Metro apps not freeing memory

I just noticed something strange about metro apps. If I close them they still show up in the task manager as running and using memory. is this a known glitch and is MS planning on fixing it. TIA

This is Store APP memory management mechanism since Windows 8. By this way, Windows store app user could start store app quickly next time when the app closed. If system memory was exhaust, it would release the former app memory space.

Like Jerry said, we can use Windows Store App troubleshooter to check if there is any wrong with Windows Store, it would do some check including system time check, security setting resetting and re-register Windows store, reset Windows Store cache and so
on.
Meanwhile, we can use this command to fix component crash issue:
Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Metro apps not installing

I just reinstalled windows to 8.0 pro. I went to the store and told it to download and install the updates for the apps. in downloads them but says, "this app wasn't installed." I've since re installed windows twice. Even tried the 8.1 update
that worked but put an X in the lower right corner of all of the apps. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

First, please install all available update in Windows update.
Then, to fix this, run the following in a Command Window (CMD) to re-register the Store App in command:
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML
Make sure that you have no proxy settings in Metro app.
To clarify if the issue is related to user profile, please use another user account to see if the same issue persists.
Since to update Store app is related to Windows update components, please try following fixit to reset Windows update components.

GC not freeing memory to OS

Hi,
I know this topic has been discussed many times before, but....
Is there any way to force the GC in 1.5 to release memory back to the operating system.
I have an application that loads many images into a custom page. Lets say that it has allocated 5MB heap (Runtime.totalMemory) before I load the page of images. I then load the page, heap goes up to say 100MB. I then leave the page, heap goes back down to about 5MB - but the operating system memory allocated by the process (via TaskManager or top) still remains at 100MB+.
It seems the JVM is very reluctant to release this memory. This is with the default GC and only -Xmx200m set as JVM params.
I can forceably get it to release the memory, but only after FOUR System.gc()
Arrggghhh.
Does anyone have any advice?

automatically page the memory to disk therefore
freeing the memory anyway?No.
What I am saying is that one of the following will be true...
- The memory is in use
- The memory is not in use and in physical memory
- The memory is not in use and is paged to the hard drive.
In the first case none of this discussion is relevant.
In the second case it doesn't matter because if something needs the physical memory then the OS will page it.
In the third case it takes up hard drive space so why would it matter?

Windows 8.1 Metro UI apps not starting

Hi i just recently updated to windows 8.1 from windows 8 and have had some issues, a blue screen that keeps reappearing after i play some games, seems to be the intel driver causing it, did an update but it still keeps on going to blue screen, i do have
a discrete nvidia gpu on the side, but my main problem is the metro ui which has completely stopped working, every app even the app store and setting for the account, iam only able to access it via desktop mode, some app that say they do work only show the
background color of the metro ui when pressed, but most of the apps have a little cross down in their righ corner and no image, only text.... so does anybody know anything about this? any feedback is appreciated!

Having the same problem. I setup 2 accounts before upgraded to 8.1. They are working ok.
After upgrading to 8.1, any account I setup is showing all apps with the x mark. Even the store.
Spent 3 hours with HP for support, since it's a new computer. They tried everything. Couldn't fix it. Now they want me to reset and go back to 8.0. What a waste of time.
If 8.1 is not ready yet, why did Microsoft release it? Something as basic as a Metro apps not installing is just appalling.
And this is a new HP laptop. When I was younger, I had time to fiddle around with this kind of stuff. Now, I just want stuff to work. This may force me to go buy the MAC.
BTW, already tried all options, like troublshooter, etc..

Freeing Memory

Is it better to use the terminal, sudo purge command or use a Clean Memory app. for freeing memory?
Can the Terminal command cause damage?

Thank you for the feedback. My issue, it seems, was VLC. I say was, because I have since removed it.
I would check my free memory and it would be around 1.02 GB.
I would then watch a couple of movies or TV shows on VLC.
After finishing and shutting down VLC, my memory would be at 16MB and my MBP would be running poorly.
I used sudo purge and memory went back up to 1.75GB.
After reading your post, I removed all traces of VLC and installed MPlayer.
No more free memory problem.

Well if you have 3 gigs of music that is taking up half right there. Pictures and videos also take up a lot of space as well. Another thing is texts are saved on the phone. Try deleting them but texts don't nomally take up a lot of space.

Download the App(s) using iTunes on your Computer then Sync your Device...
OR... Delete Content from your Device to Create more space.

Images not being displayed in metro apps

OS: Windows 8.1 enterprise
Images are not being displayed (a small cross mark shown on the left) when I open metro apps that I download from Store. The store as well doesn't show images. I am able to see images in some built in metro apps like travel and weather.
What's the fix. I guess the company network is blocking it. What is the work around?

NOTE: This is WINDOWS 8.1 METRO UI issue. It doesn't have anything to do with VISIO. The only option that I had to choose when i selected Windows 8.1 is VISIO. This site appears to be broken and not user friendly.

Which metro app did you download and occur the issue? As you post the question in Visio forum, did you use Visio 2013 preview? As far as I know, the version had been off the store after the official version released.
If I misunderstand, please give me more information (Such as App name) or images about your question.

Apparently, something went way wrong SOMEWHERE, SOMEHOW... and now I'm afraid of losing ALL MY MEDIA considering I have NO ITUNES ON MY LAPTOP! 1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

I followed the advice of another user, cleared my payment information and re-entered my credit card info and this took care of it, I was immediately able to download new purchases. Apparently they called and got this info from someone at Apple, there is some sort of "bug". worked for me...hope it helps you out too!!

Top download and install apps you need space available on the iPod equal to about three time the file download size. If you download more than one app at a time you need about three times the total file download size available so it is better if short on storage to purchase one at a time.
