  • Mac Pro with Dell UP2414Q Sleep Wake Issue

    Hi,
I have *two* Dell UP2414Q displays connected to a new Mac Pro, both using Display Port 1.2 (MST) setting in order to get 4K @ 60Hz.
Works fine. Except Google Chrome which is really lame at redrawing all these pixels when you scroll up/down.
The issue is: when the displays go to sleep for a longer period of time (actually it's probably when the Mac Pro itself has gone to sleep) and I wake the system up, the Dells sometimes won't wake up!
And if I start fiddling with the display buttons I will get a half image (left half of the screen). Same problem on each display except sometime it's the first one that doesn't wake up, sometimes it's the second one and sometimes it's both. Unfortunately the situation where they both wake up is extremely rare
Has anyone else had similar troubles?
Note: I have had similar sleep wake issues with just one UP2414Q connected.
    I'm running OS X 10.9.4 (of course).
I'm also having a 3rd smaller display connected though a DVI adapter. That one wakes up 100% of the time. I previously had 3 of these and they did always wake up all 3 without issues.
    -Francois.

I have this issue with the UP2414Q monitor and my new Mac Pro . . . . . and then some.
I started by losing the right half of the screen on wake up. After about two months of use, my monitor has developed a fault where both sides of the monitor are displayed but at seemingly very different calibrations. The left half is contrasty and the right half seems to be correctly matched to my working profile. This is using the display port connections. HDMI doesn't have this problem but it also won't run at 60Hz, which was an important factor in my choice of this monitor.
At this point I contacted both Apple and Dell. Although I have had quite a few different Apple support staff over a period of a week or so, they did keep good notes, were very patent and seemed to take a genuine interest into trouble shooting it. I cannot say the same for Dell. At first they did ask questions and did the right thing by sending a replacement. It worked fine on display port, then on HDMI but when I connected it back to display port the split screen problem occurred on the brand new replacement one too. After a day of fiddling with connections it went back to displaying correctly with all connections and has not reverted but it does now have the dead right halve on wakeup more frequently than before. I reconnected the original monitor but that has the split screen problem and I can't find a way of getting it to go away. It is unusable.
This incident with the replacement monitor was five days ago. In that time I have tried to contact Dell support by the original e-mail of the technician that initially helped and by phone, through the support number. The email gets the repeated response "Dear Sir/Madam, Thank you for your email. I have left for the day, hence my reply will be delay". It happens in the mooring or the afternoon. A phone call to Dell's support number always starts with a promise to be transferred to the technician dealing with my case and, without fail ends by me being left on hold indefinitely with a terrible one minute audio loop followed by a repeated promise of the next available agent. I once waited over 30 minutes, just to test it. I live in Australia but this was clearly an international call centre. Dell obviously have no intention of dealing with my case. They will have to talk soon though because I still have an extra one of their monitors.
Unless there is a firmware update for this monitor, I would strongly advise against buying one for a Mac, or any Dell product for that matter.

  • I want to transfer my entire library from a Mac to a Dell

I tried to use the backup function to save all my music to DVDs. The music is copied to the DVD, but when I try to import it to my Dell, it copies a few songs, locks up, and spits the DVD out asking for the next disk. It seems to only transfer songs that I purchased; not my entire library. Is there a way to get the entire library from one computer to the next? My Mac is old and I want to put all my music to the new computer.

assuming all your media files are in the default location, copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media) folder to the exact same location on the new machine.
you can use an external HD or your local network.

  • Wireless print server with Mac G4 and Dell PC's

I have a belkin wireless router and a linksys WPS54G print server. Hardwired by ethernet cables to the router are two computers 1) Dell 2400 and 2) Apple G4.
I am trying to get the Apple to print to the printserver. the linksys software set the Dell up and the print server and they work fine. I have tried everything i can on the Apple but no luck. Seems to be the driver. The printer is printing gibberish from the mac. The printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R320. I dowmloaded the drivers for Mac OS 10.4.4... from the epson website - I chose each one for the printer on my MAC and tried to print. The result was either no print out or differing gibberish each time. What can I do?

Please search this forum. Your precise issue has been covered several times. You have to use a CUPS driver for network printing - Epson's drivers are Carbon, not CUPS. Start by updating the Gimp-Print drivers that Apple included in OS X to the next newer version, now called Gutenprint 5.0.0:

  • How do I get Keynote from Mac to a Dell?

After intending to for over a year and actually working on a Keynote presentation for many months, I finally finished the project last week. My intent has been that when I'm done that I'd convert to Power Point and display all my work on a Dell PC in the building.
I did the conversion thing as per instructions in the Keynote manual. I received a message that conversion was complete but there were a few errors. Ok, I thought, I'd read that it doesn't convert perfectly.
Now what? I figured putting the Power Point file on a 128 MB jump drive would be an easy way to get the presentation to the Dell that is hooked up to the Power Point projector. I did just that and gave it to a PC person. He could not even get the jump drive to show up on his desk top or my file. He tried 2 different Dells - same thing. I've been trying to figure out that problem.
I tried emailing him the file but was told the file exceeded file size. File size is 2.5 mb in Keynote. It inflates to 6.5 mb when converted to PP!
Meanwhile, I accidentally opened the P.P. file on my Mac. What a mess! My beautiful presentation sure isn't what I made it to be. Changes of colors to make text unreadable, change of shapes of text boxes so they don't fit in shapes I created them in anymore. Is all this normal?
If so, I'm not sure it is worth the effort to convert to Power Point!! IF I can somehow get the Power Point version on one of the Dells, will I be able to clean up the mess on a PC that has the Power Point software. Is it worth the effort?
Should I just consider physically picking up my chunky older iMac (at least it has a handle on top unlike my newer eMac!) and carrying it into the room where the PP projector is?
Can I assume that whatever it takes to hook up the Dells to Power Point stuff can also be hooked up to my iMac? ie shove the Dell aside and put the Mac in it's place. I know nothing about what it takes to hook up PP to a computer.
Help! Keep me "crying" a lot from all my many lost hours of work to create my presentation.
    Thanks for your help.

How to connect to VGA monitor port: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58467
    Does not look easy.
You seem to have a slot loading, CD-RW iMac from 2001 (500-700 MHz).
    Your eMac is more promising:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88428
It has a mini-VGA output port.
I'd take the eMac (get the VGA display adapter to connect) or ask around, if anyone lets you use his/her iBook or PowerBook to present. Much easier than mess with your presentation on a PC (and you know the Mac
If you manage to get the presentation right in PowerPoint on the Mac, you could burn a CD to transport the file to the PC. This usually works without any problem. (If the PC does not recognize the memory stick, it could be it runs on an old version of Windows, and needs to have USB drivers installed for the memory sticks.)
    Hope this helps
    Marc
PS: If all else fails, to mail to the other person: divide the file (part of the slides, only slides with pictures matter) into chunks that are smaller than 2MB after conversion to PP - burning a CD is much faster.

  • Connecting Mac Pro to Dell monitor

I have connected Macpro to Dell DVI monitor, the Dell will show the Mac home screen, but stays on that screen when i change to a different screen (on Mac)?

You have it set up as an extended desktop rather than mirroring. That means you can drag a window from your MBP onto that monitor. It's like an extension of the existing monitor. If you want mirroring, which shows the same on both, go to Displays in System Preferences and change it.

  • Mac Mini with Dell Monitor

I just bought my dad a Mac Mini and gave him my big Apple Monitor (can't remember size but bigger than a small TV:). Well dad says the monitor is too big and wants to use his Dell monitor. I called support and for the first time I couldn't understand the technician, his accent was too strong (I really hope Apple hasn't outsourced their support). Anyway, what I got from the conversation had something to do with a VGA adapter to a DVI? I have looked at the other topics on using non-Mac displays but they aren't really on point. Any help is appreciated:)
    Thanks
    Lisa

If the Dell monitor has a VGA connector (also referred to sometimes as 'analog'), then all he will need in order to use it with the mini is the DVI/VGA adapter that is included with the mini and therefore should be in the box. I use a Dell display with one of my minis this way and it works just fine.
If the Dell has a DVI connector (which is digital) then it will plug straight in without the adapter.
Almost all computer displays in the past 10 years and more use one or other of these connector types - most are VGA.

  • Mac on a dell

ive heard of running linux and windows on the same computer. is it possible to have os x run on a dell also. ive never heard of it being done besides on a mac running boot camp. if it can be done, ill prolly buy that os x cd and install. if anyone can help, it would be appreciated.

*"is it possible to have os x run on a dell also."*
No. Mac OS only runs on Apple hardware unless you hack the installation. Even then if you were successful you would no drivers for any of the hardware.

  • Mac Mini on Dell U2711

Hi, I try to connect my new Mac Mini 2014 to a Dell U2711. It is working fine via HDMI but how can I connect the mini to get a 2560x1600 resolution? Thanks in advance, Mike

I have a similar monitor and use one of these: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-6-Feet-DisplayPort-Adapter-Cable/dp/B002XVYZ82/
It's a minidisplayport to displayport wire. Full resolution looks good on these monitors.

  • Mac Mini with Dell 2405FPW

Can anyone advise me on how to get a Dell 2405FPW display to work with a Mac Mini? It works fine with 1600 x 1050 resolution, but I cannot up to the native 1920 x 1200 resolution without getting vertical lines across the display. I thought it may have been a refresh rate problem, but the display window is set at 60Hz and won't allow any changes. Any suggestions?

Are you connected with a DVI cable? (Don't even know if your monitor has a VGA.)
The following thread suggests that resetting the PRAM might be a fix:

BTW searching for "dell 2405fpw" in these forums finds others with this problem. And some who don't have it.

  • MAC shortcuts with DELL keyboard?

I haven't been able to do my homework because of my keyboard. Sounds lame, right?
Well my MAC wireless keyboard got something in or on it and shorted out. Ive tried to reinstall it or whateverthehell and it just doesnt work, other than like 2 keys. I found an older model Dell keyboard to temorarily replace my mac keyboard and I can't get any of the windows shortcuts to work, nor can i get any mac keyboard shortcuts to work. It's almost as if my control key, on either side, doesn't work at all.
The main reason I came to MAC support was to find out if there's any way to get my shortcuts back. It's almost excruciating to try to complete any of my Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illistrater homework without the mac keyboard shortcuts and i have yet to find someone who offers tutorials or lessons without the keyboard shortcuts. It's difficult to complete one thing when having to stop very few seconds and search the entire program for a command that i can hit a few keys for at school.
So, again, can i reinstall the shortcuts or reprogram them to be used with this keyboard, or does the Windows layout of the keyboard conflict too much with the iMAC?
Also, please don't assume that i don't know anything about anything and haven't tried the obvious. That's why it's called "the obvious". Obviously i've tried it and it doesn't work.
    Thanks much,
    Amy

Of course a wireless keyboard and mouse and trackpad will work. From what everyone is saying you may need a wired keyboard to get started. Something about Lion. I don't know. I am stuck with Snow Leopard because I have the Intel core duo. I replaced my dead wired keyboard a while back with a wreless and had no problems. If you are like me you may have a couple of old wired keyboards in the bottom of the closet. A true Geek never throws such things away.
