Methods to install updates days before restart

Firstly, my apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, however I have been unable to find anything solid.
I am implementing software updates via SCCM and my management is requiring me to use the following timing for update:
Catalog is synchronized and updates downloaded Thursday.
Updates are made available and required to be installed on Thursday night.
A restart is not required until the following Monday night, when there is a countdown and then is forced.
I have been trying to make this work however have as yet been unsuccessful, so I was hoping someone could help sort out exactly how this is supposed to work.
From what I have read there are a couple of ways this could be achieved.
Create a deployment with an installation deadline of ASAP, do not allow forced restarts outside a maintenance window, and then create a MW for the Monday night.
Create a deployment with an installation deadline of ASAP, do not allow restarts. Then create another deployment of a restart script (batch or something like Coretech Shutdowntool) scheduled to deploy Monday night to handle the rebooting side of things.
I have attempted the first one however I have had no luck getting the restart to actually occur.  The installation works, but the restart just never happens.  I fear I am doing something wrong, however I am not familiar enough with aspects of the
software to say for certain what is and isn't possible.
Any help or information I could get would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks.

maintenance window would work in your case. You can have the updates installed during the MW and get the clients  restart . You should focus little attention on the maintenance window calculation .
follow these blogs on MW calculation and reboot count down http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2013/06/11/configmgr-2012-support-tip-clients-never-reboot-even-when-required-in-a-deployment.aspx

sorry for my english!

Hey, I have had my intunes soley shut down my computer numerous times, for the past month or so. I realize now it is only within my itunes, but it may not only be itunes. My desktop and a lot of cashed info have been cleared now, as a result of a ton of restarts by completely shutting the power most likely.
I have been too lazy to back up my music because it messes stuff up, and goes so slow it crashes. it will probably work better if I dont even touch itunes and just transfer small parts of my library at a time, not all 120+ gb!
I think a my computer is
               a fried
b my files are terribly corrupted
c or my itunes is compromised
either way, i will back up my music, but what do you think the chances are my music is the culprate, and by backing it up I will have the same problem in the future?
i've been thinking re-installing itunes would be best
let me know....thanks

After having shut down after installing updates, when I restarted and tried to open a word doc, it started opening ALL the word docs and the only way I could stop it was by"force quit"  . This is REALLY annoying!!

May be it is the Resume feature.

Uncheck the box next to      "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".

• Why does install/update require a restart?

Could someone please enlighten/edify me as to why it is that updating Safari requires the machine to restart?

Welcome to the forums!
Because it includes components, like Webkit, that are also relied on by other applications in the system.

• How to manually install updates?

I use Sun Update Manager and there are 110 updates available for now. Among the 110 updates, 37 updates that require manual installation are still on the available updates list after I click the 'Install Updates' button and restart the system. How do I install these 37 updates?

There are a couple of things that could be causing this.
Without more info, its hard to know what.
There are some patches that genuinely require manual handling, but they're not common so 30 odd seems like too many.
Your probably blocked on one manual patch, thats a prereq for the rest.
What kernel level are you currently on. If 118833-36 show up in the list of patches to install then thats the one thats causing the problems. (Or 118855 in the x86 world).
Try "smpatch add -i 118833-36"
followed by a reboot. Sun recommends doing this in single user mode. I don't normally bother unless the machine is heavily used and/or critically important.

• I updated the kmp player a few days before. It changes some settings on my firefox

I updated the kmp player a few days before. I believe that It changes some settings on my firefox or more.
It changed my home page. Also, every time I reopen firefox, it cannot show my windows and tabs from last time.
Then I removed or stopped using the plug-ins in firefox (one of them is npAPI) that installed that day, changed the setting back to what I want.
I can then get the home page back, but the problem that I cannot get my previous tabs when I open firefox back still exists.
I have updated firefox to 25.0 today.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Just yesterday I downloaded the newest update for iTunes, a few days before doing this I purchased music, but after doing the update my songs will not play. It shows a message that says this file cannot be located, what can I do to find the location?

The path C:\users\owner\appdata\local\apple\apple software update\bonjour64.msi cannot be found. verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package "bonjour64.msi" in a folder from which you can install the product bonjour.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on 25 June 2010. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

one day before,i update my iphone5 system, but i really don't like the operation,i want change back to ios6.1.4,what can i do?

OK, I downloaded the utility, but during the installation process I was advised to shut down Outlook, or restart it after installation. I immediately cancelled the installation. Obviously, this thing is going to muck about with Outlook. I don't want anything to be touching or looking at any of my installed program unless I tell it too AFTER I fully understand what it is doing and how to reverse the whole process in case it gets mucked up.
I looked for a manual or some sort of documentation on the configuration utility, but there does not seem to be any.
Anyone have a link to program documentation for
iPhone Configuration Utility 3.6.2  for Windows?
I find it incredilble that there does not seem to be a stand alone, plug the usb cable in, and make a back up (system image) of an iPhone. After all, the thing seems to be hand held computer. Why not have a simple back up utility? Even the newer phones only have, what, a few GB. Lots of images would fit on an outboard TB disk.
Then if every thing gets FUBAR, simply restore the phone the the last working image.
Does no one keep controled squential backups of iPhones and iPads like you should do with any other computer, workstation or laptop that is a serious business tool?
iTunes for back-up. Does and business seriously do that?
iCloud? I'd be fired if the boss caught me putting client contact information on 'the cloud' or anything outside my secured hard drives. (Unless we have a specific paid contract for services).
My company does not even allow wifi in the office. Security begins with a hard wired connection.
sigh....

• Must update firmware before installing OSX Tiger on OS9

I'm trying to bring an iMac G3 with OS9 to life. It's brand new, never been used before, and doesn't yet have internet. I will get internet (Airport Card) soon, but first have a software update problem.
After starting the iMac, I have inserted the install DVD for Tiger. The computer says it must restart to install, and when it restarts, the computer says it must update firmware before installing. I have to choose a system with which it will start up and my choices are:
OS9: Hard Drive
OSX: Install DVD
My 3rd option searches for a location, and ends up restarting in OS9.
Every option either results in the inevitable error message that the firmware needs updating or using the OS9 environment.
I read Apple support saying that firmware needs to be updated to fix this problem. Support suggests updating firmware from the OSX install DVD, but I haven't found such updates on the DVD, and need to overcome the firmware problem.
Please help, I am anxious to use my computer!
Thank you!
iMac G3   Mac OS 9.0.x   updating to OSX Tiger

Hi, Kristine -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
You can download the firmware update you need from either of these Apple KBase articles -
Article #58174 - iMac: When to Install Available Updaters
Article #86117 - Firmware Updates
In order to install the firmware update, the machine must be booted to OS 9 on its internal hard drive. It's a good idea to have no external devices connected when you do it, other than the keyboard and mouse. If you can, print out the ReadMe that accompanies the update.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

• My mac hung up while installing an update. It took hours and still did not complete the update. I restarted my mac. Upon turning it back on, a wheel has been spinning on a grey screen. I tried to reinstall OS X from utilities, but encounter an error. Why?

My mac hung up while installing an update. It took hours and still did not complete the update. I restarted my mac. Upon turning it back on, a wheel has been spinning on a grey screen. I tried to reinstall OS X from utilities, but encounter an error. What do I do?

Hey Manaskala,
First point of call on all grey screen issues is the following:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Given this issue has appeared after a software update, I'd advise you do the following instead though:
1. Get an external hard drive, with enough space to put the entire hard drive of your Mac onto. Make sure you've safely copied any data you have off of it, as the next step will erase it.
2. In the recovery HD of your machine, use Disk Utility to format you EXTERNAL hard drive with the partition table as GUID, and the format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
3. Get out of Disk Utility, and click Reinstall Mac OS X.
4. When asked where, choose to install onto your external hard drive.
5. When the download and installation is complete, your Mac will reboot into a clean fresh setup screen. Make your user account an administrator, and make up a name and password; I use 'Test' and 'test'.
6. Your machine is now running from the external hard drive, not the internal hard drive, so don't be alarmed when you don't see your files.
7. Open the finder, you should see 'Macintosh HD' in the sidebar. This is the internal hard drive of your computer.
8. Open Macintosh HD, and copy out the following folders into a new folder on your desktop:
-Users.
-Applications.
-Library. (This only needs to be done if you use 3rd party software that saves things in the /Library, do a quick google and see if it does e.g. Photoshop, Protools).
9. When these have copied (it'll take quiet a while), you can now use Disk Utility to erase your hard drive. Don't erase Macintosh HD but the ENTIRE hard drive on the inside of your Mac, and as Thomas A Reed mentioned, there was likely an existing issue on your HDD so please go to Security Options and choose 'Zero Out' before clicking erase. This will rebuild the partition table which was a possible cause of the failed update.
10. Reboot the machine holding 'Option', go to recovery HD.
11. Choose 'Reinstall Mac OS X', this time onto your INTERNAL hard drive.
12. When this is complete, make another admin user called test and password test, like you did last time.
13. Run Software Update from the  menu of your Mac.
14. In the Finder, you should see your external Hard Drive. open it up, inside that you should see your desktop etc, and on the desktop will be your folder containing Library, Applications and Users.
15. Go to Finder up next to the  and choose File -> New Finder Window.
16. In your second finder window, open up Macintosh HD (through the Go -> Computer menu), and go to your Users folder.
17. Open the Users folder in your first finder window, and copy your user folder (has your name on it) into the second user folder (the one inside Macintosh HD).
18. This might take a while.
19. When complete, go to System Preferences -> Users and Groups and unlock the padlock.
20. Click the '+' sign, and make a new administrator user.
21. Now, the fun bit. Note the name of your user folder you copied, e.g. 'Nathan', containing all of your stuff. Note the difference between your user folder (has your name on it) and the Users folder (contains YOUR user folder, guest folder and shared folder).
22. Make the ACCOUNT NAME of your new adminstrator user the EXACT name of your user folder (normally lower case and without spaces), this is case sensitive folks. Your full name can be whatever you want, usually your full name.
23. Then click create. You should be informed that a home folder with that name in it already exists in the Users folder, would you like to make your new account from that folder? say YES!
24. When this is complete, log out of the Test user, log into your new account we've just made, all your stuff should be there.
25. ???????
26. Profit.
There's a few little bits that may need to be cleaned up afterwards, applications folder from your external hard drive should replace the applications folder on your internal hard drive, if the previously mentioned /Library folder contained important goodies then that should replace the /Library folder on your new Mac.
Hopefully that will help you out, straight after that is done make sure your stuff is there, erase your external hard drive and turn on time machine!

• Windows Updates Loops (Please restart your computer to finish installing updates

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the response!  I am a little confused though. Which update do you mean? I am seeing quite a few pending.

Hi All,A ton of our clients have recently been getting caught in a loop of "please restart your computer to finish installing updates", configuring the updates, and then restarting to come back to the exact same thing. The updates never seem to apply. I know this is not a new problem, but the old methods do not seem to be working to fix it. Here is what I've done/ what I know so far.1. We use CentraStage RMM for patching. I've looked into it and it does not appear to be a problem on the CentraStage end.2. So far I am only seeing this on Windows 7 machines.3. I believe this started sometime in the last 3 weeks, and has definitely been going on longer than 2 weeks.4. No updatesare "failing" that I can see (see screenshot 2). The same updates appear to be pending after every reboot though (even though it is definitely configuring...
