Microcell: white vs black models

This is not a question, but just some info for anyone interested. I had an older white Microcell (model DPH151) and just got a new black model (DPH154) and thought I would post some comparisons I measured (other than the physical differences, which are obvious): Power Consumption:I measured the "idle" power draw of both models using their stock AC adapters. By idle I mean powered up, fully activated/online, but with no call in progress (probably the most common condition): White model: 13 wattsBlack model 6 watts This is a notable improvement, although in the scheme of things not really a big difference; in my area that amounts to about $12/year in electricity saved with the black model. I also measured both devices with the same 3rd party 12v AC adapter and got the same results, so the power savings are due to updated electronics in the new model, not any differences in the AC adapters they come with (although the new one comes with an efficiency "Level V" adapter and the old one is "Level IV"). Cell StrengthI measured cell strength at 3 locations around my house. I put my phone in diagnostic mode to test the cell strength. Numbers closer to 0 are better. White model:Position 1: -30 dBPosition 2: -80 dBPostion 3: -99 dB Black model:Position 1: -30 dBPosition 2: -76 dBPosition 3: -97 dB The new black model came out slightly ahead but these numbers are so close I'm calling it a statistical draw. It's possible there are some modest improvements in signal strength but certainly nothing to buy a new device for. (Notes about testing: the iPhone can be put into diagonstic mode by dialing *3001#12345#*. The cell strength is measured in dB, which is a measure of signal loss, so the numbers are always negative and closer to 0 means less loss. Since the phone was sometimes slow to update the display after being moved, I put the phone into airplane mode and then back to regular mode before taking each reading. Also, our property has zero AT&T service... in fact there is no service for at least a mile... so I think the results of this test are not affected by any real AT&T towers, but I can't know that for sure.) Cell Data SpeedI made a few measurements of 3G data speeds (with my phone's wifi turned off), but the results were so inconsistant I won't bother to report them. I assume the data speeds are influenced by the speed of my internet connection, which of course can vary for unpredicable reasons. Hopefully anyone using a Microcell has a wifi network, so 3G data speeds are not relavent. Not Tested:- Activation/startup times. Anecdotally the models seem to be about the same (~5 minutes after the first activation).- Number of call drops- Audio quality while on a call

Keep in mind that in order for cellphone signal boosters to work in your location, you still need to be able to receive a measurable signal (typically at least one bar, some users say two) somewhere inside your house. If you have to walk outside your house to get a cellphone signal, you may not find that a signal booster will work for you.
Using the Cel-Fi Pro as an example, you place the Window Unit where it can receive the best signal from the nearest celltower. The Coverage Unit is placed within the house in a centrally located position to provide coverage for your cellphones. The Cel-Fi Pro is authorized by AT&T and provides 3G, 4G and LTE frequency coverage. It supposedly has a coverage range of 13,000 sq. ft. vs. the Mcell's 5,000 sq. ft. It is a plug and play system with no external antennas to mount.
weBoost (formerly Wilson Electronics) has signal boosters also but they are more installation robust and require mounting antennas outside and inside.
Cellphone signal booster products like these while approved for use on most of the major carrier's networks are still required to be registered with the carrier. In addition, E911 location information may not be provided or may be inaccurate when using these products.
These solutions may work for you but they are expensive, so expect to pay $400 to $900 for a decent signal booster. If you decide to try one, make sure they have a return policy if you find they don't work well in your situation. Cel-Fi offers 30 day returns if you are not happy with their products as does weBoost.

• 5TH Generation iPod's: White OR Black?

Before I begin here, these boards are a mess! I just returned as a new user after being here years ago and I have to tell you, these boards have really gone down hill as far as stuff being catagorized correctly. Also there are no 'general boards' for the iPod's, very frustrating! Not to mention that when I signed up with an Apple ID, I then couldn't use that same ID to post on the forums, I had to use the # 0's in my ID in order to use what I wanted...
Anyways I'm back again for another iPod. I really was interested in the BLACK 30GB OR 60GB model but I have heard numerous reviews that the BLACK iPod's will get scratched up as soon as you touch the thing...by just holding it!? And that any scratch or marks stick out like a soar thumb. Most people are telling me to forget about getting a black one and just stick with a white one.
What do you guys recommend? I REALLY wanted a black one, as I'm a huge fan of black with technology products but if it's going to look like trash after a week of owning it, I would just rather stick with the white one.
Any suggestions, comments, etc?
Thanks!
P.S. Just out of curiosity, if I do get a black model, I'm going to assume that the black models also come with BLACK earbuds and not white ones?

I have Green iPod Mini 4 GB. I didn't buy a protective cover for it. Now it seems like it has survived from World War II barely (Hey It still working propebly).
I buyed new iPod Video 60 GB Black of course. I buy zCover for it. Okay it was not cheap but it will protect my iPod.
It is good to by docking station. I buyed it, because I dropped my iPod mini few times while loading music to it.
For headphones. If you want soundquality forgot iPod own and buy goodones. I don't use earbuds but I buyed Koss Sporta Pro headphones. Sounds are like whole new world now.

If the paint chips this easy now what's my phone gonna look like in a years time after being in and out of my pocket, car keys, kids getting hold of it... It looks like anything could chip the paint. So my question is what kind of paint or marker I can use to repaint the edge of iPhone and hide that paint chips. I tried with black permanent marker but it comes off easy. Plase give me some advice because I'm desperate sad and disappointed. My new black iPhone 5 looks like trash with that silver dots. Thank you apple once again...

• HT1349 The iPhone 4S setting (white on black) it is so cool! But one thing that I don't know if Apple is aware of this glitch or not, but they need to fix it, when you go to that mode every picture and every icon go to negative view, has anyone experience

One very COOL feature on iPhone 4S that I just discovered, is the (White on Black) display mode, which is so cool and atrictive. When you go to that mode, every picture on the iPhone, facebook, icons and every other applications that displays a picture are effected, native or installed Apps. that displays a picture goes in to negative view, if you want to view your pictures, you have to go back to the default setting, very disappointing.
This is a very cool feature and Apple needs to find a way that all photos are immune and preserved from the conversion when a user switches to that mode.
Love to hear your comments and suggestions and I'm sure that Apple developers can come up with a solution to fix the glitch.

The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.

Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

• Why doesn't the 3-way CC do anything when I click on "white" or "black"??

Hey y'all! I'm new here from FCP7. I don't know if this is normal or if I'm missing something but I definitely can't seem to be able to figure it out and it's driving me crazy!
I have noticed that the 3way color corrector doesn't do much when I click on an area that's supposed to be "white" or "black". So I thought I'd do some testing. In photoshop I created a 3-color image (black, white, & 50% grey) and then applied a blue tint to it. Then imported the tinted image in both Premiere and FCP7.
Here's the result in PrPro:
Here's the result in FCP7:
This is what I do:
- i apply the 3-way color corrector in PrPro
- i click on the little "highlights" eye dropper
- click on the white portion of the image
The result? Nothing.
I do the same for the midtones and the shadows. And I end up with what you see in the first image on the left.
When I do exactly the same in FCP7 you can see it gets rid of the blue tint and I end up with an image that is exactly what white/black/midtones should look...
WHAT AM I MISSING IN PREMIERE PRO???

Now we're starting to get somewhere!
Robmbrown, I love the color tests you just did. I will make sure to change those values in my preset as well.
Neil, I have not worked with SpeedGrade yet so I can't comment on that. However, I do know that if I use Sg then every time I want to make any adjustments to my image I will have to go through Sg again. That's one more app I have to use, one more step I have to do, one more project to manage, and after all that - I still have no control of the image once I'm back inside my editing application and every time I want to make a quick change to it I have to go through the process again. And when you have to do that a bunch of times every day while working with tight deadlines where every minute counts and you have your clients sitting next to you waiting then that workflow is just not an option for you. You need a quick/powerful/working 3 way color correction tool inside your editing application and you need it right then and there. Anything less than that is just not worth it. Currently, Premiere does not have that.
Kevin, please don't get me wrong. There are many features in Premiere Pro that I absolutely LOVE! The rate stretch tool is so much fun and such a time-saver! The ability to customize so many things and, as we just saw, create my own 3 way color corrector is amazing. However, I would trade all these amazing tools and features any day for an application that can give me the basic tools I need to edit my projects quickly yet professionally. This week I had to uninstall and re-install all the CC apps because Sg wasn't working and Premiere was freezing whenever I tried to scale a clip up or move it. After I did that, Premiere is still acting up but now Media Encoder also doesn't work. Next time, it's going to be After Effects... I don't want to have to rely on 5 different apps to be able to edit my projects, especially if they're so unreliable. I don't know how it was before so I don't know what progress Adobe has made on the development of all these apps. I made the switch to PP CC two months ago. I spent one month learning the software and customizing all the keyboard shortcuts and learning about all the cool features in it. I wanted to make sure that before I started complaining about anything that doesn't work it wasn't my fault for not knowing how to use the software. And if I didn't, then I would come here to learn from the pros about how it's done. But my mentality as an editor is to always find ways to do what I'm doing faster without compromising the quality of my projects. I think that's how most young editors think. For me, it either works or it doesn't. "It works BUT..." = Doesn't work. As Rob said, all these little things send the message that Adobe isn't taking this seriously. Now that I've seen both the good and the bad about Premiere it is obvious to me that this app was designed for "quick and dirty" kind of work. And if you want to get "professional" you have to use a bunch of other apps along with it which never work so you're pretty much stuck no matter what. Yes, I know that there are LOTS of people on here who have no problems with the apps working. But there are also JUST AS MANY people who are posting every day about something not working in some app. You're only as strong as your weakest link and, unfortunately for Adobe, it has way too many weak leaks in its chain and the strong ones just can't make up for them...
Anyway, this discussion has gone from a simple question about a filter into the whole philosophy of Adobe and the truth is we can keep talking about that stuff for days. So if you'll excuse me, I now need to go learn AVID. Hopefully, I have a different experience there. Good luck everyone and thanks for your help!!

• I bought a macbook pro retina ME665 in Dubai, and 3 month later its display stopped working properly.some white lines appeared on it and display itself became white and black. Can anybody suggest what should I do to fix this problem?

In October 2013 I was on Vacationin Dubai and bought there Macbook pro retina ME665. I returned to Kyrgystan (home town) and for New Year I was away for a week. When I came back i found that the dispaly of my laptop became white and black, some lines appeared on it. Everybody in my family told me that no one has dropped my laptop or done anything that can cause this problem. there is no any service provider of apple in my country. WIl, the international warranty cover this case? I bought this laptop not from apple store, but in a simple store and I lost reciept.

• White and black vertical lines

I Have the iPhone 5. It has been in a case since the day I bought it. It is 2 months out of warranty and I got white and black vertical lines while I was laying in bed. My friend tried checking my screen and replaced it with a working screen and it did the same thing so it wasn't the screen. Took my phone to Apple they said it's the screen and I have to pay $130 to fix it even with it out of warranty..... Lady standing next to me had the same problem they plugged it in fixed it and she was on her way with it. What is wrong with my phone? What should I do?

I have upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and found that all folders/files/pics in my disk drive have 'dotted' (either white or black) patterns on them. But it turns out fine when I open up the affected files/folders/pics. And this phenomenon persisted even after updating to the latest software. I proceeded to upgrade to 10.8 and updated the latest software thinking that this might resolve the problem but still stays the same way as it was. Could it be the Adobe flash player that is causing this problem? Please help.

• Iphone 6 plus screen flashing white and black

My iPhone 6 Plus 16Gb suddenly started to show screen artifacs, like flashing with white and black, so I can't see the springboard only black and white screen. Restart of the phone didn't help. Even when the phone is booting, Apple logo doesn't appear and then again flashes. As it seems on background everything is working, as I can receive sms and phone calls. It is just the screen. iPhobe 6 Plus is brand new, I've been using it for 1 week and it never dropped. No physical damage, no nothing, just flashing

Have you tried a Reset by holding down the Sleep / Wake Button and the Home Button at the same time until the white Apple logo appears, then let go of the buttons, but wait until the Reset completes and you are back at your lock-screen? If this doesn't work then do you have a computer with the current version of iTunes? If yes and you already have a Backup of your Media and Data on iCloud or iTunes, then you can put the iPhone in DFU Mode. Don't do this unless you have a Backup and also have a computer with the latest iTunes. You will need your Apple ID and Password. To go to DFU Mode you can hold the Home button while you plug the Lightning Cable into the iPhone, a graphic will appear on the iPhone screen showing that you need to connect to iTunes. At that point just connect the iPhone via the Lightning Cable with USB into your Computer. Open the iTunes App on the Computer and wait until a button appears representing the connected iPhone. Then click on the iPhone button on the iTunes screen and it should open to the Summary page. At that point you can Restore the iPhone to Factory Settings and bring it up as A New Phone. The iPhone should screen should then show Hello and you will need to connect to your WiFi via your Router WiFi Password and then answer all the question put forth by the iPhone. When the "Lets Get Started" occurs you can thoroughly check out the iPhone to make sure it is all OK. When satisfied that things are good, you can plug into the computer and iTunes and this time Restore from Backup. or if you Backup is in iCloud you can Restore over the air.

How do you change the text color on the home page in iO7 from white to black? I tried to invert the color but that reverses everything inclufing pictures.

Yes, you can. If you change your wallpaper to a very light or white color the text turns black.

• White and black point vs ??

I never know which forum to post these things, so I'll start with the photographers.

These three shots are as follows: (1) the camera raw version, (2) where I moved the sliders from the ends to approximately the beginning/end of the major portion of the histogram, and (3) using the threshold control to find the white and black points in the main part of the picture.

Then, in the two adjusted versions, I lightened the image with the curves control.

In both these cases, I used the grey dropper to touch the same spot on one of the rocks, to get the apparent neutral point.

It seems to me that the threshold method to find the white and black points is preferred, based on the overall color and appearance of the finished adjustment.

But, I've found on some images where the histogram has missing black and missing white, if I adjust the sliders to these two ends, I get pretty much the same outcome, as far as the contrast, color, and grey point.

Could I have some advice on the preferred method to use in handling my image adjustments? Doing it the threshold method takes more time, and sometimes it's difficult to find the white and black points, or even the grey point.

Thanks.

Yes the image was purposely underexposed. What I was trying to accomplish was to speed up the shutter speed to remove the slight blurring and compensate by pulling data from the shadows. Even though the lens has an image stabilizer the amount of light wasn't enough for a proper sharp shot.
this image is before touch up
These two images are F/5.6, 1/20, ISO 800
After touch up
Better lit scene but shows slight motion blur
This last image is F/5.6, 1/4, ISO 800
I believe that I will have to wait next year and hope I have a faster lens by then. I just don't think the 28mm-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lens is fast enough. I was trying this without a tripod to get in tighter.
Also I was taking these shots without the flash to get the drama of the tree lights.
What I would have prefer is a shutter speed of 1/125 or better as it helps with my hands shaking I believe the slowest should be 1/60
And the lower the ISO the better for noise.
These preferences are what I am used to with my Canon G3 that does not have IS.
I am getting so off track here, lol. But anyways, here are the pictures.
