Methods to Back up iCal Calendars

I'm researching 3 methods of backing up my iCal information.
1.) Choosing "Back up Database" from the File menu in the iCal application. This creates a .icbu file with the date attached for you to save in any location you specify.
2.) Choosing "Export" from the File menu in the iCal application. This creates a .ics file of the specific calendar you selected for you to save in any location you specify
3.) Copying the entire "iCal" folder from ~Library/Application Support/. This will include the files: (nodes.plist, Sources, sync.plist, todos-info.plist)
My question: Is there a difference in these three methods? If I restore from method #1 vs. #2 vs. #3 will my results be different?
Why I'm asking: I'm using Retrospect to back up all my data to an external drive periodically. By using Retrospect, I'd have to use method #3 since it's an automated task.
Thanks in Advance,
Al
PS> I have the same question in regards to the Address Book database.

I figured it out

  • Cannot get iCal calendars from Mobile Me back on laptop and iPhone

After completing the latest MobileMe upgrade, I lost all my iCal information on my laptop. I was relieved to see it still on MobileMe online, but now I cannot get it back onto my laptop. Have tried through System Preferences MobileMe sync from MobileMe back to laptop many times to no avail. I have also attempted to recover through Preference within iCal, but I do not have the appropriate "Account URL" to set up a new account. How do I find my account URL or get my iCal information back on my laptop. Thank you

    Greetings,
Backup your calendars before you do anything else.
Follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4226Go to "backing up data" and then "Backing up from me.com/calendar"
       2. Go to Apple > System Preferences > MobileMe > Sync and remove the check mark for Calendars -- this is no longer necessary as calendars do not sync with the new MobileMe calendar.
       3. Once you have backed up your calendars for safe keeping follow this article to add your calendars to iCal (be sure to delete any pre-existing MobileMe entries you may have made in iCal > Preferences > Accounts): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4330
    Cheers.

  • HT2513 my iCal calendar that I created with the color green keeps changing to purple.  no matter how many times I change it to green, it turns it back to purple.  Of course this only happens with iCloud and not "from my Mac".  Any ideas?

my iCal calendar that I created with the color green keeps changing to purple.  no matter how many times I change it to green, it turns it back to purple.  Of course this only happens with iCloud and not "from my Mac".  Any ideas on how to correct this?  This seems like a trivial error, but it's super annoying.

I called Apple and they said that they know about this problem.  It's a problem with iCloud which their Engineers know about.  (there was a new iCloud release, hence...)  No ETA for a fix yet.  I asked that this be escalated so Engineering doesn't put it at the bottom of their fix list.  I talked to a Senior Advisor and mentioned to them to have QA check their regression tests as this has happened before to me (the problem just didn't take this long to resolve).  I like to use green too for important stuff, so I've resorted to creating a new calendar using the normal calendar green for events going forward.  They could have picked another color besides green to have this problem with and I wouldn't have been so upset.  ;-)

  • How do I take a calendar (or iCal calendars back online?

Last night, I received an alert that gave me the option to take calendars/iCal offline. Something to do with syncing issues. so I took it/them offline. Now, events that I've changed in my iPhone Calendar app do not show up in iCal on my MacBook Pro. How do I take a calendar (or iCal calendars) back online?

Thank you for your response. Your answer is indeed correct as I have just verified the process you described.
I had tried this several times myself before posting my question but found that both the Go Online and Go Offline options were grayed out, thus unavailable to me. After a MacBook Pro reboot and several Forced Quits and Relaunches of iCal the next day, I was able to Go Online again.
    Thanks,

When I send my ical link to my better half , who sadly, still uses a windows based system- He cannot open the link back to my calendar- any help?

I've been using iCloud since it's inception as "mac.com" or whatever it was called. I've been able to Sync Outlook Exchange Calenars to my iMac, iPhone and iPad. However, I cannot get iCal (when viewed in iCloud) to display Exchange or Google Calender items.
It's odd, all other Mac versions of iCal are happy e.g. iMac, MacBook Air, iPad Air, iPhone etc. But nothing when I login to icloud.com and look at the iCal there.

  • My ical calendars stopped linking.  how do I get them linked back together

My ICal calendars were linked until recently.  I have an Iphone4, Ipad and Imac.  They are no longer linking my Ical events.  I don't know what happened.  I did not change anything.  I have been getting this message popped up on my Imac.... encountered HTTP error 404. Make sure the URL is correct.   I tried to google it but have not been able to figure out how to fix it.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Restore from the backup again?

  • In setting up my ICal calendar I have specific times (as new events) that I want to be included in the print out.  This doesn't happen.

In setting up my ICAL calendar I have specific times (as new events) for each day.  When it prints out the time does not show up (rather its a bar).  I would like the time for each appointment to print out. How do I do this?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • How to make a backup of iCal calendars?

    iCal Help says:
    1. In iCal, choose File > Export > iCal Archive.
    2. Name the backup file and choose where you want to keep it.
Then it makes one file that ends with .icbu (iCal 2012-05-23.icbu)
I'm guessing that it takes all 4 of my color coded calendars and saves them as one archive?
    This document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4707) says:
    -Open iCal
-Select one of the calendars in the Calendar list.
-Choose File > Export > Export.
-Save the file to a safe location
-Repeat for every calendar you want to back up.
Then it makes a file with the name of the individual calendar and .ics (Vacations.ics)
So I have 4 color coded calendars called vacations, freelance, home, work
I would need to do this 4 times.
Anyone know which is the right one?
I'm backing up iCal, Address Book and Bookmarks in prep of moving from MobileMe to iCloud and want to make sure I'm covered.
I also backup to a Time Capsule with Time Machine.
I'm guessing that I can still restore Address book, iCal and Bookmarks from my TC/TM backup and that this is an additional precaution?
    Thanks for any help.

    Susan,
I'm guessing that it takes all 4 of my color coded calendars and saves them as one archive?
Correct, but the archive should be capable of restoring all individual user calendars.
I would need to do this 4 times.
Also correct. This option provides the capability of restoring individual calendars one-by-one.
Anyone know which is the right one?
They are both correct, but I recommend that you use both methods. Having multiple sources available has proven to be useful in some cases.
I also backup to a Time Capsule with Time Machine.
I'm guessing that I can still restore Address book, iCal and Bookmarks from my TC/TM backup and that this is an additional precaution?
Also correct, but there are some additional considerations when restoring from TM which are detailed in this excellent article written by Roger Wilmut.

  • I need to back my entire calendar from icloud. Now I only have montly back ups. what shall I do so i do not erase the icloud calendar?

I need to back my entire calendar from icloud. Now I only have montly back ups. what shall I do so i do not erase the icloud calendar?

    Hey MrZuri,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article provides steps for archiving and backing up various content from iCloud. I have included an excerpt of how to do so for iCloud Calendar:
iCloud: Archiving or making copies of your iCloud data
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4910
    iCloud.com Calendar
This method of backing up starts with publishing a calendar that you can then download to your computer. If your calendar is already on your computer, skip to the OS X or Windows instructions.
    1. Go to iCloud Calendar at icloud.com/calendar and sign in using your iCloud Apple ID and password.
    2. Publicly share a calendar.
    3. Select and copy the URL (web address) from that shared calendar, and paste it to the address field in your browser; do not press Enter or Return yet.
    4. Change "webcal" to "http", and then press Enter.
    5. An ICS file will download to your default downloads location. The calendar can be added to a calendar client like iCal on Mac or Outlook on a Windows PC.
    6. Once the download completes, unpublish the shared calendar.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • ICal Calendar Colors Changing On Their Own; iCloud Connection

    AGGRAVATING PROBLEM:
Many in this forum have written recently about a problem ongoing for people with multiple iCal calendars where iCal calendar colors change "automatically" when you haven't selected those colors, or even "change back" before your eyes to some color your DIDN'T select after you select a new one.  If you log into iCloud on the Web and try to change the color of certain calendars, they refuse to change.  Try as you might, the color you want for your calendar won't "stick" and it is forced to be the wrong color on all your devices.  In some cases, even the names of some of the calendars cannot be changed.  On other calendars in your list, the colors and names will change fine.
Related symptoms:  Calendars you have deleted "come back."   Or, calendars you did not create yourself show up in your calendars list, such as "Calendar" or "Home" or even "Untitled."  Note that the problem seems to be most prevalent with calendars with names "Home," "Work," OR either of these words in the NAME of the calendar.  For instance, "Bob's Work" might get snagged (it can't be deleted without coming back or its color is stuck and "comes back").
I spent a long time on the phone with a helpful Apple senior advanced specialist on this problem today.  We conducted a very large number of "experiments". Our family has two iPads, 2 iPhones, and 2 iMacs, so it was easy to rule things in or out.  I will present some information that may help.
SOME OF WHAT APPEARS TO BE GOING ON:
First, Apple has not resolved this.  But the problem appears to be related to iCloud, and NOT to individual devices.  After de-linking all of my individual devices from iCloud, I could change any of the colors or names at will on any given device, create new calendars and then change their colors to whatever I wish, delete calendars, change names...no problem.  However, after re-linking calendars to iCloud, all the problems mentioned above returned.  The chances that my iMacs, iPhones, and iPads are all causing the problem independently is very low. They also have slightly different OS versions on them, so it is not likely an a particular device OS, though that could be indirectly related.  Also, the colors "change back" within about the same time (usually a few seconds to up to 30 seconds) that it takes to do a "refresh" (i.e. an update) to the iCloud servers.  This when iCloud is turned on, and the absence of it when iCloud is turned off (for calendars), strongly suggests that it is the iCloud server and its interaction with your devices that the fundamental cause of the problem.
Apple has said that they are aware of this problem and their engineers are working on a fix.  Historically, this can mean just a few days, or it could be a few months, years, or "whenever."  They don't give estimates of when it will be fixed.  Exactly WHY this is happening is unclear, but my guess is that it is a modification to the iCloud server code that Apple implemented without testing it thoroughly enough to discover this problem.  Apple does not admit to that, of course and I don't know if I am correct.
A WORKAROUND SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME:
Please note this is a workaround and not a full fix.  Apple needs to run a patch on their iCloud server code.  Until then, I did the following which seems to have worked for me for now.  Read the whole list before deciding whether to proceed.  I don't guarantee it will work in all situations.
Note...I found I was stuck for now with the color of ONE of my calendars.  If you are like me, you want to keep that one and work around it....
Backup first... Make sure that your iCloud copy of your calendar data has the calendar event information you want to save - even if the color is wrong.  Log in at www.icloud.com and do a refresh to sync to the Cloud.  Check over your calendars online to make sure the event data appears to be there for all of your calendars (even if their color or name is not what you want).
    Steps:
    1.     Go to every device that you have linked to iCloud separately. Go into Settings, iCloud, and then uncheck the "Calendars" option.  This delinks your calendars for that device to iCloud.  As you do this on each device, when prompted, select "Keep On My" ..iPAD...iPhone...iMac... etc.  This will preserve the calendar information on the device so it won't be deleted.  I think this is safer, but you can click on "Delete" if you want, too.  Note - if one of your devices is an iMac, with OSX Lion and before, you may be forced (I was) to delete the iCloud calendars from the iMac.  So again, make sure they are backed up to the Cloud first (or somewhere else).
    3.     With the iCloud Calendars Option on all your devices still turned off, go to the WEB and log into iCloud.com.  You need to figure our which calendar iCloud won't let you change the color for.  You probably already know.  On iCloud.com, click on "Calendars," then click open your calendar list and select "EDIT" at the bottom of the dialog box.  One at a time, click on the color dots next to each calendar name and try to change the color (you can put any back after the test if you want). You will probably see a certain one that just goes right back to what you don't want.  This is the one for which the color is stuck, but you may be able to change the name of it now that your devices are unlinked from iCloud.
    4.     Still in iCloud.com, change the names and colors of any of the other calendars you wish to change.  Delete any empty calendars that mysteriously appeared without your wanting them.  Take note of all the calendars, names, and colors that are on the final list of calendars.
    5.     On EVERY device, BEFORE turning iCloud back on on ANY of them: Change the colors and/or names of calendars, delete calendars, etc. so that the calendar names and colors on the device are exactly the same as what you left in iCloud.com in the last step.
    6.   One at a time on each device, go back to Settings and then "iCloud" and check again the box for "Calendars."  You will be asked whether you want to "MERGE" your data with iCloud.  I selected MERGE to ensure I didn't lose anything.  Link each device again into iCloud one at a time.
    7.  When each device is back, go back to iCloud on the Web, or go into iCAL on one of your devices.  Set to view ALL calendars.  Look for duplicates of some of your events.  I found quite several as an artifact of "merging", but in my case it only took me about 5 minutes to go through quickly and delete the duplicates.  It deleted the duplicates on all of the devices at once, so I only needed to delete dups on one device.  I did not find that I lost any events as long as I kept one valid copy.
Again, no guarantees...hope this works for others.  Good luck.

I'm getting the same thing and it's really bugging me! Keeps changing colour to one I do not want and I have tried everything to get it to stay the colour I have chosen!!

  • How do I locate an iCal calendar from a backup and restore?

I need help in restoring a calendar that I deleted. I haven't used Time Machine since May, but I do use SuperDuper and have a clone of my hard drive backed up through yesterday. I am pretty sure the file is there somewhere, I just don't know where or how to get it back into iCal.
    Here is what happened...
*I use Mobile Me to sync my iMac (primary), MacBook and iPhone.*
A week ago I was trying to get my "Sports" calendar subscribed to my daughters old iMac. After reading the forums, the suggestions were to rename the calendar and try again, which I did. Changed it to "Kids Sports" and it seemed to allow her to subscribe, although updates/additions/deletions never made it to her computer. I left it alone at that point, knowing it still wasn't working properly but she had the brunt of her schedule.
Then sometime in the last few days I downloaded a schedule for my child's soccer tournament using my MacBook. It placed 3 games (with all the times, locations, etc) onto my MacBook, I thought wow, how cool, I didn't have to type all the info myself. I have never downloaded a calendar file before.
I noticed a little while later that those 3 games did not sync to my phone or iMac. I investigated and thought the time zone may have been the culprit, I can't remember what was listed but it wasn't a time zone, it was something like "undetermined" or along those lines (can't see it now because the calendar is gone), so I changed each of those 3 events to Central Time manually. Later they show up as 5 hours earlier than Central Time.
Yesterday I open up iCal in the MacBook and it's showing my "Personal" calendar with thousands of duplicate entries that are selected to "never" end, going back to around the year 2000. I have no idea how my "personal" calendar got this way, I haven't changed anything with it. Since I've been working on the "sports" calendar mess. I deleted the events in the "personal" calendar from October 1st going forward, of course everything prior to that is still there. About 4 events listed for everyday and to never end.
I also get a message that I have over 2200 entries that need to be reviewed in iCal before syncing last night. It's the calendar labeled "kids sports". I can see that in iCal I now have 2 sports calendars, "sports" and "kids sports", they both seem to have the same information in them, so I sync with the "kids sports" calendar to be deleted. WRONG answer! All that is left are the 3 events from the calendar I downloaded online, in the calendar labeled "sports".
Everything is already deleted from MobileMe as well.
Soooo, is it possible to pull the "kids sports" file from somewhere in the applications area and put it back where it belongs from my back up?
It seems like once a year I have a major issue with MobileMe duplicating, but I have yet to understand what I am doing wrong!
    Thanks,
    Sandy

    Anyone?
Let us get home from work first
I see my daughter's old iMac still has the "kids sports" calendar showing up with all the info still showing on her iCal, but she is subscribed to that calender versus syncing with it. I'm not sure if she has it set to manually refresh or automatically refresh.
If the calendar shows up fine on her computer the easiest way to get it cleanly is to get it from her computer if that is your goal. I'm assuming this is a calendar you created on your computer and then published and then she subscribed to it?
    _Go to her computer.
_Click on the calendar in question on the left hand side once.
_Go to File > Export > Export and save to the desktop.
_Bring the resulting .ics file to your computer.
_Delete the current kids sports calendar from your computer.
_Double-click the .ics file your brought over and add it to a "New Calendar"
_Now you can re-publish that calendar.
I don't understand why I can't use Superduper! to find the deleted calendar (deleted today and sync'd)
I'm afraid I've never used Superduper! so I can't offer any suggestion there. You may want to ask the maker of that software how to restore from their backups. I use Time Machine. However if SuperDuper! clones your hard drive as you say then all your calendars are stored in Your User > Library > Calendars on that backup.
You don't restore individual Calendars with iCal because it is one large database (in truth you can but it is very time consuming as every single event has it's own individual .ics file). So when you want your calendar from a certain restore point in time (when you made the last backup) you can follow these steps:
    _Quit iCal completely
_Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > iSync
    _Open iSync
_Go to iSync > Preferences and remove the check mark for "Enable syncing on this computer"
    _Reset Sync Services: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627
_Remove Your User > Library > Calendars to the Trash
_Copy the Calendars folder from your backup and put it in Your User > Library where the old one used to be
_Launch iCal and check for your calendars
_If the calendars show up ok go back to iSync and re-check the box for "Enable syncing on this computer"
    Hope that helps.

  • Imbed ical calendar into webpage

is there a way to set up an iweb page so that an ical calendar uploaded to mobileme can be shown? currently, i just have a page that says "click here to view the calendar," but i would like the actual calendar to be shown on the page.

I found a way on my site. You can view it at http://www.lhhsmusic.com/Calendar.html.
In iWeb, choose an html snippit and add this code.
    <iframe width="800" height="1200" frameborder="2" src="+*add in your calendar site here*+" scrolling= "yes">
alternative content for browsers which do not support iframe
    </iframe>
In the code above you will see "add in your calendar site here". In iCal, you must have the calendar you want on your site published with mobileme. In iCal right click on the published calendar name on the left and copy the ULR to the clipboard. Back in iWeb highlight "add in your calendar site here" and paste your ULR. Make sure you leave the parentheses.
Once you publish your website, you will see the calendar on the page you placed it on. Whenever you make a change in your iCal, you should right click on the name of the calendar and refresh.
Whenever you update, it will automatically up date your website.

  • ICal Calendars list blank, MissingSync, MobileMe issues

I'm using OS X 10.4.11 and iCal 2.0.5. I recently installed Missing Sync 6.0.4 for Palm OS (to sync with a Palm TX), so am finally actually using iCal instead of the Palm calendar. I also just got around to resubscribing to .mac (without realizing that I was doing so smack in the midst of the MobileMe launch). I'm listing all three of these questions together in case there's some connection -- most likely something connected to MissingSync or MobileMe setup.
    1. iCal was working fine for me, synched with the Palm via Missing Sync, etc., but now I can't see the list of calendars. I can see events in the calendar itself, color-coded for different calendars, but nothing shows up in the calendars list (left-hand pane). Any ideas how to get that list back?
And two other questions, in case anyone here has answers:
    2. Sent this query to Mark/Space (MissingSync) a couple days ago, but no reply yet -- when I sync Palm and iCal, events entered on the Palm do not get copied to the laptop. No error messages, and all else goes fine ... Events conduit is set for "Synchronize," "All calendars," and to put read-only events in "Unfiled."
    3. Sent this query twice to Mac's MobileMe help, but have gotten only a completely unhelpful form letter with generic links back ... (Yes, I realize their support people are probably utterly bogged down right now.) I used to have .Mac, but expired 1/07. Now have a .Me account. I can't sync at all, even just to my iDisk (let alone with my other Mac) -- .Mac in System Preferences won't let me set up Sync (when I click that tab, it "thinks" for a while, then get a "problem with the sync operation: .Mac login failed" error message). Specifically re: iCal: is there some workaround? Some painless way to sync iCal events to iDisk without a functioning Sync feature? I'm hoping the sync failure is just a temporary glitch, and not a sign that I need to upgrade to Tiger if I want basic .Mac-level functionality, but main thing is just being able to view/use my iCal calendars from my work computer!

Installation continues to degrade. On startup of the application, all buttons and controls are missing.
Closing and restarting iCal causes the buttons and controls to return, but all calendar entries are missing.
Restarting the computer causes the sequence to start again - controls are missing, restarting the app brings them back but then calendar entries are useless.
    Totally useless.

  • Why are my iCal calendars randomly disappearing with all their corresponding events?

Why are my ical calendars randonly disappearing? I updated to Maverick, but one disappeared before I did that update. I have 10 different calendars, each identified by its own color, example: "work" calendar is yellow, my personal calendar is green. Every month or so, one randomly disappears without my even being in the program or changing anything. Along with the calendar ALL its events are gone as well. None of those events show on my iphone, imac, ipad or macboook pro. They just vanish, along with many appointments I have scheduled, and their directions and info. Im SO FRUSTRATED! Im ready to go back to paper.

Got it fixed cal got set for icloud on my iphone. now I can choose them in itunes.
