Metro Interface

Hello!
I've installed Microsoft Techical Preview (Windows 10) on my notebook today, and I'm liking it.
By I can't find where I can enable the Metro Interface on this release.
It was released? The Metro UI is enabled on this release?
Thank you!
My regards.

Tablets aren't the focus of this release.
It's supposed to represent a return to serious computing.
Clearly Microsoft needs to create two different systems.

For those of you that, as myself, tryed to install windows 8 in a Toshiba Portege M750 and had problems in portrait tablet mode I recommend the following driver it works perfectly:
    http://cdn.wacom.com/U/drivers/TabletPC/ISD_DualTouch_710-8.zip
The problem I had was that swipe didn't work with metro interface, and touch didn't work also and in portrait, strangely, when you touch the secren two arrows with different directions woul appear.
    This driver solved my problem.
    Hope that this can help...

  • Appv 4.6 SP3 and the Metro Interface.

    Hello forum,
I am about to deploy App-V 4.6 SP3 clients to Windows 8.1 workstations.  I am unable for commercial and logistical reasons to trade up to App-V 5.
Does anyone have any resources or guidance documentation on how to delivery application to Windows 8.1 workstations and manipulate the Metro interface?  As in creating tiles when the application is delivered and removing them if revoked.
Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.
    regards
    Graham Clarke

There shouldn't be any problem at all. As Windows uses the user's start menu as a source for icons, it should work.
Remember that win 8.1 does not show new tiles automatically, but they have to be added from the lsit of availabe applications. http://stealthpuppy.com/customize-the-windows-default-profile/ talks
    about that

  • Metro interface generation and new users / long logintimes

One of the biggest problems with windows 8 and 8.1 on a domain, is the time it takes to create the metro interface for each new user that logs on the machine. In a public school, this makes the login time first time verry long, and since students never use
the same machine twise it has to generate the metro interface everytime. Will windows 10 have better control over this? why not let metro app redirect just like the startmenu ?
I have never managed to find a solution to the above problem on windows 8.1, so i were hoping microsoft would do something here, to make windows 10 more usable in schools and other places where users change computers offen.

    Hi,
I believe BOTH microsoft and Lenovo have a responsibility to make their computers useful and accessable to AVERAGE USERS.  You should not have to reseach how to use Windows 8 on the internet to figure how to use the it.
When there is a problem with either the hardware or understanding the Operating System, Lenovo has a reponsibility to help the user.  A lost customer is a lost customer period and blaming it on Microsoft will not help Lenovo.
My specific problems with Lenovo were.
Their description of how to use the operating system was buried as an  option under "Lenovo /Companion".  They should have come up automatically as part of the initial boot up proceedure.
When I found the "How to DO windows 8"  screen, it said click the "Learn More"  button.  There was no "LEARN MORE BUTTON".  Instead I happend to notice a small grey line was a hot spot.  The button did not display for some reason. Don't they test these things.
The tutorials were to small and to fast to actually see what was being done.
The tutorials were made for touch screen or mouse interface.  They were not set up for the touch pad that most people would be using.   They touch pad gestures are helpful once you know them but maddenting when strange things happen and you don't know why.
When I called Lenovo support, the first level support person did not know much about the operating system, he had to look up the answer to every question.   The supervisor was downright rude.
Lenovo and Microsoft must do better if they want to stay competative.

  • Are test builds of Firefox with the metro interface avaiiiable anywhere?

Mercurial and the wiki both show development has continued on the 'win8 app' style interface for Firefox, but I can't seem to access it through either the current aurora or beta releases.
Is there a way to get a build with 'the interface formerly known as Metro' without having to build from source myself? Or are the features there, and I'm simply derping hardcore?
    Any help would be appreciated.

hello Axiomatic, development on the ui formerly known as metro has been ceased by mozilla due to low user interest unfortunately:

the code may live on in certain code repositories but there are no current test builds making use of it...

    Hello,
I'm trying to set some properties (CODECAPI_AVEncCommonRateControlMode and CODECAPI_AVEncCommonQuality), but I'm not sure how to do it. I tried to set them through the media type, but they seem to get ignored by the system (I tried with 1 and 100 of

This is the output captured by mftrace. What am I doing wrong? What is the correct way to set these properties (that are marked as compatible with the Metro interface)
    Thank you!

    Hello James,
    Let's go with an example.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd317841(v=vs.85).aspx
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd317842(v=vs.85).aspx
I want to be able to set these two properties in my MediaEncodingProfile in order to switch from a bitrate based encoding to a quality based encoding. Both properties are marked in the documentation as compatible with Windows Store Apps so they should work
    right?
Following your example I set them in the video MediaPropertySet as
    MediaPropertySet^ set = mediaEncodingProperties->Properties;
    set->Insert(CODECAPI_AVEncCommonRateControlMode, (int)eAVEncCommonRateControlMode_Quality);
    set->Insert(CODECAPI_AVEncCommonQuality, 1);
Quality 1 because I want to be sure that they're working. The default is 70 so the quality should be really low and visible.
    Then I call (as usual)
    mediaCapture.StartRecordToCustomSinkAsync(encodingProfile, mfExtension);
But I still get a bitrate based encoding. What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you,
    C13

  • Metro-only user interface

    Hello
I'm an embedded developer (well the target devices are embedded, not me ;o) and discovered that Windows 8.1 and later versions might be interesting as an OS for developing home automation touchscreen devices.
Will there be a Windows version with only the Metro interface (without the regular desktop) like used on tablets and phones?
Or can it be stripped down to a Metro-only version after installation?
    thanks in advance
    richard

    Hi,
I'm afraid that it's impossible to completely disable the classic desktop, what we can do is booting directly to Start Screen and removing the "Desktop" tile, but user can still easily restore it back or just click "Windows" logo to switch
to desktop, it's the design for Windows 8.1.
For more issue about development, I think the MSDN forum can provide more help.

  • Windows 8 Metro view is no longer an option?

I recently updated to the Firefox beta option so I could use the Metro interface, but it seems as though Firefox automatically updated and removed this option. Is there a way to still use this option? or revert back to an old version? It it very difficult to use a desktop environment on a tablet, and since using that Metro interface that's all I used.

Yes, the Metro version has been removed.

  • Adobe Air for win8 metro apps

    Hi guys,
I might be a little early with the question, but actually its something which will bug us all at some point.
    Windows 8 METRO apps.
On tablets the metro interface will not support the flash plugin on websites, so we cannot have flash apps on it unless we can really make metro apps (which I heard will only be available through the MS webstore? )
Is this then the same like when we now create an APK for android or a IPA for Iphone using flash cs5.5 ?
Is there any more information available on this apart from the message from Adobe that the THINK it will run ?
    Kind regards,
    Bart

I haven't heard any more than you Bart, but I'll +1 this for some answers!

  • If you traded in your mac mini for a windows pc, what would you get?

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and am just chafing to upgrade. It's slow as molasses.  But at the same time, I'm not willing to pay full price for 2012 model, and Apple is way behind in releasing an update. In fact I'm hearing speculation that Apple may be just discontinuing the Mac Mini.
I don't know... But I'm getting tired of waiting. And getting a different model of Mac doens't work for me, because I want to use my own screens. (I'm running two large screens in "portrait" mode.)
Also, I have a Windows 7 PC at work, and I've come to realize that I don't mind Windows 7 and don't see it as intrinsically better than the Apple OS. In fact Windows & has generally been mariginally more stable, and a lot faster then the OS on my Mac. In fact I got both systems around the same time and the Windows 7 system did better with less RAM and is "aging" better.
HOWEVER, what I really love about the Mac Mini is how QUIET it is. I have it in my bedroom, next to my bed, and it's noise is barely noticeable. So I guess I should look into seeing if there area any desktop PC's that are as quiet.
Have you considered switching back to a PC, and if you did what would you get?

I moved away from Apple in 2007 and have never looked back !
    I use the ASRock Vision X 420D  http://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/VisionX%20Series%20(Haswell)/
Its the same size as the current Mini but a bit taller - BUT it is FULLY user upgradeable and about the same price once you make a mini upto the same spec.
I run Windows 8.1 on it and love it - yes there are lots of people bleating on about the 'metro' style of Win 8 but if you configure it (which has been a feature from launch, not a 3rd party hack) you never have to see the metro interface and you have a standard desktop.
As to woodmeister50 comment of : Also, with Win8, many third party add on companies have dropped support etc. is that not the same for Mavericks ?!

  • Windows 8 and dv6000

I haven’t seen anything posted yet so I thought I’d let anyone who is curious know: Yes, you can upgrade your DV6000 to Windows 8.  I did mine a couple of days ago and it seems to be running fine so far.  The procedure described in the thread General Windows 7 Upgrade Guide for HP Laptops for Level 3 notebooks pretty much works for Windows 8, but with even less work.
My hardware configuration since the DV6000 class of laptops had so many hardware configurations.  Not sure if I have a DV6000 or DV6100 since my case has one product number and my BIOS has a different product number.
    Intel Centrino Duo T5600 @ 1.83 GHz
    Intel ICH7 chipset
nVidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics processor
    Built in webcam
    SD Card slot
I did an image backup of my hard disk by moving the drive from my laptop to another computer and using Acronis True Image Backup (free versions available from Seagate and Western Digital).  Replaced the hard disk and ran the Win8 Setup program from a DVD burned from the ISO image created by the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.
I selected “Custom” for the type of installation so I could change the partitioning of my hard disk.  Like most HP Laptops, I had a Recovery Partition and an unnamed (diagnostic?) partition.  I used the install program to delete all of the partitions so that Win8 would have use of the entire disk.
The Windows 8 installer identified and installed drivers for most of the hardware on my laptop.  The drivers not installed by the installer were for the Conexant audio, the Conexant soft modem, the Quick Launch buttons, the Ricoh 5in1 Card reader, and the nVidia GPU.  All but the Ricoh card reader and nVidia GPU driver were downloaded by Windows Update during the first update pass.  If you are connected to the internet during the install, the installer can download the drivers during installation.
The installer correctly identified the Ricoh memory card reader and buried a message in the Action Center.  The message automatically points you to an HP FTP server to download the driver for the memory card reader.
The only driver that had to be downloaded and installed manually was for the nVidia GPU.  The latest Win7 ver 179.48 driver from the nVidia website worked well.  Don’t use the Vista driver from the HP website.  The tiles disappear with it.
And that’s it.  I was able to find newer drivers for the Intel PRO/Wireless and I’m still checking the other hardware.  But the Windows 8 installer did most of the work and did it correctly.
Windows 8 feels a lot quicker than WinXP.  It definitely starts up faster and other Window operations feel quicker overall.  The Metro interface is a little quirky but I can live with it.
So if you have a DV6000 similar to mine, yes, you can put Win8 on it.
    This question was solved.

    Great post CliffPre,
Thank you for taking the time to share this information.
Before an upgrade, one can also run the Upgrade Assistant software, which will scan your PC and generate a report on what is currently installed on your PC is compatible with W8.

More than likely HP is not going to support hardware for W8 on any system purchased before Oct 1st 2011.

  • Browse and preview audio

Seems to me at one time I could browse a preview audio without jumping to itunes or xbox audio  in the metro interface . like video or pictures i could move quickly from file to file. am I wrong? why do I haved to be dragged out of bridge for each file i wish to preview? why doesnt the adobe empire have an internal player? or am i doing something wrong.

or am i doing something wrong.
Not sure, I can play mpeg 4  both music and video as well as MP3 without problems in Bridge. However the ability to play .m4a files in my music library (Mac- iTunes) is depending on what files I use.
Those I imported from my own CD's show no problem, those bought form the iTunes store don't play in Bridge, the also show a lock icon so for reason of coding / security Apple only lets them play in iTunes I presume.

  • Jabber for windows 9.7 photo issue

    Hello,
I'm facing an issue with corporate photos on Jabber version 9.7. Before, with version 9.2 i had the same problem but after add an entry on the file jabber-config.xml the corporate photos were already shown.
What can be the cause for this behaviour with version 9.7?

    Hi Amit,
Hope you're doing well. Guess the problem is solved. We installed this new version 9.7 of jabber on a machine with Windows XP OS. After reviewing the Cisco Jabber for Windows 9.7 Release Notes I noticed that the only available Operating Systems for jabber 9.7 are:
Operating System Support Cisco Jabber for Windows 9.7 supports the following operating systems:
    •Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit)
•Windows 8 (32 bit and 64 bit). Note: Metro Interface and Windows 8 RT are not supported.
•Windows 8.1 (32 bit and 64 bit). Note: MediaNet (including deskphone video feature) does not currently support Windows 8.1

  • Is there a way to create a "common desktop" for all RD/TS 2012 users? (Office 2010 icons on the dekstop, for example.)

Hello!  Just like the title, is there a way to create a "common desktop" for all RD/TS 2012 users?
I know how to do this using regular W7 workstations and 2008 Servers, but the "Default" folder under the USERS directory is gone and I'm not sure how to get the icons there in Windows 8, let alone Server 2012 Remote Desktop.
I've installed Office 2010 on the 2012 server, but every end user that logs in has to manually type in "Word," "Excel." "PowerPoint." etc from the metro interface, then right-click each icon to add the shortcut to the desktop.
Given the... uh.. unfamiliarity of our endusers around the computer, this really isn't the best option.  What I'd like is them to log on and have all the Office icons ready and availible for them.
    Any ideas?
