Methodology for implementing SECURITY on Oracle Applications 11

Hi,
I wonder if anyone could indicate me any documentation that brings the best-practices in implementing SECURITY (users-profiles)on OA11.
For example, a step-by-step methodology:
* Identify your users
* Define the user-profiles
* Match each user profile level with its affect on the way applications run.
* Match the user profile option with its description.
* etc...
This is URGENT!!!!
I would be THANKFUL for any indication!
If possible, please copy the [email protected] e-mail address.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Jail,
What release of Oracle Apps are you running 11.5.x (provide us with the value of x). dcmctl is available only on latest releases of Application Server viz., 10g and not available in iAS 10222 RP4.
I believe your iAS version should be anywhere below 10222 RP4, reason you couldnt find dcmctl.
For changing the ports, there are two options.
1. Update s_webport value to the new port number in the context file ($APPL_TOP/admin) and run autoconfig.
2. Update the new value manually in the following files:
a. httpd.conf
b. $COMMON_TOP/admin/portal/<sid>_<hostname>/aplogon.html
c. context file
Prefered method is option 1, since if you run autoconfig in the future without changing the value in the context file, all the configuration files will reflect the old value.
cheers,
Ram.

  • Query retrieval limit for discoverer reports in oracle applications

    Hi,
I would like to set the query retrieval limit for discoverer reports in oracle applications. Can i have the steps for the same?
    Cheers
    Maytas

    Hi Maytas
As Michael said the query retrieval limit can be defined by Discoverer Administrator
    like :
    - Discoverer Administrator >> Tools >> Privilege >> Select the user that will see the workbook >> Query Governor tab and there you setup the query retrieval limit.
    Note:
Normally if you defined the limit for the user via Discoverer Administrator it should work but i saw that this was not happened in my case when i open Viewer so i entered with my eul owner on Discoverer Plus and defined the limit for all the workbooks
Tools >> Options >> Query Governor >> Limit Query retrieved data to

    Hi,
we have several developers working with developer suite 10g. Our OAS runs on Linux as yours. All our developers work locally using windows-pc's. We have a samba share we use to move the developed sources to the linux box. On the linux box with have some scirpts to compile the sources and move them to the runtime-directory.
The final integration test in then done using the installed application on the oas.
This works without having any problems for more two years now.
btw: Be aware of the problems you will run into when moving an application from windows to linux:
    -> All filename ar Case-sensitive
-> the writing of module-names in OPEN_FORM, NEW_FORM, CALL_FORM must match exactly the filename (in other words: call_form, open_form and new_form is also case-sensitive
-> Attached librarys are also case-sensitive, even if there are shown in uppercase in the module-navigator.
    hope this helps.

  • Script to create synonyms for the tables of Oracle Applications

    Team,
For Oracle Applications 11i on W2K, where might I find a script to create synonyms for all of the application tables? I would think there would be a standard script somewhere in one of the directories created during the install or on the CDs.
    Thanks,
    Luther

John, it is ssome sort of a bleed, but in this case it's not the part that 'might be cut off' that matters; it's the part that still needs to be on the page. Yes, I meant it to be (virtually) not-noticeable for the casual reader. Of course you can make it part of the page design, that ought to ease up matters.
The amount pages shift horizontally because of binding is called "creep", and this depends on the type of binding and the thickness of the paper. You cannot adjust for creep unless you know exactly how much this is and how your book is going to be printed and bound.
    Airkite:
But the book that you printed worked out alright? Was it done with a different method?
This was a simple outlined text, not an image. Through the inaccuracies of printing and binding combined, there were no straight edges *anywhere* but fortunately the lines were thick enough to let you mentally connect them
This was done (I'm sure) with the method you proposed.
There is an alternative way, but it's way more expensive (on the other hand, the result is impressive): after the entire process of printing, binding, and cutting, books are put in a clamp one at a time and fed through a silk screen printer, fore edge on top, and printed with whatever you like.
I know of the existance of this technique but I haven't seen a book done like this in years and have no clue at all of the costs involved (writing that down in one sentence makes me realize those two might be connected).

  • How to secure Oracle Applications?

i have implemented security mechanisms in the database, but i would like to know how to implement security in an application rather than doing so through the database?
    Thank you

    Hi Kiranjaly!
Basically there are some things to keep in mind:
When you put security in the application you still need to protect the data - as somebody could choose not to use the application to get access to the data (eg using SQLPlus).
Furthermore it would be a great idea to have a link between authentication and authorisation. My bet is to place the authorisation information in the OID (LDAP) as this is used for the authentication as well (SSO).
And of course you need auditing in the database, the application server and in the application.

  • Implementation methodology for medium sized clients

    Hi Friends
I know there is ASAP methodology for Implementations(BW) which takes lot of time to go thru each and every step for which the medium sized clients cant afford(money).
Can anyone comeout with a new customized implemetation methodology for medium sized clients which will be of great helpful....
    Points will surely be awarded

    Hi Hari,
Here is the start. If you're asking for a customized implementation, specifically BW, you could probably draw some conclusions from the implementations that you have been through. For something that is not a "cookie-cutter" implementation from company to company, one thing to think about is:
<u>Use people close to the business that can help you clarify their needs.</u>
Instead of only using a system development lifecycle (SDLC) approach to getting the requirements, meet with the business users once a month and demo what you have built. In the beginning it might just be demo of standard content, but after a while you can solicit feedback on layout and design that will assure a system that is more aligned with the users needs. It also provides the users with a great way to interact with your team. BW projects should not be “dark horses” where requirements goes in one end and a solution emerges a few months later they may, or may not, meet the requirements. We do not build data warehouses; we are doing data warehousing (an active and interactive process).
    Best of Luck

  • Informations about Oracle Application Express

    Hello,
for my company I have to do a complete comparison of four tools which can be used for creation of GUIs:
    - Oracle Application Framework
    - Oracle Forms
    - Oracle Application Express
    - Microsoft .NET Framework
Here in this topic I search for some facts about the ApEx:
    - How does it work (language, tools, ...)
    - Performance vs. the other three
    - Integretation into E-Business Suite
    - Possitbilites of the GUI
    - Screenshots, Links, etc.
    thx a lot

The goal is to build a GUI where you can handle Tabledate, etc. Well you can certainly very easily do that with APEX.
As for the disadvantages/advantages, what I would suggest is -
    Option 1
    Use -
    1) OTN (plus other Vendors websites)
    2) OTN Forums/Google Groups etc
    3) Google to find other sources (but with extreme care to validate/verify your sources)
To research the information on your own. Unless you have experience of the products yourself, then this area is fraught with potential problems, as you are effectively quoting information that you have not verified yourself (hence the need to be very satisified that you trust the source of the information).
    Option 2
Contact a respective expert in each of the technologies asking them to cite advantages and disadvantages of the tool they use.
Again, there is a potential for 'bias' here, so you need to make sure that your 'source' is objective enough to be able to provide realistic disadvantages of the tool (at least in the context of your question)
    Option 3
By far the best option in my view -
Try and find someone who has used both/some/all of the tools you're trying to compare. Once again it needs to be someone who's opinion you can trust (otherwise what is the point?).
The most difficult thing about having 2 people comparing products A and B, is that the person extolling the virtues of product A might not know that product B actually makes certain things easier and vice-versa. By having someone who has used BOTH products discuss the pros and cons then you get a much more 'real-world usability' view of the benefits and drawbacks.
Just my thoughts, hope they help.
    John.

  • Running Forms on oracle Application 10g(9.0.4) on terminal Server

oracle application Server Installation guide for windows states that
Oracle Application Server is not supported on Windows operating systems that
include Terminal Services (for example, Windows NT Terminal Server Edition and
Windows 2000 with Terminal Services are not supported).
My Remarks : It means Oracle Application server cannot be installed on the Windows server on which Windows Terminal Services are on.
Please consider the following deployment scenario
    Server 1
    OS : Windows 2000
Software Installed : Oracle Database 10g
    Server 2
    OS : Windows 2000
Software Installed : Oracle Application Server 10g(9.0.4) on which Forms and Reports are deployed
    Server 3
OS : Windows 2000 as Terminal Server
Software Installed : IE 6.0 , that will act as Client Machine.
    I have following Queries
    1. Oracle does not allow OAS installed on Terminal Server, will it allow Terminal Server( Server 3) to act as Client and to run web base forms and reports on it.
    2.
In case It allow to run forms and reports on Terminal Server ( Server 3) does it means thin client machines connected to Terminal Sever can access Forms and Reports.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ankur Diwan

The bottom line is that we don't certify running Forms using the features of a terminal server to serve up any part of those Forms. That doesn't mean it does not work, but its not certified or supported.

  • How to Manage Oracle Applications - Info Available

    Check this site :
    http://www.oracle.com/appsnet/technology/managing/content.html
Contains White Papers, Presentations, Technical Overviews, FAQs for managing and maintaining Oracle Applications.
The Presentations are lucid and extremely useful.
    Best Wishes

Manging Oracle on Linux is no more difficult than managing Oracle on Windows.
Managing Linux is about the same difficulty as managing Windows. Both require a degree of understanding of the environment. Once you are comfortable with the environment and the terminology / language used, you should have no big problems.
I think the biggest challenges in Linux are
    - a different set of editors than you have used
    - a lot more time in the command line and writing batch scripts
    - Microsoft has many of the nix command capabilities but with enough changes (cp -> copy) to be confusing (remember, nix came first <g>)
    - the idea of 'C:, D:' drives is totally gone ... in *nix there is no 'drive', it's all just 'files'
There are several GUI utilities to help 'manage' Linux. These may not be very useful when working with Oracle environment as they tend to relate to a file-oriented (or fire server) computing environment, not a database environment. However, you might want to search the web for 'WebMin' as a possibility.
I encourage you get a good basic reference. One I like, although dated, is Essential System Administration

  • What are the different options for implementing web security?

    Hi,
Right now I am working on an internet website. We are using JSP for presentation and running Weblogic Application Server. I want to know different options for implementing website security. One of the options that I am aware of is to use LDAP. But we donot want to go and buy a LDAP Directory Server now. So I would really appreciate if somebody could let me know my choices here.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
If you are working on a Windows 2000 platform, the most obvious choice would be Active Directory Server as this is shipped free with Server 2000. It is LDAP compliant, although does have a few differences that set it apart from the other X500 standard based solutions which I will mention in a moment. Details on these differences can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnactdir/html/msdn_activedirvsnds.asp
Other options are openldap, an open source implementation of an ldap server or iPlanet's Directory Server. If you are initially doing an evaluation, a trial version is available of the iPlanet software and can be downloaded from their site. I found this particularly easy to get to grips with and their is excellent documentation available. There is also an offering from Novell, but I have no experience of this.
    Hope this helps.

  • Implementing Function Security in Oracle apps.

I wanted to restrict certain menus in Payables manager for a particular user. How should i implement it? Is there any live example of implementing function security in oracle apps? Please Help.

    Hi,
One approach is to create a custom menu and attach to it all the menus and functions you want and the add this menu to a new responsibility. But this is not the best way to solve the issue because you have to define different menus + responsibilities for each different user. Other way is to create roles which can be assigned to users.
