Metro ethernet, Ethernet protection ring.

Hi everybody.
I hope everybody is doing great.    A quick question for you guys.
Let say we have Ethernet switches connected in a ring .We want to use Ethernet protection ring for loop avoidance and faster convergence.
One of the switch will be RPL owner, and of the link in our ring will be chosen as RPL link.
1)My question is what is the criteria for RPL owner selection and RPL link?  (  For e.g  in STP, we use lowest bridge priority for root bridge)
2)  Is Ethernet protection ring provide an alternative to stp when we switches connected in ring toplogy  and fast convergence is required as is the case with metro ethernet commonly ?
Have a great evening.

Dear Friend
If you want to deploy and use L2 VPN service you should
define whst is he type of core
do you want to use L2 VPN service based on IP or MPLS?

  • Connecting ethernet to token ring

I'm having trouble trying to configure cisco 2612 router to connect SNA server to datacenter host. please refer to connectivity below.
    SNA server--eth----router--t/r--control unit--modem-SDLC---modem---FEP
the controller unit has token ring card installed on it and it's connected to router's t/r port..i configured the router with SR/TLB but no success, what we did we temporarily removed the router and add token ring adapter on the same SNA server then connect direct to control unit and it's work but we need to implement the connectivity shown above..thanks

  • DLSw over WAN to Ethernet to Token Ring

Currently, a 3745 in Portland is token ring attached and SNA traffic travels that ring to an IBM 2210 router.
That IBM router connects to a second token ring, which a Cisco 2613 is also connected to. From there
the traffic travels DLSw over the WAN (3 T1s, Multilink PPP bundle) to a 7507 in Cincinnati where a 3745
    is connected via serial.
    3745-TIC<->TR<->2210<->TR<->2613(DLSw)<->WAN<->(DLSw)7507<->LIC-3745
The 7507 serial port is configured as follows:
    interface Serial4/3
description 3745 LIC connection for Fred Meyer DLSW
    mtu 4400
    no ip address
    encapsulation sdlc
    no ip mroute-cache
    no keepalive
    serial restart-delay 0
    clockrate 125000
    sdlc vmac 4000.3745.0000
    sdlc N1 35200
    sdlc address 29 seconly
    sdlc partner 4000.0910.0008 29
    sdlc dlsw 29
The 2613 has an ethernet. The folks in Portland want to move off of the TR and on to Ethernet.
They will replace the IBM router with one that has both TR and ENET.
If we move to the ethernet, the result will be:
    3745-TIC<->TR<->2210<->ENET<->2613(DLSw)<->WAN<->(DLSw)7507<->LIC-3745
Should I change the MTU size on the serial port to 1500 (Ethernet)?
Are there any changes that should occur on the 3745/Mainframe side?
Do you see any other issues?

You cannot increase the MTU for ethernet larger than 1500 bytes because 802.3 (the standard for ethernet) does not allow that.
You may see issues. The problem is that both 3745 does not know the existance of the ethernet. If either 3745 sends a packet larger than 1500 bytes, the 2613 will drop the packet. (I am not an expert on 2210, I do not know if the 2210 is smart enough to segment the SNA packet into 2. I doubt it does, but please confirm it with IBM.) This causes the remote FEP detects a gap in SDLC, LLC2, or TH sequence number. No matter which layer detects the problem. The end result is still the same. The DLSw circuit will be disconnected.
There are several suggestions to your problem:
    1. Make sure the both FEP will not send any PIU larger than 1500 bytes. This can be done either on the NCP gen or modtab. Checking the modtab is tough because your system programmers have to know all application running over the link. Then, they have to check the corresponding modtab entry for the applications.
    2. run DLSw between 7507 to IBM 2210
    3. directly connect the 2613 to the TIC (3745)

  • Ethernet WAN - Metro E, Ethernet to MPLS, Ethernet Private Line

is there a preferred router for Ethernet WAN applications 10MBS, 100 MBS? Running BGP going to MPLS network? Can a 1841 work? Or is there reason to move up to 28xx or 38xx? Is it possible to avoid the Router and just plug in to a Core Switch like 6513?

    Hi Scott
Its all about the total bandwidth and number of routers you will recieve from your SP through your BGP session.
I think 1841 wont be a best fit with the requirement you have. Better to check out for 28xx or 38xx based on the above 2 points i have mentioned.

  • 15454 Ethernet Protection & Provisioning

Is anyone using E100T-G Ethernet cards in Cisco ONS transports forconnectivity? We are just starting and cannot seem to find an answer to a nagging question (after much RTFM and TAC runarounds). Our topology is a 15 node UPSR SONET. We currently have 3 nodes each with a 12-port E100 card. Node1 Port2 connects to Node2 Port2. Node1 Port3 connects to Node3 Port3. Everything is on the same VLAN (default). Now my question is of protection. When we setup any other type of circuit (DS1 or DS3) the circuit is created to be protected by default, the software provides a working and protected path. But when creating ethernet circuits there is no such option. So when looking at the circuit list under the Protection column instead of the "UPSR" listing like all the rest of the circuits, for the Ethernet we see "Unprot". Try as we might we cannot find a way to make these circuits protected. At this point we assume that if there is a fiber cut or loss, the whole ring will switch from the working ring to the protected ring and the Ethernet will go right along this path as well. We are going to be installing a couple more nodes next spring and we plan to test this by actually pulling the OC48 connections out while it is running (without live traffic of course), but in the mean time we are perplexed by this problem. If anyone has any thoughts, ideas, or suggestion on provisioning Ethernet and how to effectively and efficiently use Ethernet in a network, we'd love to hear from you.

You have several options then. If you leave your cards as a multi-card or single-ether card then they will operate as a Layer 2 switch. The E-series cards operate well as a switch but do not have all the features that can be found in the ML series of cards. One of the options is to utilize these cards at L2 with this method you can segment all your remote sites back on individual VLANs to your aggregation site. The protection mechanism in this case can either be individually protected circuits, however this can consume quite a bit of bandwidth with only STS granularity for provisioning these circuits. You can also map your circuits from card to card all the way around your ring. This allows you to create unprotected circuits and rely on Spanning Tree to protect your traffic and re-route in the event of a fiber cut. Bear in mind that Spanning tree can take up to 50 seconds per switch port to complete a topology change. In my experience on a 16 node ring with E-series cards, spanning tree can take as long as 3 or 4 minutes to complete and put all the ports back into forwarding. This time period may be unacceptable depending on your situation.
Alternately, you can provision your E-series card as port-mapped which changes them to a layer 1 card. You can then connect a switch to the ports in your remote sites. With a switch such as a 3550 you can implement RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree) which can reduce your convergence time using rapid spanning tree to sub 1 second.
The ML card provides another option to implement a great Ethernet topology that includes RPR (Resilient Packet Rings) which provide for sub 50ms failover and spatial re-use. This is a greatly improved method of delivering metro Ethernet services and in addition support eoMPLS (Ethernet over MPLS) which can provide you some features that you can use in your own network as well as offer as a premium service to commercial customers.
Let me know if you would like to expand on any of these topics.
    Best Regards,
    Brad

  • Access Connections fails to recognize DNS server for wired Ethernet connections

I'm running Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T410i.  I ran the Lenovo update yesterday which updated Access Connections from 6.01 to 6.21.  I then could not make any network connections to the Internet.  I used Windows System Restore to back out the changes made by the Lenovo updater.
Since then, I am able to connect to the Internet using the wireless adapter, but the wired LAN connection fails to connect to the Internet because it doesn't recognize the DNS servers  The wired LAN adapter is the Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection.  The IP v4 configuration settings haven't changed (use DHCP, obtain IP and DNS addresses automatically), but it can't seem to connect to the DNS servers.
The message from Windows Network Diagnostics is:
Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.
The symptoms appear the same as in this problem in the Lenovo support library, but that was occuring with Access Connections 2.60, a much earlier version of the software:
Network connection is not working if Access Connection is used to set DNS information - ThinkPad General
    Symptom
When a wired (Ethernet or Token Ring), network profile is created with Access Connections v2.60, the user may be unable to connect to a LAN or the Internet.
    Affected configurations
Any model ThinkPad system using Access Connections v2.60
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks!
    Michael

Yes, some Lenovo employees do read and post to this forum.  Mark is quite active, and several others post as well.  In addition, there are lurkers who just read without making public comments although sometimes they ask the mod team to either gather more information or pass along advice.

Get yourself a Surge supressor that has Ethernet dataline protection. I use an APC Back-Ups 750. Ever since I installed that between my cable modem and my broadband router, I haven't had a single piece of hardware die on me (Knock-on-wood...)
Of course all my PC's and my Cable Modem, Router, and Switch all are connected to APC battery back-ups for power as well.

Red light Built-in Ethernet. The cable for Built-in Ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet.
It will need an IP Address, and if you are not using Ethernet to connect to the Internet via a Router, you will need to provide one Manually or change your wiring scheme (see below). Choose an address similar to the Airport IP address assigned to your computer by your Airport Base Station/Router, but a bit higher, e.g, Airport is assigned 10.10.10.3 via DHCP. Use a similar number but somewhat higher, but less than 254 such as 10.10.10.101. Use a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 (which says anything the same in the first three octets is on my Subnet and can be reached directly). The rest can be blank, or you can fill in the DNS info provided by your ISP.
Also, important -- you must turn on AppleTalk on your Ethernet port (using the AppleTalk pane), which will turn it off over Airport.
Last step is to cycle the power on your AsanteTalk, since it is horrible at re-acquiring printer/Macs that drop out for any reason.
Now try to set up your printer again. Remember the LaserWriter Select 360 is an AppleTalk Printer, do not allow it to configure as an LPR Printer.
    Alternate wiring:
Another alternative is to connect the AsanteTalk to a wired Ethernet port on your Base Station, if one is available. Then it can get an IP Address from the Base Station directly. Some third-party base station of lesser-known brands do not pass AppleTalk packets over wireless, so this is occasionally a problem.

  • Ethernet intranet transfer speed issue

I followed these directions after suspecting my transfer speed was not what it used to be. I remember when transferring files via ethernet that the speed was quite astounding.
    directions:
Network>Built-in Ethernet>Ethernet Tab>Configure drop down>Manually (Advanced), then manually set the Speed to 1000baseT on both, and the Duplex to full, then Apply... sometimes a reboot is needed.
After this resulted in no speed difference, I noticed my cables were regular cat 5, not cat 5e or 6.
So I bought some name brand cat 6 cables.
I am using a gigabit router Dlink dir 655 i believe, with cat 6 cables, but it takes about 1 minute to transfer 1 gig of data between my macbook and my G5 dual 2.3.
I believe this is not optimal speed, it seems i am still stuck on 100mbps.

    Mac book pro,
Turns off and goes under protection, sometimes without any specific motivation, but most of the time when an External monitor is pluged-in.
I use it when I work with final cut pro, and this problem it's becoming huge and changing my workplans....
It can turns off also 10 times in two hours.
In many forums I read that the CPU temp could be the problem, but I've checked it and It's always around 62°-68°....
In some others they say that the new RAM could be the problem too.

  • Kern protection error from Call of Duty 2 game

Hey everyone,  I was told if anyone could help me it would be on here.
Over the last few weeks I started getting the odd kern protection error while playing my Call of Duty 2 game.  I have had this game for years and this had never happened before. Over the last week, it now occurs EVERY time I play the game. I sometimes can get 5 minutes in the game before it crashes and sometimes it is only seconds.
I have OS X version 10.4.11 on 24 inch iMac
2.16 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
    1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I have run the Hardware Test disk and it found no issues.
I thought it may be my gpu overheating but was told the temps are in normal ranges.  Here is a sample of the temps immediately after the error:
    Temp (all in Celsius)
    HD - 46
    CPU - 41
    Ambient - 23
    GPU - 53
    GPU Diode - 63
    GPU Heatsink - 53
    HD Bay - 46
    Optical Drive - 37
    Fan speed
    Optical Drive - 599 rpm
    CPU Fan - 998 rpm
    HD Fan - 1299 rpm
I also ran MemTest on the machine and everything came back OK.
I had installed MacScan a few weeks ago so removed it, still no improvement.
I also installed StartupSoundPref a few weeks ago and still have that installed.
I am out of ideas and the wife is concerned because I wander around the house aimlessly.  Any input appreciated.
Here is the output from a recent log file.

Now to test the system with the latest high demand games! We tested the system with crysis 3, metro last light, assassin's creed IV and battlefield 4. All these games require very high spec systems and are great for testing; we tested them on max settings and also on Nvidia’s optimized settings for each game. Nvidia has made it easy to optimize the settings to get the best performance possible out of the notebook with the GeForce experience! You can auto-optimize game settings for best performance and tweak them if you want better graphics or better frame rate.
    The result are as follows:
Crysis 3 maxed out ran at an average of 20-30 FPS and with Nvidia’s optimized settings it ran at an average of 55-65 FPS.
Metro last light maxed out ran at an average of 30-40 FPS and with Nvidia’s optimized settings it ran at an average of 50-60 FPS.
Assassin’s creed IV maxed out ran at an average of 30-40 FPS and with Nvidias optimized settings it ran at an average of 35-45 FPS.
Battlefield 4 maxed out ran at an average of 35-45 FPS and with Nvidia’s optimized settings it ran at an average of 50-60 FPS.
All round great results from some of the highest demanding games on the market, it shows that the GE70 is capable of keeping up with your gaming needs while still being a portable, slim and light notebook.

It is extra ventilation for cooling! Quote from: RepoSnow;104046

  • ONS upgrade options

We have a OC192/SONET network with ONS 15454 platforms (about 6 years old now). Our circuits do not involve a protection ring.
We use the ML1000 cards, and the biggest uplinks are 2Gbs.
I would like to build larger circuits out of the OC192, but the ML cards are holding me back (they are limited to 2 1Gbs interfaces).
I am also exploring DWDM options (it is not enabled now).
    Some some general questions
    1. Does the ONS 15454 support a larger router card than the ML1000?
    2. What platform would allow me to use greater bandwidth?
    3. What is (generally) involved with enabling DWDM on existing STS circuits?

Typically, the ONS15454 will have 2 OC-192 cards and 2 ML1000 cards (and supporting cards--X2, TCC, etc.)
It will have an upstream and downstream connection on the OC-192, but with a maximum circuit size of STS-24
Each POS interface (2) on the ML1000s is used, and the mapped Ethernet interfaces uplink to access layer equipment.
The STS circuits are unprotected, as we have limited fiber.
    DWDM is not enabled.
