowerBook (PPC machine) or a MacBook (Intel?)

  • Method to move "iLife Sound Effects" to an external hard drive?

I would like to move my "iLife Sound Effects" to an external hard drive. Is there an easy method? I then want to permanently delete them on my boot up drive as well. Thanks.

My iTunes library is set up the way I said in the top post and works totally fine.
Yes, and that is the default structure to which I was referring.  iTunes will organize it that way automatically unless people do start changing settings (in which case they should know what they are doing and how iTunes works with library files and media structure.)
Both ways work, the advantages of mine would be that should iTunes try looking fo a library, it will always be in the default location.
It makes people think they have to change media location in preferences.  They do not unless they want to relocate media only and leave other things on their internal drive (in which case there is no point in copying library files to the external, and you certainly wouldn't want to then delete them from your internal).
Downside is that then should someone move their iTunes library to anther computer they need to remember to get those library files on the external hard drive.
Just copy the whole iTunes folder and it will get the library files to the other drive in one step, along with all the other files.
Your post has good stuff but it makes a move appear intimidating and look like people have to do a lot of organizing to move the collection.  It also throws in  extra steps (namely altering preference settings) that could cause confusion or even make a mess of things.  If people leave iTunes to default preference settings (which most people do) the move summarizes into a short line:  Copy a folder and hold an extra button the next time you start iTunes.
Note that the instructions in the link I provided earlier do also include many steps, but those are to ensure that everybody does have it all organized correctly before simply copying the iTunes folder.  In the end it is just a simple action.

  • Problems trying to store iTunes on external hard drive and back up iPhone to internal hard drive?

    Hi
I have been tirelessly trying to relocate my entire iTunes function to an external hard drive to free space on my laptop. I have migrated the iTunes library (from the 'My Music' location on laptop) to ext hard drive and also reinstalled iTunes, asking to save all files during set up to the ext drive (not in default 'Program Files' on laptop). I have also pointed iTunes to the library's new location on the ext hard drive. I did this after reading a recommendation on here that it is better to have both my library and all other iTunes files in the same place.
One of the problems is when I have moved the library, it has for some reason created two iTunes folders on the ext drive with different music in each, but the library database file is only available in one of them, and I am not sure if all the music from both folders is available in iTunes.
Another huge issue is that when I have tried to back up my iPhone to the computer (as recommended to do after migrating the iTunes program to another location), it is not letting the process complete; I get an error message saying it cannot save to the computer. It seems the location of the back ups (C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup) isn't compatible with the new location of my library etc (on my ext drive)and from searching the internet for a solution, it seems you can't change the location of where back ups of an iPhone are stored.
So, does anyoine know if there is a fix-all solution to these dilemmas? Or should I just keep my library on one drive and the iTunes program on my int drive?
    Thanks in advance
    VR

    Hmm.
I'm sure I'd successfully tested the command line version of the move instructions at one point, but I'm getting the same "access denied" error when I try. Maybe "Move" doesn't like working with folders when the path contains sections with hidden or system flags. Anyway herewith version 3 which I've just tested works as described...
    Relocate iOS device backups
Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later you can use the following steps:
Using Windows Explorer move the current Mobile Sync Backup folder from C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup to your chosen location, e.g. as  X:\Backup where <User> is your Windows user name and X: is your preferred drive.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up, then type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "X:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "X:\Backup" accordingly.
If you're still running Windows XP you can use Junction (cmd line tool) or NTFSLink (shell ext). In both cases you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then use the tools to get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.
Note that while this method works for iOS device backups it cannot be used to redirect sections of the media library. iTunes will break the connection the first time it tries to write a file to the target folder.
What happens when you want to sync the device? If you're getting a warning about erasing and reloading the device with media from the current library then something is wrong. If you moved the library files correctly and then reconnected them to iTunes this should still be the "home" library of the device and it should sync as if nothing had changed. If not then revist the make a split library portable post for advice. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if for some reason you accidentally erased the original library files and all backups thereof.

  • How do I move my iTunes Library from one PC to another when all my actual songs live on an external hard-drive?

Need to transfer my iTunes from one Win7 laptop to a new one.  The trick is that all my music files live on an external hard drive, which I also use for Home Media Server use (iTunes only has a portion of my full collection under management for use on my iPhone).
I don't want to consolidate the music files to the My Music folder (which almost all tutorials say is the first step to transfer the library) - I want to keep them on the external drive.  I want to retain my playlists mainly, as well as things like Podcasts which are unique to the iPhone.
      How does one accomplish this?
      Thanks in advance!!
    -Matt

OK. So your current media library is at C:\Users\Matt\Music\iTunes.
Your current media folder is C:\Users\Matt\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
Your library is in the old style layout.
The bulk of your media is at F:\MP3 and you're happy with the layout of it.
Are you OK with the media files moving to F:\iTunes\iTunes Media but otherwise retaining the same file & folder names they have now. If so carry on, otherwise I'll give you the steps for migrating the library without making it portable first, or indeed at all.
With iTunes closed backup the iTunes Library.itl file somewhere.
    Open iTunes.
Open Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab. Check the media folder location is given as C:\Users\Matt\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
Make sure Keep iTunes Music folder organised and Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library are turned off.
    Close preferences.
Use File > Organise Library > Rearrange files in the folder iTunes Music. This will pull the files in the Mobile Applications folder into your current media folder and tell iTunes you want to use the new layout in future for anything that it is managing, e.g. podcasts, apps etc. Exisitng content on F: won't be touched.
Open Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab. Change the media folder location to F:\MP3. When you click OK you will be asked if you want to copy existing content to the new location. Click No.
Close iTunes. Reopen it. Check that media folder location is now correctly given as F:\MP3.
Use File > Organise Library > Consolidate files. This will pull any files that are outside F:\MP3 into it, but leave those that are already inside alone.
    Close iTunes.
Copy the files iTunes Library.itl iTunes Library Extras.itdb iTunes Library Genius.itdb sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into F:\.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and naviagate to the library file at F:\.
Test that the library works i.e. that your files play.
    Close iTunes.
    Create a folder called F:\iTunes.
Move the files iTunes Library.itl iTunes Library.xml iTunes Library Extras.itdb iTunes Library Genius.itdb sentinel and the folders Album Artwork & MP3 into F:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and naviagate to the library file at F:\iTunes.
    Test that the library works.
    Close iTunes.
    Rename F:\iTunes\MP3 as F:\iTunes\iTunes Media.
    Open iTunes, test the library.
If at any stage the library won't play your media undo the preceeding step where this has involved moving or renaming files or use the shift-start-iTunes method to open the previous copy of the library.
If you've made it this far you can now connect this drive to your new computer and connect to the library with the shift-start-iTunes method without needing to worry which drive letter has been assigned. If your new machine has a big enough drive you can copy the entire iTunes folder to, say, C:\iTunes and it will just work, meaning that your external drive can function as a backup... You really should keep at least two copies of eveything.
Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows)
Grab SyncToy2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. If your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder (which is the point of doing all the above) then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes.

  • How to set up iTunes with an external hard drive so that there is not a double location for the iTunes Media folder

    Hi,
A very helpful postee got to the end of his knowledge level, so I am posting this for you tech guys to sort out. Bit long because I've tried to set it out step by step. Briefly I'm new to iTunes and my laptop has a very small hard drive and is virtually full and due to be replaced. So I want to use an external hard drive.
Now I know that iTunes installs itself to two locations: 1. Programs Files 2. Music. And its the Music location that bothers me.
I asked about using an external hard disk to store the actual AAC files. I was advised that in order to change the loaction of the iTunes media folder I was should employ preferences/advanced/ and this is what i saw (as you would expect):
Then I hooked up my hard drive, hit 'change', and this is what I saw:
I was a bit worried by the lack of pathway details, but assumed it must have done something on the external drive, so I looked on  it and this is what i saw (highlighted):
But compare this with what was in the directory I attempted to reproduce, viz in the iTunes folder in /laptop/Music/iTunes:
A ton of stuff. The only stuff that corresponded with what iTunes had created on my external hard drive was in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media folder:
Now this suggests that there are TWO locations for my preferences. The advanced tab only allowed me to ADD an extra location, not REPLACE the original.
    So:
    1. Which of the two locations will iTunes choose when I add music? Surely it will go with the original pathway laid down in the directory when iTunes was installed, and ignore my external Hard Drive? I mean, how can there be two automatic locations?!!!
2.. I don't mind itunes library being on my laptop as this is just a list, but it obvoiusly has to have a pathway to the site where the actual AAC files are stored.
so surely it won't work unless the whole lot is on the external hard drive: library, extras, genius, the lot?
    4. How then do I get it all on the external since merely changing "preferences" doesn't do the job?
    5. Is this perhaps the reason why so many people report that iTunes does not recognize their external hard disk:
    http://www.ehow.com/info_12199596_external-hard-drive-not-recognized-itun es.html
I just don't want this to happen to me. Any answers?

As I've replied to your other threads...
    Easy method 1:
Move or Copy entire working library from current location to the root of your external drive. Press & hold down shift (option on a Mac) as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Choose when prompted, then browse to ..\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl on the external. If you copied the library across then test your new library works properly after renaming the original folder, before deleting the original folder to recover space.
    Easy method 2:
If you haven't really started to build your library. Press & hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Create. Browse to the root of the external drive. Create the library as ITunes. Drag your media into ..\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes.
    Complex method:
Required if you've already tried other things and now have media & library scattered around. See the post make a split library portable.
    in addition...
In all cases the idea is to get a library folder called iTunes containing a media folder called iTunes Media with all media inside this media folder. Once you have the library in this shape it is easy to reconnect to the library with the shift-start-iTunes method if the drive letter changes, move the library to another computer, and backup the library by cloning the folder to another drive.

  • How do I move only part of my itunes library to an external hard drive?

I have all my music and movies in the itunes library. I am wanting to move the movies to an external hard drive to save space, but keep the music in itunes on my computer.  I want to be able to play them all through my apple TV via home sharing. I have read a number of posts about consolidating the library and how to access files from an external hard drive, and how to move the entire library to another location, but don't know how to move part of the library.

It is possible but it is not standard configuration for iTunes. You will need to learn details of how iTunes operates in order to stay on top of it and not be back here in a month with a messed up library, or in a year or two when you discover it is a real nuisance when it comes to transferring your content to a new drive.
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/instant-expert-secrets-featur es-of-itunes-9/ - "To perform a consolidate operation on selected tracks only, simply highlight the tracks you would like the consolidate, right-click and choose 'Consolidate'. iTunes will prompt you to confirm that you want to copy these tracks into your iTunes Media folder."  You will, of course, need to temporarily re-designate your iTunes media folder location as part of doing this.
The above method is a possibility but I have not tested it because I still run iTunes 7.5
Another way would be to copy the files to the external drive.  Delete them from iTunes, then drag the copied files back to iTunes (re-adding them) while holding down the option key.  If you do have anything in a playlist it will have to be re-added to the playlist, and you will lose ratings and date added.

  • Mac air with external hard drive - not being found on Finder, Time Machine, Migration Assistant

I have been using an external drive (Imation Apollo) to access only, old files from previous computer (PC) on a new Mac Air.  I had not transferred them across to new computer (didn't want to do that)  just accessing them from the HD.  It had been working fine until recently.  Each time the external drive had been connected Time Machine would come up and ask if i wanted to use this drive for back ups, and I always chose 'Decide later'.  So, as yetI hadn't as yet configured Time Machine to do back ups.
Recently I noticed that the extrnal HD was no longer showing up on Finder.  Slight panic as i have 5 or 6 yrs of work saved on that HD
Further investigations - it's also not showing up either on on Disk Utility, or on Migration Assistant.
    I've done the following:
Tried HD in each of different USB ports  - made no difference, HD still not showing up
Tested different Hubs in each port with HD attached - no difference HD not showing up
Tried USB flash drives in the USB ports - These are working fine and show up on finder
Tried the HD on other comptuters (a PC though, don't have access to another mac to do this test)- working fine, the HD is showing up and is accessable
Interrogated the Console logs to try to see if the act of attaching the HD creates a log entry - couldn't find anything
Rebooted computer via shut down, power disconnect - no difference
Reset PRAM - no difference still not showing up
Reset SMC - no differnce still not showing up
So I think I have established that all the USB ports are functioning correctly and able to access other external drive devices, using hubs with external powersource is not the issue, identified that the external hard drive is working OK, and it appears that the Mac itself is functioning normally.
What would be the reason the Mac now does not allow this specific external HD to be identified and accessed.  The only possible things I can think of are
if I had in fact pressed 'Do not use' when Time Machine asked 'do you want to use this drive for back ups'.  Would that mean that the Mac now totally rejects this HD from being a source of accessible files - I hope not!
I also think that my husband may have disconnected the hard drive from my computer to access some stuff and he just yanked it out rather than use the safe eject method.  Could this create an issue?  The Hard drive works fine on his PC.
Why is my Mac Air now rejecting this HD and what can I do to access my historical files now.
Any assistance anyone can provide would be very greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Anna

I can't answer why it isn't accessing it, but I have a slightly related issue w my back up drive starting to get noisy.
Realizing that redundancy is safety for critical data.  I talked to my brother about my situation the other day & he said he has 3 small Western Digital portable HDs that he rotates for backup. He even keeps 1 in the safe deposit box.
I have read for some time that we should have multiple back ups & also have our critical stuff backed up off site. Amazon HD reviews had a woman telling about how she was very backed up on multiple computers & hard drives, but they were robbed or burgeled & all of them were stolen including her thesis that was on the computers.
Hard drives aren't that expensive. I just bought a new Western Digital 1 TB drive for $89.99. I plan to use it to back up the Seagate that is getting noisy & then maybe alternate them.
Also, when I came back to Mac, I moved practially all of my documents to Mac. I think I just dragged & dropped or something. Photos, Office, & pdfs do fine that way. & then you could back them up to a couple of different external drives & remove from your MacBookAir.
Unfortunately I think most of us do not back up until crisis & then it may be too late.
Also use Time Machine. For the 1st time in my computer life, my computer is well backed up--although now realizing the need for redundancy so will start backing up to at least 2 different HDs alternatly.
So, not sure why it isn't working & hopefully you have come up w a solution by now.
I think what I would do in a situation like this, since you can access it on the Windows machine would be to transfer the data to the Windows machine & then transfer it back to a different back up.
I'm looking into backing up what I still have in Windows using a thumb flash drive. I think it should all fit ok now that they have the larger drives & I don't have very much left in Windows format.

  • Issues with External Hard Drives

I hope this is the right forum for this one - please give me a steer if not! I've also posted it in 'Dock and Finder', but this forum seems equally appropriate, if not more so.
I'm getting repeated issues with External Hard Drives, including ones that I have been using successfully for months/years, suddenly failing to mount and then becoming 'unknown device' through the firewire branch of 'About This Mac'.
I've just bought a new hard drive on the grounds that the others had somehow failed, and the same problems are emerging. I decided to Repair Permissions on my iMac's internal drive, and am copying the results below, from repair runs conducted yesterday and today:

    Permissions repair complete
    My concerns are:
    * Some of the permissions repaired yesterday appear to have needed to be repaired again today
    * There are several files which carry a warning that they won't be repaired as they have been 'modified', and some of these clearly relate to disk management.
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on???
    Thanks!!

Many problems with the 10.5.7 update have been fixed by a Restart.
If that doesn't help, something may have gone wrong with the update. Download and install the "combo" update, from: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
If that doesn't help, try running the Apple Hardware Test, on the disc that came with your computer.
    1. Disconnect all external devices (including the Ethernet cable) except the keyboard and mouse.
    2. Insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with your computer.
    3. Restart while holding down the "C" key. When the list of available startup volumes appears, click Apple Hardware Test and the right arrow.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen comes up (after a moment), follow the on screen instructions.
    5. If it detects a problem, an error code will be displayed. Make a note of it.

Buy an external drive 320G or larger (much larger is preferable). I do not recommend you use TM for this, instead download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and make a clone of your drive. Once this is done you have 2 choices, you can download and install Lion on your internal drive just as you planned or download and install Lion to the external clone, the 2nd method allows you to test the Lion install before committing to it. If the clone with Lion is to your liking then just clone it back to the internal.

  • Itunes will not associate with my music folders on an external hard drive

I moved all of my music on both libraries for two separate Ipods onto an external hard drive. Now when I open Itunes neither one of the libraries comes up. I have tried holding down the shift and choosing a library but it does not open. I am beyond frustrated, please help.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
To create or open an alternate iTunes library click the icon to start iTunes and *immediately press and _hold down_ the shift key (option for Macs)* until asked to create or choose a library. Click Choose and browse to the .itl file you want to open.
The normal layout for an iTunes library is a folder called iTunes which has some library database files in it and a folder for media called *iTunes Media* or *iTunes Music* (if created pre iTunes-9).
If you move the main iTunes folder elsewhere so that the relative path from the library to the media is unchanged then open using the shift-start-iTunes method then usually the library will carry on working as if nothing has happended.
If you just move the iTunes Media/iTunes Music folder to a new path then immediately update the iTunes preference for the location of the iTunes Media folder then sometimes it will sort itself out, but often it won't. In this case move the media folder back where it came from, open, test & close the library, then go back and move the whole iTunes folder.
If the media folder has previously been moved from inside the iTunes folder by changing the location of the media folder and then consolidating to the new location it gets more complicated. In this case the library files can usually be moved to the parent folder of the media folder, leaving the absolute path to each file unchaged but re-esatablishing the normal arrangement of library folder enclosing media folder. Once done the whole parent folder can then be renamed or moved as desired.

  • How to backup external hard drive to another external hard drive using time machine ?

    Hello,
i have an external hard drive which i store all my drum samples and sound library on and files are contantly changing, adding new sounds, deleting old ones etc ..
So my method of back up as of now is to just copy all the edited files and click and drag to the back up disk.
Now, my question is, how do i back up my external hard drive to another external hard drive using time machine ? I read somewhere that you can do this, i cant find the post however. It would be nice to automate the back up process rather than manually finding the files to copy over.
    Thanks in advance !

The question you pose is conditional, in that you should have more than an exact
capacity replacement for a clone, if the drive you are going from (or one going to)
has insufficient free space and that has a bootable clone on the drive; any space
tied up in a partition for Time Machine backup, takes away from the running space
if you should need to run the computer from a clone on the external HDD's other
partition.... Better to have a good capacity of additional reserve unused free space.
Be sure any clone copy that you hope to use as a re-close, that each in turn is tested
after a clone operation. Also consider using each running system's Disk utility and
have First Aid 'repair disk permissions'. Preparation of a new drive or even an old
drive that may have questionable artifacts or errors on it, should be reformatted. To
even go as far as Secure Erase (overwrite) at least one-pass before reformatting it
    again, could help.
However, I'm not sure if the drives and situation you are looking at would necessarily
be a good match. It could work, but you'd need a reasonable size partition or hard
disk drive for a system. Snow Leopard and all its associated applications, can do
OK in a 100GB HDD. (My computers have more storage capacity than is used; so
for mine to have 60% free space, is good.) Virtual Memory is drive space used by
OS X, that can be a substantial amount for swap and temp files. Some applications
make duplicates of works-in-progress, for each change in an open file; that adds up.
{This question (& my reply) should've been in their own thread & not at the end
    of one that is nearly three months old, + marked 'solved' by the original poster.}
So I guess I don't have a direct answer to your question; having just returned from
a few hundred miles and automobile issues, too. I'm not really thinking on-topic...
The clone should be on its own separate drive, and up to 3TB drive dedicated to
Time Machine may be overkill, however that software will consume old backups first
when it uses up all the space. Or usually that is what happens in TM backups. If
that isn't happening, there may an issue in how Time Machine is set up.
    Good luck & happy computing!
