My son had the same issue with his iPhone and WindowsVista. What I found seemed to work:
Uninstall iTunes9
Download again, but SAVE where you can find it, don't press run
Run iTunes9 to install
Reset the iPhone
Plug the iphone into the computer
"Restore Iphone"
this worked for me. maybe it does for you?

i am getting this for the first time when i sync .iphone 3gs error message itunes could not sync calendars to the iphone because the sync server failed to sync iphone
I have tried the suggestion to reset the sync log to no avail. Anyone have another idea? This just started after I downloaded 4.3.5.

You probably didn't install iTunes from a user account with Administrator privileges.

IPhone 4 - Error 9 during Restore
Hi there,
I'm trying to Restore the iPhone but Error 9 keeps popping up. The iPhone is literally a dud now just stuck on the screen with the cable and iTunes symbol.
I've tried doing the Restore on a 13" MB Pro, iMac and Windows Vista 64 bit, all bringing up the same error. I am running iTunes 9.2.1 on all machines.
Any advice or info appreciated.
Thanks.i agree mate the restore should fix the problem but guess what, it forces itunes to do the update. SO update is faulty and restores forces the update see the problem

IGadget Connect to iTunes;
Turn off your iGadget (holding the power / sleep on top of the device until it shut down);
Hold the power button / sleep and home simultaneously, after exactly 10 seconds holding both buttons (time), release only the power button / sleep, and
Hold down the home button until iTunes displays a message saying that a device was connected in recovery mode.
While your iGadget is in recovery mode the screen is completely black, which does not mean that the phone is switched off or stopped. Carefully follow the instructions in iTunes. -
I cannot download an audiobook via ITunes Store on IPhone. Error reads ''unable to download audiobook"
Once I established a better WIFI connection, I solved this problem. I originally suspected it was an IOS-ITunes capability problem. Despite downloading the audiobook, I wasn't able to access it unless I plugged iPhone into Mac.

I have the iphone 4 and when syncing my iphone an error message appears half way through saying "itunes cannot sync apps to the iphone because the apps installed on the iphone cannot be determined" can anyone help? I cant back up my iphone as this appears every time :-(
As another post suggested, I restarted both the iPhone and the computer, and that fixed the problem.
