Metronome (Klopfgeist) audible on channels it shouldn't be!

Hi there,
I'm using Logic Studio with my Macbook and a Roland Edirol FA-66 firewire audio interface.
I have one channel of audio per project, with a backing track on it essentially. And I've selected this to come out of Outputs 1 & 2 on my FA-66.
I want to send the metronome click to a drummer, so I've selected that (on the metronome settings) to come out of Outputs 3 & 4.
The click is coming out of outputs 3 & 4 as it should, but for some reason I can ALSO hear it in the channel I selected to come out of 1 & 2. Which is obviously unusable in a live situation
No matter what I change on the fa-66 the click is still audibly from outputs 1 & 2.
I'm sure this is something ridiculously simple!
What am I doing wrong!

OK this is gonna sound weird, but inexplicably i once had 2 instances of Klopfgeist running. check out intrument 64 (even if its not in your environment.) if it pings into life with a klopfgeist on it delete the klopfgeist!

  • Klopfgeist not playing automatically in Mainstage 2.0.1

    Hey all -
I'm really stuck. In Mainstage 2.0.1, I'm trying to get Klopfgeist running as a separate instrument on its own channel strip, alongside a few other playback channel strips in a given performance. Basically I want a metronome on its own channel. I know I could use Ultrabeat, but I'd prefer to have a dedicated metronome instrument working, if at all possible. I haven't been able to find any information about this, other than the plug-in should follow the play/stop command. Doesn't seem to be the case. I set up Klopfgeist as the input on a software instrument channel strip, hit space to start playing, and I hear nothing. Does anyone have any kind of instructions to help out here? Nothing relevant in the Mainstage/Logic manual either, unfortunately.
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it!
    Phil

The easiest way is to just write in at http://www.apple.com/feedback/mainstage.html
The hard way is to create a developer account, request access to radarweb, and then write a bug through there.
I would suggest the first route, since it seems that several people have gotten their issues resolved for MainStage through that method (I don't know how well this method works for other apps though).

  • Better Alpha channel handling

I've asked for this a lot: alpha channel saving with PS is terrible, and could use an update. And today, I was embarrassed by a bug that caused our game engine to perform poorly as a result of the way Photoshop handles the alpha channel.
The bug: make a 1024x1024 canvas, give it an opaque alpha channel (100% white, every pixel), then Image Size it down to something smaller, like 128x128. Now look at your alpha channel: grey pixels all along the border. ARRGGGHHH!!!1!1! It interpolated, I'm sure, using black alpha outside the canvas that doesn't actually exist, changing, in a powerful, fundamental way, the nature of the alpha channel. Video cards care about this stuff: 99.9% opaque is not 100% opaque. This is terrible.
The request: That PS intelligently offer better defaults when saving an image with an alpha. Right now, it offers, "What was the last bit depth you saved an image to?" Regardless of the fact that the previous image may have no relationship to the following image being saved, the default offering is always "what I did last time". This enables very easy pruning of alpha channels that should be there, or adding opaque alpha channels that shouldn't be there, bloating the file size.
I'd like PS to determine if an alpha channel is present, and base its default choice on that. If one is present, default to 32-bits. If an alpha channel si not present, default to 24-bits. That easy.
If multiple alpha channels are present, I'd like a dropdown menu to pick which one I want. Right now, if you save a PSD with multiple alpha channels to a 32-bit TGA, it throws all alpha channels away, and saves the image with a solidly opaque alpha channel, the choice no one asked for.
For texture work, or works where the graphics card is the destination, not the printed page, this cavalier handling of alpha channels is definitely not sustainable.
I'd love to never have to ask for this again.

Generally speaking the resize of an image on a layer in which the canvas is exactly the size of the data will result in transparency peeking in around the edge (i.e., I'm agreeing with you here, just using Photoshop terms).  I've always thought this was kind of poorly thought-out too.  As you say, the algorithm must default to using 0 vs., say, replicating (or "clamping") to the alpha of the pixels right on the edge.
I suppose theoretically, the thinking is that if you were to EXPAND the canvas, the area around the image would be transparent anyway, and a subsequent resampling would then have the same result as the above.
Knowing this, one way to work around the problem would be to create a slightly larger image, then Canvas Size it down to your intended resolution.  That way there's layer data beyond the edges with which the resizing algorithm can work.  I realize that's probably not a practical solution in general, but a trick to keep up your sleeve if you really do need that 128 x 128 image with alpha solid to the edge.

  • Keep switch channel selected for multiple steps in a scan list

    Hi,
I have 3 switches (PXI-2575), one to apply a source to a given line, one to apply a sink, a one to apply a DMM.  I have all three switches triggering off each other as well as a DMM (PXI-4070). I apply a source to any given line with the source switch and then cycle through other lines using the DMM switch. Problem is i want to keep the wear on the relays of the source switch to a minimum (for each cycle through the DMM lines I'm selecting same source pin multiple times!). Is there a command for scan lists or some way of setting up the switches so that this can be done?
I thought it might be possible to use the debounce command ';' on its own to signify that i don't want to change the channel selection but this does not appear to work, the DMM times out whilst waiting for a trigger on the second reading. Simplified example scan list that i currently have:
    Break Mode: No Action
    Source Switch: ch0->com;;;;~ch0->com & ch1->com...
    DMM Switch: ch100->com;~ch100->com & ch101->com;~ch101->com & ch102->com;~ch102->com & ch103->com;~ch103->com & ch100->com...
I've also tried selecting the same channel in subsquent scan list entries which flags up error saying explicit connection already exists between the channels.
So is the only possibility just to needlessly wear out the relays?!

    Hi leon007,
I can understand your desire to keep the wear on the relays of the Source switch to a minimum.  I have a few questions, but we should be able to get the application working without needlessly wearing out the relays.
    1.  Can I assume you are using NI-SWITCH to program this application?  If you are using the NI-DAQmx Switch API, please let me know.
    2.  When you state "I have all three switches triggering off each other as well as a DMM", can I assume (leaving out the Sink switch for now) the scan advanced output of the Source switch (TTL0) is sent to the trigger input of the DMM switch (TTL0), the scan advanced output of the DMM switch (TTL1) is sent to the trigger source of the DMM (TTL1), and the measurement complete destination of the DMM (TTL2) is sent to the trigger input of the Source switch (TTL2)?
    3.  If you are still having troubles after this post, I would like to know the following so I can assist in testing the issue:  What versions of NI-DAQmx and NI-SWITCH do you have installed?
OK, that's it for my questions.  Now for yours.  Unfortunately, the debounce command ';' didn't work because it is simply a dummy entry - without creating a connection no scan advanced signal will be sent.  I've noticed this is not documented well in our help file, and I apologize for that.  However, attempting to create a connection where one already exists should be an error.  Either the user is attempting to redundantly connect channels (which shouldn't happen if niSwitch Get Relay Position is used), or there is a driver issue.
To keep the relay wear to a minimum, I want to suggest a couple of ideas.
    1.  Use only one trigger line for the DMM's measurement complete and one trigger line for all the switches scan advanced outputs.  To use this option, it cannot matter in your application which switch operates first, and which operates last.  The switch that always makes a connection (the DMM switch) will send a scan advanced output trigger with a set scan delay (configured in niSwitch Configure Scan Trigger) that should accommodate for all the switches.  This option may add delay in your application, but you will save relay life.
    2.  Use the DAQmx Switch API and the '&&' command between seperate switch connections.  In the DAQmx Switch API, you use just one scan list for all switch modules.  For example, we would perform the example scan list entries you provided with the following scan list:
    /Source/ch0->com && /DMM Switch/ch100->com; ~/DMM Switch/ch100->com & /DMM Switch/ch101->com; ~/DMM Switch/ch101->com & /DMM Switch/ch102->com; ~/DMM Switch/ch102->com & /DMM Switch/ch103->com; ~/Source/ch0->com & /Source/ch1->com && ~/DMM Switch/ch103->com & /DMM Switch/ch100->com...
The above connects the Source switch CH0 to COM, waits for the relays to settle, connects the DMM switch CH100 to COM, sends the scan advanced output signal, and waits for the trigger input before executing the next scan list entry.  This method will keep an order to the madness, as you will have the power to decide which switch operates first, and which operates last.
Let me know if I assumed anything incorrectly or if neither option works for you!

  • Metronome sound

I'm just getting started with Logic 8 Express and the metronome is making a sound with my external MIDI sound module, even though I have set MIDI at None in the Settings/Metronome panel. The sound is pitched and too distracting when I'm trying to record a new track. I see in the manual that the metronome sends on "instrument channel 128" so I'm guessing that's where the sound is being triggered but I don't know how to turn that off. This is making the metronome unusable and causing a huge problem. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    Thanks. I appreciate your help.
I discovered that the annoying sound was actually recorded on a track. When I set MIDI to off, I fixed the problem but the sound was still there, continuing to confuse me. I think things are working okay now. Thanks again for your help.

  • Pros and Cons of Verizon FiOS TV vs Comcast

I recently (two weeks ago) switched from Comcast to Verizon FiOS TV in the Portland, OR area and I have mixed feelings about it.  There are several things that are better, but also many that are worse than Comcast.
I'll get the bad things out of the way... and maybe I'm wrong about a few of them:
    CONS
-- My most expensive Mitsubishi TV that has worked fine on everthing via HDMI for the past 6 months (Comcast Motorola HD DVR, PS3, Wii, Wireless Media Extender) will not work via HDMI with the Verizon Motorola STB.  Green screen of death.  I don't have any optical audio cables, so I'm currently running with component cables and regular audio (which sucks).  This is horrible.
-- Changing channels sometimes doesn't work.  This happens when I'm flipping through channels using the Channel +/- buttons.  I'll hit + and the on screen display will say it has changed channels, but the previous channel's video and audio are still on the screen.  I have to change to the next channel and back again to get it to synch up.  This happens a lot.
-- The DVR skip buttons are nearly worthless to the impatient (read: me).  If you hit the skip button too fast, it either doesn't skip at all or causes the video to go blank.  On my other TV which is working via HDMI, this makes it have a green screen of death and I have to turn the TV off and back on.  This is a big deal for me.  I'm used to hitting the skip button quickly a set number of times to skip past known lenghts of commercial breaks.  I simply can't do that with Verizon.  I have to hit the skip, wait a couple of seconds, hit the skip again, wait a couple of seconds, hit the skip again, oops... it didn't skip... I must not have waited long enough, hit skip again.  THIS IS INFURIATING.
-- If I have rewound back into a certain channel's buffer, as far as I can tell there is no way to immediately return to live TV.  Comcast's remote had a LIVE button that would skip to the end of the buffer without clearing it.  The only way I've figured out to do it is change channels then come back to the original channel, but this sometimes clears the buffer so that isn't acceptable.
-- I can't adjust the end time of an already recording program.  This comes up frequently, especially with sporting events and programs that have been delayed because of sporting events preceding them.  I'll sit down in the middle of a show and start playing the recording from the beginning but notice the basketball game before it is still finishing.  I want to extend the end time of the recording so I can start watching it immediately from the end of the basketball game and not have to worry about whether it will be in the buffer or not.
-- If I have two succesive shows set to record, there are several seconds dropped between the two shows in the recordings.  Comcast would miss one maybe two seconds... Verizon misses almost 10.  Why does this matter?  Well, sometimes shows run a little long and with Comcast I would be guaranteed to see the end of that program on the beginning of the next recording.  Not so with Verizon.  For example, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.  Frequently the "moment of zen" at the end of The Daily Show is a few seconds after the end time of the show.  I could always see it at the beginning of the Colbert Report recording with Comcast. Now it is completely gone on the Verizon recordings.  South Park always runs several seconds long, but now I miss the end of every episode because it's not at the beginning of the Reno 911 recording.  THIS IS REALLY INFURIATING.
-- Whether or not a show is New is not easily discernable from the guide.  The "New" icon needs to be one of the ones that show up in the guide listing, not just the info screen.  Having to hit the Info button to tell if a show is new or not really annoys me.
-- The DVR does not offer to automatically extend the end time for live events as Comcast's did.  I have to go through several annoying steps to extend the end time.
    PROS
-- I can record sporting events as a series, which Comcast didn't let me do.  This is great!  I no longer have to go through the guide and manually record English Premier League, Champions League or MLS games.  I just set up series recordings.  This, I REALLY like.
-- The channel selection is way better (more HD, more music, more sports)
-- I don't have to buy the entire latin language channel package just to get Gol TV which has english audio too.  THANK YOU!
-- The series recordings do a much better job with cable shows that repeat a gazillion times a week than Comcast's did.  I couldn't even set many cable shows to be series recordings on Comcast or it would fill up my DVR.  THIS IS EXCELLENT.
-- Changing what series are being recorded or their priority doesn't cause all the shows you removed from the recording schedule to magically appear back in the schedule to be recorded like Comcast's DVR does.  THIS ROCKS.
So, there are several things I like a lot better than Comcast but there are also many things I hate about Verizon so far.  Coupled with the fact that my FiOS router just stopped working last night (blinking red light) requiring a new router to be sent meaning I'll have no internet all weekend (I'm at work right now), the fact that they still haven't buried the fiber and the fact that the installer lied to me about the green screen of death on my Mitsubishi, I'm seriously second guessing my decision to switch.

Yeah that's exactly why HBO says no HD On Demand, even though it makes zero sense since it's no different than watching a regular HD broadcast. I don't find it too big of a deal though considering all of the HD HBO channels Fios has combined with HBO airing everything a million times a week. Plus, if it keeps HBO from putting those annoying logos and banners like the other premium channels (Starz, Showtime, etc.) then I'm fine with it. If I'm paying extra money for a channel, it shouldn't have those in my opinion. HBO and Fios will have to add more HD On Demand for free relatively soon in order to stay competitive. It should be an easy thing for them to do.
The SD picture is better with a 7216 DVR than the 6416 DVRs. I also switched from Comcast and the SD picture with my 7216 is very noticeably better than Comcast's boxes, so I'd try playing around with your settings or switching to a 7216 box if you don't have one. Almost everybody I've talked to thinks their SD picture is better than comcast's. Mine, although not as clear as HD obviously, isn't pixelated or blurry at all. Even G4, a channel owned by Comcast, is greatly improved over Comcast's signal. G4 on Comcast was almost unwatchable it was so pixelated. Since Fios is fiber, they don't hav e to compress and degrade the signal as much as Comcast does .

  • No sight or sound of my Korg Krome on my Audio set up - midi prob.

hi everybody. I've just bought this beautiful Gold Krome. I can't get my Mac ( OS X 10.7.5 ) to recognise it. It is connected by USB ( I tried Midi cables but no joy at all there) and I've opened Logic Pro 9. I can record visibly on Logic, and I can see the Krome on the Midi Studio on the Mac. I can hear what the Korg plays on the amp and speakers I've got coming out of the Krome but cannot hear the Krome on the Headphones in my computer. Logic has recorded the notes I've played but has not recorded the Sound of the Krome. I can't hear them when I play back the tracks with the Krome disconnected. Also the Krome does not appear on the Audio Devices page of the Mac. Does anyone know what I have to do to get it working properly, as it's sending me mad....
    Cheers in advance,
    Steverino

Well, I can't get it to work Pancenter. I connected with an iMac interface as a trial but still no sound from my Mac or from my M-Audio interface which I've tried connecting the Krome's Mono out cord to as well.
If you notice the audio devices above in my Screenshot, there is no sign of the Krome. Also on the midi studio there is no in and out black triangles  to connect cables to other devices like on all the other demonstrations I have seen on YouTube and Lynda.com. This maybe coz it's a newer instrument and you dont need it any more. However, on the Korg Krome properties there's a one way port system only. ie if I change to Sound internal it's port 1, and if I click keyboard internal it's port 1. In each case the other port will change back to Zero when I click on the other option. I do have the Software Monitoring  box ticked. Logics metronome is audible by the way.
I get it that you said Logic is independent of the Mac but why does everyone point out it's got to be seen on the audio devices panel?
Im thinking there might be some setting on the Krome which needs altering?

  • Please Help: Multiple Midi keyboads in one patch

    Hi
I've set up mainstage, with each song named a s a patch.
So I can just click a song and it has the pre defined vocal, guitar channels set up.
However, I want to have two channel strips in each patch (controlled by two external midi keyboards).
This should be as easy as in logic, where you just assign and incoming midi channel to that of the external controller.
I can get one external keyboard working within each patch, but dont know how to assign the midi channel of the second keyboard in each patch.
The mac tutorial says to go to layoit and assign the midi channel there, but i only get "Grid resolution' in the area of the creen shown on the tutorial.
Surely this should be as easy as assigning an incoming midi channel for each channel strip shouldn't it?

Add a second keyboard to the workspace, assign it to your second MIDI keyboard. Now you have two MIDI destinations for channel strips.

  • Pre-fader metering

How many of you guys make use of pre-fader metering? Is it recommended?
I noticed that as soon as I turned it on a lot of my channels clipped and that I actually had to sort that out internally with a lot of the AU instruments, like RMX.
Let me hear some of your thoughts on this?
    Thanks.

    and it shows clipping,
Clipping? What, you mean that some of the meters are red, rather than orange? That's not clipping, that's just to indicate you have high levels.
    that equals distortion doesn't it?
No. You can't really clip in a 32-bit floating point DAW. The only place you can clip are at the outputs - for this reason, you must always come in under 0dBFS to print the final mix.
But inside the mixer, you can have very high signal levels. It's possible for instance, to take an audio channel, add +1500dB (yes, fifteen hundred dB), and then on the output channel, reduce the gain by 1500dB, and you will still have a good, undistorted signal.
This is the benefit of implementing mixers with floating point maths (as they pretty much all are, these days) rather than fixed point maths.
However, good practice says that your audio channel levels shouldn't be too high, use 24-bit audio, and avoid running everything into above 0dBFS levels for a number of reasons - this also helps keep your mix levels under control.

  • Anyone using Guitar Rig 2 in Logic?

I'm having trouble getting GR 2 to work in logic. It works fine as a stand alone but does not work in logic! If anyone can advise me on what I might do to rectify this problem I could sure use it. It's holding up a studio project and I'm not getting much help from Native Instruments support.

Hmmm, I dunno-the concensus in the NI GR forum is the
same? Is it just the driver that's bad or did the
    patch fix it?
    Hi Justin,
May be you could give me a blow by blow discription of how to make this piece of S**t work. I am still getting no input into logic, I can hear the metronome but no imput from the strat at all.
    Here's what I'm using:
    G5 duel 2 gig processor
    Dididesign 192 digital interface
    Mackie digital console DXB 200
the AU version of guitar rig 2 loaded
    logic version 7.1.1
OPEN AUDIO CHANNEL - load plug-in guitar rig
I have tried..... out of the guitar into pedal board, then out of the pedal board into the Console - NOTHING
Out of the guitar straight into the console - NOTHING
It does work as a stand alone through the console but so does everything else except guitar rig, but not in Logic!
Here's the really wierd part you can hear the metronome when the audio channel is armed and record is going - Still no guitar input at all.
Am I just doing something stupid? is the AU version not working? Do I need to load the VST? and help from you is always Greatly Appreciated, this is killing me time wise.
    Thanks again guys,

  • Alert sounds for no apparent reason

Several times a day a get an alert sound. I think it is the "sosumi" alert. But nothing apparent occurs when it sounds. I don't get any new emails, nor do I get a window with any information, directions, warnings, or anything else.
    Any ideas?

Yep, I do have Skype, but I've had it for a long time. These alerts sounds started only recently.
You should still check it to make sure the alert sounds haven't somehow been changed or turned on (if previously off). You also need to check any other apps that you have running, including anything in System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items. See if any of those might have some kind of audible alert sounds.
Shouldn't an alert sound be accompanied by something on the monitor screen?
Not necessarily. Depends on what the developer of any particular app decides to do.

  • 5.1 Meters in Mixer

Question about the individual track meters in the Multitrack workspace as well as in the Mixer.
I've set up a 5.1 mix using the 5.1 template. Eack clip in the multitrack view is a mono stem, and they are panned accordingly. Why do the corresponding meters displayed for each track as well as the corresponding meters in the Mixer display as 2-channel? Shouldn't they display as single channel meters just like any other mono track? Are they simply displaying as dual-mono? Am I missing a setting?
    Thanks.

I believe that template defaults to Stereo audio tracks feeding to the 5.1 Master.  Audition allows you to drop audio files of any channelization on an audio track, so in this case you have a mono audio clip on a stereo track, which will be treated for mixing and effects as dual mono.  You could add Mono Audio tracks which would give you the metering you expect, but you might get unexpected results from stereo effects if you were to add them to the Track Effects Rack.

Well its been about a month and a half so I guess you have your answer. In case you don't...
    // This shouldn't block.
    Socket requestSocket = requestChannel.accept();
The problem is quite simple. The ServerSocketChannel.accept() returns a SocketChannel. (Channel -> Channel).
You can get access to the socket using the SocketChannel.
    SocketChannel requestSocketChannel = requestChannel.accept();
    Socket requestSocket = requestSocketChannel.socket();
But you don't need the socket to read and write.

I also installed the firmware again and the router software a couple times. I do though get the increased speeds at times.
When I look at the channel I get hooked up at it is always the standard channel. Shouldn't I see the wide channel also?
Do I have a defective router?  I'm thinking of returning it.

I have a HP Deskjet 3050A J611g - I've had it a little more than a year (so out of warranty) and it has also been connected wirelessly to my HP laptop and other devices without any issues.  Last month I had to get a new DSL modem from AT&T (the brand is PACE and the model is 4111N).  Ever since getting the new modem my printer will not maintain a wireless connection.
I worked with AT&T tech support just after getting the modem and they were able to get me connected (they had remote access to my computer - uninstalled, reinstalled drivers, etc.) but within a few days I lost the wireless signal and cannot get it restored.  I have worked with AT&T tech support for more than 10 hours - several different reps - and still not working.  I have researched the issue myself, tried all of the troubleshooting steps provided by HP and others.  I'm at a loss.  My printer works if connected to my laptop with a usb cable but not wirelessly.
All my other devices are able to connect wirelessly to the modem, just not the printer.  I'm at my wits end!  What is left to try other than paying HP support for their assistance?

Access your router and make sure that MAC Filtering is turned off.  Also, set the encryption type to WPA2-PSK (AES) only as HP printers don't work well with the TKIP encryption type, and set the Mode to 802.11g only as that is the Mode that HP printers work best with.  Being on channel 11 shouldn't hurt anything unless there is a device that uses the same channel in the area then you might get some interference.  Give these things a shot, and let me know what happens.
