Metro Ethernet vs Leased line

Guys,
I'm setting a proposal for WAN link. there will 2 option, 45 MB leased line and 100 Metro ethernet. I need to know what is the pro/cons for this 2 technology as i need to explain to the customer.
Do anybody have a link or explaination on this?
Thanks
Rezzo

WAN vs Metro
1) Future BW Expansion : Metro-E BW expansion is as very easy compared to adding leased circuits to the WAN.
2) Service levels : Since Metro-E is a service it has better service levels than a traditional WAN link.
3) Finally Cost: In most cases the BW cost derived per Leased Circuit to that of Metro-E Link is higher in most places.
What may make the choice of WAN more practical is the availability of WAN only and no Metro service in a area.
Plus if the customer is not at all comfortable with a shared infrastructure link like Metro-E.

  • Metro E'net vs Lease Line

Hi, I want to use Metro E'net and
Leased Line effectively within 4 campus
All the centers are having L2/L3 Switches and routers & WAN Links are running on OSPF as on date.
    Existing Setup (2500 Desktops + 250 Servers)
    1. Seperate Network ID / Internet connections / Servers for all places
    2. Seperate VoIP PBX for all the places (This will work for IP / Trunks over WAN)
    3. Seperate WAN Links for Connecting Different offices
    4. Seperate Adminstrators for all the places
    5. Seperate VLAN/VTP Server/Clients
    6. Seperate Firewall for all the places
    After Commisioned the Metro E'net,
    Option: 1
    1. Will Metro E'net be reliable having a single vendor ? If not, do we need to get from second vendor also ?
    2. Can i merge all in to single network ?? Will this is reliable ???
    3. Can we use VLAN/VTP information over Metro E'net ?? If so, is that secured ?? If not, to secure what needs to be done?
    4. All the L2/L3 become VTP Server and rest all switches become Client mode
    5. Can we forward VoIP Traffic over Metro E'net ?? (For IP we can propogate for Trunks required only WAN.. How do we do that?
    6. Will Metro E'net can be used for L2 and L3 Functionality ? (If not, is it possible for split 8 MB to 4MB for 6 MBPS for L2 and 2 MBPS for Routing ?
    7. Will QoS can be enabled on Metro E'net ?
    8. Can we forward all the centers Internet traffic to single center?
If the above case is worked out, we will not use Leased circuit at all.
    Option:2
    1. Metro E'net will be used for VLAN/VTP's only
    2. All the L2/L3 Becomes VTP Server and others will have Client Mode
    3. routing will be used for Routers
Please advise which is good for a Corporate network and how can we impliment

  • Cable vs Leased Line which is better

Looking for info on what service would be better to use. I'm controlling 18 sewer pump station with radios now but want to make it faster and do some real times. At this point i'm polling each location once a minute and i want to see it in realtime.

We have worked for two seperate customers where we installed ethernet modems on lease lines and connect to the remote PLC's using a Modbus driver and selecting Modbus ethernet mode and  have had good luck with that.  The poll rates we have set are between 1 to 3 secs.  The server on one site currently is looking at 9 sites.
We had some situations where the lease lines were being abandoned so we have now switch most of the sites to wireless ethernet radios and are having excellent results.
We have not tried cable but using the radios and ethernet have worked well.  Previous to the conversion to ethernet modems we were using serial modems.  With the serial modems we needed to transfer all the data to a master PLC and then have Lookout Poll the master PLC.  The poll times there were longer due to the nature of the polling updates.

  • Load balancing with Serial Leased Lines & Etherdrops

This problem is a unique one.
I have 6 Internet Leased Lines of 2 Mbps each. Keeping in view of the increasing thirst for Bandwidth, I ordered Etherdrops for the ease of on the fly upgrade, as & when needed.
To my surprise, when these Etherdrops were terminated on router, there was no trafic flowing over these etherlinks. I had to forcefully put traffic on these links using PBR.
I want to use all my links i.e. 6 serial + 2 etherlinks for per packet load-balancing.
    can some1 help.
    Regards,

    Hi
are you running any routing protocols with your ISP ?
also you can have a max of 6 equal cost route in routers.
Thats the reason i feel you are unable to use the etherdrops.
Y dont u think off going on upgrading the E1s into Fiber and take them as single ethernet output or a E3 output ?

  • Metro Ethernet implementation questions

I am planning a Metro Ethernet upgrade for a network I manage. This is the first time I’ve implemented Metro on any network. I’m looking for some suggestions and answers to a couple questions regarding this upgrade.
The current network is Hub and spoke connected by copper lines to 17 different locations from a DS3 @ our HQ. HQ also has a DS3 to the internet which the branch locations go out for internet. At our branches we have a private and public network on different subnets. Each branch location has either a T1 or bonded T1 connected to a Cisco 2801 router then to Netgear PoE managed switch(s).
The upgrade of the DS3 for internet is going to 100 meg. The data side will also be 100meg at HQ, 10meg to our small locations and 100meg to the large.
My question is what do I need to be aware of on our existing network that must change to get this working?
    1)      Will I simply go from the layer2 Metro Switch to our router?
    2)      Should I remove the router and go directly to the Netgear switch?
    3)      Do I need to VLAN the private and public networks?
    4)      Do I need to change routing tables?
    Thoughts and/or suggestions welcome.
Let me know if more information is required to assist in answers.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I think it would be better to include Cisco Account Manager/SE for this upgrade, they can guide you better and can come up with LLD for this upgrade, otherwise upgrading your 17 sites without proper planning can cause you serious issues.

  • Metro ethernet configuration

Months agao I had a 10MB metro ethernet link installed between two of my locations within 3 miles of each other. The link is fiber with a conversion module to copper, 10MB ethernet.
I have the link on one end coming into a fastether port on a cisco 2620 router and the other end on a fastether cisco 3745.
My routing the man like a frame link, each location is on a seperate subnet.
I have not configured either end for IPsec, tunnel, etc.
I have had the line checked by the ISP, but constantly received interface resets, output errors and excessive collisons.
I feel I'm missing something from the configuration.
I have verified my equipment is fine, both fastethers have been changed so my equipment is good.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is related to send a busty traffic to you Ethernet interface and check the duplex and speed for both ends (It should be match).Check any viruses updated from the local Computers. Normally collision will happen when an Ethernet or transceiver cable is too long or when there are more than two repeaters between stations. So if the error is more then automatically the interface is resets. I hope the below link provide you more information.

  • 3750 Metro ethernet switch

    Folks,
I have 6500's at the core and want to use the 3750 at the PE. My question is the following:
    1) 3750 would do Q-IN-Q.
    2) Once the packet reaches the 6500(sup 720) running MPLS. What happens to the frame. Do i use xconnect to transfer the frame to the appropriate PE?
Just confussed about how does the PE use the Q-IN-Q information to direct it to the appropriate PE?
Sample config would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Leased line setup

    I have a Cisco 2500 router with IOS version (C2500-I-L), Version 11.2(9.
cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision L) with 14336K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 07094315, with hardware revision 00000000
    Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 2.0, NET2, BFE and GOSIP compliant.
    2 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)
    2 Serial network interface(s)
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
8192K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)
I have request to configure the router for leased line with speed of 128 kbps.
The serial cable v.35 is connected to its serial interface.
The provider has put the line and TA, DSU is there in the site and bot are connected.
But the router serial interface is not connected to any device is the info I got.
With this information, what is the configuration need to setup in router?
    How to configure it?
    Thank you.

    Hi
Just logon to the router and enable the port on which the leased line is connected.
Once you are connected to the router either through console or telent give no shut on the interface to enable the same.
You need to have the IP Space information from your SP side so that you can configure them on your router.
Or you need to check out the ip space which you can configure between your locations if its a point to point between your locations.
once you are done with the ip config you can verify the connectivity using normal ping command.
if you have the reqd info on your local lan address space you can configure accordingly on your ethernet interface and define the routes accordingly on your router or else a default route via the leased line will do..

  • Suggest No. of routers in a single metro-ethernet Vlan

    Hi,
Just would like to know if there is a recommended no. of routers to put into a single metro-ethernet vlan. The local Metro-ethernet provider suggest 10 routers per vlan but I think 30-50 would be OK ?

This question is like how many nodes can you put into a VLAN. For an answer to be given your traffic types would need to be known. How chatty are your routers? Are you bridging? What type routing / bridging traffic (non-unicase) might you have on the wire? Baseline data from your environment is important to answer this question. There is no hard fast recommendation for this just as there is none for numbers of nodes in a VLAN or router is an OSPF area. This is completely dependant on your environment.
    Hope this helps,
    Don

  • Which is better lease line or VPN??

Hi..I need to connect 10 sites with no web portal, public users...which is better between lease line or VPN ..is there a need of firewall?...Does VPN also covers the L4-L7 securities ??..should I go for lease line or VPN ??
When I go for VPN, still there is a need of Firewalls to provide the L4-L7 securities if Web servers are there ...??
    Please suggest me ..
    Regards,
    -Sanjeev

Yes for sure VPNs and firewalls are complementary technologies and both are required on most networks. To simplify you could acquire a UTM box that could offer you all this on the same hardware unit, resulting in reducted TCO.
Leased lines vs. other medium discussion is not about the 'better' or worse. You have to balance between reliability/availability and COST. A properly desgined MPLS VPN (ISP) could offer a pretty decent uptime (just make sure you have an appropriate SLA with the ISP).
    Please rate if helpful.

  • Options for QoS on 2 meg PPP lease line.

    Hi,
I have a 2 meg PPP data lease line bet my HO and BO. I need to know the Qos options, I can configure to run voice over the same link. I want to reserve 384K to voice traffic.
Will auto qos be of any help ?

Can someone please explain me VPLS and H-VPLS as to how it can be used in a Metro Ethernet Environment????Any diagramatic explanation will be highly appreciable...

Thanks a lot for the presentations Harot...
As I'm a bit new to MPLS technology, I have some doubts in my mind so far Layer 3 VPNs are concerned. Let's consider a typical Scenario :
    CE-->PE-->P-->P-->PE-->CE....
Could u pls tell me where MP-BGP runs (whether in PE to P or PE to CE b'coz somewhere i read the protocol used between PE-CE is MP-BGP and that's why I'm confused) and what is it's purpose. So far I know MP-BGP is run in order to make the VPNv4 routes unique i.e IPV4+VPNv4. I would highly appreciate ur feedback if u explain the layer 3 concept entirely protocol wise...i.e IGP, MP-BGP in a MPLS domain. What I know so far is CE-PE protocol can be anything right from static to BGP. P-PE is MP-BGP.
Kindly pl. correct me wherever I'm wrong...
    Thanks in advance...

  • Customer Equipment for Metro Ethernet Link

    Hi All
It has been some time since I utilised Cisco network kit to provide private circuit point to point connectivity and I wonder if someone could give me a little guidence.
The customer is shortly to implement a new 100Mb Metro Ethernet link to connect two of their branches. They initially intend to use the link for data only traffic but eventually will want to route VOIP traffic across the link so bandwidth management and QoS will be essential components. It is unlikely that further links will be added to this link so built in expansion of the chosen routers may not be required.
Budget will be an issue on this so I would appreciate any advice or recomendations.
    Thanks
    J.

    Hello James,
I think it would be better to get in touch with your Cisco Account Team as this question cannot be answered on a forum post.
    Thanks,

  • Best way to detect failure in Metro ethernet networks

    Hello ,
I am working for a well known provider and I am currently migrating one of my client from Frame-relay to Metro-ethernet link .
I am actually looking for advices on what sort of mechanism to implement to detect a failure in the ME parth .
As you probably know , failure on one of the links might cause the CE-SWITCH-PE interfaces to stay up/up and the network will not neceseraliy start converging .
So far I have implemented BFD along with IP SLA route tracking , I am happy with BFD but the IP SLA is acting "weird" .
    - IP SLA ICMP tracking rely on ICMP packets and was too sensitive to packets lost
    - We switched to ip route sla tracking but I am still unsure about the best way to use or implement this .
Is there some sort of best practices available somewhere for this ?
    thanks ¨
    T

    Hello Thomas,
From what i have seen BFD is best bet as it allows to relax the L3 protocols timers ( BGP / any other protocol used between CE- PE ). Another option is to have gre tunnel between the PE - CE link and track this tunnel interface.
