Mic Pops

Hi,
I took a recording of a live music perfomance, originally recorded on DAT and downloaded onto logic. It's a very good recording, but there are some microphone pops where the singer is accentuating his 'Ps'. Does anyone have any neat tricks that would help to reduce or eliminate these pops from the recording? It could be really helpful.
Thanks,
terry

Hi Terry,
One other suggestion I'll add in tandem with Yoink's, is by automating a low cut filter.
Keep in mind, if it is a stereo recording, you're way more limited than if you had the vocal track separated.
Because you said you took it from a DAT, which is a stereo recording device, I'll assume that this is indeed the case.
Try automating a low cut filter. leave the filter set so that all frequencies come through. Then in automation, move the filter's slider up to a range where the low end is diminished. This will take the "Plosive" out of the vocal. usually somewhere around, or above 200 to 250 Hz will do the trick. I would highly suggest doing these automation moves with your mouse, with automation view enabled, so you can get it very precise.
Keep in mind though, that the whole track will suffer from this filtering, so by using automation, you can really hone in on it only triggering on that millisecond or so that the plosive happened, and hope that it goes by so quickly, that it's not noticed in the overall sound.
I recommend automating the filter frequency itself, over simply bypassing the plug-in with automation, because bypassing that type of plug-in, with the filter engaged, will cause "pops" when turned on and off. Surgical automation of the filter frequency level, will eliminate that.

  • Pop will not remove

I have recorded a sermon at my local church, for broadcast onto radio. The pastor has a lapel mic, and I have run the clicks/pop filter and fixed the errors that STP finds. However, there are still some pops, that I cannot remove. A few of these I could remove by simply deleting a bit of the waveform, but others are integrated into a bit of voice i.e. the 'Ca' sound at the beginning of the word can.
Any help in which filters to use, to remove these pops, and preserve the voice.
We have been given some free radio airtime, if we can submit a decent sample CD. Any help with removing these pops, would be most appreciated.

Simon, with the toughies like old records, or mic pops that seem as though nothing can remove them there's a few tricks.
First get the particular pop isolated by zooming in all the way and find the exact ins and out points within it [or if it's larger than your screen try selecting points within the pop]. Then cut the section in half and highlight back from the first half/beyond the second half.
Do this in repeated steps: first the piece before and within the first half; then the second half and beyond [or potentially just pieces of the entire pop].
If necessary go down to quarters of the original section and work it out until the process actually moves the original pop at least somewhat, then you're good to try and remove the whole pop again.
If all else fails you can probably find the exact point of the pop after the above steps and manually draw it out with the pencil and/or delete a few milleseconds as you said you've done.
    Good Luck

  • Please help with glitch in AA3.01 on 64bit Win 7 Pro/ M audio 192?

This is very frustrating and it happens irregularly but repeatedly.  When recording, I sometimes get a very quick click or snap which is invisible on the waveform but can be seen in spectral view as a thin line running from top to bottom.  It can be edited out, but really slows down a production!
This sound is not caused by me.  It is far different from a mic 'pop.'   Yes, I use a blast shield, and am about a foot from the mic.   I might record 10 minutes and never hear it, or I might record ten minutes and hear it multiple times (maybe 6 to 10 times?)  Interestingly, I have never seen or heard it when recording silence,
    I have a new PC with WIn 7 Pro 64 bit  I have 9GB ram, 2 x 1TB drives. Gigabyte GA-X-58A-UD 3R motherboard.
My card is an M audio audiophile 192.  There don't appear to be new drivers beyond what I have loaded.  In fact, when I load the latest driver, although it apparently loads, it does not show as such in the M Audio driver window. 5 10 0 5074 is shown, even though the driver 'says' it loaded  the new one successfully.
Any and all advice is welcome.  This is driving me crazy and maybe away from Audition but I love the program and don't want to replace it!  Thanks!

    Thank you for your advice!
I use twin soundcards - one for professional audio - the other for Skype.  I
have tried moving the buffer to 4096, if I recall, but it didn't help.
Latency doesn't matter to me as I record sans headphones.
I can't really shut down everything on the computer since I must have access
to email and antivirus for email while I am recording.  My processor is an
    i7 and I don't think there's any overclocking going on.  I can't remember
what the dialog was on the M Audio driver, but I seem to recall something
    about several items being updated...
Would I be better off trying to emulate a 32 bit computer within the 64 bit
environment, or does that only turn everything down to 32 bit, not just AA3?
Another odd thing is I sometimes hear this glitch on playback where it IS
NOT recorded...  which I determine by playing back the audio in question
several times.  If not recorded, it'll glitch at a point, then on replay,
not.  When recorded, it's there in the spectral view, and each must be
edited out.  It's very annoying and time consuming.
Any other ideas are welcome.  I am uncomfortable with messing with the Bios
since I am not THAT technical.

  • Using the declicker effect in CS4

I'm trying to use this effect(tried the decrackler also), but nothing seems to be happening.
I insert the effect into the  timeline, make some knob adjustments, render the workspace and nothing shows up in the input nor output windows under custom setup.
i would assume since I have some distinct mic. pops/clicks that it would see at least something.
Is the bypass keyframe, just that?  bypasses the effect inbetween keyframes?
i don't have the money for Audition or another program right now and was hoping to get by with this for now.
    Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Flip Over does not have any alpha (transparancy) use Basic 3D instead.

  • Clipping vs. Quiet: Can anybody help?

Problem: I have the volume of my computer turned up to the maximum capacity, but my Garage band song is still low- especially in comparison to songs from other artist in my itunes list.
Background: I downloaded a free mp3. The mp3 is a hip hop beat. I have an AkG mic; pop filter; Tascom US-144 interface. I recorded my verses and chorus'. I adjusted the master track to prevent the clipping that was occurring. I allowed the recorded tracks to clip since I wasn't hearing the crackling sound--I only hear the crackling if the master volume meter showed clipping. With the audio levels reduced in order to correct for the clipping, the song is not loud enough--even when the computer is turned all the way up. Mind you, this is a hip hop song.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Hangtime. I gather from your site that its an issue of my technique-or lack thereof-with regard to mixing. I guess I would like to know if anyone has any settings that work for them that may be worth trying? I'm creating a hip hop song. I would like for it to be louder, and yet avoid the clipping issues.

  • Audio targeting in Multi Camera edits Premiere 5.5

I am editing 6 days worth of a 3 camera multi camera set up from a seminar I shot last month. I am using Premiere Pro 5.5.
I shot the class with the speaker mic'ed with 2 wireless lapel mics: one mic going into Cam 3 left channel, and one going into Cam 2 right channel; the open channel on both catching ambient audio via camera mics. The thought here was I would have some redundancy in the event one mic popped out due to battery issues, or interference, and still have an audio channel to sync to with PluralEyes.
Camera 1 was a wide shot of the front of room, and had 4 choir mics directed at the audience (to pick up questions and such) and one shotgun focusing on the front where the speaker stood (again, for redundancy) running into a mixer, and then into Cam 1 right and left channels.
In Premiere, I line up all the video shots with PluralEyes (or manually) and then nest that sequence into a new multi cam sequence and begin editing.
When nesting the video and audio into a new sequence and turning multicamera editing on, I get the one track of nested video, and the one track of audio.
My issue is how to get the cleaner audio of the instructor, which is on either CAM 2 or 3 (with the lapel mics), onto the track of CAM 1, which is the only track I am able to hear when doing multi cam edits. If I simply copy the instructor audio onto track 1 in the 'source' sequence,  I lose the audience replies and sound. But I don't know how to mix other channels onto the main track of the parent sequence (source).
I have worked around this by copying the audio from track 2 or 3 onto track 1 in the original (not nested) sequence and that has worked and I could keep on editing. But now, I need to do a group discussion portion, and need the audio from track 1 as well as the others and I am not sure how to mix them into the main audio track that the multicam process requires.
I hope I am clear in my explanation. In essence, how do you get a mix of tracks to show up onto track 1, the only audio track that seems to be able to be read by the multicam feature in Premiere 5.5?
    Many thanks!!
    Mark

Since I didn't want to ask a stupid question, I have been trying to do what
you suggested below, but I am not meeting with success (which means I am
    doing it wrong :o)
I have made my edits in the multi Camera sequence I created and used the
Multi Cam "enabled" setting (labeled this sequence "Multi"), and then
placed the original multiple camera and tracks sequence (labeled
'source' which was first lined up and synced) into the video 2 track in the
    multi cam sequence.
So now I have 2 tracks of the original "Source" sequence in the "multi"
sequence: one cut into shots and one uncut from the original sequence.
But, only the audio is coming in from the first track, even though the
tracks are all activated in the original sequence (nothing muted).
I know I am close, but not sure what I am doing wrong, and the audio from
the tracks is important for the final product.
    Thanks again!

  • Pop port that supports a mic

Does anybody know if there is a pop port that supports a mic like the shure mpa? http://www.amazon.co.uk/SHURE-MPA-Adapter-for-iPhone/dp/B000UD205K

you can use single job server for exectuing jobs and managing Adapter communication, the same job server will be executing the jobs and handling communication to and from Adapter
you don't need a dedicated Access Server for JMS, you can use the same Access Server

  • Pop / Click Sound when mic plugged into iPad

Is anyone else having an issue with a faint 'pop' heard when using a mic to record audio into the ipad through the headphone jack?
I've tried using the iPhone earbuds w/ built-in mic and 3 different iRig Mics at the local music store - each time, the same result.
When I am using any audio recording program that accepts the mic input (Garageband, free iRig recorder, Vocalive, etc.) I hear a faint 'pop' every 20 seconds or so. It is pretty quiet compared to the audio input, but is loud enough to be heard when trying to record good quality audio.
At first I thought it was an issue with the iRig Mic but after testing with the iPhone earbuds/mic, it appears that the issue pops up whenever there is an input device plugged into the headphone jack.
Can anyone confirm or provide a suggestion for how to remedy this problem?
    Cheers. Dale

    Anyone?
I've confirmed a slight regular 'pop' or 'click' on my iPad2 every 20 secs or so whenever an input is used in the headphone jack. Can hear it when turned up high. Shouldnt be a processing power issue because I can replicate even in the simplest of recording programs without an additional processing.
Confirmed with iPhone earbuds w/ mic, with ampkit guitar interface and irig imic (x3 different ones at the store).
Frustrated because this negates using my ipad for recording purposes

  • SoundBlaster PCI 128 Crackling/Popping, Mic Wont Work Now Eith

Hello everyone, im kinda a noobie here so give me some leeway, gonna take a shot at this.
Okay, so yesterday i felt like messing around with my graphics card which led to...problems of course.
Anyway, i had to uninstall Windows XP SP and SP2, which were both on my system, i reinstalled SP2, but noticed my mic would now make large pops and crackles, and i could BARELY be heard on ventrilo. My speakers were also the same way. So, i uninstalled SP2 and put SP back in hoping something would fix itself. Still didnt work. Not sure what i messed up, but everything was perfect beforehand, there were absolutely no pops or crackles in my mic or my speakers, everything was fine. Anyone know what i can do to get back on track again?, Im going to install SP2 over SP like before tonight, but anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks alot!

Bump. Can anyone give me suggestions?

  • Audio popping from mic tap

so i've got a 1 to 2 frame pop coming from the speaker, "accidentally" tapping his lav throughout his speech. is there something i can do? i tried just removing the two frame sections, but i get the same effect only in the opposite direction, i.e. a noticeable "non" sound. any thoughts?

You can use something like an inverted noise gate to limit sudden sharp noises as well as using an equalizer to limit the sound cut off to certain frequencies.
I haven't used Soundtrack Pro much, and don't know what it has available in it for noise reduction. I use Soundsoap Pro as a plugin inside of Peak when I need something like this. What I'd do in that program is isolate one of the thumps, have SSP learn the sound as 'noise' then have it remove just the 'noise'. The problem is, this approach will remove the background music at the same time.
Since you are cutting up the entire clip, how were you intending to deal with the discontinuity in the background sound track? Perhaps in solving that issue you can invent something to fill the quiet space?
    Good luck.

  • Mic feedback/popping with duet

hi. as you've guessed, i'm getting extreme feedback from my microphone and am hoping someone can help me.
i'm not the most advanced audio man in the world, so bear with me here....
i recently bought an AKG condenser microphone and have plugged it into IN-1 in Duet. i've enabled Phantom Power (the 48v box, right?) and am able to record. But whenever I do so, there's extreme feedback that sounds like popping or firewood crackling. I've toyed with the individual volumes of input 1 and so forth in the Duet mixer, but still nothing.
can anyone walk me through this?
    thank you?

the feedback is coming through the speakers......so, for example, when i record an audio track i not only hear the feedback while i'm recording but it appears on the recorded audio track as well.

  • How do I turn off the feature in iTunes that automatically starts up iTunes when I press the mic button on my headphones?

Okay, so I guess the mic button in my headphones is broken and so it acts like I have pressed it even though I have not. So everytime I have my head phones plugged in itunes shows up and everytime I try close out or pause iTunes, it just starts right back up again and I have to do this constantly. My temporary solution was to just turn my iTunes volume all the way down but it still pops up with notifications that says a song is playing. It is gettin annoying because I cannot watch Netflix or anything else without getting itunes pop ups.  I was just wondering if there was any way to disable the feature?

The mic button is probably sending a signal (or command) that works like a keyboard shortcut to open the app.
System Preferences>Keyboard - under the Shortcuts tab, clear ANY iTunes shortcuts that appear in the list.
