Mic volume, ALSA and X-Fi issue

This is probably a driver issue but I wanted to check if anyone here has found a solution/workaround.
I have a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card and it works quite well now with Alsa using the (still) recently released ctxfi driver from the AUR (on x86_64, if that makes any difference). I bought a really cheap analogue microphone a week ago just to have one around (apart from the mic of an old broken headset). When I connect it to the card and turn up the mic volume on the capture panel of alsamixer, I can hear everything through it very clearly while the control is still in the green zone. If I push it up all the way, the input is very loud and I get a lot of background noise.
The problem is that in Audacity and when using arecord, the capture volume is really low (just a whisper) (Yeah, I've selected "capture" on the mic control in alsamixer). I can get better sound if I turn up everything in alsamixer, but then I have the sound blasting in my ears while recording. From what I can tell, input and output channels are "linked" with this driver. Normally you would have one control for mic recording volume and another one for mic playback volume so that you can boost the input only. If I go to the "all" panel in alsamixer, it shows a master out and a master in slider, but adjusting one adjusts the other, etc.
Is there any workaround to this? Does anyone know what's going on with ALSA? Their site still says that they've only received the card specifications. It doesn't even mention that the drivers have finally been open-sourced.
If anyone is using OSS with an X-Fi card, do you have this issue as well? Has OSS already incorporated the open-sourced drivers?

  • Logic Mics, Aggregate Devices and The Input Issue

There is a lot of discussion about Logic's inability to accept simple microphone inputs, and I ran into this for two frustrating DAYS of trying all the things in the Logic Express 8 Docs to fix it—to no avail.
But now it is solved, so I'm trying to create a DEFINITIVE list of steps and principles here so others may quickly blast past this issue.
The equipment I have seems to be emblematic to the problem. The Blue Snowball is one of those USB mics that simply doesn't automatically show up in Logic's Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device list. The fix for this is never mentioned in the Logic manual or Getting Started docs that I can find. There is a passing reference on page 100 that is virtually zero help, and does not bother to mention how this Prime Gotcha can bring you to your knees.
Principle #1: Logic uses the Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device (list) process to identify which microphone you can record with. The list has to have in it an entry that makes sense for both the incoming audio and the playback path that Logic uses to feed earphones or an external monitor.
Normal items on that list look like this:
    Built-in Output/Line Input
    Built-in Output/Digital Input
    Built-in Line Output/Input
    Built-in Line Output/Digital Input
    Built-in Digital Output/Line Input
    Built-in Digital Output/Input
The Built-in Output is the computer’s inner speaker or headphones. The Built-in Line Output is the computers stereo jack for feeding to an amplifier. The Built-in Digital Output is the fiber optic feed that can also feed an amp with up to six parallel audio channels (okay, 5.1 channels).
Nothing on that list will show a fully functional USB microphone that is being viewed on the computer’s System Prefs > Sound > Input page, even though the metering dots there show that the computer sees a live, active microphone.
Selecting the Mic in the Sound prefs page does nothing to pass it on to the Logic > Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device list of selectable items. This is frustrating, since GarageBand sees the live mic without any problem, but GB is a simpler program that has fewer options while Logic has many other potentials, so a one-size-fits-all solution may not be its best default setting.
To get the mic into Logic, you have to go into the Audio MIDI Setup utility program where a peculiar option appears that is called “Aggregate Device”.
This keyword is not found in the Mac docs, and understanding it seems to be a big secret. Even the Audio MIDI Setup help page will show you how to find it, but not how it works or how to use it for Logic. Ahem.
You open Audio MIDI Setup and under its header bar Audio is only one item, sure enough, Open Aggregate Device Editor. That opens a window that has two sections, an upper window with Aggregate Devices / In / Out across its top, and a lower window that shows all the options that the computer is aware of. The lower window is called “Structure:” and columns show Clock / Use / Audio Device / In / Out / Resample.
A default item “Aggregate Device” shows in the top panel, and you can add others and double click on one to change its name. You can make many variations here.
By default these will be present:
    Built-in Line Input
    Built-in Digital Input
    Built-in Output
    Built-in Line Output
    Built in Digital Output
At the bottom of this list any other audio input devices that are plugged into the computer should show up. If they can be seen in the System Prefs > Sound > Input page, they’ll be here, too.
When I plug my Blue Snowball USB mic into the computer, it shows up here as Blue Snowball.
You create an Aggregate Device by clicking on your sound source, in my case, the Blue Snowball, then adding one or more other options.
When you click the Use check box for any entry, it pops to the top of the list.
Principle #2: An Aggregate Device is used by Logic to “see” both an audio input and an audio output path at the same time. The Device you’re creating at this point must include an input Audio Device AND at least one Output item to be fully functional for Logic. A Help page in Audio MIDI Devices called “Combining multiple audio devices” explains this in bare bones, but you can’t see that help page unless the Audio MIDI Devices utility is open.
In my case, I’ve checked the Blue Snowball and Built-In Line Output, so I can use that combo in Logic to define where the mic is coming from and where the Logic audio output should go to my line-input amp and speakers.
In the Audio MIDI Setup utility, simply selecting the Blue Snowball as the “Default Input:” device and/or the “Properties For:” options shows that the Audio Output area of the page has this cryptic message: “Output is not supported.”
At this point, you’re almost ready to go, and you can close the Audio MIDI Setup utility. But there is at least one more “gotcha” to conquer.
Principle #3: Logic ONLY looks for its list of usable Core Audio Devices when it starts up. If you have it open right now, all the choices made for Aggregate Device will not show up as selectable. Save any work in Logic, shut it down, then boot it up again.
Now you can use Logic's Preferences > Devices > Core Audio >Device list to see your Aggregate Device. I’ve named mine “Snowy Line Out” to trigger my recognition of what it contains. Another one is called “Snowball + Line + Digital” and it has both line and digital outputs aggregated to the Snowball mic input.
You can make one in the Aggregate Device Editor that combines a microphone plus earphones (Built-in Output) plus Line and/or Digital Outs, too. You'll have to switch among them in Logic as you work, but each will carry the live mic direct to recording.
I hope this gets you through the frustration of not knowing what to do when confronted with the lack of clear docs and complete steps to get a USB mic or other seemingly opaque input issue. Feel free to add to this so others in my former state of bewilderment can gain understandings.
If Steve Jobs were to encounter the level of opacity, ambiguousness and frustration that setting up a simple USB microphone can create in Logic, you can bet that the several programs and their intimate interdependency would be either automated or fully explained in the documentations that followed his fiery analysis of the issue.

I don't know of another way to get the Blue Snowball USB mic to show up in Logic. If you can do it without having to go through the Aggregate Device route, feel free to post here how to get that to happen.
I didn't have a different mic available when I started trying to do what seemed to be the simplest of things -- record and play back an audio track -- and nothing else seemed to work.
There are a lot of Aggregate Device threads around here, many associated with Blue Snowball, Blue Snowflake and other things, but none of them laid out the principles of how Aggregate Device Setup needs to work or what to do to force it into compliance.
As I said, the clues in the Logic docs and in-mac docs are minimalist, at best, none of them bringing instant head slaps of success readily.

  • Alsa and pulse audio issue

    I am having 2 problems.
    Teamspeak 3 Mic doesn't work
    Pianobar no audio.
I have a default alsa audio error for pianobar and ts3 no idea, how can I narrow down why these do not work as they should?

My sound works fine, but apps are choosing pulse and alsa, I need to get a default sound, I got confused since the config files are not where the wiki says and thought I should ask for help.
I think I need to make pulse default, just no idea how to do that and the config files seem to be missing.
edited /etc/libao.conf changed it to pulse and removed dev=default, pianobar works on my other laptop, now i have to reboot and see if it works with teamspeak and pianobar on this laptop.
with some more google searching my sound card and alsa, i found a fix for my microphone too.
i have a dell inspiron 1545 with idt audio.
things that i followed to fix my problem,
pianobar in arch wiki, but found you only need to remove dev=default and the sound works fine, and a post in the ubuntu forums since the sound card was the same the solution worked.

    options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
    options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 enable=yes
    save and close
also i was wondering if anyone knew how to redirect pcm audio directly to pulse, for one of my games medal of honor allied assault, i have to modprobe snd-pcm-oss for sound when i log in and would like to have it run through pulse so maybe the sound would be better, the openal.so that came with the loki beta3 installer is locked to the game so using the openal from arch official doesn't work, go the sound working on this with.
    installed:
    mlocate
    alsa-oss
lame (mp3 decoder probably not needed)
    ran:
    sudo updatedb
and i have gnome-session-properties set to run:
    sudo modprobe snd-pcm-oss
if that fails i have alsa-oss installed so running it like so works
    aoss ./mohaa
    to enable the sound currently.
yes i know it is old, yes i know the project is dead and not updates, thats why i am working on solutions! lol

  • Auto-Adjust disabled; mic volume still adjusts.

I have the volume auto-adjust turned off on Skype. Yet the mic volume still automatically adjusts in skype. I often run two instances of Skype. On both accounts, I have the Volume Auto-Adjust option disabled. I have even gone into my computer's hardware settings, and disabled the setting that allows applications to take exclusive control of the microphones I use. Whether the mic is built-in, or USB, Skype still automatically adjusts its volume. I've tried three different microphones and it automatically adjusts all of them. I use Windows 7, 64. Skype is up to date. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Razer Megalodon.  I have used it for a couple years just fine with Ventrilo, Mumble, Raid Call, Teamspeak 1 & 2, others, AND Skype.  No problems, until my most recent re-install of Skype.  I had Skype uninstalled for several months because i wasn't playing the game(s) that my online friends used Skype as a Voice Client.  I recently started playing again, and reinstalled Skype (latest Installer).  Now it seems my Microphone Level in the System Sound Options panel (Open Sound Devices> Recording> Microphone Properties> Level) gets auto-managed regardless of the settings in Skype.  This is brand new behavior on my system and only happened after installing Skype.  It seems to lower the Mic Level in my system even when Skype is closed (R-Click skype in Notification Area> Quit... Then I check Task Manager for Skype in Processes and in Services> End Task/Process Tree if still running).  Every time i try to check the way it works in my other voice clients and in the "Microphone Setup Wizard" in windows, the Auto-Leveling behavior is there, even when disabled/turned off in ALL other Microphone using programs including Windows.  When i Adjust Skype's Microphone Level from Max to 75%, i can watch the System's Microphone Level drop to 0.  When i move the Skype Microphone Level to 0, then move the System Microphone Level to 2 (yes two) it jumps Skype's Microphone Level to Max. Yes, i have disabled any and all "Application Control / Exclusive Mode" options in Windows and all my Voice Clients including Skype.  With a little digging, anyone reding this can find that there are settings on the Headset as well... again, i have been using this headset for years without issue, i know how to set it up.  As you can imagine, it makes my voice either too soft/muffled to hear, or overpowering with reverb/echo/feedback.  As mentioned before, this is NEW behavior since the latest re-install of Skype, and it is affecting my entire system and other Voice Clients now, wheather Skype is running or not.  I hope this behavior is not intended by design.  I understand the need for Auto-Leveling for those who can't be arsed to learn how their PC works beyond the "Push the Power Button Crowd," however to force those who know how to use a PC (built mine from scratch) and manage their settings properly to use this Auto-Leveling by making it "Always On" is no less than insulting.  Please, Please!, tell me this is an accidental side effect and not another intentional "Dumbing Down" tactic by MS.

  • No sound with alsa and integrated Intel sound card, any advice???

I just got a new computer, erased the OEM windows install and installed Arch linux with xfce. I have an Integrated HDA intel sound card with Realtek ALC888 chip
Sound worked just fine in the windows install, so I know the card and speakers work.
I installed alsa and made sure to unmute PCM and Front speakers. Unmuting all of the entries didn't help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am going through the wikiarticl on alsa as well, but if anyone can point out what the issue is hear I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmm. I have an onboard Intel sound chipset as well.. I noticed your rc.conf doesn't have "snd-hda-intel" in the MODULES array; make sure you add that.
I never figured out how to read the right side of lsmod's output, so I'll assume that, despite having the snd-hda-intel module, you haven't enabled it yet. Try (as root or through sudo) `modprobe snd-hda-intel`. It may need underscores instead of hyphens; they seem to be interchangeable.

  • Low mic volume today, was fine yesterday

I have an alienware laptop that I had just recieved for Christmas. Friends and I have been playing games while talking via Skype for a few weeks, and everything has been fine.
Today, when we went to play, my three friends told me that my mic volume was incredibly low. I checked all my settings, everything is maxed as far as I can tell, and absolutely nothing was changed in between the last time we played and now. (I literally turned my laptop off the last time we played, and powered it back on to this issue)
    I can answer any questions.

i am suddenly having this problem as well.
i have tried trouble shooting this problem many ways but it never quite works. i will list what i have done so far.
    1) tested with another mic. same effect
    2) maxed the mic volume in the skype settings
    3) tested with another audio recording software. mic still works great
    4) tried resetting everything i could think that would help (computer, skype, skype settings)
    5) when i tried resetting skype settings by going into appdata and changing the skype file into Old_Skype forcing skype to reload its settings, it would appear to work wonderfully when i started up the software. it would walk me through the setup settings and the bar that shows mic volume was going up to my voice as it normally does. then after setup and i get into a test call, my mic is back to sounding incredebly quiet.
    6) i went into sound setting and tried many combinations concerning mic boost which was already up, tried disableing software setting override, tried disableing all sound effects. all still nothing.
i am using a turtle beach x12 but that shouldent be the problem because a logitech i have is having the same problem. i am running on windows 8.1 i have tried skype calls with friends they all say my mic is very quiet. much much quieter than normal, even when yelling into the mic. if i think of anything else you may need or if you ask for it i will add to the post.
    thank you all
Edit: after more testing i may have discovered the problem. skype is only detecting my onboard mic and is trying to use that (im using a laptop). how can i get skype to detect my turtle beach headset? other programs seem to just fine
Edit 2: disreguard the first edit. when speaking into the mic in a way that the on bord mic wouldn't be able to pick up, skype got the sound i was sending into my headset mic. still quietly but somewhat louder because i was closer to the mic on the headset

Apple does not repair devices beyond replacing the screen on some models or a battery replacement.  They replace the ENTIRE device.
For the Out of Warranty replacement cost, you could have gotten a fully functional replacement device.  Instead you chose to spend less to get only the screen replaced and continue to live with additional issues.
Apple will not touch the device now.  They will know that it was opened elsewhere and that the replacement screen is not original.

  • No sound with ALSA and/or Pulse from built-in Intel 5 Series Card

    Hello,
I posted a thread about a similar problem to this 4 years ago, but that solution is no longer working for me, and I'm just now returning to Arch after floating between a few different distros, so I'm not as knowledgeable about this as I might once have been.
Basically, my problem is that sound does not work on my laptop, neither through the internal speakers or headphone jack, and neither with plain ALSA nor Pulseaudio. This leads me to believe that there is some underlying problem that once solved, will allow plain ALSA and Pulse to work properly, but that's just speculation. I've put several hours of research into this so far with no luck. Everything in alsamixer is unmuted and looks right. I'm going to dump as much relevant info on my setup below in hopes that someone more knowledgeable than I can spot the issue:

I am using an early 2008 MacBook Pro and am having issues with it deleting text on its own (in word, emails, etc.). As I am typing it all of a sudden starts deleting and I can't stop it. This happened once before and it was due to a buldging battery pressing on the track pad. I checked the battery and it appears to be fine. What can I do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

When iOS 6.1 comes out I would update.

  • Mic Volume Too Low

    Hi,
My mic volume is too low, it seems to be working from the inside of my mac so every key is higher than my voice and my trackpad clicks too. I've searched here and there is no solution for this. Yet... I uninstalled Podcaster (Livestream software) to see if that's the problem but it's not.

I did that and it didn't work, also I notice Skype auto adjusts my volume, so everytime somebody elses talks it goes down, but doesn't go back up after they end. But it's still low, to talk I have to get closser to the keys to talk through them I guess.
In Facetime is just low, volume is not adjusted.

    Hello @voicewizard,
I understand that you are having audio issues with your audio having to ramp up before it hits the normal output range. I would be happy to assist you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer as there are numerous HP ENVY 810 All-In-One Desktop PC variations. I am linking an HP Support document below that will show you how to find your product number. As well, if you could indicate which operating system you are using. And whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit as with this and the product number I can provide you with accurate information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the requested information and I would be happy to provide you with assistance. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!
Please click the "Thumbs Up" on the bottom right of this post to say thank you if you appreciate the support I provide!
Also be sure to mark my post as “Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others who face the same challenge find the same solution.

  • OJSP classpath problems and other OJSP issues

    Hi,
We are running into a number of OJSP problems. The technology stack we are using is :
    Apache 1.3.12
    Jserv 2.0
    Jswdk 1.0.1
    OJSP 1.0.0.6
    The issues we have are:
    1) The OJSP classpaths mechanism as described in the documentation does not work. In our configuration, globals.jsa resides under apache/htdocs. The WEB-INF directory also sits under apache/htdocs.
It seems that OJSP completely ignores WEB-INF/lib. Any jars that the JSP may need have to be put on the servlet classpath (wrapper.classpath).
OJSP will pick up modified beans from
WEB-INF/classes but only for beans that
use JDBC with thick drivers or for beans
that don't use the JDBC driver at all.
    2) We got our application to work by moving everything that the JSPs may need to the servlet classpath. However, OJSP would hang when switching between various JSPs. Stopping apache in this case also caused the port to be held by some runaway process. We then had to start apache on a different port.
    So our questions are:
    1) Is OJSP going to support thin JDBC drivers?
    2) Are there other ways of getting bean reloading to work? Bouncing the server, everytime a bean changes is not a viable option for us.
    3) Are there any known issues with OJSP hanging when navigating from page to page?
    Thanks,
    Munazza

But not we see 2 cluster objects in C1 the old one is complaining with the NDS sync for the GroupWise pool and master ip resource says new node under location.
The new cluster objects see the servers properly but no cluster volumes and I cannot create any.
Nssmu under both servers sees the clustered volumes properly. Check volume objects and trustees under Dsrepair sees only sys.
So how do I make everything work under the new cluster?
    Help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks M.
Well could not find the cluster forum :(
Anyhow this is the fix: Deleted all old cluster objects from C1 recreated e-dir objects for clustered pools with nssmu which published the correct clustered info in C1, and allowed me to create new cluster volumes in C1, under the new cluster.
But took me much longer than type these 3 lines:)
    Cheers.
