Mezzanine cards vs pci card

hi all
what are the differences between mezzanine card and pci card
in mean of speed, arcitecture, features supported etc
thanking you in advance

You wouldn't see any difference in speed. Installing a PCI card would just be duplicating the built-in ethernet and isn't necessary unless your networking setup needs two installed NIC's.

  • PCI cards, Airport cards...help me understand what is what and why?

Help me understand this wireless network "card" hardware stuff.
I have a dual 867 MHz G4 that I want to set up for networking with a PC so that both machines can access the internet (via DSL).
As far as I know, my Mac does not have an airport card of any kind. I'm planning to buy a Lynksys WRT 54G2 wireless router. Do I need to also install an airport card, or PCI card in my G4 to make this all happen? And, if so, what is recommended that will work with my G4?
The guys at the Apple store are telling me that all I need is a wireless router, and don't have to install anything extra, but what I'm reading on these various networking threads, is that just the G4 and a wireless router will not do the trick. After reading lots of threads here, it's sounding like I have to jump through hoops to set up a usable, working network. The Apple guy says that this is easy and basic. I'm thinking that THEY are thinking in terms of a newer machine, maybe? They're all young guys who probably think that nothing goes back farther than the iMac.
One thing the Apple guys were pushing is Airport Extreme, but at $180, I somehow thing I can get there for much less than that.
To make a long story short (hah...too late for that), what exactly do I need as far as a card, router, etc., and where do I get the right stuff (links would be helpful) to set up a Mac/PC network using my old decrepit G4?

    Hi-
    Networking Macs and PCs
    Setup a Home Network
    Create a small Ethernet network
    MacWireless
Check the above links, and you will be better educated in the basics and requirements of various networks.
The easiest, and least hardware intensive is the Ethernet network. Also, Ethernet is fast.
A note about Airport; you machine only accepts standard 802.11b Airport cards. In a word, very slow.
Airport Extreme, or 802.11g, is much faster, and 802.11n is the fastest available. To get 802.11g or 802.11n in your machine will require a PCI adapter.

  • K9N Platinum SLI - Powering up the PCIe cards

    Hey everyone,
I've got a K9N Platinum SLI board. This board has a power supply input point called PWR2, which according to the documentation is used to provide power to stable the operation of graphics cards. My graphic card is BFG nVidia 9750 GT. This card has the PCI-Express external power plug in the back, and my power supply has a dedicated (red) connector for this purpose, which I have attached properly.
The PWR2 is currently connected also, into one of the black 12V connectors. Otherwise, everything is running fine and smooth, but I am sometimes (once a day or so) experiencing random shutdowns during intense gaming (playing LotRO). Stress testing does not cause a shutdown: I've ran 3D Mark 2007 straight for 8-9 hours, while having a CPU Burner application toast the CPU at the same time. But no problems whatsoever. No other games exhibit this problem either.
Since I am providing dedicated power through the extra connector at the back of the card, should I leave the PWR2 connector unplugged ? Is there a chance that using these two connectors at the same time causes the 12V rail to overload, and the PSU shuts down to protect itself ? When this shut down occurs, the power LED is left blinking and I need to plug out the wall socket and wait for several minutes before the blinking stops and it starts up again.
My computer has an Enermax Liberty 620W power supply, and AMD Athlon X2 4600+ CPU. So there should be enough juice, at least. I've tried the tips and tricks suggested here. Using USB-connected Keyboard and Mouse does not correct the issue. I've also verified that this is not an overheating issue. My CPU is cooled by a Scythe Ninja tower heatsink and two 12 cm fans. It is possible that the northbride is heating up (it burns the finger on touch when under load), but from the Web, I've understood that the stock passive heatsink should be enough, and that the NB chip can take rather extreme temperatures.
    * UPDATE *
Plugged the PWR2 connector out from the MB, and update the BIOS to 1.10. It's working as usual, but haven't ran any games yet. Heavy gaming usually reproduces the issue, so I'll write more when I know more.

    Updated information on the case.
I've been running 2 days now with the PWR2 unplugged. I have had zero problems with shutdowns since. The only problem I now have is that the USB keyboard and mouse refuse to work in Windows XP after an initial bootup from powered down state. I have to unplug and replug them at the login screen in order to get them work again.
So, I decided to do a final sanity check, and replugged the PWR2, then went gaming. After 2 hours of playing, my computer shutted down for the first time. Plugging in the cable did not solve the USB problem either.
As of this day, I'm leaving it unplugged. It seems like an irrelevant connector, which just causes problems.
    ** Update **
After following Bosskiller's instructions on another thread about using the "Clear CMOS" button and then reconfiguring BIOS from scratch, the cold boot USB issues were solved. The USB devices now work straight after a cold boot, with no need to replug them.
I recommend that the PWR2 -connector info is added to the list of known problems in the sticky thread. If you have a GPU card which takes its power from a dedicated rail (and your PSU has a dedicated connector for this purpose), then leaving the PWR2 -connector unplugged might resolve your shutdown issues, like it solved mine.
After all, according to the manual, this connector is used to give more voltage to the PCI and PCIe busses, and some PCI/PCIe cards might not like this idea at all. There is a reason why these cards have an additional power plug on them...

  • IPod touch will not work with USB 2.0 PCI Card?

I have a dual processor PowerMac G4 that has USB 2.0 via a PCI card. When I plug in the iPod nothing at all happens. I haven't read anything about PCI cards not being compatible with the touch. Is anyone else having this problem?

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents...I've got the same problem...I've had a Keyspan USB 2.0 5 port card in my Dual MDD G4 for years and it's worked fine. Well, until a few days ago when I tried updating some stuff on our iPods. It would initially start working then lose connection. Now nothing at all with 5 iPods. It won't even show up on the desktop under Disk Mode. I did the same and it works fine under the old stock USB 1.0 but slooooooowwww. Is this yet another problem with Leopard? I've searched the Keyspan site and they don't have any updated drivers. Guess I'll look for a Belkin as well...ugh!!! Leopard is horrible! First no printer drivers, then no iSub support, now this!

  • IPod 30GB will not work with 3rd party USB 2.0 PCI card

I've had an IOGear PCI USB 2.0 card (GIC220U-BIO) in my Sawtooth for some time now, and have been using it flawlessly with my Canon i860 printer, and Canon LiDE 30 Scanner.
Just recently I received a Video iPod (30GB) and wanted to take advantage the high speed USB bus offered on that card to sync my iPod. The problem is, when I plug in the iPod to the USB port on that card, I get the transparent gray box telling me that I need to restart my mac by pushing the reset switch, or holding the power button for several seconds (in other words, freezes).
The iPod works fine with the built-in USB ports (albeit slow), as well as the high speed port on my iBook G4. Why am I getting this error? There are no drivers or firmware updates for this PCI card available.
    Is there a solution?

Yes, use a different USB 2.0 PCI card, like from Sonnet. I use a Sonnet in a G5 and it works great. There are (at least) 2 USB chipsets and I find the TI ones are great and the other not so great.
The fact it works on 1.1 and the 2.0 on the G4 at least tells you it is not the iPod and a USB 2 card is $20 or $30 at the most.

  • How to simutaneously use 2 PCI cards, one with traditional DAQ, the other with DAQmx?

    Hi,
I am currently trying to debug a system that used to work.. but sadly isnt anymore
A single computer contains 2 PCI cards (6110 & 6036E). The 6110 card is controlled by a fairly old software, programmed in labview, and hence, using Traditional NI-DAQ. The 6036e card is controlled by a more recent soft, programmed in LV as well but using DAQmx.
the AI/AO of the 6110 card is only momentarily used (20 sec consecutively, every minute) while the 6036E card is continuously receiving and sending data on its AI/AO.
Now the problem: the program that control the 6036E card freezes every time that the old prog access the 6110 card.. and then it works again perfectly until the next time that the 6110 card is used.
So my question: how can I make those 2 cards work simultaneously?
I dont think that it is because of the software nor because of the computer lack of memory/CPU if it used to work in the past. It might be about a wrong configuration of cards in the MAX but I couldnt find anything wrong there (no problem when accessing AI/AO of both cards through "test panel")
Thank you very much for you help.

That's what bugs me. The only thing that those 2 cards share is an AO of the 6110 connected to an AI of the 6036.
For the rest, nothing is common. The 1st program only deal with device1, while the 2nd prog only access dev2. There shouldnt be any problem and everything is working fine separately. Hence, why I was wondering if the traditional daq and daqmx might conflict on a same computer.
I just cant find out why the 2nd program controling the daqmx card just freeze everytime the 1st program access the traditional card. It actually doesnt freeze completly but becomes soooo slow, with about only 2 iterations of the main while loop during those 15-20 sec (instead of the normal 3-4000 iterations during such a period).
The computer specs are a 2.2ghz proc for 1G of ram and running XP, so it should be ok.. even though the computer does slow a bit down when the 1st prog access the traditional card.

  • Creative WebCam Vista Plus on USB PCI Card (VIA VT 6212) on Windows ME - doesnt work !!

PC turns off when the Vista Plus WebCam is connected to the USB port on my USB PCI Card
I use a primitive Intel Celeron 300Mhz processor with 64MB RAM on an Intel 440BX-AT Chipset running on Window ME. I recently installed a USB PCI Card (based on the VIA VT 622 chipset) which is a 394/USB 2.0 Combo. The problem is my 'Creative WebCam Vista Plus' doesnt work with it.
After I had installed the drivers on the 'Creative WebCam Vista Plus' CD - that is - without connecting the webcam to my USB PCI card the installation asks me to connect the webcam to the USB port and When I do that the PC just GOES OFF !
It starts up only in SAFE MODE and each time I've got to restore my PC.
How do I get the WebCam connected to my PC ?
    Thanks in advance

9hours later and Ive given up. I cant get the Vista 64 Ultimate to work with the Audigy 2Nx usb sound card. Im very angry and very frustrated (not to mention very tired from the 2 late nights Ive spent trying to work it out). Im not a PC-noob, but am only 4days into my Vista ownership................... Im guessing now, after much research, that there will never be a driver that gets these units to work with Vista 64bit. thats pretty weak Creative. However, I dont want to use crappy onboard sound for my gaming. What is the suggestion?Should I be looking at returning this unit, and buying either the X-Fi Xtremegamer?Fatality Pro as?a highend device, or the X-Fi Xtremegamer for $00 less? Or should I be looking at another manufacturer. Would either of these x-fi gamers work with Vista 64bit Ultimate?suggestions please?

  • How to adjust IRQ for PCI card within BIOS - K7T Turbo

    Hello,
I have a new Diamond firewire external 160 Gb harddisk.
In spite I have upgraded the BIOS for my K7T Turbo board to version 3.6 (by specs at MSI at least I should use version 3.4 to run 160 Gb HD's), I get I/O errors after trying to copy lot of data to the harddisk.  ;( Afterwards I am losing contact to the device and get exclamation marks within the system configuration.
In searching for the errors, it could be the controller of the harddisk itself is not running proper, because I get NO fault by the firewire device within my PC, but just the Diamond controller + harddisk.
To make a last try if I can fix it, I want to give the internal firewire card an own IRQ number. Now with PnP options, many devices are sharing the same IRQ 11.
How can I set a fixed IRQ to the fourth (4e) PCI card within the BIOS?
Looking to the settings it seems I only can manage it when it is an ISA card, but those cards are not used any longer in modern mainboards.
Here are some screendumps of the errors.
    1.
No problems after a hard reboot.
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/1_reboot_no_error_a.gif
    2. Closer look for the following devices.
The contents of the red boxe within the device system shall disappear after the error.. The blue ones do get exclamation marks
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/2_reboot_no_error_b.gif
3+4. Error messages after a short while when trying to copy many data (above 4 Gb).
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/3_Error_message.gif
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/4_Error_message.gif
    5. Errors within the system configuration.
Input 1 do get an exclamation mark first, afterwards input 2
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/5_many_data_error_b.gif
The input of the previuos mentioned red box "general volume" (one is of the Diamond controller), is lost.
Within the file explorer also the harddisk volumes are lost.
    6. The log files show a controller error of the disk at IRQ 11
    http://members.chello.nl/~l.obers/MSI/6_system_log.gif
Because no errors are found within the 1394 (firewire) device itself, I guess the problem is the Diamond controller of the harddisk.
But before going to the shop, I want to try to give the HD an own IRQ.
    Regards, Léon Obers

Mmm. I just see some other options.
The device called "1394 CF type II IEEE 1394 SBP2 device is an extrenal firewire Compact flash reader, not a Diamond controller. (It is connected, during the test, but not used for copying files).
In that case, it could be, that the firewire card itself is the troublesome device. First CF-card reader is lost from connection (exclamation mark), afterwards the Firewire harddisk.

  • Error Code 10 with GPIB PCI Card

PC used: Dell optiplex GX110, lastest Bios release, Windows 2000 SP4, GPIB Drivers version 2.2, Local Admin session.
After having install the driver (without the GPIB)and plug the card, this one is automaticaly recognised by the Os.
But, after the reboot (asked by the OS to validate the installation), the GPIB card appears, in the device manager, with an error code 10 (not started)....
I tried with two (new) differents GPIB PCI Card, two OS (First time with NT4.0 SP6 Drivers 1.7 and now, Win2000 SP4 Drivers 2.2) and with two PCs Dell Optiplex GX110 !
I even tried with a "Ghost" from an other PC (also an Optiplex GX110, with the same model of GPIB Card)
-> I obtain the same error each time !
    Help me please..........

    Hello,
Could you give me the exact reference of the board (PCI-GPIB, PCI-GPIB+, AT-GPIB, AT/GPIB-TNT...)?
Is the error code displayed on the Windows device manager (in the properties dialog box of the device)?
What is the exact description of the error code?
A PCI-GPIB installation do not need to reboot the OS if the NI-488.2 driver is correctly installed. The board should be recognized in MAX and you must be able to scan for instruments and start I/O communication with the device from test panels in MAX.
Update me as soon as you receive another feedback.
    Regards.

  • Pb with X200, NEC based USB 3.0 PCI card and external USB 3.0 HD

Hello, I ordered a USB 3.0 Express Card based on the NEC chipset. I am using a Lenovo X200 under XP SP3 and I have an external Buffalo Ministation USB3.0 HD. No problem to install the Express Card driver, the card is recognized but the HD won't mount. I have the USB connection beep and in the next 10 sec the USD disconnection beep. This is not a low power issue, I connected to the Express Card a power supply and have the same issue. In addition, this config, Express Card and Ministation Buffalo just work fine on a T60 under Windows 7. Any idea? Many thanks ! Tom

I have looked at several options and would be happy to go with either eSata or USB 3.0.  I have heard some bad reviews about the USB 3.0 PCI offerings out there though.
On the one hand, I have an unused eSata enclosure so I would not have to buy one,  on the other hand a few USB 3.0 ports on the machine would allow grerater expandability with a USB 3.0 hub hung off the back.  ( can you get eSata hubs?  never thought of that until just now)
The nearest thing to an eSATA hub is a 'SATA port-multiplier'. This allows connecting up to 4 SATA drives to a single SATA port.
Note: Not all SATA or eSATA cards support 'port-multiplier' functionality. The CalDigit card says it does support port-multiplier enclosures, what this means is that a single eSATA cable can be connected to an external box containing multiple SATA drives and see and use them all.

  • Using a PCI card INTERNAL USB port

Hello to anyone reading this !
I've just installed a PCI card in my G5 in order to add more USB ports. When I started searching for one, i was surprised to see most had an internal port, I couldn't really see the use of that. A friend told me it can be used on PCs to plug an extension towards a free port in front of the main unit.
Considering i can't do this on my G5, I was wondering how to take advantage of this internal port and I'd like to know if I can plug my USB Bluetooth adapter, as it doens't need to be visible and it would free one of my external ports. The question is, are there some security restrictions regarding what you put INSIDE the unit? Isn't it too hot inside to leave the bluetooth key or anything else that is not designed to be inside?
    Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks in advance
    iVince

With all the airflow in a G5, I don't think heat will be a problem, but a Bluetooth unit probably will not be useful inside a shielded metal case. The Apple Bluetooth card connects to an antenna wire that goes outside the shielded section, but I don't think there is any way to connect that wire to the USB Bluetooth module.

  • Sound Blaster Live 24-bit PCI Sound Card and Creative Sound Blaster PCI Card not detect

Ok here is my problem. I bought a Creative Sound Blaster PCI sound card a while back and it was working fine but recently when I would boot up my computer and try to play music say off of Winamp it says Bad DirectSound Driver. When I check device manager it shows no sound card there and in sounds and audio devices it says no audio device. Now my brother believed this to be a card fault so we went to Frys and bought a Sound Blaster Li've 24-bit PCI card. I uninstalled the old drivers and installed this new one but yet it's the same problem. My assumption was that Windows XP had something conflicting so I reinstalled the OS. It found the card and I installed the latest drivers?off of this site but now it does the same thing yet again with a fresh install of Windows XP. The card has been in all 3 of my PCI slots and it will detect it for a moment but then acts like as if the card was never installed. Like I never installed a sound card into the computer. The onboard audio has been disabled for a while now but I do not know what the problem could be. I did Scan for hardware changes but it doesn't show up. Sometimes when the card is detected if I do scan for hardware changes and the card is there it will just magically disappear from the device manager as if it was never there. Even when I try to load music and I see the card is detected it will not play the music and ends up locking up Winamp to the point that sometimes will go BSOD. Now I would really like to find out what the issue is because I am planning this weekend to swap out my motherboard with a duplicate board to see if that will end up fixing the problem but I want to find out if there is any other way to fix this issue. Thank you.Message Edited by AuXoIs on 02-25-200808:28 PM

Hmm what other options is there for the bios on PCI slots? Also anything you connect to the motherboard can have oxidization (I think its that) build up on the connection. Check the connector on the card and get a eraser (Pen eraser is better) and give it a good cleaning. The connector might have alot of build-up on it and you can see it by a dark yellowy colour. I cleaned my graphics card and ram connectors after they got alot of the build-up on them. On a older computer my graphics stopped working and this fixed it. Also I went away for a while (like a month) and came back to see that my puter didn't display anything. Opened it up and saw that the graphic card had alot of corrosion? on the card connector and in the slot. Does that if you computer is turned of for a long time. Had a heck of time trying to clean the slot out. One other thing that it could be is the sound card is faulty. I had an audigy 2 and it died a while back . It picks it up and then try and use it computer freezes and the after restart it's not there anymore. Hope it's not that problem. Hope this gives you something to go by.
