Micron Millenium a candidate for Archlinux?

I have an old Micron Millenium XKu that came with Win95 installed.
Pentium II MMX
I'd kinda like to give Arch a shot.
I'd probably have to put a new hard drive in the box because I think the one that's in there is only 8 GB.
I'm not familiar with the whole 'architecture' thing.
Would this computer be a viable candidate for Archlinux?

I checked the ram in my Micron (mentioned in the first post) and it does have 128MB.
But it only has a modem and no NIC, so I'll have to either cannibalize one from one of my other older computers or perhaps use one of them instead of the Micron for the Arch install.
I notice that some of them have Celeron processors. If these computers are similar in age to the Micron (I think they are), would they be viable candidates too?
Thanks again for your input.
Since the first Celeron  was based  of the Pentium II, they should be. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_P6. But if we are really talking about a first generation  Celeron, then I hope you have lots of time .

  • Service Configuration Tool (svc) for Archlinux

Hello, I'm providing you with a very simple Service Configuration Tool for the management of system services (scripts located inside /etc/rc.d).
    DOWNLOAD LINK: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=30660
    Usage:
    svc DAEMON subcommand
DAEMON = name of the service to manage
subcommand = subcommand to pass to the service (e.g. start)
    Example (DAEMON=samba):
    svc samba enable
    svc samba disable
    svc samba configure
It acts as a wrapper for services and provides a mechanism for enabling (starting and adding the daemon to /etc/rc.conf) and disabling (stopping and removing the daemon from /etc/rc.conf) them. The tool does not constrain your subcommands to only enable and disable, any other service subcommand should act as expected (the value of this subcommand is passed to the rc.d script directly).
By its own, the script doesn't do much. It is with the help of a shell with a completion system (like zsh or recent versions of bash) that you can get the full benefits of it. For example, I only have to type "svc <TAB>" and all available system services will be available for completion, once a service is typed, it's subcommands (start, stop, restart, etc) will be available for completion too, along with enable and disable.
Other feature I integrate into some rc.d scripts is the subcommand "configure", which simply calls an editor with the service configuration file (e.g. vim /etc/samba/smb.conf). By combining this and the "svc" tool I can easily configure some services (the ones that make sense, apache is not a good candidate for this since it's got many configuration files): "svc samba configure".
This was done for two reasons: 1) I used opensolaris for over a year and a half, and when I switched back to linux there was a utility I really missed: "svcadm" (actually, the whole SMF is what I miss, but such a complete/beautiful init framework/service management replacement won't make it into gnu/linux any time soon); 2) As a system administrator, it's daunting to have to type "/e<TAB>/r<TAB>.<TAB>/$SERVICE_NAME $SUBCOMMAND" when I need to manage a service, it's much more pleasant to simply write "svc <TAB> $SERVICE_NAME $SUBCOMMAND" ($SERVICE_NAME and $SUBCOMMAND show options for completion when pressing <TAB>).
Along with the "svc" script, a script for the zsh completion system is provided. Please contact me if you have an implementation for bash.
    Enjoy,
    Edgar Merino

You could easily get rid of those premade functions and integrate the functionality inside the _svc script:
In the "svc()" function, for every option of the switch (case) statement, prefix the calls to the rc.d scripts with "sudo", e.g. "sudo ${SERVICES_DIR}/$1 start". If you want to constrain completion options for services to only "( start stop restart)", remove the "enable" and "disable" bindings defined in the "svc()" function and modify the "_svc()"  function (notice the underscore) like this:
    _svc() {
    case $CURRENT in
    2) # Show services under /etc/rc.d for completion
    _services
    3) # Show current service subcommands for completion
    # This is here so that _init_d works on the service name rather
    # than on the actual function name "svc"
    (( CURRENT-- ))
    shift words
    # CONSTRAIN COMPLETION OPTIONS TO ONLY start, stop and restart
    compadd start stop restart
    esac
So, would I have to call it via _svc $DAEMON start or something similar, then?

  • Wifi card for archlinux?

I want to buy a wifi card. How wifi card for archlinux, please?

The driver for prism2/2.5/3 chipsets is provided by the wlan-ng26 package, not by the kernel. It's a very mature and stable driver. If it's prism54, the original version is in the kernel, but you would need to check on prism54.org before using it - there have been various developments since.

  • Bash-completion for archlinux (ready for testing)

EDIT (20031013): new url & version 1.0 is out
    Hello all,
    I've created a bash-completion script for AL.
    Get it from :
    http://www.kegep.tuc.gr/~manolis/archli … ion.script
    Then :
    pacman -S bash-completion
    copy my script as /etc/bash_completion.d/archlinux
    source /etc/profile
or log out & back in to enable auto-completion.
Then simply try pacman -S [tab] to check it.
So far it auto-completes the init scripts (try /etc/rc.d/network [tab]...), makepkg & pacman.
Please test it & report any problems or suggestions so that it could get included in the bash-completion pkg.

    sud_crow wrote:Im not chassing you, i swear!
I begin to feel like a dot in pacman .
sud_crow wrote:Can you post some explination about its use?? what it does exactly (i know what auto-completions is, but,  what auto-completes and how?)
Auto-completion is the best thing since fresh bread . You already use it, when you press [tab] or (ie pac[tab]) and it completes the rest of the word (ie pacman). The bash-completion pkg provides some more advanced completion features, like man pac[tab] and it completes it to man pacman, or ssh [tab] and it completes using the hosts included in ~/.ssh/known_hosts.
My script provides these features for ArchLinux. Simply try pacman -S [tab] and enjoy the list of all available packages for installation on your system. Or pacman -Q -l [tab] that completes from packages installed in your system. Then try /etc/rc.d/network [tab], it will list 'restart start stop'
(ps. [tab] == pressing the 'tab' key on your keyboard btw.)

  • How can i decide candidates for line item dimension?

1Q): we have many infocubes out of all these infocubes, i have to decide which infocubes are the candidates for lineitem dimension? How to do it? Please tell me the technical specs how to do the analysis to find out the candidates for line item dimension?
2Q): if i have the small dimension can i combine all these dimension in to one dimension? what is the benefit of doing this? how to find out which dimensions are small?
<u>Pizzaman i like to hear from you on this topic</u>. Thanks to SDN Community. i appreciate your help. Again Thank you.

The process of figuring out what you might want to create as a line item dimension can vary a bit, it can depend a lot on your exisitng level of domain expertise (how well do you know the data in question). If you are familiar with the data, I would recommend you just take an initial guess at what you believe could be line item dimensions.  If you are not familiar witht the data, you might want to examine the source more to understand the cardinality of different characteristics and identify any relationships between characteristics.
I really encourage people to just go ahead and model it and load some data and review, rather than agonizing over developing the theoretically perfect model on paper before they start. You learn a lot more that way.
Any of the SAP rules of thumb, are just that, general rules, not a pronouncement from God.  There are always extenuating or unique circumstances that might warrant disregarding the rule, e.g. if the InfoCube will never become very large, maybe some of the concerns just are not worth your effort.
With every release of the Oracle (and the other DBs too)Oracle keeps getting better at data warehousing and star schemas. Oracle 10i is supposed to have made handling bitmap indices much more efficient, which is on of the  factors influencing the decision to create a line item dimension.
There are other threads on SDN on line item dims that provide more technical detail and can help answer you first question
As far as 2Q - generally, it's better to have several small dimensions than one larger dimension. But having said that, combining a few <b>very small dimensions</b> into another  slightly larger (<i>but still small</i>) dimension is a good idea. It keeps the number of table joins down which will improve query performance. You would do this with characterisitcs that have very few values, e.g. yes/no indicators.
    e.g.
You have 8 characteristics that all of which have only two values. You put them in one dimension, and the max size of the dimension table is still only 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 or 256 rows.  If you had these characteristics in other much larger dimensions, it's not hard to see it causing those dimensions to double, perhaps creating hundreds of thousands of dimension table rows to be created.

  • Candidates for HANA sidecar usage

Hello folks - we have a financial landscape running ERP6 EHP4 on Oracle RDBMS, and are considering 2 options
    1) once ECC/ERP on HANA is available - migrate to HANA from Oracle (so the entire system would run on HANA)
    2) setup a sidecar HANA - and then use it for a select group of tables/processes - to help improve performance against those objects (so data from the ERP system would get pulled into the HANA sidecar and queries/jobs would run against the sidecar instead of the original ERP system itself)
For the 2nd option - is there any SAP service or tool that can help us pinpoint what tables would be the best candidates for use in the sidecar?  I can't find this anywhere but would think SAP would be more than happy to guide customers to anything that gets them using HANA. (the first option is probably more long-term for us BTW)
    Thanks

    Hi Ben,
As you have mentioned, Option 1 should always be the long term approach. However , to leverage the benefits of HANA immediately, suggested approach could be to choose option 2, i.e. HANA is used in side car approach, where in the SAP products - ERP, CRM, SCM etc continue to use classical database , but the table and data in these are replicated to HANA database. This can be done for selected scenarios or select transactions / business processes - ex: - CO-PA or Custom transactions / reports that have huge performance issues.
Following SAP tools can be used to identify potential programs/scenarios for Optimization.
SQLM- SQL Monitor - This logs all the SQL statements that are executed on an ABAP application , would help to identify the programs that have performance issues due to SQL statements. The log for around 1-2 weeks can be checked to identify potential areas of optimization.
SWLT- Performance Tuning Worklist    - Used to combine static check results with SQLM snapshot to identify the hotspots  within programs. We can use this tool in the production system for few days to identify the programs/transactions that need optimization.
Enhanced SCI- Code Inspector  - this tool can be used to perform Static checks within ABAP programs and identify code patterns that could be optimized. This can be very useful for Custom ABAP programs and can be readily used in dev/quality systems as well.
SAP also suggests the use of  Business scenario recommendations report for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, This report identifies the specific business value scenarios most relevant to you after analyzing your current production usage and your productive SAP landscape. Although this is suggested for option 1, same can be used to identify potential areas of Optimization. Details of the same can be found on www.suiteonhana.com , you will need to upload your production log details so that you can receive your results report by email. The site also has a sample report.

  • How to find the tables which are the candidates for gathering stats in 10g

    Hi,
In 10g how can we find the tables, partitions which are the candidates for gathering the stats.
I want to findo those tables, partitions and gather the stats on daily basis.
    Thanks,
    Mahi

The probem you describe has been posted about before. There are known issues with the default dbms_stats parameter settings for some environements.
What you can do is just go ahead an manually submit dbms_stats commands with appropriate parameters for tables that have not been analyzed or modify the maintenance window to give it more time.
I would rather just generate the missing statistics myself then the job can continue to run in the normal maintenance window. Since the job should be looking only for tables that meet the stale requirements then once everything is analyzed it is likely the job can keep the statistics updated in the default time allowed.
Be warned that the default parameter settings do not work well for some tables in some environments and if that proves true for your shop you can generate workable statistics on a table and then lock them so the nightly job ships regenerating the statistics for that table. You would then manually unlock, generate, and lock that statistics for that table as necessary.

  • Manager cannot see Candidates for assessment in MSS E-Recruiting.

    Hi All,
    Hope everyone is ding good.
I have an issue in regards with Candidate Assessment by Manager.  Please have a look into this.
I was able to create Requisition and External application from Recruiter dashboard.
I can also complete all the activities including Candidate Assessment by Manager with Questionnaire. Manager was able to complete the questionnaire and assessment successfully.
Finally i could be able to perform Data transfer activity and completed hiring using PA48 Transaction.
But now, I am not able to perform the Candidate assessment by manager as no candidates are appearing in MSS E-Recruiting --> Candidate assessment.
Here in MSS  E-Recruiting I can see the requisitions released by Recruiter, but he cannot see Candidates for assessment.
Any help will be Highly appreciable.
    Thank you in advance.
    -Sekhar

    Hi Sekhar,
Additionally, the recruiter needs to create a questionnaire activity in status planned for a candidate and assign it to the manager linked to the requisition in order to have it in the MSS screen.

  • Identifying candidates for KEEP pool

    Hi,
recently a DBA I know was asked to make a list of candidates for KEEP pool in buffer cache. He's not familiar with the application. Is there an automated way to do this, or is this something that only someone familiar with the business logic can do manually?
I googled a bit on the subject, but haven't found much except for Mr. Burleson's scripts (who has a history of giving idiotic advice so I don't trust him) or rather general theoretical discussions (like the thread on AskTom). I'm interested in someone who has done it (or learned why this cannot be done) himself sharing his experience.
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,
    Nikolay

Jonathan - none of those referenced articles seem to have a recommendation as to what is appropriate for the KEEP cache. There is a mention of a large frequently used object.eey
I thought that small lookup tables that were frequently used were the best candidates for the KEEP pool. Is this not the case?
That suggestion was a consequence of a bug with the touch count algorithm that has been fixed. If blocks were read by TABLESCAN then their touch count was never incremented, so they would always fall off the end of the buffer cache LRU fairly promptly, hence putting them into a KEEP cache would solve the problem. However if the table was being used as a lookup table - with primary key access - the problem didn't arise and if it were a popular lookup then the normal LRU mechanism would keep it cached.
Can you provide any links to your books or articles that have a recommendation on how to select objects for the keep pool?I don't think there are any - I think it's only possible to make a highly generic statement and then think about individual cases and watch out for unexpected side effects. (That's what my comments above, and the articles, are about).
From my perspective - every time I've tried to beat the LRU by creating a KEEP pool I haven't managed to do any better than the default LRU and all I've managed to do is limit the flexibility of the system by carving a load of memory off the main cache.
I have used the KEEP pool successfully - but not for "KEEP"ing; I've used it simply to cache LOBs in a small part of the cache. I've also had a couple of successes with the RECYCLE pool as a damaged limitation mechanism.

What is the best video card for Archlinux distribution?
Is it possible to make Radeon HD 4870 work somehow in Archlinux, the same way like it works in Ubuntu?

Just see what drivers are you using with your ubuntu install? Catalyst/xf86-video-ati/radeonhd and install the same on arch.

  • [Solved] Where do I get Emacs 24 for Archlinux?

    hi list,
I could not find anything about emacs 24 in the repos, only a bazar version in AUR. Is that supposed to be the developer-version of emacs 24?
If not - where and how do I get emacs 24 for 64bit archlinux?
    cheers

Thats what I thought, and the bazar version could well be from the 23 series too. I send a personnal email.
BTW, found this working description how to install emacs 24 from source on Ubuntu:
    http://alexhenning.github.com/blog/2010 … on-ubuntu/
Would that be a valid recipe for archlinux too, if it turns out there is no package?

personally, I just went to a printing thing (dunno if there are these things anywhere but here in Chile, I'd guess there are, they have color lasers, plotters and nice paper) and asked them to print me one pdf in sticker paper, then I cutted it and pasted it onto the front of my case and over my two meta keys, that now sport a friendly stuffed penguin.

  • Finding out objects good candidates for reorganization ( datafile shrink)

    Hi Gurus,
I need to find out what can objects are good candidates for reorganization to allow shrinking some datafiles. one of the challenges i have is to try and figure out how i can release some space from the tablespace in one of our environment .Please let me know if you have any scripts for this.

Either on a tablespace by tablespace basis or as a general statement which of the following statements are more true than the other statements.
    1) More data is being INSERTED into the DB than being DELETED. In other words total disk space consumption is increasing?
    2) About the same amount of data in being INSERTED as being DELETED. In other words the amount of disk space consumed is at equilibrium.
    3) More data is being DELETED than being INSERTED. In other words less data is being held in the DB as time progresses.
Which statement best reflects your database environment?
