Microphone for Mac -- Windows chat ?

After being advised to buy a Macway (a French make) webcam [1], I splashed out, and well it doesn't work. Not only doesn't it work when I want to chat with friends using Windows/MSN, but it doesn't even work with those who have Macs and iChat. No sound, no video, nothing. Fine. It'll make a good doorstop. Oh, wait: I managed to chat last night with my mother via Skype, except that I could hear her, she could see me (even if my face was bright orange), but that was all. So she talked, I typed, and she laughed as I slugged my red wine.
I'm giving up. Forget video.
Having audio would be a good start. But can I find a microphone anywhere !??
Am I asking too much? All I want is to use Skype/MSN/IChat to hear and to speak to folk I know.
Any recommendations ?

I should read a bit more carefully. I could have
sworn that I was answering about a MacBook and not a
mini.
You are absolutely right about the microphone of
course, although it does have speakers (pretty basic
as they are). Sorry 'bout that.
It's not a problem.
My Mac Mini's speakers might be good or bad, but I've never tested them. Since day one, the thing has been rigged up to my stereo, and whilst I might gripe about other aspects of the Mac Mini, I admit that Apple's claim that they're 'media centres', is spot-on. iTunes is never switched off, and when I get into bed, I just kill the volume with the remote control, and turn it back up first thing in the morning. Music eighteen hours a day !
Anyway, that's off-topic for this forum. An hour ago, I was browsing through Apple's website, and I came across this image ..
http://minilien.fr/a0kdf7
'They have a "line in" socket ??' I muttered. I hadn't really paid attention to all of the sockets behind the Mac, but I took a peek, and there it was. A line in socket. So this means that normal headset/micro combinations will work.
So I've just dug into my credit card again, and bought this..
http://minilien.fr/a0kdf8
I've also just ordered a 500 GB hard drive, identical in size and colour to my Mini. I need to stop spending money, but as for the Mini: I love it. They're gonna have to bury me with it.

  • Advice on External HDD for Mac & Windows

    Hello
I am looking for advice regarding using a external HHD for Mac & Windows.
I searched the forum, but failed to find a updated thread on this subject matter.
I will be using the drive on both platforms regularly.
Should i use HFS+ with a small FAT32 partition to keep MacDrive on?
What is a good way to approach this?
Im not sure what would be optimal for both platforms.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Why just one?
Shopping list I can think of:
Vista: NTFS for backups and storage. Can be read by, but not written, Mac OS.
MacDrive 7: can access HFS+ from within Windows (but not x64 versions)
WinClone 1.5: to make backups of Windows from within Mac OS (requires disk image or partition to hold volume image)
SuperDuper: essential for OS X backups and bootable clone.
A drive that is used for emergency only and maybe backup partition, separate from your OS X and windows clone drive.
You can create large partitions with Disk Utility to be FAT32. Read and write in both, but not the best file system and limited to files less than 4GB.
FW800 would be fast and efficient interface. Also, eSATA if possible.

  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac ( Windows)

Is Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac ( Windows) a good system to add onto your mac? Or Will it make it slow?

As Ttut says, Parallels runs as an application, so there is absolutely no OS X performance decrease when Parallels is not running.
The good news is that you can download the Parallels 7 Desktop Trial and try it out for a few days before you decide to purchase it: http://www.parallels.com/download/desktop/ (But you still need a full copy of whichever Windows version you will use in order to test Parallels.)
The fastest WIndows performance on a Mac is achieved without Parallels. Use Boot Camp to install Windows and then boot directly into Windows at start-up. It is comparable to running Windows on a similarly-configured Windows PC. But with Boot Camp, you must reboot to switch back and forth between OS X and Windows.
But if you absolutely MUST use both Windows AND OS X applications at the same time, Parallels can do it. Both Windows performance and OS X performance are diminished by about 50% when both operating systems are running at the same time. Processor-intensive applications like graphics, photo, and video editing suffer the most noticeable performance hit. Text editing applications suffer the least. Online browsing experience depends upon the website visited. Flash-heavy websites suffer a lot.
Check the Parallels website and be certain that your MacBook has enough free hard drive space and enough RAM.

  • QQ International for Mac: Video Chat problem

    Hello Communities,
I downloaded the MAC version for QQ International to talk to a cousin of mine who will be working in China.  He's had it on his Windows system here in the states for sometime with no problems.  I can get the audio part to work, but the video function works sporadically, and it seems only to turn on my camera if I'm the one making the call.  What I've read says there is no video chat function for the Mac version, but that's strange given that my camera does come on in the cases I've mentioned.  I also then opened up Windows using Parallels, downloaded that version of it, and am having a similar problem.  I have since uninstalled the one on my Windows (in parallel) and the Mac one from my Mac.  There is an update for the Mac version of it, but when you click on it, it takes you to the Chinese version of the website, so I didn't proceed further.  Anyone have any experience with this and have a fix to make it work?
    Regards  and Thanks in advance

    HI Bassplayuh,
Since I downloaded the last QQ version on Tencent Website, as soon as I am called or I call for a video chat, my QQ crashes.... Tried to get the older version from the App store, but now it is the same.... Anyone got a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Viber Desktop for MAC - Exporting chat history

For some reason when I upgraded to the new Viber earlier this month on my iPhone, all of my call and chat history vanished from my phone and I didn't have a chance to export it.
The chat history that got deleted on my iPhone is still visible on my MacBook Air.
My question is, does anyone know how to export chat history from a MAC? I know how to do it from an iPhone, but seeing as the history isn't on the phone I can't export it. I need to do it from the laptop, if possible

Private browsing is not enabled. I have enabled "remember my browsing and download history."
Another answer suggested I might have an anti virus or something that is disabling history. I looked, but I don't have anything doing that. Safari and Chrome are both saving their histories normally.

  • Options for Seagate Backup Plus for Mac/Windows

I have a new Mac-mini (my first Mac since my original Mac 128), and just got a 3TB Seagate Backup Plus.  It's so new, I haven't even read up on Time Macine though I assume that's the way to go.
I originally had in mind partitioning the Seagate with one HFS+ for the Mac and one NTFS for my Windows laptop (Win7) and old Windows desktop (XP).  The latter is mainly for storing files in a place where it will be convenient to use them on the Mac.  But with all the threads about partition and other errors, I'm wondering if that's not so wise.
The obvious alternatives are leave the drive as NTFS and find something other than Time Machine for backing up the Mac - or format it as HFS+, use TM to backup the Mac, and install HFS+ drivers at least on my laptop.
I usually like to try and research these sorts of questions directly, but with the learning curve moving to the Mac, and all sorts of other things, it would take me to next year to find my ideal solution.  So for now, I'm just looking for suggestions on a backup strategy for the Mac that would, in addition to backups, leave space for manually archiving Mac files as well as exploiting the spare space on the external drive for some Windows purposes.  (Not much videos, mostly photos, finances, and eventually my main reason for getting the Mac, ios development.)
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Slideshows which work for Mac, Windows AND ipads/iphones???

    Hi.
My first post here & just getting into mac after many decades of windows!!
After much searching around I have finally found a place (Yola) where I can design a website which is compatible with all browsers/mac/windows..hurray.
However, due to the type of work that I do I need to display 50 photos (before/after). I want to do this with a slideshow. I have made up around 8 from different sites but each time there's a compatibility problem with ipads or iphones (but no problem with mac/windows/nokia smartphone).
Is there a slideshow (FREE) which will work across all platforms? Is iphoto the only way - and will that work with windows and is there a free version.
Finally, the website design software uses 'widgets' to place code into the site for photos/slideshows etc etc.
Any help would really be appreciated!
    David
PS Hope to be getting an ipad soon.

come on guys, someone here must play some games on their intel mac?

  • ZFS server as primary storage for Mac/Windows?

I want to use ZFS for most of my storage, accessible from Mac / Windows / Solaris / Linux / etc. Basically replacing most local SATA / USB / IDE drives with an array of SATA drives on a ZFS server. Low-latency is important.
    Is this reasonable / possible?
I currently have gigabit ethernet, but am afraid the performance would be too low. I'm hoping to improve the interconnect using an existing PCI Express x1 slot for the Windows machine, as all the other slots are full, but haven't found any likely-looking cards.
Yes, I'm a newbie to such things. Use small words.

While possible, the issue resides with solaris itself, not ZFS. ZFS is easy to use and learn. In a few hours you can master it...
But if you want to network it to be accessible by windows you need to set up samba on solaris so that it can be accessed by windows... well on a scale of 1-10 the difficulty is 70.
Oh, and don't forget setting up permissions...
    Difficulty level:
    Solaris = 70/10
    Linux = 10/10
    Windows = 1/10
Now if you have a couple of weeks to dedicate then go for it. But I wouldn't go in expecting to "learn it on the weekend". Not even a 10 hours a day spent learning it weekend. Learn solaris first, THEN buy the hardware and build a server (if you get to that point).

  • Office for Mac: windows media player and Napster?

I have recently bought an iMac g5 and have had Microsoft Office for Macintosh installed. Last night I was having my first general rummage and discovered that I appear to have a Windows Media installer included in the software for Office. I have a Napster account and had previously assumed that I would not be able to access it from my iMac.
Could anyone advise me whether it would be sensible for me to try to install Windows Media from this Office for Mac package, and whether it would cause any issues with iTunes or otherwise?
If anyone has any experience using Napster on an Apple (hope the coincedence of those words in the same sentence is not too sacreligious), please shout, whether good or bad.
    Thanks in advance
    James

    Hi,
There is indeed a version of Windows Media Player for Macs. However, it is version 9 whereas there is a later version for PC's that is much more full featured. In addition Microsoft have recently officially discontinued Windows Media Player for Mac after not updating it for years. This means that it does not work with Napster unfortunately. However you can use Windows Media Player for Mac to play back Windows Media Files without copy protection (DRM) such as windows media files from the internet. To do this you can install Windows Media Player for Mac. Alternatively Microsoft suggests that you use the Flip4Mac windows media player plugin (www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm) which allows you to play back Windows Media files using Quicktime Player.
I find this to be a superior solution (It is also free) as the experience is more seamless and it supports more formats. Therefore I suggest you download and install this and do not install windows media player.

  • External drive for Mac & WIndows?

I hope this is the correct forum for this question.
I need to format an external hard drive on a Mac, so that it can be read on a Windows PC. The drive will contain QT movie files, specifically media from FCP, which need to be referred to on a PC outside of FCP. Is it possible to format a drive this way? I looked at Disk Utility, where it seems I can choose the FAT32 format, but I understand this has a file size limit of 4GB, which may be a significant limitation with video files. If I can format a drive to to be read on a PC, will I still be able to read that drive on a Mac?
I have successfully accessed on my Mac, without a problem, media files which were written onto a PC formatted external drive. Can I do the same in reverse?
    John

Mac OS X can read NTFS drives, but not write to them without third-party software.
Windows can't do anything with a Mac formatted drive without additional software.
These don't apply to drives shared over a network; in this case, treat all computers as if they had the filesystem capabilities of the computer the drive is directly connected to. If plugged into an AirPort base station's USB port, the drive can be either Mac OS Extended or FAT32.

  • Microphone for Mac

I was given a fairly good quality microphone which I'd like to use for recording slide audio in Captivate 7. However, I am using a Mac. The microphone has two jacks -- one pink and one green. The Mac has only one sound connection. If anyone has encountered this and has a suggestion, I'd appreciate it.

    Hi Jay
I'm pretty much a Mac ignoramous, but I've seen connections like this on PCs. If I'm understanding correctly, it's a single jack that allows connection of Headphones AND Microphone. I think you may need a splitter.

  • Microphone for Macs

I gotta say I love Garageband/Logic, but I am missing a professional microphone. At the moment, my band (literally a garage band, which consists of 5 members) record with our MacBook microphone, which doesn't really turn out nice-sounding all the time.
What is a Mac-compatible (I just learned you need an amp for normal mics) microphone that produces reasonably clean/more pro-sounding voice for a high-school student budget (16-years-old to be exact).
    Thanks!

    Hi,
speaking of a budget, i would recommend you spend your money for 2 devices:
1st: A simple audio interface (about 100$) with the option to plug in both a guitar (or other instruments) and a mic. Spend a little more to get a good interface with many options or MIDI connectors, say 150$ or so.
2nd: A basic dynamic microphone you can use all of your life: The sturdy and famous Shure SM-57 (or 58 for vocals), which ist around 100$. By spending these 200-300$, you'll get your first basic equipment that will improve your sound and your options significantly.
If you can't afford this (and i assure you should), I'd recommend a simple USB microphone to start with, but be shure to test it first (maybe at a decent musicians store), because milage may vary. Don't shoot for the cheapest, though. You'll regret it later.

  • MB Pro & External Hard Drive - Best format for Mac/Windows use?

My external hard drive is currently formatted as FAT 32. I need to use it between Mac and Windows. However, I have many files that are 4 GB or larger.
Should I reformat as HFS? Will that at least be readable on Windows?
I thank you in advance for any thoughts.

    There's no really good choice.
Regardless of the filesystem you choose, you will need additional software to read/write it on one of the operating systems. MacDrive for Windows will permit you to read/write HFS+ formatted volumes on Windows -- it's $50. MacFuse + NTFSng allows Mac OS X to read/write NTFS formatted drives -- it's free, but a little awkward.
