Mi Superdrive won't read any Audio CDs or DVD-R

Hello, i have read that many users may experience same problem as i. My Macbook Pro mid 2009 suddenly stopped reading any audio cds or dvd-r,it just reads DVD movies or programs, i wonder how can i fix this trouble.
Does my superdrive needs to be replaced?
Does anyone have found a way to get this solved?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

If you are under AppleCare, ask for them to fix it.
If you are not under AppleCare, it may just need a drive cleaning. I can't recommend any specific cleaners, but do know some work, at least as long as they meet these requirements:

  • Drive won't read ANY cd's or dvd's; only ejects them!!

Help! My Cd-Rom drive will not read any cd's or dvd's. However, it will allow blank cd's to stay in and be burned onto...sometimes.
When I put in a disc, it tries to read it and then spits it back out. I have tried all forms of cd's and dvd's (even discs with other programs) and the same thing happens. I can hear the disc spinning, and the laser moving, but the noise stops and the disc gets spit out. _Any suggestions????_

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I;m hoping it might just be a corrupt file or something... since it accepts blanks occasionally.
What are the settings in Sts Prefs>CDs/DVDs? I think I'd change the settings for a try.
If you haven't done any maintenance latly...
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup.
It'll be a god test whether it's the drive or the OS if it can or can't boot with the C key down.

  • IBook G4 Superdrive won't read any discs

Few days ago my iBook's Superdrive worked perfectly and I never had any issues. I would barely use my drive and I never used any dirty or scratched discs in order to avoid issues, anyway, today I found some burned music discs in my room and I was curious to know what songs they had, but then when I inserted the disc it just kept loading and loading until it ejected by itself, I then checked again if it was scratched and it wasn't, I tried another disc and no luck, I restarted the computer and the usual noise that the drive makes when the computer starts changed and sounds kind of rough like its forced, it did't sound like that before I inserted the CD. What could the problem be? Why would the superdrive die if I rarely used it? Also, the system profile detects the drive but the disk utility won't show the drive. Any ideas? I really don't want to change the drive.

If your SuperDrive will not mount the install disk or commercially recorded CDs it would seem the drive is not functioning well and may be on the way out. With the older tray-loading drives it was easy to access the inside of the drive and clean the laser with a alcohol towelette. With the internal drives that is more of a challenge and you not only have to remove the drive but to open it up, and even after that the issue may not necessarily be the laser.
Possible options are: a replacement SuperDrive, an external firewire drive or using Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire capable Mac.

  • MacBook Won't Read M-Audio e49

    Hey,
Just trying to plug an M-Audio Keystation e49 into my Macbook Pro (retina) and it's not reading it at all. I've tried going into Audi MIDI Setup and still nothing. It's not the keyboard or the cable as I just tried them on my iMac.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • SuperDrive won't read OS X Tiger 10.4

I had OS X Tiger, but the system crashed, so I had to erase my hard drive and reinstall the only system I had on a disc, which was 10.2.8. Now I have a store bought disc of OS X Tiger, and the SuperDrive won't read it. It just spits it out after about 30 seconds, no error code or anything. Any thoughts?

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
May I assume that you can't boot from the DVD? Restart, hold down "C".....
Try a different user account. If recognized, it is a software related problem.
Also, try a boot in safe mode, and see if the install DVD can be recognized. If recognized, it is probably third party software/driver problems.

Does your machine recognize other CD'S, or DVD's?
Do you still have burning function?
One last item- if you have access to another Mac, you might verify that the install DVD is good and recognizable on another machine.

  • Drive won't read any dvd ejects it automatically

My drive Won't read any kind of DVDs, it keeps ejecting automatically after spinning for a while. it's been going on for a while now. please help!!!!!

You can try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air. It's likely though that your drive has failed, it' not all that uncommon. It that is the case you can either replace it or have it replaced but it's far cheaper just to buy a usb external drive....just not Apples because it won't work with macs with a built in drive working or not. .

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

  • Superdrive won't read dvds, but will read cds?!?

My son was watching a dvd and the player quit. Then, it wouldn't read any dvd. But, it will read audio cds. I have no clue.

It sounds like the DVD drive heads have gone out of position and the drive needs to be replaced. Contact your dealer or Apple.

  • CD/DVD drive won't read any CDs or DVDs

Whenever I insert a DVD, CD, or CD-ROM my computer won't read the disc. The computer starts making noise like it is reading the disc but then it stops. It tries 3 times (starts and stops) and then just spits the disc out. I can't watch movies, install software, etc. How do I fix this.

Before taking it or sending it anywhere I'd first try resetting PRAM…

Dunno why, but I think this has something to do with the Security Update 2009-001 Apple posted on its download platform a few days ago. Must have wrecked my SuperDrive somehow--and maybe yours, too--and I agree with Ryan when he says Apple hasn't been up to its reputation, lately. Maybe the market pressure got too much, and they started buying cheaper components...
Makes me wonder; imagine, you buy the brand new MacBook/MacBook Pro, with its encased battery and other fancy stuff, and something breaks down in the beast's belly. What do you do, then, bring it back to that some so-called Genius tells you to send it in to AppleCare.
    Naughty, naughty, Apple...

  • SuperDrive won't read anything

    Hi,
I have a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and out of nowhere the SuperDrive suddenly won't read anything. I put in a CD or DVD and it'll make a short whirring sound about every 4-5 seconds and then after the third time it automatically ejects the disc. Is my drive dead? The computer is still covered under my AppleCare protection plan. Do I need to just bring it in and have it replaced?
Any information I can get here would be great so i don't have to call up Apple support and wait half an hour for someone to tell me there's nothing they can do, and I have to bring it in.
    Thanks.

Hi. If AppleCare cannot fix the drive 'by phone'... they can send you a replacement drive to install yourself under the D-I-Y clause, para. 1.c.iv here

  • MBP superdrive does not accept commercial audio cds

    Hi people,
My superdrive mostly does not accept commercial audio cds when i keep on trying it accepts them sometimes but you cannot say under which circumstances.
I already tried to resolve this with a "reset -all" in the single user mode but this just lead to acceptance of the first inserted audio cd afterwards it was problematic again to load audio cds.
Does anybody know something that helps to make the drive reliably accept all cds of this kind?
    THANKS

Yep, to me this is an issue with your optical drive.
Contact Apple (in the USA call 800-275-2273 for other locations check [this list|http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html]) or carry it in to an Apple retail store for repairs. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first or you may wait a long time to talk to a Mac Genius. Tell them what has been done and get it repaired.
    Best of luck.

  • My Final Cut Express 2 won't import any audio or export anything

My Final Cut Express 2 won't import mp4s or any audio or export anything. I have been using compressor only. I have recently just changed to Tiger 10.4.11

Final Cut Express does not work with MP4s.  You need to convert the MP4 video to QuickTime DV or QuickTime Apple Intermediate Codec before importing it into FCE.  Which one to use depends on the properties of the MP4 video you have ... basically, if it's standard def 4:3 then convert to QuickTime DV (NTSC if you are in North America, PAL if you are in Eurpope) ... high def 16:9 should be converted to QuickTime Apple Intermediate Codec.
In most cases you can use MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion.
As for audio files, they need to be AIFF, 16-bit (aka 48KHz), stereo.   If they are not AIFF format you need to convert them ... you can use iTunes or almost any audio editing software to convert audio files.

  • Can't read ANY audio cd

Couple of weeks ago my laptop battery died, literally, when I was listening an audio cd. The drive made an unhealthy noise and stopped. After connecting to AC, Arch was fine but no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to read an audio cd. None of the media players recognized it. It seemed as if the drive was empty. Data cd's etc. work just fine. Audio cd's also work fine in Windows.
I've searched Google, this forum, other forums, asked on IRC etc. Nobody seems to have an idea. Any ideas?

    dcc24 wrote:
Yeah, I still have the problem. It seems to be limited to audio cd's.
I've just successfully burned a cd and I can open it on a different system. I don't think it's a hardware issue though, since I can read audio cd's in Windows.
Whoops, I should have read your first post more carefully!
    Three basic suggestions:
Make sure you are in the group audio - gpasswd -a user audio - as root. I know, you've already added yourself to audio, but I experienced a self-imposed system crash and found that afterwards my permissions were all screwed up, and they seemed to be a little 'flaky' afterwards. Didn't work? Move to suggestion 2:
Open whatever media player you are using with a terminal. Try using an audio cd. Make sure the media player is directing to cdda. Check for any errors in the output. No? Suggestion 3:
Completely remove the media players you have used, including the configuration files that pacman won't delete. Re-install a media player you are sure worked before. Does it work? If yes, it was simply the result of a config file that was corrupted with the power loss.
    Still not working? Then:
You said the media players were acting as if the 'drive was empty'. Do you mean that in the sense that they are not even detecting the cd, that they are giving you an error that when you try and use an audio cd, or in the sense that they are 'playing' the cd, but there is no output?
