Methods of restore

What are the various methods of restoring/reseting an iphone?
I know you can reset by holding the sleep/wake and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
And I know a restore can be done via iTunes.
Are there other ways?

You may have to read about a few things to be sure the path to restoring the original system and/or any purchased upgrades to the MacBook Pro are correctly available and reinstalled. The methods vary somewhat based on if you could use local recovery or internet recovery. Some of both may apply, depending on how the MB/Pro was set up and upgraded after purchase.

  • Since the FF8 update, all bookmarks were lost and none of the recommended methods for restoring lost bookmarks work; I always get "Unable to process to backup file" even though the backup .json files still exist

Since a FF8 update, all bookmarks were lost and none of the recommended restore methods work, even though I have been able to find the backup ".json" files; I continually get "Unable to process the backup file" for all methods of importing or restoring the bookmarks from the .json files. As others note, I can also no longer add any new bookmarks to my now empty bookmarks tab. My profile has not changed, so that's not the problem. This is really a pain.

  • Which is the best Method for Restoring a Backup in a Secured manner?

    Dear Legends,
I got a requirement/scenario to restore a backup of Oracle 11gR2 database. Imagine that I'm not aware of the database files and how the backup was taken by someone else. Now I would like to restore it, let me know how and securely the backup can be restored without disturbing the existing environment.
So for I have crossed the doc
    1. "Introduction to Backup and Recovery"
    2. Oracle Distilled
    3. "www.myoracleworld.net - Installing 11GR2 on redhat 5U5 64-Bit"
Is there a valid restore document covering only RESTORE a Database using RMAN with oracle Docs?
    My Understanding:
    1. Using RMAN RESTORE command we can restore the database.
    2. A Valid/Consistent backup should be available to restore database in any format which RMAN Understands.
    3. Needed Backup files - SPFile, Control File and Data File
Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.
    Questions:
    1. What are the things I need to consider before restoring?
    2. What are the Questions/Info that I need to gather ?
    3. Need to Collect ASM Details if any?
    Thanks,

  • Standard Proxy Deleted:Method To Restore

    Hi guys,
From the transaction code SPROXY, I was supposed to regenerate the standard proxy so that the changes made on the PI end for the same interface reflect in ECC as well. But my mistake I deleted the standard proxy and when I try to create the proxy with the standard prefix,it is asking for an access key.
So,I gave prefix as Z,and created but then because of the mismatch in prefix,it is showing an error message saying the namespace is not the same.
Please help me out. Is there any procedure to restore the standard proxy without the access key?or what are the other alternatives?
    Vishwa.

    Hi VJ,
It is not accepting developer access key, I think we need to give object access key.
And I have another issue right now, when I right click on CreditCommitmentMessage and say Check Proxy,it is displaying an error as "Unable to find software component version for namespace http://sap.com/xi/FSCM/Global".
Earlier, I deleted by mistake and created a New DTE_CreditCommitmentMessage which is the root node of CreditCommitmentMessage,I understand that this is not the standard one and can be created as well. But since then, I am getting this issue.
Could someone throw some light on this?
    Vishwa.

  • HT4927 Why can't we restore a single photo in iPhoto anymore?

The loss of this functionality has been anoying and I sincerely hope that Apple brings it back someday. It makes Time Machine a lot less useful for customers and also potentially leads to the loss of more data. It used to be that you could restore a single image, say that was acidentally deleted. Now if you were to restore the entire iPhoto Library with Time Machine, you'd get the one image back but lose every other image you added since then. That make no sense. Of course Time Machine will ask if you want to overwrite thr iPhoto Library or duplicate and keep the original, but how many people are going to know they should keep the original? And if you have a large library you may not have the space. Even if you did dupe the Library you would then need to Open the restored Library (hold option while opening iPhoto and select the Library), find the image you want back, copy it out of the old Library, quit iPhoto, re-open iPhoto with the existing Library, re-add the photo you want to restore. Way too many steps.
There is another workaround that I will share here, but it too is too complex for many people. Bottom line Apple needs to bring back the old method for restoring iPhotos using Time Machine.
Here's how I would restore a single image in iPhoto with Time Machine. I personally also make an extra backup of the iPhoto Library before using this method, just in case.
    Go to ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library
Right+Click the iPhoto Library and choose 'Show Package Contents'
    Click the 'Originals' alias
Now you should see a bunch of folders organized by year
    Activate Time Machine
Browse back to find the image you want to restore. The folders go by year > month > day. After that the folder and image names are cryptic, but you can use the previews to find the image you want to restore.
Select it and restore it with Time Machine.
I would then move the image out of the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library package folder and re-add it manually to iPhoto.

There is a way if you know the photo's file name but not fast.
1 - download and launch Find Any File
2 - select the Time Machine drive and search for the file name.
3 - you'll get several hits in each library backup, i.e. the original, thumbnail, preview and editied version.
4 - make sure you choose the file in the Originals or Masters folder and drag from the search results window to the Desktop.
Due to the nature of the backup structure the search can take a while.
Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html to bring back the single photo restore.

  • Contacts Lost on iPod 4 Running 5.1.1 - Cannot Fully Restore

Hello and thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to help me resolve this frustrating issue.
I am using an iPhone 4 Model MD146LL with OS 5.1.1. My carrier is Sprint.
Several days ago I attempted to make a call by using the Phone icon.
The call dialog window opened for a split second, then closed and left me back at the desktop. This happened the same way on the three subsequent tries to make a call.
I then tried Voice Control, and again the VC screen appeared for a split second and disappeared.
I performed a soft restart using the power button on the top.
When the phone came back up in a few seconds, every one of my contacts was gone.
All phone numbers were still visible in the call and messaging logs.
Everything else about the phone appeared fine except for the missing contacts.
I did a little research and saw that the most common resolution was to do a restore from a backup.
Now as to my situation with iCloud. I had never had occasion to use iCloud until four or five days prior to this happening when I wanted to transfer several images from my PC to the iPhone. I installed the app on my PC and it worked fine. The images synched to my phone and I was all set. I never opened the iCloud app on my phone during this process, nor had I ever opened it prior to looking to resolve the contact issue.Part of the suggested method of restoring was to go into iCloud and verify the backup and sync settings. To my great surprise every backup setting was turned off (I assume by default as I had never even been in iCloud settings before) except for Docs & Data and Find My iPhone. In the Storage & Backup section iCloud Backup was turned on.
I then preceded to follow the instructions I located on several sites including this one to Reset the phone, and restore from an earlier backup.
This seemed to work fine and the phone went through all the steps of a reset, prompting me to restore from an iCloud backup which I found dated two days prior to the first problem. I selected it and the restore continued with the expected duration showing along with a progress bar. After about 20 minutes I swiped the unlock to check the progress and the desktop was now showing along with a message telling me to continue my backup with WiFi which I did.
    Then nothing else would happen.
I now had a phone with all my contacts still missing, although the logs were still there, and dated to the restore date.
Additionally, every single app I had downloaded or purchased was missing, along with all my photos. The photos showed the correct number in each folder, and even had gray box icons where the images should have been.
After researching a little more, I checked the iCloud settings under Storage & Backup and the message Stop Restoring iPhone is there and the message says it is currently being restored. I left it overnight but the next morning nothing had changed.
At this point I was leery of doing more harm than good on my own and visited an Apple store. The rep I spoke to was less than enthusiastic and in so many words told me it was a known issue on OS 5 and that I could restore it. I retold my story in case he missed the whole point of my already trying the steps he was proposing. He then suggested that it might be due to the phone losing WiFi and that I should try again and then proceeded to try to sell me a new phone.
I decided to try to work the problem again again and have followed the same procedure several times, using all three backup dates available all ending with the same result described above.
I had thought that the 3G network might be taking over and bumping the WiFi as a couple times I noticed a quick service indicator switch between the two when I unlocked my phone. So I took the phone to a location where there is no 3G access ( we live in a rural area) and performed the restore again. The only difference now is I can't activate my phone with Sprint. So I have a brick at this point.
One last thing to note: I checked if I had ever backed up via iTunes and I had not either by iCloud or onto the PC. (I know shame on me but when we got the phone we were told about the wonderful iCloud service taking care of all that for me.)
I believe that about covers the problem and my steps to remedy. I again thank anyone who might suggest a solution. Please let me know if there's more information I might need to provide or anything that might need to be clarified.

That is exactly what I have been doing. Which is what the rep at the Apple Store suggested I do as well.
However, I end up at the same place where the phone stops restoring, but there is a button in iCloud under Storage & Backup that says Stop Restoring iPhone - This iPhone is currently being restored and will automatically back up when it is done.
So the restore never fully finishes - that was the point I was making when the rep suggested a drop in WiFi due to 3G taking over or another issue. The entire time I have tried the latest restore the phone had been within 10 feet of my wireless router and there has been no downtime.

  • Restoring Preview from Time Machine

Preview has become unusable for me over the last week. Preview froze when trying to open a pdf and I forced it to quit. Now, every time I open preview it uses all available RAM and freezes.
I've tried shift clicking to open preview "fresh", but this didn't solve the problem. I've tried restoring preview from a previous time machine backup before the problem started, but this didn't help either. I'm guessing that preview settings (like which documents to open at start up) are stored outside of the preview.app container.
Where are the system files for preview stored outside of the preview.app container? I'm hoping I can restore these files from a previous time machine backup. Alternatively, any other method of restoring preview would be much appreciated.

For anyone else that has this problem the folder to delete is Library > Containers > com.apple.Preview

  • How can I restore lost voicemails after iOS 5 update?

I've seen a lot of posts of this sort, but I've been trying to fix this issue for months and I really need some experienced help... When I updated my phone to iOS 5, I received a message saying my phone couldn't be restored because the backup was encrypted--I had neither requested nor set a password for this encryption. The phone now had none of my information on it, notes, texts, voicemail. I panicked, called Apple, and they helped me find a way to restore the notes from files in iTunes, which is a relief because I'm a writer and had a lot of work in there.
However, the phone started asking me for a voicemail password that to my knowledge, I had never set. I tried a few passwords and attempted a few other methods of recovery, all to no avail. So I reset my voicemail password, as all the online literature I could find suggested. However, the "password is incorrect, please enter your password" prompt then no longer showed up. After long deliberation I set up visual voicemail over again, but to my dismay I no longer have any saved messages.
At this point I have lost over a year's worth of text messages and voicemails. Some of these were incredibly important to me. I would love to recover all of it if possible, but I particularly care about the saved voicemails. Some of these were from my girlfriend during a difficult time in our lives and I really need them back. I also lost important texts from my girlfriend, best friend, and siblings, but the most important thing is the voicemails.
Nothing I'm concerned about is more than a year old, but there are around five or six voicemails I need. No, there is no deleted folder from which I can undelete messages, I know how to do that. My phone is not yet jailbroken but I'm not against doing it if it will allow other methods of restoration to be attempted. I do some coding myself and I'm not daunted by the prospect of sifting around in my computer's files and command line, by the way. I still have all the itunes backups, although half of them are still encrypted with an unknown password. I will pretty much try anything to get these messages back.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know of no way to remove encryption on iTunes backups if you've forgotton the password.  If you've used the 4 digit PIN code to lock your iPhone in the past that can sometimes default as your "password" for this encryption in iTunes.  Try that PIN or any PIN you've used in the past.  If you don't use a lock maybe you played around with that feature once when you first got your phone....try "1,2,3,4" or anything you could have possibly tried.
As far as accessing older unencrypted backups you can try this software.  I do not have any experience using it but it seems like it's what you need and is probably the easiest route for both voicemail and texts:
    http://deciphertools.com/products.html
If you want to try to find voicemails using Terminal, I found this link as well:
    http://mikereys.wordpress.com/2011/10/18/iphone-backup-restoring-visual-voice-ma il/
I know with AT&T, voicemails are only stored on their servers for 30 days so any voicemail older than that you would not have been able to access again.
    Best of luck.

  • Can I restore my bookmarks if they were saved to the same profile on a different computer?

So my mom restored one of our computers without telling me or backing up any of my bookmarks. If I'm signed into the same Mozilla profile on my computer as I was on the one that was wiped, will my bookmarks be in the places.sqlite folder? If they are, how can I access them and restore my bookmarks to Firefox?
I also have two old .json files that I've repeatedly tried to import to Firefox using the "restore" feature and installed Friefox 27 to try to use my recovery key to no avail. Can anyone recommend a method of restoring my bookmarks that I haven't tried yet, or tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thank you in advance!

  • Restoring music from my old iPhone 5 backup to a new iPhone 6

I've just got an iPhone 6 with 64GB memory to replace my old iPhone 5 (with the same 64GB memory). I took a full backup of my iPhone 5 before buying the new 6, and both are using the same iOS 8.0.2 version. My apps are all restored just fine, whether I try a restore from iCloud or my local computer (a MacBook Pro running 10.9.5 and iTunes 11.4 (18). But my music just doesn't get put on the new phone, no matter what I try.
I have a music library of around 4000 songs taking up 19.8GB of space on my old phone. If I restore from iCloud, it only downloads songs I have bought from the iTunes music store. If I restore from my local backup on iTunes, it copies around 1000 songs before crashing (done twice so far) - and when I try and sync again it halts at 'preparing to copy items' and happily does nothing for hours on end (left it overnight last night, no discernible difference in terms of the amount of music on the phone).
I'm trying exactly the same method of restoring from my local backup that I used a few months ago after I had to get my iPhone 5 repaired by Apple. But nothing seems to be working. I can use iTunes match (which I have on my computer, but never used on my iPhone 5), but then I have to download all the songs via the internet that I could just sync a lot faster over my local wifi connection.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to restore the music on it?

Correction: the message that iTunes hangs at for hours on end was "Waiting for changes to be applied".

  • ITunes is wiped clean. I still have my music files. How can I restore?

My laptop has a great habit of switching off dead without warning. No battery alert, no hibernation, just goes off. I presume it's because of an occassion like this that I find iTunes has completely wiped itself. Blank. As if it were installed for the first time. But all the music files remain where they were. So is there any way of restoring the playlists etc?
    Many thanks.

    Hi, Edward.
Something is amiss with your iTunes Library files which are needed for iTunes to know, among other things, the contents of your Music Library, where the files that make it up are located and your playlist and related information.
If you don't have a back-up copy of the .itl file - which would restore your Library - there are a few options for you to consider:
    1) Search your computer for any and all of the .itl files it contains. Each .itl may contain references to a significantly, or completely, different library and following the steps described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base, you can check them and may be able to reconnect iTunes with the particular Library that you're looking for. Close iTunes for a half minute or so before restarting it each time you want to choose a different library file.
At this stage, skip any of the .itl files located in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder ... We'll get back to those, if necessary, in Step 3).
    2) You can rebuild your Library with the procedure outlined in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
You will lose some of your playlist related information (playcounts, dates added, dates last played, etc.) - but will retain most of it (ratings, comments, etc.) - with this method. The actual contents of the Library should be up-to-date.
    3) If you don't like the idea of losing the playcounts and such, have a look at this Knowledge Base article for one other option.
Using this method will restore your iTunes Library to the exact state it was in on the date of the most recent .itl file in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. The drawback is that any changes made since then - songs/playlists added and changes in playcounts, ratings, comments and such - will not be included in the restoration. But it will be easy to add newer songs by following the instructions linked to in Step 4).
    4) One final option is starting all over again with your iTunes Library by by following the instructions in the Add to Library section of this KB article .
This will update iTunes with a list of all the files you add but will not maintain any of your playlists or related information.

  • Can not access Viber messages, photos & videos after making restore from iTunes backup

    Hello Viber Team,
I have sent several help requests about my Viber issue but I did not receive any reply from anyone at viber's support team.
It's highly seems the new viber app v5.1 which released on November 18, 2014 for iOS devices has a bug which deletes all messages and call logs once the app is updated to the new version. Because it requires for re-activation of already active viber account (as a new user) which causes this issue.
As mentioned in viber website, the only effective method to restore in-app viber data is to restore from either iCloud or iTunes backup. I've tried both methods while I had backup from my viber messages in both backups. But after iphone is restored the app, on the first attempt to open the viber app, it crashes and deletes all messages and a popup window appears which asks for re-activation (while the account has already been actived) and I did NOT deactivated or NOT deleted before doing restore).
I have also reviewed the other people's feedbacks in AppStore and it seems that I'm not the only person encountering with this technical issue. I'm  using iPhone 5S with iOS 7.1.2 and tried at least 10 times to retrieve my viber messages by backup restore, and not sure if the device's 64bit SoC has anything to cause this problem.
Please inform me to find a solution for this disaster issue, or at least let me know if you're acknowledged and are analyzing the issue to provide a fix in your next update.
    Thank you.

First, restoring from a backup you made AFTER messing with restrictions isn;t going to help you. Doing so will put the problem right back on your phone. So unless you have an earlier backup - you may not - you will have to restore as a new device.
Second, don't know where you buy your cables but an Apple lightning cable is $19 direct from Apple. Sometimes they're cheaper if you buy from Amazon or other online retailers. And even less if you buy a reputable third-party cable (never buy off brand!).
finally, a new cable does not necessarily mean it works, though that would be unusual. First try resetting your iPhone. This will work even if it's in recovery mode. Simultaneously press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears. Try again to see if the problem persists.
If that works, your good to go. If not, report back. But again, remember, restoring that backup will place the restrictions back on your iPhone.

  • New hard drive - restore vs. transfer from time machine

The hard drive in my MacBook went bad and the shop was unable to salvage any of the data. They installed a new hard drive and installed OS 10.5 from the disk I had.
I have a backup on my TimeMachine device that is probably 2 weeks old and want to restore from that. I was instructed to boot up my MacBook with the TM connected and then do a restore. However, when I do this, I am prompted with a welcome, I pick my language and then it asks me if I want to TRANSFER from a device. I am not given the opportunity to get to the Utilities menu, from which I could do a restore.
From reading the various posts, it appears that you can get to the Utilities menu if you boot up from the Leopard DVD, but I have an OS installed on my drive already.
My question is, if I do a "Transfer", as it's being presented to me, will that result in the same state as that of a "restore" from the utilities menu? If not, should I put in the DVD and boot up from that, even though I've got it installed on my hard drive already?
    Thanks,
    Melba

Yes, tell it you want to Transfer from a Time Machine disk. The word "transfer" can be a bit confusing but it is what you want.
What you're seeing is essentially the same thing the "Migration Assistant" does (which is in the Utilities folder). Migration Assistant was originally created to let Mac users just "move in" to a new Mac if they buy a new machine. It connects to the "old" machine, finds all the applications, user accounts, and a few other things, and then copies them over to the new machine so that everything is all set up and ready for you to go.
When they invited Time Machine, they implemented a restore by putting it into the same Migration Assistant. It sees the latest backup on the Time Machine pretty much exactly as if it were looking at the hard drive of another Mac and it's transferring all the info over to your new hard drive.
Both methods would restore your applications, and ultimately even all your user data. But the advantage of doing it now (vs. letting it finish booting the system and doing it later) is that if you tell it you want to do it later, it'll end up prompting you for your name, etc. and building a user account for you. Then when you try to do a restore via Migration Assistant later (to restore you apps & data) it will complain that an account under that name already exists and to pick another name.
If you just let it run the migration now it will create your user account exactly as it was from the last backup.
