  • Ipod suffle doesnt recognize mucic

I just got a new ipod shuffle and it works how it should, mostly. There is a group of song that it just doesnt play. Everytime I put them on the ipod and hit play, it says "please use itunes to sync music"
At first i though it might be the file format, but it is the same as others that the ipod does regonize. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

If you use the "convert to AAC" setting on the iPod's Summary tab, you may get some loss in audio quality on the songs that are converted, because you are converting from one "lossy" format to another one.  For the "good" songs, you should avoid this...
There is a command in iTunes to convert specific MP3 songs to AAC.  You can right-click on the song in the iTunes window to see this command, Create AAC Version.  NOTE:  You can change the settings for the conversion in iTunes preferences, General tab, Import Settings button.

I have restored, formatted, tried different PC's always get same result. Visited genius bar and they declared that my iPod was healthy but refused to move enough content to the iPod to reproduce the problem. iPod is a little under 2 yrs old.
My confidence and respect regarding Apple and it's products is now greatly in question. I spent $400 duchats on this thing and I am starting to feel like an unappreciated client.
    Thanks for any help...

    Hullo ...
let me follow up on this again. I've followed your advice, de-installed spybot, no change. I looked through the windows support help base, nothing. While trying out different things, I started getting a "delayed write failed" message, and I did some things they suggested (including adjusting the registry - me, adjusting the registry!)and it went away, and now all I get is the "open door" message again.
That is: everything works absolutely fine, I plug in the i-pod (latest version i-tunes and i-pod is up to date), it's recognized instantly by the explorer as well as i-tunes. I've run all scans you can possibly run on it, and it is fine (no corrupt files, nothing). I've restored it twice through i-tunes, twice through the explorer. I've changed the drive letter.
It starts the synch fine (it's still almost empty after the last restore), but at some point, I get the error message. Interestingly enough, *up to* that point, it'll synch fine - I can disconnect it and play on it whatever's been synched thus far. I can also modify my i-tunes settings and preferences, all of which i-tunes will recognize and adhere to. It is just unwilling to put more than 1GB of stuff onto my 20GB i-pod.
Something I've noticed is that it is sometimes indicating apparently faulty charges in the beginning (though that is quickly corrected once the synch starts), as in, it'll recognize a certain amount of audio files, but also claim a random amount of "other" files, which should not be there (apart from the 30MB or so of genuine i-pod software).
Anyhow. I haven't seen any solutions to this on the forums or in the apple help files, but people appear to be having this problem still. Any ideas or input would be very much appreciated ...
    Thanks.

You might want to check the tags (i.e. Get Info) of your songs to see if they have been marked as "Skip when shuffling". If that happens, and your iPod is in shuffle mode, then the playback will stop at the end of the song.
You can see this in the "Option" tab for Get Info for a song (or group of songs). You could also test this theory by taking your iPod out of shuffle mode to see if you can play more than one song.
If this is the problem, then you simply need to remove the "Skip when shuffling" option from all songs in your library, then re-sync your iPod. I am not sure how your library could have been tagged like this, but the symptoms you describe sound very much like what I've seen with others.

Maybe yes, maybe no. Bast on other discussions Apple may say the damage was cased by misuse like connections with the cable reversed.. You will have to ask Apple.

  • IPod won't sync any of my purchased mucic

After restoring my iPod to factory settings it is not syncing any purchased music I have lost everything. Ant ideas? Thanks

Now I am really starting to get ******. Especially after just watching an Apple commercial claiming that their products just work out of the box.
I have tried everything on this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300766. Including recreating my iTunes library, which wiped out my playlists and upon re-importing my music duplicated most of my songs. Just spent 3 hours deleting dups. Resynched to my BRAND NEW iPod (having restored it about 4 times now) and guess what? Still skips ONLY the music I purchased on iTunes. How freakin ironic, iTunes DRM preventing me from playing music I purchased on iTunes. And no response from APPLE COMPUTER CORP on this issue.
Starting to lose my faith in Apple. It seems like they are starting to act like Microsoft.

  • IPod Nano Firmware crash, reproducable

I was recently given an iPod nano 4GB for my birthday. My review is here: http://megaphone.unixdaemons.com/?p=25
I'm subscribed to several podcasts. I use the latest version of iTunes on Windows XP. This morning I sync'd up my podcasts and there were two new episodes (I am subscribed to a total of 5 shows, and 2 shows had each a new episode). Before sync'ing up the iPod, I decided to do some cleanup.
Through iTunes, I cleared everything on my iPod (songs and podcasts). I noticed that although the podcast episodes themselves were cleared, the podcast show FOLDERS still existed on the iPod, but were empty.
After some playing around, i noticed that if you have at least one empty podcast folder (I don't know why iTunes doesn't garbage collect empty podcast folders?), the iPod nano firmware boots up, and you can browse the high-level menu items EXCEPT FOR MUSIC. If you click on the "Music" high-level menu item, the firmware crashes and the Apple logo appears on the nano screen as it resets itself. If you try to just hit "play" without entering the Music sub-menu it actually does play and you can skip forward and backward. But the moment you try to browse the Music sub-folder, the OS crashes.
My workaround is, since I have 5 podcast show folders on the iPod, to keep at least ONE episode from each in each folder, and this works just fine, although my iPod now stores some old shows, taking up some space, even though I've already listened to them.
    Help?
    Cheers,
    Bosko.

So I called Apple Support and apparently the problem has not yet been reported but while talking to the service rep found a more viable workaround.
The bug seems to be that if you have Podcast episodes in iTunes that you drag over to your iPod, the first time you do so, a directory underneath the "Podcasts" category on your iPod will be created to store episodes for the given show. If you then go ahead and highlight each episode within that show's folder on your iPod with iTunes, right-click, and click on "Clear", you'll notice that while the episode disappears, the empty directory FOR THAT SHOW will remain within "Podcasts" on your iPod.
And that's where the problem is. The iPod nano firmware seems to crap itself when you then try to access the "Music" top-level menu item if there is at least one empty podcast show directory on it.
The workaround to not waste any space is to access the iPod via iTunes, and instead of clearing individual shows, right-click on the podcast show's folder itself and click on "clear", this will properly get rid of all the episodes within that show AS WELL AS THE SHOW'S FOLDER.
Hopefully someone will fix the firmware bug in the future. For now, this is how to deal with it.
    Cheers,
    Bosko
