Micro-DVI Adapter question

I just bought a new MacBook with a Micro-DVI port. I still have several Mini-DVI adapter cables from my previous MacBook. Is there a Micro-DVI to Mini-DVI adapter so that I can buy just one adapter instead of replacing the 4 adapter cables I already have?
-Darrell

Yes, it will work.
DVI comes in 3 flavors: DVI-A, DVI-D, and DVI-I. DVI-A is analog-only and, in practice isn't used. DVI-D is digital-only and works with digital monitors but won't allow you to use something like a DVI-to-VGA adapter (because VGA is analog).
The Mac uses the more common DVI-I ('I' for 'integrated'), allowing it to be connected to both analog and digital DVI displays.

  • Multiple Monitors - DV-D Micro DVI question

    Hello,
I need some help. I want to connect three monitors to my computer. I bought a DualHead2GO adapter which is supposed to split the DVI into two monitors.
    Here's my problem:
The micro dvi cable I have for my imac only gives me DVI-D. Somehow I need to convert that to a DVI-I.
    Questions:
    - Is there a micro DVI-I connector for the imac? All I could find is DVI-D.
    - Does anyone know from experience if a gender changer from DVI-I to DVI-D would work? I am guessing that it should because the signal is still digital?? But I don't know...
    Please help!
    Chad

    RB,
Thanks for the reply. I got the displayport to dvi adapter and am now using both monitors - the arrangement in OS X: 30inch is main, 20inch is second.
But I still cannot get Aperture to get the smaller display to show the browser/adjustments/metadata/etc, with the larger display showing the full screen preview. My goal is to do full screen proofing on the 30 inch, while using the smaller monitor to do the browsing.
Maybe the only way to do this is to change the monitor arrangement in OS X prior to launching Aperture - ie make the 20 inch the primary monitor. But that's kind of a pain.
    Any suggestions?

  • Apple Micro-DVI to Video Adapter New MacBook Air

    Hi All,
I am brand new to the Mac world (Been a PC user my entire life). Thought I would take a gamble on a Mac and see how it goes. So far I have been really impressed and happy!
I bought a MacBook Air a few weeks ago. It's a 2.13 GHZ MacBook Air. I would like to connect it to my "old school" standard TV which has S-Video and RCA (Yellow) inputs. I went on the Apple Store and found the Apple Micro-DVI to Video Adapter which says it is designed for a MacBook Air. Previosly though, I saw a discussion on another Mac type site that said this adapter was designed for the old MacBook Air laptops. Does anyone know if this adapter will work on my new MacBook Air? The techspecs call my MacBook Air video output a "MiniDisplay Port". Is this just a new name for Micro-DVI?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Peter

No, there is currently no adapter available to go from mini displayport to a compostie or s-video tv. Monoprice.com sells a mini displayport to hdmi cable. That's the closest there is.
    Your mba doesn't have a mini-dvi port.

I just bought a Micro-DVI to video adapter to try and hook my MacBook Pro 13" that I bought in mid 2009 to my old TV (svideo), the adapter doesn't seem to fit any of the connections on my macBook pro, is right adapter?

Apple doesn't offer a MDP to AV or componet connect . Only DVI and VGA. They also don't offer one to HDMI. You have to go aftermarket to get one to HDMI.
Quite right, but as the OP does not have component or composite connections not important.
To the OP, this does work, but is not the cheapest, and as it appears that Apple no longer sell an SVideo adaptor cable 3rd party it will have to be.

  • How do I connect  Apple 20" Cinema Display to orignal MacBook Air which does not have a Fire-Wire port. Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated. I have the Micro-DVI to DVI adapter. Norm

I Wish to connect my 6 year old Apple 20" Cinema Display to an orignal MacBook Air which does not have a Fire-Wire port. Is this possible? Any advice would be appreciated. I have the Micro-DVI to DVI adapter. Norm

The FireWire cable is just for the FireWire ports on the display.  The display will run without it.

  • Apple Micro-DVI to VGA Adapter for a White Macbook

When I read about the Apple Micro-DVI to VGA Adapter it talks about how it's designed for the MacBook Air and works with MacBook Pro, but will it work with a regular MacBook? My MacBook seems to have the same port necessary...

You're sure that that port does not look like that:

In this case it's a Mini DVI port

  • Question about Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I want to transfer the display from Dell XPS 15 to Dell ST2220M monitor.
Purchased a HDMI - DVI cable from ebay and tried using it. The laptop shows the monitor name but the display doesn't get passed onto the monitor. The monitor reads "No DVI-D cable".
Does anyone know if Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter works in my case?

  • Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter - Gender Question

The Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter photograph in the Apple Store looks like the DVI end is female.
    Is this correct?
The Overview photo is good because it made me aware that I needed more than just the adapter itself to use it, but I think it would help if an "end-on" view could also accompany the view of this product - just for old fogeys like me.
I'm sure that some sort of industry 'convention' must exist so that I could use to determine this for myself. Be jiggered if I could find one though.

Yes, the end is female. That makes it the same as if the connector were built-in. For example, the connector on the MacBook Pro is a female DVI. So you would need the same, and very common, DVI male-to-male connector to hook up a monitor. You don't need any extra adapters. Just the cable. Or if you have an Apple Cinema Display, the correct cable is already attached to the monitor.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter

Ok I have this adaptor and the RCA out one to. My question is do they sell a extension to connect to the Mini-DVI end that will make it longer so I can connect my 20in Cinema Display to my 20in Intel IMAC I can do it now, but this is the way I have it set up now, I have a shelve with the PC up on top off to my Right and the Cinema Display is also on the Right side of my L Shaped Desk and If I want to hook my Display up to the IMAC which is off to the Left I have to Disconect it from the PC up top then bring down the cord all the way over to the IMAC and then Unplug the Display its a very big Task to do. I would just like to get either a DVI extension to plug into the Display or a Extension for the MINI-DVI part to connect to the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter to make that longer so I can reach it up to the Top shelve so I can just swap them when I want to. If anyone knows if they sell that. That would be cool, I have not been able to find anything yet.

I actually think I found what I need now. Found a Male To Female 3 foot Exetension, So Thanks to anyone Who was going to Answer to this or was thinking about it

  • Apple Mini DVI to DVI Adapter to connect Win7 tower to iMac / Target Display Mode

I currently run Windows on bootcamp on the iMac (Mid-2011), although the tasks I perform (3D modelling, rendering and such) cause the Mac to get very hot, and as a result hae a slight burn mark on the LED LCD screen.
I am buying a Windows machine, and am to uninstall bootcamp and use the Mac purely for OSX, but use the iMac screen as a monitor for the tower using Target Display Mode. My issue is - the Windows 7 tower only has DVI output. And as I understand, the Mid-2011 iMac only supports Target Display Mode via a thunderbolt cable.
My question is - Will the Apple Mini DVI to DVI adapter allow me to connect the DVI-only tower to the iMac? Thanks in advance x

Oh, I should mention also that the iMac is the 27" model. Mid-2011 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7 with 4GB RAM and 1TB Harddrive. And ATI HD5450 1GB Graphics.

  • How to connect a micro DVI display to a macbook

I want to connect a new 27" apple display to my macbook from 2008.
I can not find a mini DVI to micro DVI or thunderbold adapter. Does this exist or do I need to vonvert from mini DVI to HDMI and the to micro DVI ?
    Thanks in advance.

The FireWire cable is just for the FireWire ports on the display.  The display will run without it.

  • Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter

I am looking to get a second monitor for my iMac G5 for FCP (I'm also looking to get Final Cut Studio). In the help file it says the iMac G5 has a Mini-VGA port, but at the Apple store I bought a Mini-DVI to VGA and Mini-DVI to TV adapter and they worked. My question is: will the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter work on my iMac if I get a DVI only display, or will it only work on the new PowerBook video ports?

Here's the adapter I bought that plugs in to my iMac: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71701/wo/wG77sit XfhnR207tv3YJVD1Q9Tc/6.SLID?mco=75A42EE8&nplm=M9319G%2FA
It says it goes from Mini-DVI to Video, but the help file on my Mac says I have a Mini-VGA port.
This is the thing I want to get: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71701/wo/wG77sit XfhnR207tv3YJVD1Q9Tc/13.SLID?mco=75AEA371&nplm=M9321G%2FA
But will it plug in to my computer?

  • Mac Mini Newbie + Viewsonic VX2450WM monitor.  Need HDMI to DVI adapter?  What cords needed?

    Mac Mini Newbie here.
Getting the Viewsonic VX2450WM monitor for it. There is no HDMI on this monitor, but reviews said it's Mac mini compatible.
Do I need to get an additional cord?  HDMI to DVI adapter cable? Does the supplied short white cord inside Mac Mini packaging suffice?
    Thank you!
    Art

No, the HDMI on Mini only support digital VGA is analogue
Can the HDMI port drive analog displays (VGA displays for example) using adapters?
No.  The HDMI port will drive digital connections—such as DVI—using the adapter that came with the Mac mini, but cannot be used for analog displays such as VGA. You can purchase a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter separately to drive analog displays.

  • New Mac Mini thunderbolt to DVI adapter issues

    Hi there,
I'm working on a new studio installation. We have a new Mac Mini that we're trying to connect up to a 30-inch Cinema HD display with DVI input. We have a Kanex C30 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter that plugs into the Thunderbolt port and one of the USB ports (for power) on the back of the Mini, but despite our best efforts we aren't getting anything on the display. Going Mac - adapter - display results in about 7/8ths of the screen going white and displaying two green and misshapen Apple logos for about 5 seconds before it goes blank.
Ultimately we want to run it over quite a long DVI cable and currently have an Extron signal booster in place, which works perfectly from the Mac Mini's HDMI output through an HDMI to DVI adapter. However we're already using the HDMI output to feed another monitor.
    So two questions really:
    1. Can the Mac Mini feed two separate displays of different sizes? The 30-inch over Thunderbolt to DVI and another Apple 24 inch display over HDMI to DVI.
    2. Does anybody have any experience with the Kanex or can you recommend an adapter that will work for us?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This whole process has been a very long headache!
    Many thanks,
    Josh
