Microphone problems after latest kernel update

I just updated to the latest kernel version this morning, and have immediately found some problems.  When I try to do voice chat on Skype, it does not pick up the microphone input at all.  Testing further, I found that the microphone input works just fine elsewhere.

try enabling the 'capture' volume control in your volume preferences.  i noticed yesterday when trying to use skype that the microphone volume control no longer worked as it used to.  but using the capture volume control has things back as they should be.
note i'm using gnome as my desktop interface.

  • VMware wont start after latest kernel update!

Okay when i went to reboot it went to boot into arch but wile it was loading the vmware modules it would stay stuck at loading vm communication interface socket family and would just stay there the only way i could even boot into arch was to edit my grub so i could login and at least comment out vmware i tried to reapply the vmware patch fix that was on the wiki and had no luck also tried reinstalling + reapplying patch after words and still no luck I'm hoping this is happening to someone else as well and not just me (mean i know lol) I also tried virtualbox but seems it has it's own mess of problems as well after latest kernel update.

I have tried rebuilding the the kernel image and even tried reinstalling grub with no luck.  After not having a usable system for several days I ended up just having to reinstall and maybe found out more about the problem.  Using the net install image and a 64 bit install this time making a EXT2 boot and a root partition of JFS right after install I get a panic during boot about how the system can't find a valid filesystem on what would be root partition.  Even when passing the "rootfstype=jfs" to the kernel line in grub it still errors out telling me that it is "Bailing out, your on your own.  Good luck!" (pretty funny error messages if you are not ripping your hair out).  After that I redid the install this time making a EXT4 root partition and everything is working.
It seems to me that this all points to a problem with JFS on 64 bit systems, my other systems are all 32 bit and usign JFS root just fine... can anyone else confirm this?

  • After latest kernel update Grub freaks out

Out of three machine that I have Arch running on, all have grabbed the latest kernel update, only only of them is unable to boot.  Grub does not like something that it is finding here is the error that I get:
    Booting 'Arch Linux'
    root (hd0,5)
Filesystem type is jfs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c248a2d9-7fd9-48a4-ad-49-551246f36bee resume=/dev/sda5 ro vga=773
Error 2: Bad file or directory type
    Press any key to continue...
I already loaded I live cd to make sure that the uuid of the partition did not change and it has not, also the vmlinuz26 and kernel image are in the /boot directory.  Is this a one off problem or are other people seeing this issue, wanting to make sure this is not some kind of bug that need reported.  I am going to try just using /dev/sda6 instead of the UUID just to make sure that is not the problem (one of the working machines is setup using this method, the other is going through /dev/mapper because it uses LVM)

  • Problems After Latest Security Update From March 10, 2015

Is anyone having problems after the latest security update from March 10th?
First my screen went from 16:9 to 4:3 and the resolution turned into a blocky 800 x 600. I managed to find a program
online to correct this problem called SwitchResX. It's unfortunately a pay program for 14 Euro. Here's the link
in case anyone needs it http://www.madrau.com/index.html
Now some alias icons in my dock have disappeared, but are kinda visible when I run my mouse over them, their
names pop up, but have no icons in the dock.
Sometime booting up is clumsy with a lot of hang time and I have to restart my Mac Mini manually by pressing
the button in the back to get a clean bootup to my desktop screen.
Could Apple do a fix real soon for this Security Update blunder?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I too experienced problems with the keyboard and mouse on this G5, starting about a week ago when I installed the Java Release 6 and QuickTime 7.3.1 updates. The two symptoms I noticed most were slow, jerky scrolling through topic lists in MT-NewsWatcher (using the arrow keys) and difficulty with selecting text with the mouse in Safari (the selection being anchored several characters away from where I’d begin a click-&-drag).
The latest patch, Security Update 2007-009 (PowerPC) v1.1, seems to have solved the problems for me.

  • Anyone experiencing screen resolution problems after latest Mavericks Update?

Anyone got a blurred monitor after the latest Mavericks Update?
I am running  Mavericks 10.9.2 on a Mini Mac with a Logic TV/Monitor. Since the latest Mavericks update I no longer have the option in settings to scale to 1600 x900. Since this gives the best picture on my monitor I now have either a blurred screen with large text or a blurred screen with very tiny text. No other options that give a 'normal' display seem available now, after allowing the 'Update'. The update claims to be addressing faults on the MacBook display, which it may well do, but it has also apparently screwed up Mac Mini screen resolution Options for some of us.
I have reverted back to 10.9.2 and turned off automatic updates, but I can't stay that way indefinitely.
I've tried to find an e-mail address or phone number to log my complaint to Apple but to no avail. (I guess they would otherwise be inundated with customer complaints so keep that kind of information under wrapps). Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not having any problems with dual DVI connected Samsung 21.5" monitors in 10.9.3
What connection (adapter, cable, etc.) are you using..?
To send Apple Feedback, go to > Apple - Mac OS X - Feedback
If your looking for better resolution options, try > Mac App Store - Display Menu

  • Problems after latest Security Update

I installed the latest Security Update (009) and the Java update (Rel 6). Now my mouse has become very erratic and I cannot go directly to my mail on my host site like I did before the update. I have an iBook without the update on it and it works fine. The difference is that the updated machine has 523.12.2 on it and the iBook has 523.12 on it and I haven't updated Java either. Is there any to back off these updates? Help!!!

  • Apple TV audio problems after latest software update

Updated my AppleTV last night with latest software update. Completly lost sound through my home theater system. Only hear audio on the TV. Anyone else having this problem? Apple TV is sure buggy...about ready to chuck it out the window!

  • OS X Yosemite problem after latest software update

    Hi there,
I have MacBook Pro 13" Core i3 of December 2013. Everything was working fine until I got the latest update I don't remember which update that was exactly, and since then my whole computer is hanged, nothing is working decently and Microsoft products are also not working. Now it is not even booting up. I have Microsoft Windows s well, it is running efficiently on the same machine without any problem. Please update me if you have the same problem, or have got any solution to that. Thanks in advance. Khan

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Major problems after latest security update

I did a security update a few daus ago updating my G5.
When started it acts normal when <I log in (using file wault) but when the desktop appears it takes forever. Ati first the harddrives appear on the desktop (after maybe 30 minutes). Then the top menu after a lot longer and then finally documents I have on the desktop. When i diagnose with diskwarrior it crashes. I can open the folders on the hard drive but not the program folder, when trying to open that the computer just starts thinking. Programs and internet connection works but as soon as I try to do anything related to the system the spinning rainbow spinning thing starts and never stops.
I am desoerate for a sollution, any hints on what I can do?

    Hi Jason,
tried safe mode yesterday (before reading this post) and the computer acts the same, I also did another security update last night since I saw that one more recent than the one I did previously, so I updated java and security and now the problem is worse.
The computer starts up with the gray screen with the apple and when it is supposed to move on it shuts down again
It is correct that I use file vault, the reason for this is that we had some problems with burglars at my previous job and I have some sensitive data on the computer. I just moved the computer to my home a few weeks ago so if I will only get it started I will disable it. The problem is with moving I can't find my system DVD so I can't start from it.
Is it possible to burn a disk with operating system from my Powerbook 17" G4 or is that not an option? If possible what should I burn to be able to boot?

  • Boot up problems after latest Security Update

I just arrived home after a three day vacation, and I booted up my Power Mac G4 running Tiger 10.4.11. Software Update immediately notified me of a Security Update, which I okayed. After restart, my screen showed the grey Apple logo for a bit, then went right to a grey circle with a slash through it. I restarted the machine with my Tiger Install disk and ran Disk Utility, and then ran through the Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk utilities, with no abnormalities noted. It'll boot into OS 9 just fine, but when I restart while hold down the Option key for Startup Disk select, then select the Mac OS X disk (I have two hard drives on my machine), it shows me the Circle/Slash icon again as before. What gives? everything was working fine until this blasted Security Update (I believe it was the 2008-004 update).
I just recently upgraded my Mac OS X volume with a 500GB hard drive and a controller card, as my previous drive failed. Did something get messed up with that setup after this update?

I don't know whether other users would make any difference, as I don't even get to the User Select screen yet- would changing my password really have any effect?
Safe Boot will bring up the Login window if it gets that far.
Not sure if the PW change would help, best to wait on that 'till after all else fails.
PS. I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Mail Connection Problems after latest Maverick Update

My macbook pro contains the latest OS Maverick update (12/17/2013) and I am still having mail connection problems.
Several times an hour the mail app is dropping the mail connection on all my accounts. I have to sign in to all my connections each time the connection drops. Does anyone think of a solution to this problem? Anyone else still having this problem with Maverick Mail connections?
    Thanks

Same problem here. For a couple of weeks, I've had an error message that my accounts can't log in. I've gone thru the account prefs and made sure all settings are correct and set to Apple's suggested settings. Also getting double messages sometimes. Not all messages, but one or two will be doubled. This happens on my iPhone and Mac's. If I scroll the window the double message disappears.
Also had lots of errors that mail can;t be deleted. I go back and delete the message again and it goes away.
I kinda feel like this is Mavericks related since these issues were not happening under ML.

  • Bluetooth problems after latest OS update

On January 18, 2014 the latest Android OS update was pushed to my phone. Since that time I have had problems with the Bluetooth connection to my car stereo through Sync. The phone will connect, but I must manually go into the Bluetooth settings - select the Sync connection settings and enable Use for phone audio and Use for media audio EVERY TIME I get back in my car. These settings were automatically enabled prior to the OS update.
Is there a way to make these settings enabled automatically when this Bluetooth connection is made?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Cat

        catnfran,
I'm sorry to hear that you have been experiencing this issue with your Bluetooth feature! Updates are meant to offer enhancements.
Based on our findings, with the new update, making this change manually would be the recommend option. If needed, we can attempt to master reset the device http://vz.to/1d1KPN1 to see if this helps resolve this particular concern.

  • Time Magazine app problems after latest OS update

Since updating OS my Time magazine app won't download any new issues. Looking at the pre central forums I know this is a problem for other people too. When I click to download it just says 'initiating' and then 'paused'. I've tried this several times, restarted my touchpad and the app, nothing works.
Is anyone working on a way to sort this out? Does anyone know a workaround?
    Thanks for your help.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

  • App problems after latest iOS update

Since most recent update, can't open app store, music or ibooks unless I'm tethered to my computer. I have rebooted several times. My partner is having same issue with a different model of iPad. When will Apple release a fix!?!?!

The passcode settings simply give you the option of having the passcode lock immediately you lock the screen, or after a delay period.  If you set a delay the passcode lock will not activate for the period of the delay.  I have mine set to one minute.  It is a "convenience" measure to save me having to re-enter the passcode if I lock the screen then immediately remember that there was something else I wanted to do.  Obviously this entails a small compromise on security and if you are at all concerned then you should set the passcode to "Immediately".  It really has nothing to do with the camera short-cut (though loads of users seem to have run away with this notion).  It would be the same if you just did "slide to unlock" during the delay period.

  • Permissions problems after latest software update

I verified my disk, repaired permissions, installed the latest SU (iTunes and FrontRow) individually, repairing permissions between installations and I still show permission errors. An example:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
I get dozens of these, regardless of how many times I run DU/Repair Permissions. Does it have something to do with the "l" as in "they are lrw-r--r--"? Any "fix" for this or is this something to be concerned about?
Thank you for your consideration and input.
    Sincerely,
    NoKaOi

I don't agree that the permissions repair system is in a "state of disarray," that it isn't useful for repairing permissions, or that it somehow represents an exploitable security issue. The only thing "wrong" with it is it generates messages that not all users understand. If this is an indicator of a system in disarray, then so is everything from crash reports to most system logs.
biovizier's argument is spurious. There are no "false positive" messages because a warning is not a positive indicator of anything. Apple's built-in dictionary says it is "a statement or event that indicates a possible or impending danger, problem, or other unpleasant situation" & its use throughout the OS is consistent with that meaning.
The permissions repair in Disk Utility is intended for a specific purpose: to correct problems caused by mis-set permissions of files installed by the Mac OS X installer. This is printed right in the First Aid window! If that isn't enough of a hint, open Disk Utility's help, where you will read that +If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking “Repair Disk Permissions.”+
*It still does that* -- in fact, if it acted on what it instead only warns about, it would not in some circumstances correct problems but cause them. This conservative approach is characteristic of all the underlying utilities bundled with the OS that Disk Utility makes accessible to users through a GUI, including the disk repair, which stops short of attempting repairs that might lose data.
All the "voodoo" comes from users that have decided it has other, vaguely understood powers to correct or detect things it was never designed to do. The complaints about this are just about as reasonable as complaining that a screwdriver makes a lousy hammer. That is true but irrelevant: problems (real or imagined) caused by the misuse of a tool are not the responsibility of the toolmaker, arguably even if the toolmaker does not provide instructions for its proper use. Here they are provided so there are no legitimate grounds for complaint, other than possibly with those who recommend using it for some other reason than to do what it was intended to do.
It's really pretty simple: if there is an indication that the permissions of files installed by Apple's installer are causing problems, then run the repair. If it solves them, hooray for that. If it does not, then the problem is elsewhere & there is nothing to be gained by running it again or puzzling over messages that you don't understand.
