Methods on saving to external drive

I was hoping to use iPhoto (whatever version) to organize photos and have them logged (saved) to an external drive. I do this with all my music for iTunes which has worked out well. When I have my music drive mounted and launch iTunes it has no problem finding these logged files for playback, yet when the drive is not mounted all the music data remains, but obviously not playable. I was hoping there's a way for iPhoto to resemble this? I'm curious to know how others deal with saving their picture albums to external media and retrieve them when needed?

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I think I may have more than one catalog and am not certain how to combine them. Is it best practice to have only one catalog?

Flash CS4 Bug saving to external drive?

I discovered last week when teaching my Flash class that in saving FLAs to my USB drive, and THEN testing/publishing, the AS3 code was ignored in the resulting SWF?EXE files. I duplicated the situation with multiple computers, mutliple external drives and multiple FLA files. I even tried it at differnt locations (home and campus). The problem is only related to CS4 with Actionscipt 3. Both CS3/AS3 and CS4/AS2 test/compile as one would expect. Save the CS4/AS3 file to the internal C: drive and then test/publish everything works fine. Go figure! WHy would the save location make any difference? I thought perhaps it was a PATH environment variable issue, but putting the external drive path in the PATH statement caused no effect.
Here's the information I'm providing to my class tonight. Anyone else encountering the same? BTW, I upgraded to release 10.0.2 but to no avail.
THE PROBLEM:
I think I discovered a pretty major bug in Flash CS4. When creating an ActionScript 3 file (with scripts written on the timeline) and saving the FLA source to an external drive (such as a USB thumb drive) and then testing (Control > Test Movie) or publishing (File > Publish), the AS3 code is ignored in the resulting SWF or EXE. If you save the file to the C: drive and then test/publish, it works fine. I tried this on several computers with several different FLA files and differing script, with several devices including a network drive – all with the same result.
I posted the problem to the ActionScript forum at adobe.com and contacted tech support (via email) but have yet to receive any useful feedback.
SOLUTIONS:
OPTION 1: Save your FLA to the hard drive before testing. You can create a temporary folder on the desktop of the campus computers or should have access to C:\TEMP. So save your files there and at the end of you session, be sure to copy the files (both the FLA and any published files) to your USB for safekeeping. When updating your FLA, first copy it to the internal C: hard drive, then make changes and test, etc.
OPTION 2: AS3 code written to an external .AS file does work when compiled. But this really is beyond the scope of this class and adds a lot of complexity.
OPTION 3: Use Flash CS3 – works fine in CS3, but of course you can’t use any of the cool new CS4 features such as new motion tweening, and inverse kinematics (IK bone structures).

ITunes unable to locate music files saved on external drive

Hi all,
This is proabably something incredibly simple but my iTunes was installed on to my laptop wih music added till my memory was all used up.
So I bought an external drive, and re-added all my music saving it to the external drive, my iTunes however remained installed directly on my laptop.
This worked fine initially as long as my external drive was selected in the Preferences section of my Itunes, but recently all my albums are available but it says that Itunes is unable to locate the files, even though none of them have been lost or deleted from the external drive.
Ive tried everything I can think of - does anyone know how to rectify this?

I switched computers and tried to reload all my backed up itunes files. It loaded the files fine the first time. After I logged off the files disappeared from my Itunes. Apple tech told me to add itunes folder to library. It worked fine until i logged off again. I tried it several times because my files never stayed on itunes. Finnaly I added two new CD's into my library and I went to file Libray and I entered consolidated Library. This brought everything I had before and then some to my itunes library. I logged off, shutdown and even hibernated and my files still remain. I was able to create playlist, my movies, podcast, there all there. Hope this helps.

I have been saving my tunes on an external disk. I now have a new system. I went in to edit->preferences advanced tab and changed the Itunes Media Folder Location to my external location. I've done this before and seem to remember doing something else but can't remember what.

You need to learn how to type in "external drive" into the search box of the Support pages on this site for iTunes. Once you learn that you will find nifty articles such as this one...

Itunes old library saved on external drive wont open

I have an old library file of itunes music saved on an external hard drive. Unfortunately now it wont open due to upgrading my laptop. Any ideas please would be welcome.
I get the error message "itunes was not installed correctly . please reinstall itunes. Error 7".
This is depsite having the latest version of itunes installed and other songs working fine.

IPhoto folder (saved on external drive) greyed out

Help! I have recently purchased a WD My Book external (cloud) drive. About a month ago, I moved my iPhoto library there, and everything was working perfectly. I've just tried to open iPhoto, and it's not automatically loading that library. When I try to navigate to the external drive to select it, the iPhoto folder is there, but it's greyed out...and it won't let me select it. (I have the WD2go app on my phone, and can see that my photos are still there...phew!) I have restarted both the external drive and my laptop.
I'm still a relatively new Mac user...and am very new to the world of external hard drives/networks/clouds, etc.
Any help would be really appreciated!!!

iPhoto keeps it's iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder, it's really not designed to be moved.
So what happens is iPhoto opens up and it's program looks for it in the Pictures folder and it's not there. It likely created a new one in the Pictures folder with nothing in it.
I don't know how to tell iPhoto to look on the external drive, change to that location,
But I can tell you the iPhoto Library (on the external drive too) is actually a folder, right click on it (or control click) and a menu pops up with "open package contents" and inside is a folder called Originals with all your pictures inside.
Post your question in the iPhoto forum and they likely have a few cool tricks up their sleeve.

Saving to external drive

I am trying to save my FCE movie to an external drive, but everytime I go to 'save as" and choose my output, it's saying this file is lock. How do I unlock file to save it.

If you can export to your internal HD without problem it should be a problem with your external drive. How is it formated? (use command-i on external hard drive icon to get infos) It should be Mac OS extended (journaled or not) *and not* FAT 32.

Can you run apps saved on external drives? Is it possible to run them and save your app data only to the external drive?

1. It varies depending on the application; ones which used an installer as opposed to drag-copying them to the Applications folder may not run.
2. If the folders containing it are stored on the external, yes. This may require creating symbolic links or putting the entire home folder on that drive.

I have various older iphoto libraries that I've saved on external drives. When I open any of them, iphoto opens with my current library. How can I view these older libraries?

You're opening them by double clicking on them? In iPhoto 08 that opens the last opened library.
Try Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'...

Can't import pic's when I save my movie to an external drive

Hi,
When my Movie is saved to my Macintosh HD I can import pic's with no problem from iPhoto through the media pane in iMovie. Then when I save the movie file to my external HD (becasue these movie files get so big) I can't import pic's anymore. The import files dialogue box shows up, then the pic flashes in the timeline for a split second and then it disappears, or it will show up in the timeline as an all black image, but no pic. It must be something to do with my external HD, but what? Are movie files in iMovie usually saved to external drives with no problems, or is this a common occurence? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. The external drive is formatted MS-DOS File System (FAT32). I had to do this because I had problems with it at first when I was using it interchangeably with a Mac and a PC. When it was Mac formatted it wouldn't be compatible with my PC for some reason (or I could read files, but couldn't write - something like that). Any suggestions?

By backing up the iTunes Library via saving the iTunes folder on an external drive, is it also backing up all iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from your devices?

If I backup my iTunes Library by saving the iTunes folder on an external hard drive using the instructions contained in the link below, will it also back up all my iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from my devices? Furthermore, when it is time to restore the iTunes folder I copied to my external drive to a new iTunes program on my new computer, how will it merge the information once I plug in my iPad or iPhone to that new laptop to sync? If I did the iTunes library backup a couple months ago and I've added documents/music/pictures on my devices since then, what will happen when I try to sync it with the new laptop now working off of the iTunes library backup from a couple months ago since the information is no longer the same? Which information will dominate and thus be kept? Will it delete the new information/data/pictures/documents/music off of the devices since it is not on the iTunes program when it syncs?

It would be a good idea to look into a bigger hard drive. They are not that expensive any more and can save a lot of headach. This is even more important if you are buying music from the iTunes music store. If you lost those files they are gone.
The point of having it on your PC and iPod is to have a backup. If the iPod fails, or you need to go back to the DVDs and find they are scratched, or just can not be read you have lost days of work converting and organizing all of those songs.
Or the iPod could hard drive could fail and then you will have to try to bring all of those files back from DVDs. You end up with a mess since some songs will probably be on multiple DVDs, have different names ect. Trying to reorganize it all can be a pain.
