MG3200 poor colour/contrast quality

Hi,
I have a PIXUS MG3200 & I bought some Canon 5x7 photo paper for printing images.
The paper is Glossy standard kind.
Printing an image from Photoshop I have selected "Glossy Paper" & also "Photo Paper Plus Glossy II"
I made sure that the print quality settings were set to High.
I allowed Printer to select colour matching, but I also tried setting photoshop to manage colours.
The printer is about a month old & this is the first time I have printed on glossy paper.
Regardless of the above settings the print quality is very poor - I mean it is very washed out, low contrast. The actual resolution is fine, but the image is flat & lacking vibrance & the colour is muddy.
I have also printed the image using 'preview' (OS X default image app) & results were the same, again I was careful to select glossy paper & high quality print settings.
I am attaching a pic so you can see what i mean, the image below is close to what i am seeing, but actually the image below looks better than real life (slightly) the real photo has even less contrast.
Can you offer any advice for me to be able to improve results?

These two photos demonstrate this problem perfectly... I was trying to copy a developed photo initially, so I thought that was the issue, but even after I scanned it, the image printed out with poor contrast just like yours. I'm really disappointed as my 10 year old Epson DX6000 printed images far superior to this. The MG3200 series is also billed widely as producing 'photo lab quality photos' which this is certainly not. Any help with this annoying inferiority would be hugely appreciated!

  • Poor Colour Print Quality using Canon Pixima 5000

    Hi there.
I am printing to an IP5000 off the back of an airport form MBAir with iPhoto. THe colours on the printouts are completely washed out with either a heavy blue tinge (for dark photo's) or redish tinge for lighter photo's.
I have tried HP daily paper 190grm and Kodak, both suffer the same problem, so it feels like the settins or printer driver is at fault.. can anyone point me at a calibration exercise to improve this? or offer any advice?

    Hello David,
I use the iP5200 at home for photo printing, which is a slightly later model to your iP5000. From the iPhoto print dialog open and the iP5000 set as the printer, I first select the paper type in the Presets menu, such as Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, which is a Canon 260gsm high gloss stock. Not sure which setting would be ideal for the papers you are using, especially given that the Preset (profiles) are based on Canon papers.
I then click Print to proceed to the normal print dialog and ensure the Color Matching menu is set to Canon Color Matching?
Also, I change to Quality & Media, ensure the media type menu showing the same paper selected in the previous Presets menu and then set the Print Quality to High?
Again, this procedure is for Canon stock. Using the Canon paper profiles may provide the unwanted results you are getting with the HP and Kodak papers, although I have used Kodak photo paper previously and the results have been okay.
If you cannot get a good result for your stock using the Canon paper profiles you may have to look at using ColorSync instead of Canon Color Matching. This would then require you to have an ICC profile for the paper you are using to ensure you get a reasonable result. Check the vendors web site for a profile for the papers you have. This will go a long way to helping you obtain an improved colour output.
Another suggestion would be to purchase a small amount of Canon photo paper. You could then print from iPhoto with the correct paper profile selected and see whether you are happy with the output. This would help determine if the paper is the cause of your current symptom.

  • Poor Colour contrast from YouView box

The YouView box arrive,d just as we we off for a week. On installing later, the colours are weak and the picture blacks are dark grey. Other kit connected to the TV has no problem, with good contrast, nice blacks and no jittering!
I've checked/swapped leads, but the output of the box is very disappointing. The older Vision+ box (black) gives a far better picture. Any suggestions? I assume the BT troubleshooter will access the USB socket on the front to tweek settings?
    Solved!

Yes, thanks for that. I had already tried the scene button (Sony KDL-37EX503), but its not able to give the contrast I get on other HDMI inputs with other kit. I would have thought there would be standardisation of HDMI signal characteristics on connected kit.
I've tried older Vision+ and PVR recorders in different inputs (sockets) using different cables and all is well with good picture and contrast. It's just the Humax box which is out of line.
Unbelievably, the latest from Mumbai  (0800 111 45678) suggest repositioning the aerial............ Thankfully, my wife has stopped me climbing trees and onto roofs.

  • HT204370 poor music video quality

I have downloaded several itunes music videos, but so far I have been very disappointed. They have all been a poor quality on the computer monitor, ipad and ipod, the audio is too quiet to even hear properly in one!
Yesterday I downloaded PON PON PON by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and the quality of the video is terrible. It is hazy, unclear and the colour is faded. The sound is not great either.
I was wondering if there was a way for me to improve the quality or if this is just the regular quality of videos from itunes? If so, I would be better to watch it on youtube, it has a far better quality even if it does buffer.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I have the same problem, the colour and quality of the Pon Pon Pon video is absolutely horrendous. Did you find a resolution to this problem?

  • Poor colour on export

    Hi guys,
I'm building an image slideshow which appears fine within FC but upon export via QT conversion the colour and quality is very poor. Washed out and nothing like the original.
Settings > DV PAL, Quality - Best, Interlaced
Is there a way to overcome this?
    cheers
    Chuck

    Thanks guys!
    Final output is for TV.
I'm now looking at building it in HD 1920 x 1080 and the initial export looks much better.

  • Colour / contrast issues while capturing DV/HDV (and Hi8)

I have a Canon Vixia HV30 which I use to record HDV and DV, and use iMovie HD/6 to capture the footage. I'm noticing during import that the colour and contrast quality both seem to be degraded compared to what I see on the camcorder screen (and how it would appear if I were to plug it in directly into my television). Is this just something to do with the playback during import (ie it's not displaying the level of quality that's it's actual capturing?)
I actually noticed something similar happening when using iMovie HD/6 to capture Hi8/Digital8 footage from my old Sony DC-TR460 (colour-quality loos); but I assumed that had to do with the passthrough occurring on the Digital8 Sony camera.
Any insight into any of the above? I want to have the highest possible quality capture of all my tapes!

Thanks. Yes my next step will definitely be to burn a DVD of the video and compare it to playing directly off of the original tape from the camera to the tv.
I suppose a follow-up question is what IS a good playback format? I've attempted to export this captured video using numerous settings and nothing ever comes out looking good, including H.264 with the deinterlace option selected. Moreover the dulled colour/darkness issue persists no matter what settings I try.
I'm starting to wonder if it's all worth shooting HD/DV footage at all if I want to share it online. I don't have any problems with the little AVI files my 6 Megapixel Canon Cybershot takes; they look great and I don't need to do anything to them! I obviously want to have the best quality source files possible, and yes, would love to be able to play it on big widescreen tvs as well. But it seems to me one precludes the other!

  • TV Anywhere poor video capture quality

I have a Celeron 1.7, 20 and 60 gig hd at 7200 rpm, 512M of ram. My capture is of very poor quality. I have used the MSI software and also Virtual Dub. Still poor video capture quality. Anyone tell me what I can do or how to do this right?

If you use a compressing codec in real time, you need lotsa CPU.
Try using a lossless codec such as Huffyuv (you'll need lotsa disk) for the real time capture and then compress afterwards.

  • Ofiicejet Pro K550 - poor colour - seems to be yellow at fault

My K550 has suddenly started giving poor quality colour. I've run the diagnostic page and the colour blocks from left to right are black, cyan, magenta, magenta, cyan. When I run the colour recalibration the top is black fading to gray, the next down solid magenta and the third a very very (almost non existent) pale yellow. I've changed the yellow cartridge but this makes no difference.
Can anyone suggest what is wrong.
    Best regards
    Doug

The only cartridge with yellow ink is the #57 cartridge.  It would appear you have a defective #57 cartridge.  If this is an original HP then check the warranty information as shown here.  Likley causes for this issue are ink cartridges that have stored for years or refilled/remanufactured cartridges.
BTW, the ink cartridges are as follows:
56  Pigmented black, not used when printing on photo paper.
57  Color cartridge with cyan, magenta and yellow dye based inks.
58  Photo cartridge with light cyan, light magenta and photo black dye based inks.

  • Poor colour depth/banding with Apple Mini-DisplayPort-to-VGA adaptor?

I'm using the Apple Mini Display Port to VGA adaptor to hook my MBP up to a projector in the theatre where I give lectures.
I am getting colour depth/ banding issues - images seem to be displayed in thousands of colours, rather than millions, creating really bad banding problems.
I know it isn't an issue with the projector - for comparison purposes I tried playing a DVD through a DVD player connected to the projector, and then through the MBP connected to the projector, and the diference in colour depth was really noticeable. In fact it was virtually unwatchable through the MBP.
Is there a preference pane I'm missing somewhere which will increase the colour depth?
Is there a better adaptor than the Apple one that I need to buy?
Or is this a problem inherent in the minidisplay port to VGA conversion process?
Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If your monitor has DVI input, get the DVI adapter. DisplayPort is digital, DVI is digital, but VGA is analog - the signal conversion will result in a (slight) drop in quality.

  • Getting poor still image quality in SD project on CS4

hey guys. sorry if you heard this one, but i havent seen anything addressing this.
i am using CS4 to edit a Standard def project and i am running into a problem with still images being choppy and distorted.
I tried all options to produce a better quality, but i get poor quality in the timeline monitor even after i render preview. the ouput
when i export is equally bad.
what i did find out was that if i switched projects in favor of an HD 720 the images are crisp on import and look good.
am i missing something. i assumed the images looked bad because they werent rendered and since i didnt need to render to edit i didnt want to lose the time, so now i'm stuck with those images, or i have to scrap the project and start again in hd and i prefer not to. i would have done it in hd, but the footage i was given was SD. anyways i would appreciate some help. thanks!
btw i've tried to export in both MS DV and WMV
i have tried importing psd png and jpg i have used all these in the past in pro2 with no problem

still images being choppy and distorted.
    Can we see a sample?

  • Poor iChat audio quality

When my friend and I use FaceTime on our Macs the sound quality is pretty good, but when we video chat on iChat the sound quality is pretty poor, muffled. We've tried limiting bandwidth and stuff but that didn't help, any ideas? Also, when just using audio chat, the sound is much better

    Hi,
iChat takes the setting from System Preferences > Sound > Input as the volume you send to your Buddy.
Ideally this needs to move the Blue response bar to at least Half Way (preferably 3/4s) but not bang in to the right hand end.

  • Poor On Demand Quality

I have had BT Vision for 10 days now and Im finding that the quality of the on demand is quite poor its a bit hazy around people and quite off putting to watch. It happens on all channels. • Poor SD DVD quality

I was able to burn a sd dvd copy of my film project and it did play on my dvd player but I was quite disappointed with the quality of the image and sound. It reminded me of some black market copies of films I have seen, the picture is not crisp, the text is blurred and not legible and the audio sounds like it is distant and is quite. Would I have better luck going with a HD DVD, but how do I do this since when formating the program does not recognize any video files if set on HD?

    Gilia wrote:
The text was inserted via FCP as a Boris Title 3D. I did compress using Compressor and finished with both m2v and a3c files. I imported both files into DVD SP and the preview of the material looked pretty decent. After burning though, playing it in a regular dvd player and watching it from a normal distance in front of my tv, the quality seemed to have been compromised a some point in the finishing.
The fonts size/color can be part of the issue. Did you export directly to Compressor from the timeline or did you export as self contained or reference movie? (Later on you mention DV, and DV codec makes text look very poor generally) You may want to try to export to a uncompressed codec if you were going that route (or if direct to Compressor was not giving good results, keeping in mind the text size/color issue) Also do a quick search for Boris to see if someone else mentioned, I recall it being mentioned (maybe ;))?
If there were problems with the compression and encoding from Compressor, wouldn't it be obvious in DVD SP preview? Isn't the preview suppose to be a good representation of what will be outputted?
Nope, not at all Really more for checking layout
The film was shot on mini dv professional quality. I know it is not the best but I expected better.
Also, I did do some basic color correction inside FCP. Again, the picture looks fine both in FCP and DVD SP in the viewer and preview windows.
If you are not using a calibrated monitor to color correct it could be an issue. Also take a look here (black level issues can cause washout looks)
    http://www.signvideo.com/dv-black-levels-dvd-authoring-mpeg-2-part-1.htm
Often black levels can make a DVD look washed out or like a poor copy as you are describing (different issue than the text)
I can try to compress the material again and I can adjust the bit rate, but I thought the higher the bit rate the better the quality.
Not necessarily - sometimes high rates can cause playback issues
    http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_3.php
And often there is a law of diminishing return. For instance the size/quality between a rate of 7 and 7.5 may not really be noticiable.
The film is not very long, just 64 min so it isn't a matter of space on the dvd. Would it be better to compress this time in high def?
You would be upscaling and high def settings will not work for a SD disc, only HD, so no real benefit there (and probably makes things worse.)
    By the way, THANK YOU!!!!
No problem, hang in there, it will get better
