Mic Placement/Sound Proofing The Mic Area

Hey guys,im having trouble with my vocals getting lost in the mix of my songs..i think one reason is that my mic (U87) has no sort of sound proofing around it..i usually sit the mic in a corner of the room and record vocals just like that..but now im wondering should i sound proof that area and maybe i would get a better vocal sound..im running my mic into the Focurite Trackmaster Pro,out of that into my M-Box..levels are pretty good before i record so i dont think its a level problem. i always fing my self playing(fader fighter) when im mixing..i cut the vocal up now the snare sounds to low,i cut the snare up now the vocal sounds to low..help please!!

Unless you're noticing some odd ambience being recorded with the vocal then I'm not sure sound "treatment" will be the thing you need.
(Sound proofing is to stop leakage of sound in or out of the room, treatment is aligning the sound within the room.)
Sounds more like you need to look at the way you're mixing, and/or recording the vocal. If you're having problems with the vocal taking away from the snare and vice versa, then maybe look at the way you treat the two sounds, try making them fit into more different frequency ranges to separate them more. Or try treating them with different ambiences. They're such different instruments I don't quite see how they should cause a problem in the mix. I can't say I've ever thought "man that snare gets in the way of the vocal." that's like saying, "turn the hi hat down it's ruining the bass part."
Think about how you're equing the vox/snare and how you are compressing them if at all, as well.
Also maybe try monitoring differently try listening to your mix in the car or at a friends to compare how it sounds in different places.
You will have to automate the levels of the vocal unless it's VERY consistently performed thats just the nature of a human voice.

  • Is it normal for the Panels to make slight noises when applied with some pressure such as opening the and closing the Mac? It sounds like the screws are not tight enough or is it normal?

Hi, My Mac is around 2 months old, and I have recently come across a slight problem. I've experienced some slight noises happening such as when I open and close the macbook it makes some sort of clicking noises as if to say the panels are loose or have not been screwed properly... It only happens when pressure is applied e.g. when I am typing I tend to rest the palms of my hand on the two plain sections of the mac (next to the track pad) and this causes some sort of pressure to push down to the connecting panel underneath, this is when the clicking sound happens.
I don't know maybe I'm just expecting too much or it might just be what I think it is, anyway if anyone has experience this issue, feel free to share your point of views or past similar experience. Thanks.

Yes.. It's been a while, but I remember thinking the same thing!

  • No sound unless the earphones are plugged in

After using my iphone 4s with earphones the other day i no longer have any sound with out the earphones. when you press the side + and - nothing happens

    Hey there alambert6629,
It sounds like you are not getting sound from the speaker on your phone after having used the headphones with it last time. I would try these steps from the following article named:
iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5180
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

  • Why don't the speakers in my iPad work? It works with the headphones but i get no sound when the headphones are unplugged

The speakers do not work on the I pad2 even when I have reset it numerous times, and the headphones are unplugged?

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound. Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and its the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • I have a Macbook Pro early 2011 running 10.7.5, does anyone know why it sounds like the fans are spinning really fast and loud. It's not like I'm using many applications at one time. Thank you.

Trying to see why the fans are spinning real loud and fast. I dont have a nearby Apple store to take it to and Bestbuy wants to overcharge you for a bunch of uncertified geek squad employees working on them. Any help? Thanks in advance.

  • I have an iPhone 4, and when I plug any headphones in, including the new apple ones, they just sound like the speakers are blown, but when I pull the jack out a little bit they sound fine?

I don't know what to do, considering I just bought these headphones and it's the phone which will not let them play. Any help?

Could be a contact problem. There are certain places inside the headset port where proper contact is needed for the various functions the Apple headset has, for example the Remote/microphone unit that cheaper headphones don't have.
You should have your phone checked by an Authorized Apple Service provider or by visiting an Apple Store next to your place.

  • Faint click/tick sounds near the trackpad area

Hi, I have a week old Macbook Pro i5. It makes light click/tick sort of noises somewhere around the trackpad/keyboard area. I am not able to figure out where and when exactly the sound comes from. It is similar to a sound that would be created when you gently tap on a glass door with a metal piece. It is sort of random and doesn't seem like hard drive noises. Although the sound is not that annoying, I am little bit concerned that it might exacerbate in future. Anyone else noticed a similar issue?

There are actually 2 of those brackets by the way. I believe if you just open up the bottom lid then just apply it back on by hand, it would keep any moving parts from rubbing. When I first opened it, I noticed there was a mark on the inside of the bottom lid made by the one of the fan. Which allows to me to believe that Apple assembled that MBPs too tight. Therefore, causing some parts to rub. I can't be 100% sure what is making the clicking sounds, those little brackets things does make sense but I"m still not too sure. However, I do know that as soon as I removed the lid, I notice the sound is gone when I apply pressure or move the machine. I would say this isn't too much of a concern as far as for the health of the machine but it is a bit annoying.

    Please help!

    Hi there coyfish28
There are a couple of things that we may want to try. The first is resetting all of the settings on the device. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. If your issues persist beyond that then I would recommend taking a look the troubleshooting steps listed in the article below.

    Hope that helps,

  • Warbled sound using the built in mic on a Macbook Pro

    Hello all,
I just got Logic 8 and I'm still in the testing/experiment stages. Right now I'm simply recording my voice, through the *built in mic*, on my Macbook Pro. I'm recording at 192k, 24 bit to test out the sample rate differences and quality of sound. In my audio settings, on my macbook pro, I noticed that it only goes up to 96k. I'm getting audio overload messages, in Logic, and it sounds to me there is a slight "warbled" sound in the recording. Very much like the way a cheap mp3 sounds, underwatery/warbled/cheap. It's subtle but I can detect it.
Is this because the I'm using the internal mic?
Do I need to match my audio settings, on my computer, to Logic's sample rate settings?
Is that why I'm getting audio overload warnings and the distortion?
    Any input will help.
    Thanx in advance
    TTW

The built in mic in your MBP probably costs a dime. It's completely useless for recording except maybe as a quick sketchpad for remembering a melody. They put it in for Skype/iChat purposes, not for professional recording. A more or less decent microphone is at least $100, plus you'll need a proper interface with a mike preamp to connect it to your Mac. Even then, the chances that you'll hear a discernable difference between 44.1 kHz/96/192 are slight.
